Ive seen people who never get past the white belt. In an actual certified dojo where you are taking lessons from a real sensei, you must pass certain criteria to be awarded your next belt. Further more a belt does not signify ones strength or ability, but rather the accolades one has been gifted. Belts are signs for respect. I have seen many blue and green belts toppled by white belts with better fundamentals. Ofcourse thats not to say having achieved a higher ranking belt is not useful. The higher your achievement, the more techniques you will be taught. In judo most of the highly efficient and effective moves are closed off to black and brown belts, as they are fairly risky to perform for the person receiving. Certain chokes and bars can lead to broken bones, or in some severe outlying cases death.

I was in a tournament years ago as a one week old yellow belt, and I destroyed the two main brown belts to win the tournament. So yes, the belt does not signify ability, but certainly respect and accolade as you put it. Anyway, what I said above still remains, there's no way someone would be doing martial arts for over a decade and still be a white belt. Also, yes I know it's all a joke :)

Ive seen people who never get past the white belt. In an actual certified dojo where you are taking lessons from a real sensei, you must pass certain criteria to be awarded your next belt. Further more a belt does not signify ones strength or ability, but rather the accolades one has been gifted. Belts are signs for respect. I have seen many blue and green belts toppled by white belts with better fundamentals. Ofcourse thats not to say having achieved a higher ranking belt is not useful. The higher your achievement, the more techniques you will be taught. In judo most of the highly efficient and effective moves are closed off to black and brown belts, as they are fairly risky to perform for the person receiving. Certain chokes and bars can lead to broken bones, or in some severe outlying cases death.

@@zukoHD Yes that is very true, the belt usually is there to hold up your pants. Ha ha. I was in a tournament years ago as a one week old yellow belt, and I destroyed the two main brown belts to win the tournament. So yes, the belt does not signify ability, but certainly respect and accolade as you put it. Anyway, what I said above still remains, there's no way someone would be doing martial arts for over a decade and still be a white belt. Also, yes I know it's all a joke :)
