Vocal Coach REACTION & ANALYSIS 🎧 Dimash 🎙️ Unforgettable Day (LIVE) 🎶

2024 ж. 21 Мам.
19 943 Рет қаралды

Dr Dan provides a vocal analysis of Dimash's live performance, describing the subtle vocal flourishes that may go unnoticed yet contribute significantly to the auditory experience. He discusses the industry practice of adding a backing track to enrich the vocal sound, which he suspects is present during Dimash's performance.
⚠ During the edit of this video, I noticed that the picture-in-picture is glitchy. I hope this does not detract from the viewing experience too much.
Dr Dan admires Dimash's comfort and showmanship on stage, particularly in front of a large audience, noting the contrast between Dimash's light upper register and his strong, focused tone. He expresses a preference for Dimash's consistent tonality over vocal acrobatics, reflecting on his personal taste and the cultural aspects influencing it. Dr Dan concludes by inviting viewers to share their top Dimash performances, emphasising his own appreciation for the singer's talent without declaring him the absolute best.

⚠️ As a singing voice specialist, I fully acknowledge that each live performance is a snapshot in time and does not encapsulate the entire spectrum of an artist's work, nor can it predict their future evolution. I understand that a myriad of factors, both positive and negative, can influence the delivery of a live performance. I strive to appreciate and critique each live rendition for its own merits, independent of the artist's past or potential future performances. Recognising the ebb and flow of live music, I value its spontaneity, novelty, and individuality and strive to give it the thoughtful consideration it deserves.

  • One very experienced professional vocal teacher said, "In all my years of listening to singers, Dimash is the only singer that has everything." A professional opera singer said she didn't know anyone who could sing in baritone, tenor, contralto and soprano (highest note in his head voice G6). Both technically and artistically I believe Dimash is in a class of his own. His musical diversity is also unmatched, with everything from opera to rap.

  • Won't the audience hear him "testing" his voice? I heard some say he shakes the mike to prove it is live. Dimash said himself, this wasn't planned. He missed a note, so, in Dimash style he went for the next one.

    @HappybdD_mash5-24@HappybdD_mash5-243 ай бұрын
    • The shaking mic thing is also something he explained himself as indeed being proof of live. It started after social media spreading of his songs. People in Asia knew his background and knew he's basically a GOAT of singing. Then Westerners got video links with no context and too lazy to look anything up and started running their mouths. That's when Dimash started shaking the mic. He has indeed also said it was unplanned. It would appear actually, as that fits, that when he shook the mic but nothing came out he was going for a D7. It was the logical note at that time. It didn't happen, and then Dimash thought well then double or nothing. And because of that this song is now remembered not as the time Dimash's voice failed, but as the time Dimash beat all of the great whistlers.

  • Dr. Dan, thank you for your good analysis.🤗 Please don't be afraid of dears’s comments, we're very friendly.😊 It happens that we've seen/heard almost all of Dimash's minimal performances in his almost 10 year career. (Not to mention, many of us have had the pleasure of hearing him live in concert) And yes, although Dimash is one of the best vocalists in the world, sometimes Dimash does lip-sync, just like any other singer does.😌 That's why we know perfectly well when he has done it and when he hasn't. And, when necessary, we defend Dimash fiercely. At this point, everyone knows Dimash is not only a great singer, he's one of the few artists who care about offering quality music in our time. (I highly recommend turning on the subtitles so you can read the lyrics, which are often very poetic and meaningful). Just for that reason alone, he deserves our most sincere thanks and appreciation.❤

  • If we saw singing as a competition, we could compare it to something like Decathlon. You have many different genres and techniques and you could compare him with others in all of those different skills. A single competitor might win in one competition but none of the others. But Dimash would be at the top in each and every one and accumulate points. (Maybe not in the rap genre - but even there he would score a little…) 😉 And I have no doubt he would win the whole thing with a great distance between him and no 2. 😜 You should just watch many more of his songs. He does not use his vocal acrobatics all the time - even if he always sounds spectacular when he stays in "only" 1-3 Octaves. And when he does go crazy with his voice it always serves the song. You might want to enable subtitles. The messages of his songs are often very important and emotional. ❤ About the lip-synching argument: When you watch fancams of his performances you realize, that he sings more often live, than people think when hearing the cleaned up official video - some producers just don’t want cheers from the crowd and switch out the audio - sometimes with other live audio. Usually the fancams show that he sounds even better live than on the cleaned up version.

