00:00 Hello Everyone!
01:50 Game Starts!
Havana (1965)
The 4th Capablanca Memorial International Chess Tournament was held in the capital city of Havana in Cuba. Eighteen grandmasters and six masters participated in the round-robin event at the Habana Libre hotel from August 25 to September 26, 1965. It was one of the best-funded tournaments at the time, due to Ché Guevara's patronage. As the director of the Cuban National Bank and Minister of Industry, he guaranteed a $3000 first prize with more than $4500 to be dispersed among the next five finishers. This edition of the memorial gained worldwide significance because it was the first international tournament in which Bobby Fischer would be participating since the Curacao Candidates (1962), more than three years before. He had agreed to attend for a $3000 appearance fee, but difficulties arose when the US State Department refused him a visa to travel to Cuba. When Fischer suggested playing by telex from the Marshall Chess Club, the organizers agreed although it would end up costing them over $10,000. Although Fischer had been playing regularly in US championships in the intervening three years (and winning them all), this tournament would mark the first time Fischer would be facing a number of the strongest Soviet grandmasters since his accusations against them for conspiring to keep him from winning the Candidates Tournament to challenge Botvinnik in 1963. Fischer's main Soviet rivals at this event were former world champion Vasily Smyslov, Efim Geller and Ratmir Kholmov.
Borislav Ivkov led for most of the tournament, but suffered a tragic collapse at the end. In the penultimate round, with a won game against the tailender Garcia, he blundered and had to resign. In the last round, with White against Robatsch, he played for a win, but lost again. This enabled Smyslov to finish first by one-half point, despite losing to Fischer in their individual game. Fischer shared second place with Geller and Ivkov. Kholmov joined the top finishers in fifth place.

  • For your knowledge. The reason that we don't Play Bxb6 in the oppening is not because the engine says don't do it, it's because you can't give up your strongest minor piece, if you give it up, you no longer control the darksquares, and as white has already advanced f4-f5 the King becomes more fulnerable. You don't need an engine to understand this

    • I dont think anything was wrong with Bxb6 I mean what else are you gonna play that isnt much worse? And the early f4-f5 ideas itself doesnt seem to work to well anymore. I am by no means an expert at all but personally I think the entire Bc4 system is a bit lackluster for white if black knows their theory. I think the Bg5 is a lot more scary but that goes for both sides:) or even the g3 system can actually be dangerous if black does not know top modern theory.

  • That ...Qe3 move is so powerful and infiltrating, and is why Black won, but yet I could NEVER pull off a move like that in a real game. I'm still not sure why White didn't kick the Black queen away with his rook. Perhaps he thought moving his Knight was more clever, as Fischer would'nt expect that. Either way, if you allow the opponent to anchor their Queen in your ranks that early then your defeat is assured.

It's not catastrophic to take the pawn, but black goes from slightly better to slightly worse because the sequence that follows leads to white getting a little initiative: Nxe4 Nxe4 Bxe4 Ng3 Bb7 Nh5 was what looked most natural to me and white is threatening f6, Qg4 is an idea etc. Still pretty even in the engine evaluation, but black is on the back foot.

    • This is explained in the excellent book, My 60 Memorable Games by Fischer. Bobby was not allowed to travel to Havana, so they arranged for him to play in the tournament via a “radio” format from New York. Bobby was put in a room, and the opponent’s moves were sent by radio from Havana to an arbiter in New York. The arbiter would then visit Bobby in the room, convey the move, and await Bobby’s reply.

    • after captures, captures Ng3 black has to do something about his hanging bishop. It doesn't matter much if you support it with d5 or retreat to b7. In either case, white plays f6 and gets a very nice attack. Given that Black already has a wonderful position its probably not worth ruining it for a pawn you really don't need.

  • 2nd : Timestamps - 1st #suggestion Or why not let viewers make timestamps in comments then you can pin the best timestamp comment and copy the timestamps to the video description? 2nd #suggestion - Alice Lee beat Wesley So... ...'s girlfriend Carissa Yip in 2023 USCC girls juniors Carissa is underperforming and even lost to a WGM because Carissa is distracted by a secret relationship with Wesley So that started in the 2022 Olympiad. Look at Carissa's X header. Notice both of them are defending champions but then underperform in their 1st tournaments after the Olympiad. Carissa Yip 2021 USCC women's - winner 2022 USCC girls juniors - didn't play but would've easily won if not for playing in 2022 USCC juniors instead 2023 USCC girls juniors - underperforming Wesley So 2019 classical WFRCC - winner 2021 9LX - 2nd place 2021 USCC - winner 2022 9LX - only 5th place 2022 USCC - only 5th place 2022 rapid WFRCC - only 6th place 3rd #suggestion - magnus cheats anish in round 7 superbet blitz 2023 --> 3:22:36 in 8gw7XDq87C4 4th #suggestion - Philippine women's chess 2022 WGM Janelle Frayna, the 1st and only Philippine WGM, upset Georgian GM (really GM not just WGM) Bela Khotenashvili at the 2022 world blitz.
