Fun Fact: This film was rejected by every major film studio, until a little independent Studio picked it up named New Line Cinema. After this movie became a worldwide hit, New Line grew into the powerhouse that would eventually release the likes of Dumb and Dumber, Rush Hour, The Mask and The Lord of the Rings trilogy. Thank you turtles.
ps. With only a $13million budget (Jim Henson made the suits). It became highest grossing independent movie of the 90's, with over $200 mil

Every time I see the new line logo with the film strip pieces I get excited and hope I'm watching TMNT. Doesn't go away.
I dont care what anyone says, THIS tmnt movie is the way tmnt movies should be made.
Agreed
It was so awesome. I loved it as a kid and still do today. Definitely appeals to kids and adults both.
To me, this movie is what really felt real. The plot story is something I can relate as what happens between the turtle bothers can also happen to us such as fighting between each other. In the end we see that we need each other more than we realize and if we lose it, we take it for granted. That's what made this movie so great.
💯👍🏿✊🏿
Totally. I wore out 2 vhs tapes of this when i was a kid
I think I can confidently say, that we're all in agreement that this is the best TMNT movie and can't be touched

they can do better. but i doubt they ever will. they found good mix comic and cartoons. imo maybe tad to dark.... but that said i watched as a very small kid be 7. and i scared easy. this movie never bothered me. so i dk they may of hit it just right even for the weeklings like me

Way more better than the new one
This movie still holds up after all these years. What the Jim Henson Company did with these costumes was nothing short of magical.

For kids born in the early 80's, this movie was an absolute masterpiece.

Same! It was the 1st VHS I ever had 📼 😊
Same! Unfortunately I lost Turtles 1 at some point, and just was left with Turtles 2 (Secret of the Ooze) so that's the one I can quote faithfully today, even Kino's lines ("Sure sure, I'll 'dream on (dweeb)', but when I do it'll be of something a little thinner!! *speeds away on his motorbike* HAHA!") Turtles 1 tho was the better movie, and I'm kinda glad every blue moon I go back to watch it I kinda forgot how awesome it was the first time I watched it as a kid.
This movie has passed the test of time
Better than cgi
CRAZY, how this still looks better than pretty much every other film...
it's crazy how the stunt actors wore those puppet costumes which weighed about 60lbs and those were the light ones. for the close ups and talking scenes they wore heavier more detailed costumes
only this and 2 were the best of them (this one is #1 in my book)
I'll never understand how, if they CLD make this back then, and, on the budget they had.... it looked worse each n everytime after and was more expensive......I'll b honest...the first film, CLDa and shlda earned and Oscar/academy award for the SFX .....
Can we take a moment to appreciate Casey just casually killing Shredder and saying “oops”
He did survive this.

Something I just noticed about this fight is how there are very few jump cuts. This is something so many modern action flicks suffer from. This fight shines by not only having great set up and characters, but by also being so well shot. Wide angles to show off the combatants and keeping it still on them to establish a rhythm. They only cut when and important maneuver or decisive blow is dealt. Fucking love this movie.
Indeed, the angles used here remind me of those martial arts movies from HK.

Dunno if it's just me, but it looks like that with those sword swings, Leo isn't trying to fight Shredder, he's actually trying to kill him.
All killshots
Yup, they were almost ALL kill swipes. He hit him twice, and one attack was meant to kill him, but got his chest.
This Shredder *literally* comes in like a video game final boss and I love it so much.
That's a great observation. Like, where the hell did he drop down from anyway?
He does, doesn't he? 😂
Dude drops in just like Bowser in Super Mario Bros. 3.
He got spawned a lil about the ground like a video game
As a kid I stood in awe, in my little mind saying hoooooolllllyyyy shit! Run turtles run!
My favorite quote from Jim Henson company. "It's not about if they look realistic. It's about you believing they're there." And I think they nailed that.
That is so very interesting. It's like with what happened with the live action Sonic movie; originally, Sonic looked hyper realistic (aka grotesque and unappealing). Then, after Sonic took to social media to voice their grievances, the studio remade Sonic, thought he looks like a cartoon character in the real world, like that guy you quoted, his actions and interactions with the other characters in the movie felt so real that you could actually feel as though he's really there in the room with them. Hope my comment made sense.
Something I would say about CGI
I was older than I'd like to admit when I realized they weren't real
@@joshjess9841 Jim Henson is the guy who made the muppets FYI
They nailed it 100%. They look so life like once you're watching the movie it's amazing how authentic the entire film is. So dark and gritty at times with a pinch of humor. My only major beef is they showed every aspect and personality of each turtle except Donatello. At least once it should have shown at the very least a grungy looking lab or workshop.
I always loved how chill Shredder was when he was pacing back and forth. He's just like "No rush lads, I've got all night"
A few things I didn't appreciate until many years later: 1:28 Shredder is so in control of the fight that he turns his back as they regroup. 1:54 The effortless dodge by Shredder. I would expect the high roundhouse to be followed by a high or middle roundhouse kick, but instead Donatello goes for a legsweep. Shredder watches every movement, and he dodges the legsweep by raising his front leg. 2:47 Once he stops trying stuff like lunging at the enemy, Leonardo actually holds his own against Shredder for quite some time, and he even manages to injure him. As a kid I thought the Shredder just tossed them all around until Splinter showed up, but now I realize that Leonardo was actually learning how to fight him. 3:10 When push comes to shove, Leo is the one to be blinded with rage and Raph is the one who throws down his weapons first to save his family.
And after Leo hurt him he recognized he was injured and used the baiting tactic to isolate Leo because he knew he could be overwhelmed if he kept fighting them
@@TheMan-je5xqYep that's exactly what that was he even admitted that after taking down leo
@@biged3561 and actually I think he hits him twice, once on the tricep and once across the chest and shoulder but I’m not sure about the second one 2:54

