At 1010 the stuck ring is a problem but don't worry about the end gap location. The rings will rotate around in use and where they start out or end up really makes no difference.
Was aways taught to cover up the camshaft in the block with tape, to stop anything falling in on a Detroit, one my work colleagues was unlucky to get a nut drop in their and when engine started the cam lobe pushed it through the block into the water jacket, required a new block. Expensive mistake.
Following this rebuild and the amount of neglect and mis maintenance these engines appear to tolerate is amazing.
Remarkable how good the main and rod bearings and bearing journals look. Especially when you consider what this engine has been subjected to. Even the cylinder liners are not as bad as some you have encountered. I believe what you say about the block cleaning. It's needed but I know you can handle it. Not a cheap overhaul but it could have been so much worse.
Thanks for the update Scott. Great video on this bus really enjoy watching you troubleshoot and fix this bus.
The older Iron was built to last and was serviceable with knowledgeable technicians. Notice the lack of a "Computer" to help with all the work! Thanks Scott, as an old guy I appreciate these detailed videos.
When it comes down to weather. In the city roof is one meter apart bolts in to timber. But where I live one inch apart . Storms get bad where I live. 50ml of ran with in a hour. All floods. Thank you for all the engine details are great. God bless. Mick Australia 🇦🇺
Surprised the internals look that good . Being an air cooled engine for a while . I would have expected more damage . U are gettin the storms that blew through AZ deserts ,been damn cold here .
That’s a good point. Poor old Detroit was living life like an old Deutz for a while lol
Looking way better than expected for sure
I’m glad it’s stout and you’ll have confidence and comfort in knowing you are not at risk, ordinarily.
Wish I could have seen all ur other videos that I couldn't download but awesome video
You've mentioned the wind at your place before. Being up top of Dyno Hill has its ups and downs. See what I did there? 😂 Sounds like a good plan on the rebuild.
You are relatively new to Tennessee, but I have lived here for over 30 years and I have seen wind storms that will make you cringe! I have seen a micro burst come through and snap three trees in my woods 20' up the trunks of 100' trees. I have had two 100' white oak trees come across my drive at 9:00 at night and had to cut these out of the drive until 11:00 at night with no power. One time around Madisonville, we had a huge oak tree fly across highway 411 during a tornado right in front of us. I do love the storms though. One reason I moved back from south Florida LOL!
That was cleaner and less rust than I thought it was going to be. Got lucky.
Gotta love❤ duh BG🐒Floss 😊 thanks for sharing, love what you do ☮️
Crazy Scott...we didn't get much of that in Nashville today.
Yep. Just as amazed as you on those bearing shells. Was expecting to see some sign of the water ingress. The liner you pulled out . The o rings looked in fair condition. I was hoping to see a rust line over it to show where the coolant was passing down. Especially the way it was dripping out so much....or have you found somewhere else it was dropping from.
Wow not too bad for the water and rust on top of the piston, it will be interesting to see whats up with the other 7! I was driving a rural road in south eastern Oklahoma and saw a storage with 5 of these old greyhounds parked around, they even had a couple under cover!! Most looked like they were awaiting a trip to see the Bus Grease Monkey!!
I absolutely agree after growing up in a family business that had a fleet of heavy trucks. That 7000$ pay for the rebuild kit. Saving the coach. Awesome
Yep, we’re catching it here in North/Central Texas. Winds. Cold. Due for snow/sleet mix on Sunday/Monday. My soon to be 69 year old bones hates the cold these days
Awesome engine!
Fleetguard Restore. It’s fantastic for cleaning the cooling system.
great job love the vids and its looking great good job i agree with yah its a inframe rebuild not easy but doable huggs from jacob in arkansas usa
I agree with you with reference to cleaning the block ,it would seem a waste of money when you can clean it very well insitue
keep the clips coming
Ill bet you were holding your breath that no trees blew over on your new shelter. We have been having sustained wind here for the last 4 days also, but no snow. That Wonderlodge should be fine for a long time when you get done with it.
Never once was concerned with a tree hitting it. Just worried it would go sailing like a Christopher Cross song.
Thanks for the update. I’m enjoying seeing each of the videos on this bus!
i am surprised the block is not that bad, as long as you don't find a crank problem that is a in-frame all day. from the looks of the airbox and the turbo i would pull the blower to check it as i am betting it is dusted.
That was one big gust of wind the trees bent over 😮
Contaminated soil is so much fun to clean up after you leave!
Scott your new bus hut is very well designed! Obviously much more stable than you might expect! Another win! Congrats!
I'm not too fond of stop leak. it is a temporary fix that costs more in the long run.
I’m not against it depending on the situation. It’s certainly not a continuous solution to a problem
Scott, are you going to pressure test the radiator when you get it back together?
