We even had a bone yard of old worn-out power and machine tools that we would use to build custom job specific power and machine tools. It was a third-generation business; lots of old worn-out tools to tinker with.

  • A bigger wrench would do it as the experts point out in comments, but this actually looks very useful for my present problem: getting the nut for the front shock absorber off a strut. Can't use heat, the nut is not of proper shape for a wrench (has some flat surfaces, special tool was meant to be used which i don't have). Definitely going to try this. Might have to weld the chain to the nut.

  • Alternatively, I've been able to remove the movable wrench jaw (unscrew it) and to file another tooth (with a triangular file, say) into the toothed "gear" surface of the jaw to enable the wrench jaw to open further (wider). The jaw becomes a bit weaker then against high torque forces of course when it is open to its new widest extent, but this modification can give you an adjustable wrench that is a little more versatile when it comes to the challenge of larger fasteners -- bigger bolt heads or nuts. I learned this trick over 50 years ago from my dad; everyone I've passed this mod on to since has been surprised they hadn't seen it anywhere else or heard of it before. It's great, because it works, tho' you SHOULD be careful not to use too much muscle on the largest-span stubborn fasteners (and sometimes, it helps to use a few drops of penetrating oil). Good luck! --Joe / Tucson ARIZONA / USA

  • Interesting! The title is misleading because it implies that the hole was intended by the manufacturer for that use. Fabrication of a crescent wrench end into a chain wrench is what actually happened. I as a former mechanic have likewise fabricated tools at times, so kudos to Alva Welding for his creativity. I have used that end of a crescent wrench for increased leverage on a tight bolt by slipping the hole over a jaw of the open end of a combination open end and boxed end wrench. You can also use another wrench to do this by putting the boxed end of it over one of the jaws of the wrench being turned.
