16:04 - You phrased it perfectly... "Pay half as much, do twice as much work." I do feel like that is a consideration not many make or just completely miss. We try to buy accessories for convenience or add enjoyment, not to make more work for ourselves.
Great introduction to the new IGS computer. 👏👏👏 My first reaction to this product is…FINALLY, SOMEONE IS ADDRESSING THE PROBLEM OF HUGE BEZELS ON BIKE COMPUTERS! Sorry for shouting. 🤦♂️ It will be exciting to hear your review of the actual performance of this unit. Can’t wait!
Thank you for sharing it with us. Looking forward for more information with the depth review. Ride On!
Finally, a GPS unit big enough to display my excuse for taking the wrong turn!
Great content as always Shane!
glad you are covering it. i've been happy with my IGS630 and sold my edge explore 2 this morning
May I ask how long have you had the 630 for and what's your experience with navigation and rerouting? I'm also not able to decide if I should look for the 630s or if the 630 is fin.
@@cbiz2cool not too long, maybe 600km but enough to decide i preferred it over the garmin navigation itself is fine, nothing crazy but does the job. but the normal 630 doesnt reroute, the 630s does. but i always hated rerouting on garmin
Really looking forward to how well this unit works. Competition amongst the big players is always welcome.
Looks interesting, you have my attention! Great Video.... again :)
Thankyou for a very honest review
valid point regarding the ecosystem when considering which unit to get. Got a Tacx turbo and just bought a venu3, so I guess sticking with Garmin for the cycling computer as well makes sense
Very promising device. Looking forward for this review.
Btw always top notch video . Above all , no annoying useless background music
Thank you for the review and your continued excellent work in this space...we are all better for your efforts! I have been a Garmin user forever and have been on the 1030 Plus for many years. I cannot find any reason why I would want to leave Garmin and I cannot find a reason to upgrade my 1030 Plus as it does everything I need very well and the newer generation does not have any 'must have' features for me. What I really want is for Strava to have the feature sets that are available in Garmin Connect and to a lesser degree Training Peaks. I have evolved to using Strava as my primary tracking mechanism, mostly for the convenience, however, Stava has always been lacking in items such as calendaring, better goals/tracking, etc. Strava has made some progress in those areas, however, it has been far too slow.
Nice overview so far. Really looking forward to your full review. I was expecting this video as I saw your comment on Reddit. I am looking for a new unit, but don’t know if this would be a suitable choice. The alternative could be the hammerhead 3 which might be released in May ? 🤔
That's a really nice looking GPS. It appears this is already on sale here in China at a price of 2500RMB (about US$345). Can't wait to see your review to find out if it's actually any good.
Bro Garmin edge 540 is 320 euro 😂. Wtf to buy igpsport
I bought a 618 almost 6 years ago. Navigation on that device more or less "well meant hints", but better than nothing. Everything else worked great. It was rock solid, never let me down, and is now in use by my wife. Now, I have a 1030+. Yes, display sizem app, ecosystem and background sync makes all the difference when you ride often. I am keep to see what the new 800 can do.
Mine ended up with the dreaded micro usb connector failure after 3 years.
I have sort of 'committed' to Garmin through years of using their products and while I know it is possible to mix and match between different brands I just find it so simple and easy when everything works across e.g. watch, chest HRM, head unit, and mobile phone app/PC app, without having to manually import or export anything at all. That said, if you are on a tight budget there is a lot to be gained by going down the mix and match route but it could include a fair few headaches and some loss of compatible data across several different platforms.
Love that promotion video at the start. Where shall I meet you 3 lads for our ride? Oh, shall we meet right in the middle of the road?
Similar to car ads with no other traffic on the roads. 🤣
When to expect the full review? Exiting stuff!
Hopefully by the end of the month.
This looks like an interesting new unit. What I'd like to see is a comparison of their graphics display options compared to Karoo's fields Heart Rate/Zones and Gears which I find to be great for quick glances.
Thanks Shane
I was given a new at the time stages unit for free a couple of years ago. The set up was relatively easy and the look of the unit is actually really awesome after coming from a Garmin 520. Outside of that, the thing is the most inaccurate GPS device I have ever used in my life. The thing is barely usable in wide open road riding for any sort of accurate distance measurement, but completely shits the bed in any sort of MTB riding.
Really looking for that review. I really want to see the battery life and the map performance. Also want to known if i can upload a training program to the device too ?!?
