  • Whoever says this film is boring or not good does not understand true horror. Jump scares are not horror.

    • True. It was not that "scary" traditionally. But I find myself on the edge of my seat, sweating and my face was fucking blank the whole time. It builds tension like no other movie I have ever seen before.

    • @@bomapdich i think it's exactly what horror should be. some jump scares are done in a way that it contributes to the horror, but recently a lot of movies are dependent on those alone to produce the horror. this movie really gets under your skin and leaves your mind dark for a few days

While in a way it definitely is a horror, it's so much more, as even Toni said in Now This News interview. Also, her performance in this was just amazing, it was pure art. • Tori should have received an Oscar for the absolutely remarkable performance she gave us the films a jaw dropper! This was some of the finest art work I’ve ever seen in acting. My mom was crazy growing up as a child the similarities between them was actually quite terrifying . It’s a shame Oscar’s are only given to biopics & films of war . Acting is acting shouldn’t matter what role you’re playing. Hollywood needs an enema. To over look such a brilliant performance & amazingly well done film simply because it falls under the horror category is just ludicrous imo.

  • What makes this movie so unnerving is the fact that it's not really about the literal horror you're seeing, there's an underlying metaphor for how your family effects your life, only it's portrayed like pure terror; which is exactly what a lot of people feel when it comes to their family

The imagery of Annie on the walls and the apperance of the smiling cult members HAUNTS me. Like those moments are utterly terrifying but they appear completely calmly and there is no music to hammer home the fact that you should be scared. Funny how when something is scary and clever enough in itself, we don't need to be told how to react to it. Love when horror is like this.

The eerie, dreadful, uneasiness, and depressing depictions throughout the whole movie was something I havent seen in a LONG time. Not one point of the movie was there any sense of happiness. Nothing but guilt. Scenes were disturbing: from the sounds in the backround to the strange movements of the characters. Not only that, the reactions of each character to their inexplicable and terrifying environment was so realistic. For example, the still shot of Peter sitting in his car after the accident, too tramautized to move, was incredible. The slow pans, the still and silent shots, the amazing cinematography of this film was perfect and captured the moments in the best way. 10/10.

I think hereditary is one of the most unsettling Hollywood horror films I have ever seen. People are like, “It was slow, it bored me.” Well, I wasn't bored for a single second of this movie. It was over filled with interesting elements. Films like the babadook and the witch are also looked down upon because it “bored” people. Well, if all you want is cheap jumpscares and blood, it's gonna get you bored. By the end of the movie, it got so intense I wanted to do something, like I felt like I had to do something, I felt disturbed.

And yet, there's still subtle bits of foreshadowing, like how they keep cutting to the nuts being chopped up, and a couple of times when they cut to that fateful scene on the highway.

    • Yea. A24 is based in NYC. In addition to launching past Oscar winners Ex Machina, Moolight and Room, 2017 is the year they killed it: from the well known (Disaster Artist and Lady Bird) to even better (imho) films such as Good Time, Killing of a Sacred Deer, The Florida Project. So many other awesome nuggets too - like Villenueve’s Enemy.

Having talent consistently deliver the scene, each take and keeping the "Creep" factor up. Nothing quite like it. Then the scene hits you, often out of context or disconnected. Makes you excited to watch the finished product. This one Made Sundance.

I was terrified to rewatch it, but I had to expose my friends/family because it’s a masterpiece. I’m in love with off-beat, disturbing horror that is well-acted and shot beautifully. Nothing I’ve ever seen compares to this film. And then for Aster to follow it up with Midsommar, which had me ALMOST as obsessed. Please please recommend me horror films on this level if they exist.