  • My favourite live performance of Dimash is the duet he recently did with Placido Domingo from the Pearl Fishers. Despite the fact that he only had one day to prepare with one rehearsal and suffering from a cold/ cough. They are both judges on the Virtuoso 4+ in Budapest. The other one is Olimpico from his Arnau concert. The third is Omir also recent with his brot her Mansur accompanying him on the guitar. Dimash was on the keyboard. He composed the song himself as a tribute to his Dears. For me Dimash is the big deal. He has great model looks, charisma, lots of talent, elegance and professionalism. He is also an academic. Currently finishing off his Doctorate degree. A multi instrumentalist on top of all that. Thank you for the review. All the best from Germany 🇩🇪 ❤

    • You might be disappointed at his analysis of the Almaty performance of "The Story of One Sky" because significantly large parts of it were the same pre-recordings that were used in the music video. He would surely realize that if he has ever seen the MV and very likely will detect it even if he has not. That being said, all of the other songs in that concert (with the exception of "Ave Maria" and the first three fourths of "El Amor En Ti,") were purely live and would be good choices for him to analyze.

  • If we check other versions that Dimash sings of this song (which he wrote when he was younger), we can see a melisma or other very beautiful variations in this part of the "whistle". Here, singing on an open stage and with some discomfort in the return (we can see it several times by adjusting the headphones) we realize, in this specific part of the song, that he is going to do something and, not being able to do what he would like (Perhaps the interference of the audience or the inaccurate response of the sound, a fact that impaired his concentration), he then issued this wonderful and historic C#8 modulated to D8, with vibrato! In a more technical analysis, we can see that the notes sound dissonant, as they do not belong to the harmonic field of the tonality of the music. Still, it's a demo of technique! He must have instantly thought, "Since I couldn't do what I wanted, I'll improvise!" So he emitted the inconceivable, supernatural D8 (4698.64 Hz)! Of course, this is a joke to me, but it makes one wonder: What is Dimash's limit?

  • I think a couple of his recent live performances are especially impressive. His duet with Placido Domingo is, of course, one of them, any of the 29 live (out of 31 songs he performed) in his Almaty concert in September of 2022, and his recent performance of "Omir" alongside his brother Mansur.

    @dougfriendly7676@dougfriendly76763 ай бұрын
  • I couldn't pick his three songs even if I wanted to. I've been listening to his acoustic rendition of Omir for the past few days as much as I could spare the time to do it and the whole time I was thinking oh my god this is so beautiful so beautiful and then KZhead just threw in my face a song he sang at an early age, perhaps when he was seventeen or eighteen, there is no indication of the year, but you can make that assumption knowing his earlier performances. I was so stunned and couldn't even believe I had never heard of this gem, Kiм бiлгeн! So how could I choose something from his vast treasury of songs when I am amazed by this genius singer every day! Thank you for your professional thoughts on Dimash's artistic and vocal performance of his youthful masterpiece of a composition💖🎶🤗

The Songs from Dimash suggested the most are the ones with as you call it "vocal acrobatics" and they are often from TV Shows other events where he can not sing live. Yes, Dears are very protective of Dimash, more so because of the quality of the human being that he is. 😊 I would be curious to hear your thoughts on how Dimash prepared his voice before the whistle note in his duet with Li Yugang (Drunken Concubine/Diva Dance). This is a situation that few people can control: turn an error into a triumph. Dimash has a lot of live performances, take at least the entire Chinese competition of 2017, which brought him worldwide fame. Спасибо за Вашу реакцию на это особенное выступление Мастера. Как сам Димаш признался в интервью, свисток не был запланирован. Это ситуация, подвластная немногим: превратить погрешность в триумф. So Dimash had just become internationally famous via China, and was back in Kazakhstan for this event, outdoors where he was not the only artist.I only know this from picking up bits and pieces over the years. I don't know which city it was in. He was in China mostly for about three and a half years after his immediate success in China and built up a huge following there and also mixing in visits for concerts in Russia. He has many impressive songs, and not all of them touch you in the same way, sometimes some of them touch you more than others depending on your mood. With a little effort, maybe I could put Olympico, from her concert Kinetic voice, Know in New Wave, Jasmin Flower a duo with Wu Tong, but my favorites are War and Peace, Olympico, Thousands of miles a common dream version January 2020, Daididau from the concert of Bastau, Samaltau, Passione, Give me love, SOS, My swan.