Hello, your product video is perfect for me. I need a new bike computer soon. I'm looking forward to your test. Either Hammerhead karoo 3, which is coming soon, or igpsport 800. If the price difference is only 50 euros, I think I will buy the karoo 3.
I do like IGPS units but they still need have more quality control regarding the software and etc. On garmin ecosystem everything just works and fast. With my IGPS unit sometimes I was unable to sync my activities because the system was off, or bugs happening in routes for example. But the units standalone have a great quality and battery life in general.
Shimano DI2 support 😊 - that's good news for the Karoo owners !
im a big fan of my 630 i must say.
I use Garmin Connect for my running... I wish Gamin Connect would be open to other cycling GPS units
Looks pretty good but my old experience with igpsport was that parts were just not there.
Damn, just ordered the 630 today. The newer 630S is nicer with double the RAM and route re-routing but I didn't need more memory and hopefully they'll migrate the re-routing to the 630. This doesn't appear to be available yet in the US and once it is it'll probably be way more expensive than the 630 so I doubt that I've missed anything by not waiting. However it might drive the prices of older units down.
Honestly, this looks pretty amazing. Really looking forward to your testing. Hopefully radar and ANT light control works well. I'm probably going to upgrade from my Edge 830 to this iGPSport iGS800
You better think twice. Keep your Garmin and forget IGPSPORT. I have an IGPSPORT and my next cycling computer will be a Garmin.
@@ruudjanssen14 which model do you have? I imagine you'd have pretty negative views of Garmin if you buy their cheapest head unit
I have an IGPSPORT IGS620. I cycle 6 days a week with the cycling computer 12.000 km in a year. I do structered workouts every ride which I load in the cycling computer. I posted already my thoughts about this head unit and brand in the comments. My next purchase will be a Garmin.
I had a terrible experience with an IGS630 unit and I wouldn't be exactly enthusiastic about this iGS800. Plus, I miss the times when a company would release a new product with the same price of a product from the same category released in the previous year.
My iGPSPORT 630 have 30+ hours battery time during normal use. I charge it every month with 10+ hour ride per week. It's insane. So I believe 50 hour battery life is probably close.
Interesting I am just about to replace my 7 year old Garmin 810 have been looking at the Garmin explorer 2 , I am riding the GDMBR touring pace and looking for a bigger screen the 1040 is twice the price and has a lot of features I don't need or use,. now looking forward for the next video. only got 6 weeks to make my mind up 🤔
Off topic but I've been thinking how nice it would be to have cycling sunglasses with analogue customisable Heads Up Display.
Hey Shane, I’m really looking forward to your in-depth review of this unit when you’re ready. I’ve been with Garmin since the 705’s with a short stint with the original Element and Bolt units. Currently on the 1030 plus for road and gravel and 830 for MTB (The 1000 series lever like shape doesn’t play nice with the type of MTB riding I like… ) . My issue with the 800 series is the screen size just isn’t quite sufficient for the tightly packed “ball of yarn “ type trail systems found in my area. This unit looks promising. Side note, you seem happy with the Garmin connect app. Perhaps it’s user error on my part; but …. Unless I update the ride to Connect via the mobile app, it won’t ever show in the mobile app. In other words, if at the end of the ride if the unit (1030 or 830) connects to WiFi and uploads the ride, Connect web will show the ride, but the mobile app will never reflect that it happened at all. All of my riding buddies have the exact same experience; so much so that they stopped using the mobile app all together. Likewise, if I ride Zwift, it updates Connect (web) but not Mobile. If this is NOT user error (and I hope it is) seems like a real head scratcher. Any thoughts?
As someone who runs and rides. I run with a Garmin watch and have a wahoo bolt V 1 for my rides. I regret not buying the Garmin edge. Garmin Connect is amazing and having all my data sync in the one spot and all the post workout analysis I’ll be buying a Garmin edge soon even if they are twice the price because for me no one offers anything better.
I have a question on the garmin 1040. Any 3rd party app or way to keep food/drink alerts on the screen longer like the wahoo? They flash so quickly if you are not looking at the screen you don't see it. Thanks!