Exactly just good old practical effects something that is really missing in movies today I know it is every comic book movie nowadays has some type of horrible looking CGI now honestly CGI is so overused at this point
@@acewillingham yep. It literally just makes movies look like a video game, and personally I can't even watch them when I see it. Examples of good use of CGI are very very rare (LOTR, Dark Knight, King Kong (2005), where they made it look real. Personally I prefer bad costumes over bad CGI.

The Final Fight is to the point, vengeance, raw power and the choreography is phenomenal. And the music makes it 100× more incredible
U felt that too (pause)
The music is sooo good.
4:22-4:26 The grand reveal. Looking at this purely as a film, that is a well done reveal. It was properly set up with a flashback and hinted at by Splinter himself. This was the payoff. The reaction from Raph sold it. Also, gotta love how Splinter was so calm despite Shredder full-on sprinting at him with that spear. Of course, can’t leave out one of Splinter’s best quotes in the film… “Death comes for us all, Oroku Saki. But something much worse comes for you. For when you die, it will be… without honor.” Good lord this film is a classic.
Just don't make 'em like this anymore. Pure heart. 👌
This movie shows that you can make a movie dark without it having to be absolutely depressing. Mixing fun dialog but with a dark moody atmosphere and not insulting kids intelligence.
Yes unlike the childrens avengers mcu franchise
This movie shows that you can make a dark movie and I can still SEE what the hell is going on!
Agreed. while this movie had some of the comedy from the animated series, it definitely had the dark tone of the comic as well.
Unlike the cartoons, sadly.

Three Things: 1. The fact that Casey can keep up with the Turtles is amazing in itself. 2. Jim Henson's heart was on display in this film. This film reeks of Labyrinth and The Dark Crystal in it's heart and message. 3. The Last Ronin would make for an amazing trilogy of movies!!!
The last Ronin is just so tragic, though. 😢
The human actors are the right age too. Would love to see a legacy sequel that ignores the second and third one.
@lex_rodriguez I guess TMNT 2007 counts but it like, totally undoes Raph's arc from this movie and Leo (despite always being my favorite turtle) is an insufferable hypocrite in there. Mikey and Donnie don't get to do anything (especially during the fights) and the villains just suck, too.
Jim Henson was only there to do the suits, he had nothing to do with the script, directing, etc.
I'm sure Jim Henson had to DIE for this picture. He died in a hospital, literally a month after this movie came out. A perfectly healthy middle-aged genius, suddenly gone. SuspiciousAF.
The part where Leo fights Shredder has been my favorite part since I was a kid. The music, the scene, when he actually was serious, he held his own! I wish it would have been a longer scene!
I wish one of the turtles helped Splinter finished him off
31 years later and the puppets in this movie still look incredible.
Guys in bulky rubber suits did more ninja shit than the new CGI versions, except CGI Splinter.
Splinter looks like actual rat mutant.
They even sweats too...… makes the rubber suit look realistic
Nah. The puppets today look like corpses. Google it.
Now we have CGI that looks fake! No real storyline nothing to follow no storyline nothing!! simple just CGI.

