On Christmas Day, 2021, the world’s most powerful space telescope was launched. A joint effort between the North American and European Space Agencies (NASA and ESA), the James Webb Space Telescope (JWST)’s “primary aim is to shed light on our cosmic origins”.
So, how's the mission going? What discoveries has this multi-billion-dollar marvel of technology and engineering produced? Are the latest cosmic revelations consistent with the big bang model of the universe (as was widely predicted before JWST was launched)? Or has the data, in fact, contradicted that model? How has the biblical model of the origin of the universe fared (and were creationist predictions about JWST findings any more accurate)?
Join Dr Mark Harwood (who played a key role in the development of Australia’s national satellite system) for a fascinating and enlightening discussion on JWST, the big bang, and the Bible!
⏳ TIMESTAMPS
00:00 Teaser
00:42 Introduction: JWST findings contradict the big bang theory
01:29 A brief overview of the big bang theory
02:51 The secular dilemma: Did the universe have a beginning?
04:40 Could God have used the big bang? (No: The Bible and the big bang are incompatible)
07:06 Is there any observational support for the Big Bang?
09:31 Does the big bang adequately explain the observations?
10:08 JWST findings are a complete shock to the Big bang community:
11:43 → Large, highly structured galaxies contradict big bang predictions
12:24 → Supermassive black holes contradict big bang expectations
14:11 Are astronomers abandoning the big bang in favor of other theories?
15:50 Other examples of big bang failures:
16:05 → The Baryon Asymmetry Problem: Where’s all the antimatter?
17:55 → Initial stars: Where are all (or any of) the Population III stars?
19:21 → The Horizon Problem: How did CMB radiation get so even?
23:00 Philosophical commitments are all that keep the big bang theory alive
24:16 JWST findings are consistent with a biblical view of the universe
27:20 Creationist predictions about JWST observations have proven correct!
29:20 Conclusion: The heavens declare the glory of God!

  • Love it. I had the opportunity of chatting with many people - secularists - about JWST. From just after its launch to just after the first images. When I told them what I expected JWST to show us (fully-formed galaxies, no pop III stars, etc) I was mocked. When my expectations were confirmed I humbly reminded them that they were invited to embrace the Creator. I was blocked from the chat, removed for "spreading conspiracy theories", and again mocked. To this day I am still blocked from the chat. Please join me in praying for those who are lost and for those who deny.

    • You’re blessed. Heavenly Father I pray that you would open the eyes of the men and women in this world who are lost and blind, and I pray you would reveal yourself to them, as you have for me and others here reading and watching. In Jesus’ name I pray, Amen. That is interesting though I’m not surprised. Nothing would have made me believe before God revealed Himself to me. I would’ve written all of this off probably, simply because I didn’t really want to believe in God. I didn’t really realize I didn’t want to believe, but I certainly didn’t.

    • In the theory of the expansion of the Universe if you travel at the speed of light time stops, you can see both the past and the future, but the Universe expands much faster because you will never be able to see the Horizon Of Events that don`t yet exist. Now , the reason why the Universe is expanding faster and faster some scientists attribute it to antimatter. But a theory is just a theory , and is taken as a reference until another theory has more validity or is proven without a doubt that is a fact.

  • A note about the "let there be light"dilemma. The idea of an earth that is old and in existence,and the let there be light in verse three is not in conflict. The genesis account is describing what an earthling would see, if he was standing on the surface of the earth,and observing the creative events taking place. So in verse 2 it says that the earth which didnt have any land masses,and was essentially a water world,was dark. The hebrew word used in these initial verses translated into "light",comes from a root that conveys the meaning diffuse(verses 4,5).This suggests that initially,the atmospheric gas composition was dense enough,and composed such,that it scattered light to a large degree,it was dark at sea level.However,in later verses a clearer atmosphere forms,its not as dark at the surface as it was in verse 1.Later,land and vegetation forms,there is less scattering of light.Finally,the two luminaries are now clearly distinguished from the surface by the end of verse 19,and the two luminaries were clearly visible from earths surface.The hebrew word translated "light",now has a change in the root meaning,which denoted direct visibility. This means sun,moon,and photons were already in existence BEFORE verse 2,the universe was fully formed,and the creator is from that verse onwards, describing the sequences taking place on the earth,from an earthlings viewpoint,as if he were watching from the surface. This seems to square with general scientific thinking that the earth had an initial thick atmosphere that thins out gradually over time. The Big Bang is not inconsistent with the genesis account, it is inconsistent with our misunderstanding of what Genesis is telling us. Much thanks.