Following my recent experiences with Garmin Support or there the lack of I would welcome IGS into the game. It's my impression that while Garmin is presently top of the tree, they have become complacent and arrogant as to how they arrived at this position. This has been due only to the support of their customer base and in line with the old adage, best not bite the hand that feeds you. Look forward to your ride impressions in later vids. Thanks for the update
Does Garmin or Wahoo Mounts fit? I think the screen isnt really dark, it just has a non-white background.
can you review the magene c606 please
As a fellow reviewer / writer, I fully support your thoughts on the lower end of bike computers. I reviewd the iGPSport 630 the other day. The biggest downside for me was the companion app, which was just very mediocre at best. Curious to see if the iGS800 actually does have rerouting. The i630 didn't (which is not a problem for me, but it is for most people).
Updated iGS630s already got the re-routing function afaik.. This function is on the feature-set of the new iGS800 also...
esperamos ansiosamente un inforne detallado del comportamiento del igs800 en ruta con sus cosas a favor y en contra y si verdaderamente metece la pena o en su contra mejor volver a Garmin, gracias
Hi Shane, do You have info about the brand of the gnss chip inside? is it ublox? or the well-known Airoha from Garmins or the latest dualband Sony?
previous generation used u-blox. so i think, probably u-blox.
I like your elephant route
🐘
when will it be released to general public?
worst company, I had a 630 model, they promised to add new features, in the end they made an identical 630S computer with new options instead of adding them to the previous model, by the way, they also stopped releasing updates since last year, still no one update was not released, I no longer want to deal with this product. no support
That’s one more bulledpoint for user friction
Interesting. And with a massive amount of upvotes I’ll dig into this a little more. Maybe iGPSport can comment on their commitment to providing updates for the iGS800.
That’s exactly what happened to me with Bryton. First they told Ride Adelaide that the Bryton 420 would have structured workouts and so Ride Adelaide conveyed it in his video so. I bought the Bryton 420 and no structured workouts many months after the review. DM-ed Bryton on IG, no reply. DM-ed them on FB, no reply. Sent them an email, no reply. Next thing I know they released not one but several new models. Total ass hats.
Buy the s version and you re still below the wahoo and garmin ridiculous prizes.
What are you talking about? They literally just updated the firmware
Is the back tab replaceable? It's grey-ish/metallic color kind of stands out. Wish the major brands did it in metal and offered replacements.
Not sure if it's replaceable, but it is metal, according to a so-so Google translation of a Chinese website.
Super interested to see how the battery life story shakes out. As a bikepacker, I'm always looking to maximize my GPS. It also looks like they have some power prongs on the back like a Garmin.
I cycled 15,000 km with an IGPSPORT model IGS 620 cycling computer. But in the future I will buy another brand. Here's why. - There is no audio signal if the target power of your workout changes, so you have to continuously look at the cycling computer, which is very dangerous in traffic. - It takes 3 attempts each time to connect my cycling computer to my phone. - If I load a TrainingPeaks workout via my phone to the cycling computer, six digits will be placed in front of the file name, which will make the file name too long and will not load later. The same applies to GPX routes that I create with the IGPSPORT website.
That's a pricey unit for a not-very-popular brand. Maybe Im wrong and it is worth it but at launch is not very appealing
Brand popularity rarely dictates price … just look at all the small brand bikes and frames out there which can often be more than ‘popular’ brand equivalent. Price is dictated by what the unit costs to produce (including a proportion of R&D, distributed/retailer markup, taxes etc, and what the brand thinks they can sell the product for.
Does the unit work with strava live segment? Thanks
waiting for karoo3, for me the best navigation and screen ...
Unless they fix battery life and make it actually repairable, it's not worth it. Software is awesome but the hardware it's hosted on, yuck
Unfortunately, the igs800 does not provide real-time climb assistant function. Like previous generation products, it is necessary to put in a path (gpx) file to use the climb function.
Oh…. That’s disappointing.
@gplama Nice unboxing. Have you already had your hand on the Cycplus L7? It's already ob my bike and its really great!
Not yet.
What is screen visibility in compare with Stages Dash 200 (if you sill use it 😊)?
The Dash units are so damn bright! That’s about all I have to say about them. I stopped using them when I noted the GPS tracking was extremely wonky here in AU and their maps were years out of date (this was the Stages and Giant branded units). With minimal updates in years from Stages I think those devices are effectively end of life.
Would love to see a fair comparison against units of similar prices, or at least close to it and not top of the line, like the 1040 solar.
There really isn’t much difference in features from the Edge 540 though to the 1040 Solar. Touchscreen, form factor, storage.
@@gplama Also you seems to be the only english speaker youtuber with this new unit, any news on if IGPSport give reviews unit to other youtubers? Greetings from where the world ends, Chile.
