Wahoo ELEMNT Updates: Music Control // ANT+ Light Support // GoPro Control
A number of long awaited and much requested updates land today on the Wahoo ELEMNT cycling computers. Music/Media Control, ANT+ Light Support, GoPro Control (soon!), and a number of additional workout sync sources from various workout apps.
Update: And I've been informed it's only the BOLT V2 and ROAM V2 getting these features. Fingers crossed they roll out media control to the previous units (as I can confirm it does work on them.... 🤷🏻♂️)

Apparently ALL of these updates are limited to V2 ELEMNT computers only. Sigh. I can report a lot of this does work on older units... but likely due to my account being in some kind of Stranger Things state with a beta enabled account.
Media control is working pretty well here on both revisions of the ROAM V1. If this is an Android only thing, roll with it. Nobody uses Android. ;)

Yes! I've made an IOS app that allows to control the camera through the music playback.
All right, so for everyone who can't get the light support working, do the following: You have to repair the radar in PAIRING MODE (hold the power button for 2 sec from turned off, purple flashes) and pair it then. For some reason, you could also pair it when not in this mode. Maybe then it's just a radar, not a light. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯ Works with Bolt v2 and Varia RTL510.

Thank you. It did not work for me although I was pretty sure that it had been initially paired in pairing mode. I paired it again and it is working now.

That's a pretty cool update, even the Beta one. I would love it if they would expand the camera connectivity to DJI and Insta360.
Excellent work Wahoo. I went from my bolt 2 to edge 830 just for that radar light control and have been missing my bolt ever since, i can go back to bolt now so happy days for me. Love to see this kind of software work. Thank Lama for continues updates news.

Your video about this more helpful and specific then DC rainmakers today. Been waiting for this since they announced the radar support a few years ago.
Be awesome if they can do something when the radar goes off that it records on the GoPro. Like the big Garmin radar does.

So glad Wahoo are making this better. I love Wahoo products, and they dont yet have their own Radar solution. I've been using Garmins with it for a few years now and its just brilliant. I'm wondering now if the corresponding FIT files produced by wahoo after each ride, might now include new FIT data as a result? This would be very cool if so!
Big features 😳 Music control was one major reason for me to move to 540. Now I'm jealous of GoPro remote control 😬😅
woah, another update? well, as someone who listens to podcasts or music during longer rides where there is no soothing nature ambience, media control is a great addition. as for workouts, i found a workaround to store workouts on the unit, not sure if i need this, but for some its great I'm sure.

Support for ant+ lights was something I was waiting for since I bought varia. Now I’m waiting for automated switch between day and night modes basing on built in ambient light sensor. But still I’m very happy, finally I don’t have to count clicks on varia’s switch.

JFC have I been waiting forever for the Auto light function! This has bugged me for years since I don't need the radar blinking constantly if there's noone behind me. It should help with the battery life as well. I'm so excited right now I could go out riding the entire day!

I found them on some random late night music festival replay on TV here. Watched them play Smile and have had them on my playlists ever since. Their live shows are on repeat while on the indoor trainer too.
Finally! This was a long overdue update and got even more functionality than expected. Radar and light control works perfectly, i expect quite a big battery benefit with light off, radar on and only blinking when a car is in sight. Exactly what i want for ultra road races and bikepacking. Music control with Iphone12 and Spotify works too on my Elmnt Roam V2. Will try the Bolt V1 of my GF.
Does Auto On work for the radar? Android or Apple?
Unfortunately these features will only roll to V2 Elemnt units. My older GPS devices had the media control enabled as part of a beta/test. I was informed of this after publishing the video. Maybe it's something they can update the V1 units with in the future with enough encouragement.
The radar without light doesn't work at all! I can only switch it on at the start and off at the end. One mode remains on while driving! Explain how else it should work. Without light, no radar bars appear on the Wahoo!
works for me just fine, but you need to switch to the light off mode on the headunit, not on the radar by button.@@chrisr.2371

For the app and the unit to register the new things, have the radar on, play some music and fiddle with radar & light related settings in the app. I didn't have a media page until I started playing music. And I could not control the light on my Garmin 515 unit until I toggled that auto bike lights in the app. Its a bit fiddly but in the end - it worked so have some patience and perhaps a bit of luck.
I can switch on the radar at the start of the journey and switch it off at the end, but I cannot ride with the radar without light mode. I would like to use the radar without light on the Varia but see the bars with the messages on the Wahoo display.

Looks a bit slicker than Garmin really well done to Wahoo. Nice video as well. Wish Garmin would release a new headlight as my battery is getting on a bit. In addition, revive their Virb range.
What a great update. For me the only thing is that I would love to set separate day and night lighting behaviors. Otherwise I'm very happy with the new light features.