    @markvanoostrum@markvanoostrum28 күн бұрын
    • @markvanoostrom Another important distinction is that the First and Second Laws of Thermodynamics do not GOVERN reality, they DESCRIBE it. Saying that something is impossible because it violates either law is a logical error. If we observe something that violates some expression of those laws, we shouldn't deny the evidence, but rather come up with a more accurate expression of the law that is in line with what we observe. The virtual particles of subatomic physics is a case in point.

      @BrainDamagedBob@BrainDamagedBob28 күн бұрын
    • I was going to make the same comments. Accuracy is important. Having said that, the point he was making, that an infinitely old universe desires the first law of thermodynamics is still true, just for a different reason. It's true because the universe would have LONG AGO run out of energy. Another problem a steady state model has is, you cannot get to now (this moment in time), from eternity. Time is a created property, just as space, and all it contains is. Good physicists usually speak of time and space together, "space time", they will say, because they are inextricably linked.

If something was actually observed that violated the law, then that would disprove it, but the issue is that for those who believe such things about the past are essentially claiming that in the unobservable past, something happened that goes against every scientific observation ever made, and that this hypothetical event conveniently enables their worldview. A sufficient cause for the universe must be: • Eternal (if it had a beginning, then it, in turn, would need a sufficient cause) • All-powerful (to be the sufficient cause of a universe of this size and energy/matter content) • Non-material (i.e. SUPER-natural; something cannot be it's own cause) Logic and the laws of science do actually point to God as the Creator. • Why does science insist on explaining everything within the confines of physics? It doesn’t make sense to me that you can create physics within the confines of the laws of physics. Kinda like a computer being confined to binary obviously can’t create a computer - something ELSE must have made the computer first. Scientifically - there MUST be another contributor to “kick things off”. It’s not scientific to limit the explanation of everything to science. In my opinion - believing everything we obverse and study was the result of chance requires a lot more faith than believing everything was designed and created by a supernatural being (God). Our accidental or happenstance existence both defies physics (matter) and is mathematically improbable (even after 13.8Billion years - it’s not enough time for all of this to happen). So here’s my question: Why are we so afraid of the possibility of a supernatural God that we spend trillions of dollars and millions of man-hours trying to discover an alternative explanation to our very existence? “The first gulp from the glass of natural sciences will make you an atheist, but at the bottom of the glass God is waiting for you.” - Werner Heisenberg

    • I love that you're asking good questions! I think asking good questions is the start of good science. The answer to this particular one is that it's an unfortunate effect resulting from the popular term 'Big Bang" and that some understanding is required of what exactly spacetime is. It's not just some explosion in space like what we understand in our conventional 'macro' physics. Einstein proved that space and time are basicaly the same thing (like electricity and magnetism are the same thing we know as electromagnetism) and therefore was there was no single point in space that stuff exploded from. Instead, there was a single point in TIME that spacetime itself EXPANDED from. Spacetime can be a bit weird to get a hold of at first (anyone that works in GPS satellites has to account for time moving slower for satellites relative to us on earth) so I'd recommend a good science communication channel like Arvin Ash, Sabine Hossenfelder, ScienceClic or Science Asylum to help explain it. Quantum mechanics is even weirder, just look up the "double-slit experiment" which you can do for yourself at home! (or for the lazy, watch youtube where Veritasium and Looking Glass Universe both did it). But keep asking those questions!