I would be interested in a different device if i could still upload to garmin connect. I have had a garmin watch for a while now and connect has become my primary fitness analyzer. I have stopped paying for strava too.
Not directly. This is a Garmin only service. You’d need to look at having a third party tool do that upload/sync (and be sure Garmin don’t ban it). For years Garmin Connect would not accept FIT files from Wahoo units regardless of how they were uploaded to it.
When can we expect the full review?
UI looks like Garmin’s, but to be honest, a bit better.
Can you get hold of a Magene C606 and give us a breakdown and your thoughts?
I have one and have thrown a TON of feedback over to Magene. They've sent over a beta firmware and are in the process of responding (hopefully rapidly) to a few of the issues I've encountered. I'll give them a little more time to get the firmware updated and pushed to the public release stream.
@@gplama Thanks for the quick response! Glad to hear it, I've got one but I'm not very technically minded when it comes to computers. I'm happy so far.
There is no good reviews of 630S, how it compares to 630 and 800 that's coming.
Does the device fit to a Garmin or Wahoo computer holder with the mounting puck?
Garmin 1/4 mount compatible.
When will it be for general sale.
I'm sure this is great unit, but today my 8year old elmnt died ( reused to connect to any anything) and a roam v2 was bought, sometimes its hard to leave an eco system
Will there be a review of the magene c606?
Hopefully. Waiting on a few firmware updates to land on it.
Hello, does it recognize a climb (distance, elevation percentage, etc.) without needing to enter a route? Thanks
no, pregunté a IGSPORT y me dijeron que solo cuando se está siguiendo una ruta y le metes un gpx con datos de desnivel, es posible que en próximas actualizaciones eso cambie y sea de forma predictiva
That mount looks really very similar to a Garmin mount. Does it fit?
Yep. It's compatible with all Garmin 1/4 turn mounts.
When will this be available for sale?
I just got a 630s, came with no maps for my location. Had to borrow a laptop to connect the unit with a USB cable to the laptop to display the map files on my computer. Countries have 2 letter codes to identify them. Deleted one country to make room to copy and paste my location map. Was like 1900s computing. So, no map maintenance in the the app, no way to include detailed regional maps, so useless for MTB.
FYI - already available in Japan through Amazon @ 53,900 yen...
I wish they'd allow me to buy the computer via shipping to the US through Amazon JP - it looks like it's exactly what I'm looking for.
@@yariban9735 Yes - I checked and it will not ship to the US - - great price after exchange though - around 350 usd
does it have climbpro like feature?
It does. It only works when following a route you’ve loaded. It is also very limited in what it detects as a ‘climb’. On a recent rider the Edge detected three climbs where as this iGS800 only defected one, and only the top section of the climb.
One of my biggest issues with my Garmin is the ginormous screen borders... seems unnecessary in 2024 when even cheap cell phones can have nearly borderless designs.
These cycling computers are crazy expensive. You can buy a Pixal 6 and stick it on your handle bars and have more connectivity...
I just had a thought, if your battery life is over 24 hours, and that’s quoted with back light off, you’ll never actually get that life, because unless it’s Alaska in June, your going to need to use the back light if your ride is that long 😂
I had a IGS610 which was absolutely TERRIBLE. I lost 20% of my rides, it crashed without saving, app was buggy. terrible hardware and even worse software. but this looks legit and might even be tempted to give this brand a try again even though I absolutely HATED the 610 back in 2018. lets see what hammerhead releases in the next couple of weeks...the Karoo 2 certainly needs an update.
Do I want a FULLY Chinese GPS device on my bike at all times? I'm not so sure...
Good to see alternatives to the terrible UI/UX of the established brands…
Wahoo has its funky bits but I think (and bought it) because I really like its UI. The UX is not bad too
Wouldn't get too exited, I have the igs630 and if It's anything like that then the UI is basically a thinly vailed copy of the one on the Edge 520+. It even occasionally does that thing Garmin's do where it just refuses point-blank to upload a ride, and you have to go manual so they got the UX down too. 🤣 p.s joking (kind of) aside, I do like it, great little HU and well worth the price.
Doesn't sound like you're impressed with with screen colours. Look forward to your main review
screen display looks really washed out - they need to do something about the contrast of the unit.
Maybe the screen protector isn't helping either
Can hear you rummy rumble at 9:24 and at 10:08. Or is that your pet frog 🐸?
hahah! Must be a frog.... I ate. :)
where is my data stored?