@Garren Turk I actually liked the 3rd TMNT movie where they go in time. Granted, it wasn't as good as the first two but it is far better than any of the Michael Bay TMNT movies.
@@Lunzatis_PalemoonMichael Bay should have been quit directing films after his tmnt
Raph saying “it’s him” after Shredder removes his mask is still chilling to this day.
Brooooo I thought it was jus me. The whole hand push back on Mikey😩
Splinter knew who Shredder the entire time according to his past .
What I love about the choreography here is that it feels epic and authentic. Shredder doesn't move very much because a real fighter with a spear doesn't need to. He is totally in control until he sees Splinter. And the Turtles, being more impulsive and younger are cartwheeling all over. It's also an underrated character beat that Leo is the one to lose his cool and Raph is the one to make the decision to throw away the weapons to keep Leo alive at all costs - something that will lead to their defeat but honours Splinter's teachings. I also love the fact that Casey kicks butt here without stealing the limelight from the Turtles. And finally, Splinter is compassionate, wise AND lethal - it's Shredder's hatred and arrogance that leads to his undoing but Splinter doesn't hesitate to let him do it. Without remorse, pity or anger. Like a master. I just think that people dismissed this movie as just a kid's indulgence but the writer and director took it very seriously, and it has an authentic, mature quality not always found in a movie aimed at kids. Feels more like they aimed at fans of the original comic or at teens.
Agreed on the point about it being more powerful that Leonardo is the one who loses his composure than it being Raphael (and that Raphael who takes on the mantle when Leonardo is incapacitated). It kinda makes me wish they had retained the subplot of Michelangelo going dark (like the shot of him screaming"SPLINTERRRRRR!" from the rooftop of the farmhouse, which was overdubbed with Raphael's voice).
@@horseytown I never realised that was Mikey. Kind of echoes some recent storylines doesn't it?
best rendition of shredder with him not only being an intimidating badass, but also highly charismatic when addressing the foot clan. Also liked how the foot clan was a dark reflection of the turtle's found family which really added to the overall theme of needing purpose and a sense of belonging.
@@kyriss12 It's a very shrewd way of interpretating how this Shredder works as the whole theme of family is intrinsic to the movie. It really is, thats why Danny is there, why Casey calls out the Foot for their belief in family, and the Turtles of course. It's a very good Shredder. The best? Dunno, but he is my favourite. I wasn't against him coming back though but could have done without most of the second movie. Shame the 'fifth' movie never came to fruition, with this version of Shredder returning.
Every one of Leonardo's attacks were potential kill strikes. He was NOT kidding around there in his sequence. It's amazing choreography.

It's crazy what they did with such a small budget. Now, they throw gazillions of dollars into these CGI fests and they still cannot compare to this movie in terms of quality.
I bet most of that 13.5 million dollar budget was spent on the turtle suits as the head of them was doing the facial expressions was done remotely by someone behind the cameras

This movie did something special when it blended the darkness and violence of the original comics with the comedy and light-heartedness of the cartoon. It was the best of both worlds.
As a kid we saw it in the cinema and we were a little disheartened with "how it was different to the cartoon". Little did we know at the time that it was taking details from the comic and adding cartoon details in, effectively future proofing it. When we saw it again years later we realised just how amazing it was with it's accuracy to the source material.
@@LeeONardo - Same experience here, I remember seeing it when I was in middle school at the theater, and it was quite a switch from the cartoon. But man, that was *THE* movie of the summer. It reminded me a lot of the Batman craze of 89.
This movie is on my top ten list of best comic book movie adaptations.
Before I watched this for the first time (I was 8) I actually only knew the 87 cartoon. When I saw this movie I actually PREFERRED the way Turtles were portrayed and it was after that I looked into the comics and from then on I only wanted dark and gritty TMNT as opposed to the kiddified ones.
Funny though that Shredder still lived after being impaled from such a tall height and crushed inside a garbage truck

There'll never make a turtles movie like this again. The first and one and only the best. Turtles II was already a huge departure from the first one. It almost feels like it didn't even come from the same world. Different April, different Donatello....different voice of Raph. Yeah, it just didn't even feel like a sequel to the first movie. Should have just made its own thing.
Very true. In the cartoon show, the Shredder was comically incompetent. But in this movie, he was Hannibal Lecter frightening. Especially the scene when he was searching Danny's pockets and found the drawing of Leonardo. I held my breath the entire time.
Yeah it was a little bit more in tone with the original comics run, those were even a bit more darker.