The procedure to use the data to test hypothesis put forward are repeatable. It does not mean that since we can't reproduce the big bang in a test tube we can't study the universe. In fact, a part of physics is often envied by other sciences because of how reproducible the results are. They could talk about results far more precisely than a biologist could ever dream. It is so repeatable, they can take the text I'm writing now. Send it to space, account for space-time curvature, and send it down to where you live just so we can have this conversation. • @michaelhaigh9182 In addition to Jesus’ specific claims about Himself, His disciples also acknowledged the deity of Christ. They claimed that Jesus had the right to forgive sins-something only God can do-as it is God who is offended by sin (Acts 5:31; Colossians 3:13; Psalm 130:4; Jeremiah 31:34). In close connection with this last claim, Jesus is also said to be the one who will “judge the living and the dead” (2 Timothy 4:1). Thomas cried out to Jesus, “My Lord and my God!” (John 20:28). Paul calls Jesus “great God and Savior” (Titus 2:13) and points out that prior to His incarnation Jesus existed in the “form of God” (Philippians 2:5-8). God the Father says regarding Jesus: “Your throne, O God, will last forever and ever” (Hebrews 1:8). John states that “in the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word [Jesus] was God” (John 1:1). Examples of Scriptures that teach the deity of Christ are many (see Revelation 1:17, 2:8, 22:13; 1 Corinthians 10:4; 1 Peter 2:6-8; Psalm 18:2, 95:1; 1 Peter 5:4; Hebrews 13:20), but even one of these is enough to show that Christ was considered to be God by His followers. Jesus is also given titles that are unique to YHWH (the formal name of God) in the Old Testament. The Old Testament title “redeemer” (Psalm 130:7; Hosea 13:14) is used of Jesus in the New Testament (Titus 2:13; Revelation 5:9). Jesus is called Immanuel-“God with us”-in Matthew 1. In Zechariah 12:10, it is YHWH who says, “They will look on me, the one they have pierced.” But the New Testament applies this to Jesus’ crucifixion (John 19:37; Revelation 1:7). If it is YHWH who is pierced and looked upon, and Jesus was the one pierced and looked upon, then Jesus is YHWH. Paul interprets Isaiah 45:22-23 as applying to Jesus in Philippians 2:10-11. Further, Jesus’ name is used alongside God’s in prayer “Grace and peace to you from God our Father and the Lord Jesus Christ” (Galatians 1:3; Ephesians 1:2). This would be blasphemy if Christ were not deity. The name of Jesus appears with God’s in Jesus’ commanded to baptize “in the name [singular] of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit” (Matthew 28:19; see also 2 Corinthians 13:14). Actions that can be accomplished only by God are credited to Jesus. Jesus not only raised the dead (John 5:21, 11:38-44) and forgave sins (Acts 5:31, 13:38), He created and sustains the universe (John 1:2; Colossians 1:16-17). This becomes even clearer when one considers YHWH said He was alone during creation (Isaiah 44:24). Further, Christ possesses attributes that only deity can have: eternality (John 8:58), omnipresence (Matthew 18:20, 28:20), omniscience (Matthew 16:21), and omnipotence (John 11:38-44). Now, it is one thing to claim to be God or to fool someone into believing it is true, and something else entirely to prove it to be so. Christ offered many miracles as proof of His claim to deity. Just a few of Jesus’ miracles include turning water to wine (John 2:7), walking on water (Matthew 14:25), multiplying physical objects (John 6:11), healing the blind (John 9:7), the lame (Mark 2:3), and the sick (Matthew 9:35; Mark 1:40-42), and even raising people from the dead (John 11:43-44; Luke 7:11-15; Mark 5:35). Moreover, Christ Himself rose from the dead. Far from the so-called dying and rising gods of pagan mythology, nothing like the resurrection is seriously claimed by other religions, and no other claim has as much extra-scriptural confirmation. There are at least twelve historical facts about Jesus that even non-Christian critical scholars will admit: 1. Jesus died by crucifixion. 2. He was buried. 3. His death caused the disciples to despair and lose hope. 4. Jesus’ tomb was discovered (or was claimed to be discovered) to be empty a few days later. 5. The disciples believed they experienced appearances of the risen Jesus. 6. After this, the disciples were transformed from doubters into bold believers. 7. This message was the center of preaching in the early Church. 8. This message was preached in Jerusalem. 9. As a result of this preaching, the Church was born and it grew. 10. Resurrection day, Sunday, replaced the Sabbath (Saturday) as the primary day of worship. 11. James, a skeptic, was converted when he also saw the resurrected Jesus. 12. Paul, an enemy of Christianity, was converted by an experience which he believed to be an appearance of the risen Jesus. Even if someone were to object to this specific list, only a few are needed to prove the resurrection and establish the gospel: Jesus’ death, burial, resurrection, and appearances (1 Corinthians 15:1-5). While there may be some theories to explain one or two of the above facts, only the resurrection explains and accounts for them all. Critics admit that the disciples claimed they saw the risen Jesus. Neither lies nor hallucinations can transform people the way the resurrection did. First, what would they have had to gain? Christianity was not popular and it certainly did not make them any money. Second, liars do not make good martyrs. There is no better explanation than the resurrection for the disciples’ willingness to die horrible deaths for their faith. Yes, many people die for lies that they think are true, but people do not die for what they know is untrue. In conclusion, Christ claimed He was YHWH, that He was deity (not just “a god” but the one true God); His followers (Jews who would have been terrified of idolatry) believed Him and referred to Him as God. Christ proved His claims to deity through miracles, including the world-altering resurrection. No other hypothesis can explain these facts. Yes, the deity of Christ is biblical.

