He was the most amazing guy I have met in my entire life, able to do so many jobs. He was burned in a farm in Tarbaca 🇨🇷 and moved on performing awesome jobs, bus driver, painter, etc, created a company in times when there were no facilities in this country. Awesome person. • My Dad for most of his adult life was a farmer, then a storeman /manager in a "stock and station" company in NZ. He could turn his hand tomost things (but like me, welding wasn't one of them). He would have been totally confounded by the internet on one hand, but on the other. like a child in a sweet shop told they could gorge themselve, totally entralled by the plethora of "knowledge & learning available". In all honesty, I'm not sure how he'd have react to Martijin as he came from a tradition that built entirely in timber (he actually built a "woolshed on the farm with his father-in-law), but he wasn't so insular as not to respect those who had skills he lacked (actually, his "dream" was to be a mechanic on heavy equipment... though he lacked any aptitude for mechanics 😅). 45 years on I still miss the old bugger (speaking in Antipodean)

The reason is that birch skin is watertight and if left as is the wood will rot. Thank you for sharing your life in the mountains.

We watched the first two parts then and finished watching the last two parts yesterday. It was amazing and very frightening. Geppo and Agata shone advising and working and eating, and when they left the birch trees immediately shone brighter in the twilight. It's a real thrill to see the old flooring upcycled as window frames. The glass door downstairs is brilliant, you really needed that. Their bringing the lunch was fab, and the dog is absolutely mythical on a grey day. So peaceful, sweet and yet alert. A toast to all. What a perfect aesthetic touch using the copper pipe for your stove, just gorgeous. I find your method to chop wood ingenious! This is 2nd time I’ve seen you do it and I got a smile again. Works every time. ;)

  • Martijn your an artist with a brush, with a saw, with a hammer, with mediums of all types. I so enjoy watching and though I lost my dad in 2015 he joins me I can feel him watching also. There is such great pleasure I know for you seeing it come to life with your hands. Yes soon we will all be bathed in the midst of winter and the warmth of the fires from your new fireplace will be amazing. I can almost see and smell the bread in the upper chamber when your culinary skills bring forth yet more of your many talents. Thanks so much Martijn for sharing your journey a beautiful one it is. • If you cut wood for fires; cut when the sap is down in the tree.. mid winter? Birch you can burn unseasoned, straight away. 2 weeks to 3 months seasoning at the most. Birch tends to be vulnerable to beetle so there is no advantage in storing it for 12 months. Thanks for the vlog, as always, a Joy!

  • @10:04 Depending on the length of your logs, get one or two old car tiers, place it on the ground, preferably a stone platform. Fill it up with wood and start chopping. The tier/s will bundle wood together and hold it in upright position, allowing you to chop it to the finest splits. When chopping logs directly on the ground, (soft suffuse) a significant part of the energy in each strike is transferred directly to the ground, making chopping more laborious.

    • @@andymccabe6712 Andy think about it for just a second. It is a lot more fuss to try and strap a bunch of logs than it is to just fit them into an old tire to accomplish the same thing. And secondly you will eventually hack up the straps. The old tire is easier, more efficient, and just way better. Just my $.02.

  • Dear Martijn, you make our Sunday so enjoyable. I can't wait to see your house get complete and ready & cozy for your very cold snowy Winter. Also, I think you need to buy some big clear plastic boxes for storing lots of healthy dry, nutritiones food for this Winter. I remember when I was little at night time, me and my brothers and sister loved to hear the story over and over from my mother and that story was about very happy family who lived on top of the hill so green and beautiful and they provided every things themselves, dairy food, eggs, meat, ........ we all loved to hear that story every night and asked my mom to say it again then we could sleep. Take care

Geppo is a true artist and craftsman in his own field. There's inspiration and renewal in these visits to Martijn's world. And lessons for all of us in this world of chaos. Martijn, take care in the lifting of those rock slabs.

  • Thanks again for letting us know what's happening on your mountain in Italy. Once again I'm so envious of your unending supply of free flat stones....and in admiration for your unerring attention to detail in the building of the steps. How wonderful to have your highly skilled window craftsman not only bring the windows, but a meal as well! The noise as the big pane of glass slid into the frame was like a clarion call to announce the final weather tight phase of the cabin!. And the shot of Geppo, centered in a big wall of stone, fitting the tiny window, somehow made me think of a church. Also, I heard you say you missed going to good bookstores. You may already know of it, but there's a wonderful little book called The Poetics of Space, by Gaston Bachelard, in which he talks about the meaning of all the spaces, large and small, in our houses. I think you'd like it. Have a good week, Martijn.
