The phone is dead. And it’s ringing.
Director Scott Derrickson returns to his terror roots and partners again with the foremost brand in the genre, Blumhouse, with a new horror thriller.
Finney Shaw, a shy but clever 13-year-old boy, is abducted by a sadistic killer and trapped in a soundproof basement where screaming is of little use. When a disconnected phone on the wall begins to ring, Finney discovers that he can hear the voices of the killer’s previous victims. And they are dead set on making sure that what happened to them doesn’t happen to Finney.
Starring four-time Oscar® nominee Ethan Hawke in the most terrifying role of his career and introducing Mason Thames in his first ever film role, The Black Phone is produced, directed, and co-written by Scott Derrickson, the writer-director of Sinister, The Exorcism of Emily Rose and Marvel’s Doctor Strange.
The film’s screenplay is by Derrickson & C. Robert Cargill (Doctor Strange, Sinister franchise), based on the award-winning short story by Joe Hill from his New York Times bestseller 20th Century Ghosts. The film is produced by Derrickson & Cargill’s Crooked Highway and presented by Universal and Blumhouse. Jason Blum, Scott Derrickson and C. Robert Cargill are producers on the film, which is executive produced by Ryan Turek and Christopher H. Warner.

    • @@boomdoo123 not really...it tells what it needs to without giving away important plot points. Hawks is rarely shown as well. From anyone who’s read the short story you already know Finney gets kidnapped, there’s ‘ghost’ victims and the grabber is the antagonist.

    • So far people who saw it debut at a film festival in September say it’s pretty damn good. It’s by the exact same guys who made Sinister (Scott Derrickson and C. Robert Cargill, also Ethan Hawke plays in both) which is one of the best horrors of the last 20 years imo.

    • @@skyofthelivingdead yeah this fact is what makes me interested. I love thrillers but most are predictable. Sinister was such a new concept, well old concept, definitely a new twist to it though. Haven’t been interested in going to the cinema in years but this I’d venture out for.

  • What I got from the trailer: The phone is a connection for finney to the spirits. The young girl begs god to help her help the police . As a result she gets visions/dreams that give her clues on occurrences/ victims/ and the location of the killer. I.e black balloons, the gate, the twisted dead tree. The ghosts of the deceased children help the killers latest victim escape with their collective knowledge as they all died alone and couldn't teach the other what they learned, so they instead help finney. The ONLY thing the trailer didn't give us was the killers back story. Which I'm assuming is trauma. What a spoiler.

  • This was THE best thriller Ive seen in ages. Normally Im in it for the gore and monsters, but this was just awesome writing. The characters, the lead up, the main part where all top notch and had such a satisfying ending. TOTALLY recommend.

    • @@adampena8815 One of two scenarios: A) Happy ending (least likely based on Derrickson’s past works, but still most likely based on the literature) where Finney will escape and the killer is caught/killed before he follows through with his M/O Or B) Finney dies, the bad guy escapes the police, and the abducted kid helps the next victim while the little girl continues to have visions; or subsequently will be the next kid stolen and another child will carry out the link. I suppose there’s another less likely possibility - quite a reach, which is why I didn’t include it - where Wyatt was going to be set up to take the fall for the murders and honestly, I still think that is what might happen at the end. The whole situation would look really shady as an outsider. This ending would sorta be an ‘alternative bad-ending.’ However, For those who don’t know this is based off a short story by Joe Hill, Stephen Kings son, who is a great writer himself. The short story is in the collection _20th Century Ghosts_ which is excellent and I’d heartily recommend as October reading. The opener story in there “Best New Horror” is legitimately one of the scariest things I’ve ever read. Nonetheless, I’d bet Derrickson doesn’t stray too far from the source material…

    • If you want to watch a good horror trailer then I reccomend 'men' by A24. Its a fantastic trailer that gives close to nothing away and in return makes the watcher want to see the movie to be able to tell wtf is going on, it's brilliant :)

  • Loved this movie. I never really understood what the "He doesn't really take kids that say it" was all about though. Like I think I zoned out during the movie -_- Edit: When the person says "one of our students is missing" I keep hearing "Finney Blake" but his name is Finney Shaw. I'm so confused-