  • According to big bang theory, as I understand it, when expansion began the outer edge was expanding outward at infinite velocity. Think about that. How far can it expand, very quickly, at that rate? I've asked a few physicists about that, but they don't talk about that. It makes a serious difficulty in dating the universe; makes the time much much less than 13.8 billion years...

    @user-pm3mw8xw8d@user-pm3mw8xw8d27 күн бұрын
    • Cosmic expansion at the rate scientist claim is impossible. I don't believe for one minute that the universe expanded from nothing to about half the size it is now within a second.

      @michaelharrington75@michaelharrington7523 күн бұрын
    • Then the physicists you spoke to are incompetent or you are choosing to ignore what they're saying. Physicists LOVE to talk about it. Those mysteries are partly what made them want to BE physicists. The answer to your question is that there was no 'outer edge'. The evidence so far suggests that the universe continues infinitely based on the fact that the geometry of the universe is flat. What this means is that if you follow two straight lines, they will not eventually converge like they would on a globe or move apart like they would on a saddle, but instead continue forever. So while it's possible that the universe may be closed in some way, the evidence is strong that it is infinite in all directions. So with an infinite universe in mind, the Big Bang was not an explosion in space, it was an EXPANSION of SPACETIME. Space and time are the same thing, so when we look out and see vast distances in space, we also see vast distances in time (e.g. light-years measurement). So there was no central point in space like an explosion, but there was a central point in time. The age of the universe is calculated by studying the oldest stars, the cosmic microwave background radiation, the hubble constant, the expansion rate, computer modelling amongst other pieces of evidence and now this most recent JWST data. They ALL agree that the universe must be somewhere between 13.7 and 13.9 billion years old relative to the earth. The only part that's really up for debate is the exact age, but we know the ballpark.

Verses 2 to 5 may begin the first of 6 "days" when Jehovah is preparing the earth for life. His spirit cleared away whatever was preventing the light from the already created sun from reaching the surface. On the 4th day he cleared the atmosphere and the waters above it so the sun moon and stars that were already created were clearly visible.

Comes then the big bang model, that was a bit more indigestion inducing, creation was even more obvious. Current discoveries indeed hint at the idea that the current models may not be correct. However, creation is still there as a viable option. God has always said that He is evident in creation, everywhere.

With ether, the particles are likely to be single entities and you must have 2 or more parts to spin or at least to store energy into a spin. However, in my experience, people who stick rigidly to the young earth creation hypothesis, ( or belief cos it’s not really a hypothesis, as it’s just reading from scripture), are also the kind of people to deny Einstein’s relativity, a theory that was rejected by the Catholic Church in 1905, & has been proved correct time again.

    • @@martinhoy1 Thanks also for your kind reply. If I take a little time on Einstein's Relativity which is basically consistent on Relativity of all things(even though it combines some variables e.g time, space & others) in my view. If we take wisdom a little from relativistic theory which says things react, functions and relate with other objects base on their location, I guess my Relativity calculations will give me a different view if I make moon my initial location relative to earth. So I can conclude that all our knowledge, theories and discoveries here on earth is relative to earth because earth is our initial location which form the basis of all our views and beliefs, from another location which spiritual location can be one will make our calculations become entirely different in units. In my early class in physics we have many units from different countries e.g UK, Germany e.t.c before forming the S.I units, these units are relative to each country. The knowledge we have here is relative to earth, when we get to other location we shall see more relativistic knowledge. 1 John 3:1-3, "...when we see him(Jesus), we shall be like him ..."
