Strobe warning the slow motion clips have a slight flickering led light strobe effect.
Fighting the thermostat housing disassembly. Crack found in the detroit diesel 8v92TA head
That was a great slow motion of the bolt being removed.
Except for the migraine inducing flicker of the lighting 😢

She really got BBQed! That Grey scorched oil in the heads tells the whole story. Be great to have a little of that heat in the shop now. Stay warm fellers.
The slow motion was epic! However I could NEVER show it to my wife. The flickering could cause her to have seizures.
You must be the first person I have heard in KZhead land who has actually talked about checking liner protrusion on a wet sleeve engine ! Bravo Sir ! I cannot believe so many do not.
Wet sleeve, dry sleeve, liner height is equally important.
Question: V91 liner protrusion. The outer rim of the liner is recessed and the liner has a higher ridge. Where is liner protrusion measured? From the tallest part of the liner on the recess adjacent to the deck?
Wes at 'Watch Wes Work' uses a shock technique where he heats things up, then squirts cold water on the bolt head. Jon at 'FarmCraft 101' tried it after watching Wes' video. Both worked amazingly well.

Scott, in all the Detroit heads I’ve seen over the years I’ve yet to see one that had that extent of lack of liner protrusion damage without cracking the head deck.

Just curious. Do you ever have to do a cam and follower replacement. I've never seen that on any of your in frame rebuilds.

There's a channel Josh's Engine Rehab. The guy has gotten broken screws out by welding up a little figure of a man. I'm sure you can find it in the still shots he has on his channel. I forget which video he made it on, but after it's done, it came out without trouble.
That was the rustiest crustiest thermostat I have ever seen. I am no expert but that head didn’t look very good
Question: do they require you send back the old head?
Looks like they put some super secret texturing on those heads to improve airflow. :D

What point on the liner is protrusion measured since it is not a flat surface?
Slow motion segments were nice, but maybe a warning on the video before they appear about the strobing affect 🤪

try welding a heavy flat washer on the bolt then weld the nut to the washer
That’s what we did
a simple way to clear up some of the flickering in the slow motion, import the clip twice with the second very slightly offset and set both to 50% opacity
The easiest was is just for the viewer to pretend you don’t notice it.
For me there was a seizure risk and couldn't watch it. Had those familiar feelings. Sounded pretty cool though. Most people can just ignore it. @@BusGreaseMonkey
One of these days I'm gonna get my 84 pt40 up there. We live in it full time so it's kinda hard to get it worked on at the same time. 🤷♂️😅

Ive seen guys ( on line) pull the valves and found small cracks down the valve holes i think they used a blue or purple type dye stuff like in machine shop . Which I'm guessing would get bigger when hot / running.. it was on a engine rebuild show. Just babbling i guess I'm a carpenter not a mechanic. But being Raised on the great lakes I'm no stranger to Detroit diesels... the tug i dechhand on had a a V871 i dumped 2 quarts in her every morning that was normal
The machine shop will check them and do the valves. I just look for the obvious ones they magnaflux them and check everything closely.
Does anyone know if the front bumper that is missing will be fixed as well while in the shop?

i don't understand why you don't buy a cheap eddy current machine, you' be able to check for cracks easily.

@@BusGreaseMonkey Yeah, if you were strictly rebuilding engines (like a machine shop), you'd already have it. If Phantom levels up, your only challenge will be getting up the hill. :)

A lot…I would imagine several thousand for both..
Usually around 1K each