@@DeLFeTube good question. I think once you memorize your menus it is really just a quick glance down at the headset. But to your point I use the shokz open pro and you can hear around you. I only listen on greenways. On the road, no music. Ride on!
Don't know if you reviewed this in a prior video but my Wahoo Bolt V2 now has the ability to turn off my Garmin Varia RTL515 light from the devices settings on the unit. The radar is still in effect but you can control the light mode you desire as well as turn it off completely until a detected object is near. You can then select how long you want the light to remain on after a detection. Nice feature if battery life is a priority.

Great news. Good job on that, Wahoo team. Gave up on waiting for lights controls, nice surprise. I’d be great to have Apple Watch integration for HR / music / messages and calls not to carry a phone and an HR strap.

OH MY GOD!!!! Varia radar control and running the radar while light off is all I ever wanted! Thank you so much GPLama for the demonstration!! Quick question though: Does the radar also operate while light turned off and without flashing when a car approaches? So basically without any lighting whatsoever only showing approaching vehicles on the wahoo display?

@@VolodyaSenkiv I've tested in myself in the meantime and it does work. One simply has to set the "auto light" to "off" if you want radar but without any reaction of the light.
that doesn't work at all! I can't use the radar with the Wahoo WITHOUT light. A light mode must always be on.
The Auto light on " Disable" causes the continuous light. This is also in the description
The lights control (on at the beginning of the ride and off at the end) works but the radar does not work like with Garmin while riding without lights.

wow, that Varia light control is better than Garmin’s implementation! I ride with the light off/radar on a lot on trails, and it was the main reason I chose Garmin over Wahoo. However, this new feature that only turns on the light when an object is detected is perfect. I would love to see Garmin add this feature
This can be done on an EDGE unit using the ConnectIQ addon called Smart Bike Lights (I believe.... it could be called something else...)
Would love to see wahoo update there app to include more statistic about past rides. Right now you can only see per week and total distance. What about per year distance etc.
Thanks, Shane. Super useful. I don't seem to be able to control the Garmin Variables RC715 light using the roam v2 unit. Do you have to pair the garmin to the element twice -- once as a radar and once as a light? It only shows asa radar on my device. I'm missing something here. thx

Normally wait a while when an update comes out to make sure its not buggy, but I've definitely not waited this time. Just updated both the app and the Wahoo (Roam 2) but not seeing the music page or settings yet.
And now its there! Brilliant stuff.
It shows when you start playing some music on your phone as the last page. Theres no need to configure something.

HUGE!!! I wonder, what affect these features will have on battery life? I hope the next version of Wahoo computers have solar charging capabilities.
The Light Support for the radar I will be using the most. Sometimes I wasn't sure if my radar is on night mode or day flashing mode.
What am I missing? The radar part doesn't turn off when you end your ride, so you still have to mess with the buttons on the Varia unit at the start and stop of each ride, unless you want your battery to drain. What is the point?
Hi Shane. It works well for the rtl 515, but not with the rtc715. If you turn off lights the radar goes off too. Did you try it with the rct 715? I m i doing someting whrong? Thanks for your videos.
The 8 Hours and 51 Minutes on the GoPro screen is the space available on the SD-card in the camera 😊
Still no option to switch out the dedicated "Lap" button though? I have never used that my entire life, i would much rather be able to change that to a "Page back" button so i don't have to cycle through 8 pages to get back to page 1 from page 2, maybe i am just stupid and have missed the "page back" feature? :D

Love the video as always but so disappointed that I had my hopes up and was misled. I have the Roam v1 and although the video says that the media control works for all Elemnts it doesn't seem to be accurate. Does not include v1. I'll get over it but it should be clarified. Thanks again for your great videos!
Unfortunately Wahoo rolled out that support to the older units I had in testing and only clarified media control would NOT be part of the public release on these after this video was published.
More reasons to upgrade by Roam v1 to a v2 I think!
Works perfect with my Bontrager RT lights. Does auto turn on also work with Varia 315 radar when pressing the start button to start a ride?

Thanks for bringing this to our attention Shane. I updated my devices (RTL515 and Bolt 2) hoping to try the ant+ light feature. I found I still am not able to change the light settings from the Bolt 2. I see the field in the computer, but when I press to change the light mode for the radar, nothing changed. Have you heard anything that might cause this issue?
You’ll need to re-pair the 515 when it’s in pairing mode. 2-3 second press when powering it on.

You’ll have to check the Rival firmware changelog.
RIVAL already has music control. Currently it does not support light control or GoPro control.
No music control on my Bolt V2. I've got my See.Sense Ace light working with it. So the app and device firmware are up to date, and the light part has worked nicely, but I'm not seeing the option to enable the music control in the Pages menu on the app. That's with the latest Android app version and device firmware.
I have a Bolt V2, paired with RCT715. The light controls doesn't seem to work on the V2. I'm not able to toggle the light variations on the 715. Similarly, I tried it on my magene L508. I faced the same issue as the 715. Am i missing a step here in the set up?
So at 2:58 you are able to switch all the lights on when you start the ride but surely you’re pressing the power button anyway to switch them on to get them to pair to the unit?
I was really hoping you’d say there was integration with Xert in the 3rd party apps 😩….hopefully one day in the future that will happen.
This is great and all but howabout getting the basics right, like updating OSM-sourced maps more than twice in the entire units lifetimes, or having hours to sunrise/sunset/daylight left on your Roam model.

