If this movie wasn't a kids movie and followed through with the comics, this scene would've been a bloody massacre.
This film isn't that kid friendly but I see what you're saying, in the early days of production they were going to make it like the comics but many drafts were made and lost the meaning behind the comics, they always steered way too dark and didn't have the dark sense of humor. Heck one of the ideas went too far off from its source material, it goes like this... it was about a mask maker that made masks from the faces of deceased bodies and would later kidnap unsuspecting teenagers and place said mask on their faces, turning them into the living dead. Now that sounded awful and had nothing to do with the awesome comics. Well long story short, Chuck Russell (director of The Mask) decided the film to be a comedy that still respects the source material.

I love that there's the one moment where Stanley is lucid within the Mask's influence and considers doing genuine good, but immediately gets sidetracked by the rush of petty revenge.
Ah yes in the movie is petty revenge, but the comic, oof, lets just say those mechanics didnt have a pleasant death
Based on the comics it could have been worse. I like to think Stanley's in this is just a nice guy and boring whom is incapable of giving the mask the slightest idea of evil instead just lower crime or petty revenge at best.
@@four7685 Based on the comics it is almost inevitably worse, especially with Stanley Ipkiss. A couple people considered superheroics, though. I guess this Loki-mask is less bloodthirsty or Stanely's just stronger than he seems.

I Can clearly remember sitting in the movie theater on 1994, watching this best blockbuster with our favourite comedian of the decade, Jim Carrey. The effects were groundbreaking. The behind the scenes that were aired on TV as a part of the PR were so inviting, combining 3D animation with real footage, technological advancements and all in a new and exciting story. Simply the best 2 hours of my year.

Have you seen "The Majestic"? That actually shows how great he is as an actor. He was absolutely believable and if you know about "McCarthyism", you will understand the film. Just don't expect it to be a comedy.

Well... Stanley killed a gang. But the scene with the balloons and tommy gun were adapted from the Kellaway arc.

It’s amazing how this movies works when you’re a kid and as an adult. You didn’t realize how much adult jokes were in this movie. The joke with the condom was unscripted which makes it funnier.

I think the great thing about The Mask is that there's no CGI. That's just Jim Carrey being Jim Carrey. What talent!
In the original script (and the comic book) this scene was even more satisfying, because the thug who asks the Mask for "the time" had actually asked Stanley Ipkiss the same question earlier in the story before mugging him and stealing his watch. I guess that part was viewed as too dark for the film, and omitted. Along with most of the violent parts in the comic