Do those Detroits in the bus applications have a coolant filter/conditioner to help with prevent cavitation? I distinctly remember dad being very picky with any N14 or Big Cam 3 or 4 with testing DCA levels and changing Fleetguard WF2071 filter , then around 2000 International at least started factory filling with red Delo ELC which was less maintenance for sure. I can’t believe they ran so much water through it and let it run low , that sight glass wouid have fooled me lol. what a mess. Lucky to have you guys ! 👍
92 series the coolant is very important because of cavitation. 71 series dry liner’s don’t matter.
31 here in FL.
Ive never seen this concept but i always imagine it must be possible and simple and hopefully available relatively easily ? aaaaand it iiiiiss.... : Flexible cleaning brushes that can be pushed through engine water passages. Like a pipe cleaner / bottle brush. Something strong that can be pushed with a lot of force. Something small enough to be pushed through radiator slits instead of using a smooth plastic zip tie ( ziptie probably only removes large blockages but still leaves a coating on the surface ). Maybe im over thinking, and the right chemical cleaner will do a near perfect or perfect job ?
I think they do flush the passages again after clearing the chunks. I remember they did with the clogged-up radiator that was in a much earlier video. But you're right, a bottle brush-like apparatus does work well for cleaning tight spaces, in my experience.
I was surprised the bottom of the engine was much better than the top. I'm wondering if it is a standard bore and someone did a really bad rebuild before.
You DO NOT have to pull the block. Detroits are super sensitive to maintaining the PH balance in the coolant...once you get it back together the proper coolant will clear all that mess.
Классное видео получилось! Мне понравилось! Круто Круто!!!👍👍👍
When u do an in frame rebuild do u inspect both ends of the connecting rod or send them to machine shop to be measured / inspected ??? . The example of the contact patch b/end bearing to rod cap looks pitted or fatigued . Bearing wear had a poor pattern as well . I am sure u would have the rods resized and inspected eg crack, alignment test etc
When you work on old, tired and worn out engines things need closer attention. This is a baby as most wanderlodges are mileage wise. No wear parts are worn out. No signs of issues to be concerned with on the bottom end.
The shelter is a good idea. Not sure if it would work where I live.......average snowfall is 200 inches per year. I have several large vehicles that need to be covered.
20+ inches of snow dropped in Iowa.
Its the polar vortex moving in
Is there any Detroit Diesel service tools that you do not currently have that you would like to acquire?
What was the marking in the centre of the big end cap caused by? Looks almost like there was no contact with the crank in that area. Never seen anything like that, but i only have petrol engine experience! Carbon build up between rings looks (to me) like the top ring has been sticking as well and the second ring has stuck because of it. Ring gaps so close wouldn’t help of course. Phil, UK
That's a stain from coolant in the oil . Being old coolant it was probably acidic too. Oh strips can be bought from larger automotive parts suppliers to test the coolant .
The connecting rod has an oil delivery hole under the bearing. That circle is an outline of that hole under the bearing.
Sorry, it was the rod, not the cap, i meant the dark granular staining around the hole mark, as though there had been poor contact between the shell and the crank, thanks for another excellent rebuild video! Very interesting! Phil UK
I have some takeaways from the footage of the wind. Were building up on the mountain and I told the company I want to do a walk out basement. They said we don't get high winds or tornadoes in the mountains. Uhhhhh.... Yeah ok. Let's do the basement anyway.
Your weather could be worse, I'm stuck in Green Bay for my weekly reset, officially had 13.5 inches of snow with high winds. Have to walk to find food as the delivery services quit Friday morning due to the terrible road conditions..........
Man i would stock up on cheese curds and could live off them for probably a week before i got tired of them ;) good luck sand stay warm
Perth 🇦🇺 41°C 😏
😊
Someone got lucky. The deck was in fine shape I guess.
How Hard is it to remove the complete engine out to do this rebuild!
It’s not hard but very time consuming both in and out double up the labor man hours for double the cost in the end. $15,000-$20,000 or $30,000-$40,000 out of frame.
Does anybody have a silver side sliding windows
How much does a full rebuilt cost on this engine?
It’s a lot especially when you consider everything being done. Cooling system overhaul, all the extra bits needing attention and broken and rusted hardware. 40 year old neglected parts alone are possibly in the 10k range. luckily we saved him about 5k on the radiator. 20-25k looking like estimate range but you never know what’s behind the next bolt. We are just about to the reassembly stage which is on the upside. About 10k right now but waiting on the machine shop results for the heads. Heads alone could be another 5k hit to the budget. Buses are not cheap. Taking care of them is super important. Don’t over heat them and use smart maintenance policies. And when buying one get an inspection!!! Oil sample analysis could have avoided buying an engine with similar issues.
@@BusGreaseMonkey Thank you. I appreciate your time.
The stuck rings are from 15/40W too much sulfated ash
Engine in a box time Well half of it as it could of been way worse
8:00 Internet rando: "You gotta do it right, exactly right, by the book! Everyone else (Especially Scott): "Are you gonna pay for it? No? Then SHUT THE FACE UP!"
$7000.. the juice aint worth the squeeze
Your landlord will not like that nor anything in your junkyard.
I am the landlord or shall i say land owner.
