  • Enjoy your interesting commentary on my Cycling News trainer homologation piece, Shane. It has transformative potential for cycling esports. Curious to see the impact on the recreational market. Thank you for sharing!

    • I’m curious how you inferred the make and model of the trainers tested. The full text reads, “The smart trainers are denoted with letters to obscure the brand and model tested.” Please share your thoughts, Sir.

    • They published the accuracy, max gradient, maximum power specifications, and prices. Price aside, it was pretty easy to fingerprint the other specifications to make/model with a relatively high level of confidence.

We loved it so much we got Little Lama one too. We'll have to post a family tshirt shot somewhere soon.

  • Honest opinion sought from you Shane, planning a week and half trip from Sydney to either Ballarat, Beechworth or Bright? Gravel and MTB will be packed into car! obsessed with the b’s. yes I’ve ridden all these places before, loved them all equally, but they are all different. My usual day is a cruisey 4-7 hour ride so depending on terrain that’s 50-120km. Followed by some relaxing time; movie,walk, food etc.

    @joshuanicholson420@joshuanicholson4203 ай бұрын
    • Bright in No.1 riding spot for sure. I haven't ridden Beechworth much at all, nothing offroad there. Ballarat would be up there if you haven't been here before and want to take in some Australian historical places (Eureka Stockade, Sovereign Hill, etc). Lots of good riding, food, and hospitality around here too. Hit me up if you do end up anywhere near Ballarat.

    @bdijns@bdijns2 ай бұрын
    • If I can get a hold of them, yes. To be honest I’m not actively seeking a set. The price and battery spec really isn’t competitive to the alternatives on the market.

    @p5ng476@p5ng4762 ай бұрын
    • Entirely your call. The trainer will continue to be compatible with Zwift and other platforms for a VERY long time, well beyond the two year warranty period.

      @gplama@gplama2 ай бұрын
  • Has Zwift released something special that they mentioned they are doing for those that hit level 100? Feels like we should've had a couple that reached that milestone already.

    @Xhadp@Xhadp3 ай бұрын
  • Slightly off topic, but have you ever reviewed the accuracy of trainers under varying unit temperature conditions. I'm told by Wahoo that although temperature is used in calibration, none of the trainers have "active" temperature compensation. I raise this because I've found that my Kickr Core shows significant variation from my Assioma pedals on rides longer than about 30 minutes. Zone 2 rides are fine, but if I'm in the type of ride that pushes the watts and the Core gets hotter, the power variation can reach as much as 6%. Just me, or is this a common problem? Are their units that can overcome this and stay accurate regardless of the unit heating up?

    @petedannatt@petedannatt3 ай бұрын
    • Testing equipment through a range of temperatures is pretty time consuming. I'll do it when I see things drift over time during my standard testing protocol. With the introduction of auto-calibration on the CORE, temperature drift should be minimised. Assuming you're coasting for a few seconds (or enough time to trigger the auto-calibration).

      @gplama@gplama3 ай бұрын
    • @@gplamathanks and yep, I guess you spend enough time testing already! Sounds like a significant improvement from Wahoo. I'm assuming that would mean a replacement unit rather than a firmware upgrade to my 2018 Kick Core. TBH, I can accommodate the variation for training, but I was throwing out some unexpectedly high watts in a Zwift race last year. Luckily (!?) 6% is nowhere near enough to get me up with the leaders 😅

      @petedannatt@petedannatt3 ай бұрын
    • All Kickr CORE units support the new auto-calibration feature. Firmware 1.3.17 onwards is what you're after.

    • Glad to report much better results after an initial test, though it took 4 to 5 mins for the Kickr and Assiomas to get fully in synch. After that they were within about 1.5 to 2% for the rest of the session. Cant complain at that!

      @luigibirillo6629@luigibirillo66292 ай бұрын
    • 5 second mean max is highly influenced by the recording device. That's not enough data to make a general claim that Kickrs read higher than Neos. There's also multiple models of Kickrs (and Neos) that have to be defined too. I'd like to see a lot more data before supporting any such claim.

  • The UCI can just supply a device and/or protocol to perform a certification. That wouldn't cost the manufacturers that much. It would mean trusting the manufacturers. Market pressure would provide incentive for honesty.

  • Shane I love this content as with all your content. Is it just me or does it seem like so much crap now days we’ve overdone this e sports thing. My smart trainer revolutionized my fitness and training. The word TRAINER in smart trainers is ignored. I guess I’m too simple but why would UCI even get involved. I guess there’s money in the E racing which is absurd. I’m not gonna get too serious about mine or anyone else’s results in a Zwift race except for how it pertains to my TRAINING. If someone is cheating I couldn’t care less, it’s meaningless. Ride On let’s not get our undies in a tussle about e sports. It’s just a trainer all be it smart.

  • While I haven't looked at it yet it sounds like they have tried to put some engineering behind things. I certainly hope they focused on engineering side unlike 99% of the powermeter accuracy papers: "Hi I nothing of engineering, X is the rightest powermeter as it's the most expensive and reputation, so everyone's error is measured as how wrong from that powermeter they are. Conclusion, since I used X as the reference, it is the mostest rightest ever! and thus all others are wrong by comparison by Y Percent" Published by 3 Human Kinetics PHds.