    • I can’t choose top three. But if you don’t like “acrobatics” and want live, maybe you can try his last live video with his younger brother - Omir (and please turn on the caption) and O’key is not live - just video. I don’t really divide songs on acrobatic/non acrobatic, since he is just using what he has in his toolbox 🤷‍♀️ and he has fun exploring. I’m not sure he really planed this whistle. He used (lower) whistle notes before and after this, and there was times when he used a staccato a lot … and as times pass he explore and learn other sounds and uses them. If I have to choose three songs - today I’ll choose Omir, Know and MV(!) The Story of One Sky (here if you don’t choose MV, you’ll think it is really all about acrobatics, but it is not. Not at all).

  • he measures,works on every note,shade,tonality and range,and i would like to explain why people alledge him as the best singer in the world,it is because ,being a conventional singer many can do,range,but dimash is another level,he sings on every genre,,he has enough Octeves and semi tones,he does not follow the music industry,evry big artist today is lining up to do a duet with him,the last one with Placido domingo at Domingos request,recently the worlds greatest pianist Lang Lang,He did world reknown cellist,etc,etc,and to add to that best in the world his personality ,his respect for everyone incluiding all artist,a very humble person etc etc,you know miss Universe they also cjeck out your personality,and caracter,that is what makes someone a legend ,not views,not likes and the knowdge and the unknown of musicaqlity,i am 71 yrs old,i follow him for over 7yrs,and study him,i have seen every video,i am sure ther are one or two still missing,but he is pure on everything he does,his angelic voice,,allways on pitch,mi could carry on,but that is a little why ,he is considered,and least but not last every video he presents something that is new,captivating,drawsyou in,you just shut up and listen very few can do that,and most because this young man is a man with the utmost upper level of musicality,i played all my life,and never heard anyone from mercury to M,JACKson,to anyone,he does opera,he raps,rocks all to a TTT,now someone and all that know music should give credit where credit is due,i do not envy the young man,i give him credit ,WHY,the boy works like no one,his shows are minimum3/5 hours long,Almaty went o 4 hours,and at the end he still roars.he swims 10/20 laps underwater to have his bottles of oxygen,all that is to be considered.Do you know how a racing driver is considered the worlds champion,once you learn the termnolagy,it is no diferent in music,factual1

  • Thank you Dr Dan! Well, Dimash himself has repeatedly answered interview questions about his vocal range with the same statement, namely that it isn’t important. What is important is whether he has been able to convey the feelings and emotions of the song to his audience. In this particular performance, yes, something went wrong technically, and whatever sound he was making plus the shaking of the microphone, didn’t get into the electronic recording, so he compensated by throwing out that legendary D8. So we know he can do that. But then again, why did he never repeat that feat again? I think he answered it himself. The song needs to sound beautiful to the ear, while the D8 is so high that it rather screeches. Was it accidental? Yes. One Dear actually asked him that question at the online meet-and-greet after his Digital Concert in 2021, and he confirmed it was. Top three performances? That is one tough question… Maybe #1 is his performance at the E-Mei Music Festival when his numbers were at the end. A storm had burst out, yet his Dears refused to leave, although many of them had not worn raincoats or brought umbrellas. Dimash was so touched that he kept to the front of the stage where he too became completely drenched, and though a staff member brought him an umbrella, he found it awkward and put it down saying, if my Dears can stand in the rain to hear me, I can stand in the rain to sing for them . Anyway, I remember reading posts on Weibo that night, and fans posting, still in tears. #2: Dimash’s SOS in London. He had up on the back of the stage images of his friend Denys Ten, an up and coming ice skater from Kazakhstan who had recently been killed by a mugger. He turned to face Denys, but hit so emotional that he choked on his words, and had to stop several times. When the song ended, he walked backstage to recover. #3: There’s an early, maybe 2015 or 2016, clip of Dimash on a show on Kazakh tv, where the hosts, two comedians, changed the lyrics of Opera 2, from Russian to Kazakh, and from serious to farcical. Dimash was given the lyrics on the spot and asked to sing them live. He choked so badly laughing that he also broke down at one point. But of course recovered . This song has a section that launches into soprano aaaaaaaah… So the lyrics poked fun at that.