CCP server...
iGPSport? Do I sense a hidden relation with… GPLama? 🤣🤣🤣
Hah, iGPno.
Then, I'll look forward to iGPLamaSport. 😆
You need a phone and internet for this device?!
Not out on the road, no.
@@gplama Do I need to upload it onto a phone?
And my iGS620 still won’t sync to GarminConnect….
The iGS620?
Correct
Garmin are very selective of who they'll partner with and allow data upload from. Makes sense as Connect is free. In the scenario where they allow everything, that'd be a free pass for third parties to only make hardware and rely on the goodwill of Garmin to do all the heavy lifting with cloud storage, fitness tracking, etc. That's not a zero cost exercise for Garmin. The list of Connect partners is here: support.garmin.com/en-AU/?faq=8L3Z4gEmTk6sXV7ido1Uz6
And I understand that. The products are good (much better than average) for the cost and I enjoy using the iGS620, always have. It gives me all the data and has seamless connection between all the sensors that I need. The only downside I’ve found is that it won’t connect to GarminConnect. Which, in and of itself, isn’t a deal breaker, I just have to remember to start my fenix6 when I start the head unit. The review of the new release is fantastic, I like the idea of the iclimb (wish there was a firmware update, as another commenter mentioned, as hinted by IGPSPORT in the past, which hasn’t come).
Might not be a terrible choice with the new magene having awfully little memory, garmin being $$$$ and karoo 3 looking to be quite underwhelming
Agreed. Saw some possible leaked K3 images, and if true, very underwhelming. Almost identical to K2. Have started looking for other options, this one is interesting.
Yeah, the software with any tech device is what you're paying for nowadays.
“Karoo 3” slip of the tongue?😂
Just baiting people.... ;)
I will just buy a small used iphone for that price lmao
No Buttons , battery life, gets to hot in summer , to cold in winter - smartphone does not make sense on a bike
Igpsport=zero update firmware LOL
Touch screen? Thats a pass from me. Ill stick with my lezyne. True 48h battery life, and its only $200.
I won't say anything is better than a karoo 2 (as it's a pile of 💩) as i tried a 1030 once & it wasn't good but this seems ok.. 🤔
There’s a lot to dive into with any new unit. I just hope the mapping/routing are on par with other units I have.
@@gplamaLooks good initially tho..screen looked brighter then the Garmin 👍
I guess it depends what you want from a unit I love my Karoo 2
@@alantait5968 Alan is 5 years old the android version is about 10yrs on android 8 the current vers. is 14! Hiya got multiple problems but yes, does the basics but doesn't 'bat it out the park.. 🤷♂️ the batteries BAD too..
I like the bundled accessories. Hope the review pans out well. Can’t complain about competition
Haha, this is just a Garmin carbon-copy
So, a competitor to Garmin 840 for about 50 bucks less? Who the hell will buy this?
That's a very good point if you consider the lifespan of the device/ownership being ~3 years. That's less than $20 a year for a lot of proven features/support/Garmin Connect access.
Fair point.. so what would the price diferrence have to be to make you switch? and what if: 1) it is really easier to follow the route on screen (crappy on 840) 2) rerouting is quicker and better (doubt it, but what if?) Still, these are only "ifs"... To be honest I don't mind if I have to make 2 more clicks to upload route to the device, if these "ifs" become true.
Switch? No realistic amount. New customers $250 price max? If you are the sort of person who is annoyed by 1), you might fix this issue by switching to a noname competitor, but I GUARANTEE you will discover several other new problems that will annoy you just as much.
Not sure why people get so excited by cheap products like this - it’s the software and infrastructure behind it that provides the value - GPs head units are pretty much bottom of the food chain devices.
Similar to cheaper power meters we were seeing out of China, one day they'll get it right. The Magene P505 is a good example. Admittedly I did test a LOT of lower-end power meters in the years prior to the P505 being released without a lot of success. Similarly for GPS units, the gap between the high end 'western' units and offerings like the iGP800 is closing rapidly. How small that gap now is in early 2024 is what I'm interested in.
Because not everyone can afford the insane prices that big name brands have, specially in places with lower income. Im from latinamerica and here the big brands prices are just prohibitive.
You lost me at touchscreen.
Turned off when you unboxed, that is massive. Just like smartphones everything seems to be made bigger and bigger...a shame.
The Froome image at 04:49 has him in Team Sky kit. Confused dot gif
