  • The RNLI shows what can be done when the sole purpose of the organization is the provision of life saving services. My cousin is one of their full time fundraisers and I was a member when I lived in the UK. I joined after I called them out one filthy night when I saw a red flare over the Sound of Sleat in a major storm one January night. I watched them heading out from Mallaig and reaching the casualty. Next day I went into Mallaig and saw they had rescued a wooden fishing boat that had stove in some planks cutting too close to the Point of Sleat lighthouse. That was the old Arun class lifeboat, "Davina and Charles Matthew Hunter". And guess who paid for that one.

The narrative is very much focused on the british RNLI and the equipment they use, but there are others out there. The german DGzRS for example with its largest rescue cruiser, the Hermann Marwede or the very new 28m-class.

  • What the video doesn't cover and other commenters have touched on is that the RNLI is a (mostly) volunteer staffed charity that goes out into the seas around the British Isles as a search and rescue service. The north sea isn't a fun place to be when the weather is bad but they will still jump in a lifeboat and go looking for anyone in distress when the call comes in. Kind of like an unpaid coastguard really. One of the few "big name" charities that I'll give money to.

Crew Members had to jump off the side of the ship because they were forward, the lifeboat was on the stern and the fire between them and the lifeboat. Several were severely injured and one died.

    • An airbag doesn't help when your car catches fire as well. Still in most common accidents it will help... The lifeboats on the fremantle highway where not located on the aft, but on the centre satarboard and Portside... Also liferafts where there, but hence the complete ship was on fire in a very (too)short period of time causing the crew not having enough time to disembark...all because people THINK electric cars are better...

    • that's why generally it is considered far better to have many small lifeboats all over the ship then a couple of big ones, most passenger ships actually carry more lifeboat space then they have passengers to always allow for some boats to be unusable or inaccessible. the incident of the Fremantle highway was very different though being a chemical fire didn't allow enough time for an orderly evacuation to take place and as the ship stayed afloat while burning the reserve rafts didn't auto deploy like they would have in a sinking.

At this time, ships boats were all general purpose vessels and didn’t have the interior space needed for the buoyancy that made the land based boats the original “life boats”, able to survive conditions that would swamp and sink a ship’s boat.

To me Life boats are those used only in emergency situations, they must be stationed at particular area of the platform or the ship, regularly inspected for readiness and may not be used for another purpose (except safety drill), it is a dedicated vessel to the platform or a ship. Along with lifeboats there are also liferafts (no engines). The content of the channel shows some (not all) patrol boats, Rescue boats, pilot boat and other multi purpose vessels that can be used for other purposes and are not dedicated to one platform or particular mother ship. I believe, the technical requirements for lifeboats and liferafts are clearly stated in SOLAS manual. • A “lifeboat” is any vessel designed and used expressly to save people in distress at sea. In the UK, shore based lifeboats (RNLI) predate those carried aboard ships. These boats are not “patrol boats” because they only respond to actual emergencies, being crewed by volunteers who have regular jobs. In fact the L in RNLI stands for “lifeboat” and all their craft are land based. So, while the USCG Cutters are not specifically lifeboats because they perform other functions, too, the RNLI vessels were called lifeboats before that name was used for boats carried aboard ships.

  • I would consider quite a few of these as rescue craft or patrol boats instead of life boats. To me, a life boat is something launched from a ship or boat to save lives of crew and passengers after said ship or boat is no loner sea worthy or there is a threat on board such as fire or some other hazzardous situation. I do like that all of them are motorized since escaping a sinking ship is useless if you are stuck drifting with the current possibly dying from dehydration, starvation or exposure long before being found.

Coordination of large numbers? If all maritime trained - some issues but can be managed. If not maritime trained or even to an "awareness level"? That could be a real challenge. If in strong weather too? Need to have some clever, adaptable, coaches for crew assigned to each "soft vessel" (raft). The people skills could be almost more important if not equally important to maritime.

This is like comparing average people with zero medical background and a basic first aid kit at home, and an Emergency Room Doctor. The two are very different "things". Also, Pilot boats are similar aspects in design for Coastguard "Life Boats" but also used in extremely different jobs/roles. They are literally used to transport "pilots" (A senior harbour master/qualified and heavily experienced person to board incoming/outgoing commercial/government vessels. As well... again, you cannot compare Emergency Lifeboats and Emergency Life Rafts in the same video. Yes, same purpose but very different backgrounds and purpose of issuance.

  • I question your definition of a lifeboat. In my mind a lifeboat is an emergency escape/survival craft. Not professionally manned patrol vessels.

    • @@dallasarnold8615 - I did, in fact, read what you wrote. And I happen to disagree with you, in case you hadn't noticed. It is clear that your definition is not universal as the RNLI terminology demonstrates. An astute person might take that as a clue that no single person is the arbiter of the English language. Now, may I suggest you unwind your panties and pull them out of your asscrack, take a deep breath and go have a beer.

    • @@dallasarnold8615 As I replied above to someone else, working in the offshore oil and gas industry the emergency escape craft were officially termed "Totally Enclosed Survival Craft", although we generally just referred to them as lifeboats.

  • As ships get larger, larger LBs will be needed. If they can't be loaded extremely fast and get away from the ship, they'll become part of the tragedy. So, speed of loading vs size / capacity, is an important factor. Get people in-and-away, asap. Also I noticed a max speed of these design is about 25knts. So, 300 off shore will mean 12 hours to rescue. How about a free-fall airplane launched LB?