  • I think his most impressive creation is the story of one sky. This selfcomposed masterpierce whom he worked on for 3 years is a plea for peace and unity in this so divided world. He sang a life version in his Almaty concert. This is real mastery not only vocaly, also the composition of this attests that he is a real musical genius. Everyone should see the minifilm accompagning the song where he also plays the main caracter and had a hand in the realisation. Thank you for your sincere comment! ❤

  • I agree with you Dr Dan. It's emotional connection that is central to the vocal artist's ability for me. After about 50 years of listening to music with logical analysis being supreme I eventually realized how the music made you feel is really is the most important, in my opinion. This is also my favorite Dimash video and his acoustic acrobatics ability is undeniable.

  • It's not just his range. It is the quality of his voice at all register levels. His breath control is totally stunning. His ability and willingness to sing and mix various styles like classical, theater, pop, rap, metal scream, eastern culture tones. With songs often including more than one of these styles. Would suggest The story of one sky, but you should watch the video version first, to understand how the music relates to the video. Then go watch the live version. Whether he is the best is open to interpretation, but certainly I don't know of anyone else performing his style of music.

  • I believe the new studio recording/video of "Omir" is one you would truly enjoy hearing. The original mv of this original by Dimash (music and lyrics and maybe more, someone else may know) was given to us a year ago in May. This new version in studio is performed by Dimash on piano and singing, of course, along with his younger brother, under 20 years old, playing acoustic guitar. ❤️ It is done live. Thank you so very much for asking and for giving us your thoughts about this thrilling performance of Unforgettable Day.🫶

  • Dimash's Dears are the best tbh. We identify with him and his mission in life with such a depth that we can't help but try to get him to the whole world. He is more than just a singer, or an actor, or a music composer... he doesn't fit in one category.... I would maybe dare to say he is a humanist... compassionate, humble, gifted, loving, pure...ahh.. he is a gift to humanity to be honest. His voice, his person, his music does something to our brains... even if one doesn't understand the lyrics. As a person in the Autism Spectrum (Neurodivergent) I have a special reaction to his voice. It's extremely healing to our brains. I suggest anyone with a loved one who has Autism or is in the Spectrum.... do play Dimash for them. Specially the songs that are especially composed for him. You will see the reaction! Animals, babies.. even they have reactions to this gifted being.

  • Hi! Thank you for your interesting analysis. It is easy to say that you prefer Dimash's mid-range singing voice way more than the extreme ranges (and I, to some extent, even agree with you), but you should also acknowledge that, as an average Australian, it is very unlikely that you would have given much attention or credence to a good, but unremarkable singer from a country in Central Asia. You know of Dimash because of his ability and to show that ability and garner the attention that he has, it was and is necessary to have songs that demonstrate it. A catch-22 situation to some extent... when reactors who know you because of your amazing and out of the ordinary abilities, then say that they prefer it if you stick to your mid-range. 🤔

  • There is nothing wrong with his earpiece, Dimash takes it out when he's about to go ballistic with his vocals, he needs to hear what it is sounding like to the audience. As a vocal coach, I would think you would know this. Have you ever used one on stage live? On top of that, Dimash's ear pieces are custom made for him. Look close to se the DQ on them. Also, the waving back in forth is not only for the sound effect, but it's proving that he is singing this LIVE, not lip-syncing to a pre- recording. As some have suggested. In an interview, Dimash said that he was trying for something and it didn't work (no sound came out) so he thought quick and threw the D8 out there instead

  • 👉 Dimash composed “Unforgettable Day” as he was 19 ys. He sings in his mother tongue Kazakh. Oral Baissengir (father of a friend of Dimash) wrote the lyrics. He also wrote the lyrics to 'Aqquym / My Swan'- Official MV - kzhead.info/sun/n69tZrCuaKaekoE/bejne.html (subt.) and co-wrote the lyrics to 'Qairan Elim'- Official MV - kzhead.info/sun/fphuociKeHuNlIU/bejne.html A Dear opined that Dimash initially sings an ultrasound 🤣 I think, then he remembers that we humans can’t hear it and gifted us a D8 (out of piano) and he held it for “endless” long 5 seconds. This is a world record. Nobody has ever sung this high note in a live performance (captured on video for eternity). The shaking of the microphone is not only a cool effect, but also shows that he is singing live (is often doubted). This event was the 3rd Open Air Music Festival organized by Gakku TV on September 16, 2017 in Almaty, Kazakhstan - (2015 - 40,000 spectators, 2016 (1000 years of Almaty) - 90,000 spectators. 2017 - Dimash was announced and 150,000 came.