I appreciate all this features, seriously that's sounds great and I like my wahoo computer but I've got a simple problem and wahoo cannot find any solution... Let me explain, I pair my tickr and I put it on me, the bpm are correctly on the screen. I turn off the computer and I take it the next day for a ride, I put my tickr on me and turn on my computer : no bpm... The lights on the tickr flashing but nothing on the computer. On the menu, tickr appear with a green dot but no bpm on my riding screen. I forget and pair it again, and it works.... It's annoying. I will appreciate any help because I feel desperate. Thank you Shane and the community.
now, if only Garmin would get onboard with GoPro control.....
Shane, do you think its worth upgrading from a V1 Bolt to a V2 Bolt today? I am wondering if I should just wait for a V3. My V1 works just fine, I just would like some of these features.

They’re ANT+ Lights, so they pair as sensors with the new firmware on the ROAM v2 and BOLT v2.
sad we didnt get it on the bolt 1, i havent upgraded cause i was the few who bought the bolt just couple months before the bolt 2 was released
Have i misunderstood? I thought that Wahoo made a virtue of all software updates being the same across all versions of a unit type. Is this the fork in the road?

Hmmm... I only have the Varia Radar, so no menu item in the app to turn on/off at the start of the ride. However, if the Bike Lights selection on the Roam V2 is set to OFF the radar will initiate the last radar configuration and turn on the light at the start of a ride.. A problem.....when the ride is stopped it does turn off the light but the radar unit still on. It looks like it turned the radar off but it didn't, it just turned off the light. This could result in the worst scenario: the battery is depleted when you think the unit is off. I would prefer that a "turn radar off/on" message is sent if there is such a message available.
Is there going to be a garmin edge 140? Small form factor with multiband gps. I see visma use the 130 plus for climbing stages. So there is definitely a usecase for it 🤔
That would be an easy release for Garmin this year. Minor software updates and put a USB-C port on it, call it done.... or call it the 140. :)
Rumours say april. But if it doesn't have multiband. I don't see the reason 😅

Great update, but again, the new stuff doesn't work for me :( Changing light mode in the menu for my varia does nothing. Its the german rtl516 variant, so it only has the peloton and light off modes. Do you know if wahoo tested this variant and it is supposed to work?
Same, have the RTL510, none of the new light features work.
Please try unpairing and repairing your RTL516, in our Beta testing this resolved it for one of our users of the 516 variant. If this still does not work, please shoot a note to our Customer Service team. If they can not help you sort this out, they will get the details we need in engineering to sort this out. Thank you!

@@andrewemrick-32196 I have the Varia RTL515 and cannot ride without light mode. I can only switch on the Varia at the start of the journey and switch it off automatically at the end. However, I cannot switch off the light while riding. As soon as the light in the Varia goes out, the message appears in the display ( Radar disconnected) and the radar bars in the Wahoo display disappear.

Will there ever be support for a proper brake light function, meaning the rear light brightness increases when you start squeezing the brake lever, just like in cars? I know Wahoo themselves cannot do it without Shimano/Sram/... adding this to brake levers, but I'd love to have such a feature, eventually. (I know there are "solutions" based on detecting deceleration, but in my experience, they never work properly.)
Wouldn't be too hard to do i think. Electronic shifters are already fully wireless and can communicate with bike computers. So Shimano or Sram would just need to add a switch or a pressure sensor and the ability to connect a rear light. Give it one more generation, probably it will be first seen on shimano steps or so.
@@dakalla Yeah, that was my thinking too. Although I am not sure if I'd prefer the indirect connection through the bike computer - no particular reason, just to keep everything centralised. There is a question of shifters battery life impact with this, though (I'm a roadie with 105di2, which hasn't shifters hooked into the main di2 battery, hence my (slight) concern).
I got an update today for my ELEMNT Bolt. It still is not pairing with my GoPro. Any idea when it will be available for the masses?

Auto Control Bike Lights toggle didn’t appear in app (IOS). All other functionality works (Bolt V2).
Will light control work with the Garmin Varia front light on the Roam V2? Currently have a Garmin UT800 sitting in a box of unused gadgets and it'd be great to use it with the Wahoo.
Not a device I have to test. If it's an ANT+ Light then it should work.
@@gplama Just tested it. Turns on / off with starting / ending an activity and light modes toggle from the sensor page. All good with that, all it needs now is an auto function to go from Flash to Solid based on the daylight sensor of the headunit.