I was so blessed as a child to be given this masterpiece. Truly iconic film
epic everything... costumes, soundtrack, fighting, dialogue. everything that came after has been less than. still in my top 10 favorite movies of all time
There is really good writing behind this fight. If you watch closely, you'll see the nuance. When Donatello comes in, Shredder's moves are calculated, outsmarting everything one move ahead. Michaelangelo immediately starts flailing about with his chaotic nunchaku. Shredder's moves indicate he knows he has to go on the offensive, as the longer he spends in the fight, the more likely he is to be randomly hit. Raphael comes in too aggressive with the jump kick, and Shredder uses his momentum against him, essentially flipping him with his own kick. Only Leonardo has the training and focus to get a hit on Shredder (2 in fact, but the last is against his shoulder armor). Shredder realized before he got cut (as evidenced by his strained grunting) that Leonardo is skilled enough to go toe to toe with him. When his arm gets cut, he understands he has to change his tempo, exposing his weakness to get a hit on Leonardo. He's essentially used all of their weaknesses as were foreshadowed in the film against them. And of course then realizes if he kills Leonardo he wins the fight. Unfortunately for him, he also has a weakness, and he falls for it as well. It's a bit ironic that the chaotic nunchaku that he so craftily disarmed from the least mature turtle, was used against him in a very wise, calculated manner that was likely reminiscent of that of the style of Splinter's master, Hamato Yoshi.
Well said. I haven't seen this movie in over 20 years and it still holds up to me. Modern day action sequences rarely tell a story as well as this one
I wouldn't say that about leo like hes better then all of them and more skillfull he just was fortunate shredder still out classed him eventually the others would of got a hit of him too if the fight keep going.
@@tyrelcollins1649 Leo is better at fighting than all of them
@@Poundz978 no hes not
@@tyrelcollins1649 he’s the leader, he’s more composed and there’s been many examples in the cartoons of Leo’s dominance over the crew even tho Ralph is the hot head who can fight just as good as Leo but lacks the composure and experience to deal with his emotions. Ralph makes mistakes often.
For any TMNT fan who grew up in the 80s. This movie was amazing. The work and engineering for the costumes were truly amazing. Blows away any CGI bullshit
I cannot watch any of the later CGI films. This is it for me. This is the only turtle film i will watch
I don't think the cgi is that bad honestly. It's just the turtles look so grotesque when compared to any other appearance. They look so extreme that's it's jarring. My problem with the 2014 films is simply they are all spectacle and lacks any heart. It lacks the personal moments such as when we see the turtles dealing with grief. Even the final battle in 90's film has more emotional weight than the 2014 version. That line of dialogue between Leo and Shredder when he taunts him, shows the depth of love and fury each turtle is feeling at that moment.
This was first film I ever watched in the cinema. I was 6 years old at the time I was already a fan of the cartoon and I had all the toys. I went into the cinema super excited, and I was buzzing by the time it was over. I was blown away by the tone of it and the Jim Henson work on the costumes was incredible. It still holds up today

I hope this new generation watches this movie with an open mind and knows how good this movie is, and always will be. This and the Tim Burton Batman movie are really good.
In which other film does the villain completely wipe the floor with the protagonists without the protagonists rallying and winning? Even in Infinity War against Thanos, they ended up rallying in Endgame. But in this film they don't stand a chance, and it's only Splinter who saves their butts! AMAZING writing.
Exactly, because this story is about the importance of fatherhood. Two adopting fathers, one who loves and one who uses. The kids who are loved always beat the kids who are pawns. The story isn't about learning to survive without your father, but about fathers being there for their kids.
@@anunc8797ABSOLUTELY... This is a major theme throughout the film. It isn't just the theme of the turtles losing and trying to rescue their "father". It's so much deeper. You can see it through Danny's journey and struggle with his own dad. At one point he observs the Shredder explicitly telling the foot recruits that he's their father. He almost goes down that route but in a later scene with the captured Splinter he's told that his father does care for him and of course they eventually reconcile. This movie was brilliant on so many levels. Amazing film with so many characters finding their way throughout the journey.
@@TheLaymanCollector you bet, and that's why it's okay that they lose
@@TheLaymanCollector Exactly and i like how even his defeat is symbolic, the turtles fight the Shredder full of rage and they lose, he wins because he is caom during the whole thing, but the moment he sees Splinter he lets his anger overtake him causing his own defeat against the calm Splinter
@@ironmaster6496 You make an interesting observation considering that at the beginning of the movie Splinter gives Raphael a lecture about the dangers of anger. So that's yet another theme seen throughout the movie. It's brilliant.
I love how the mood changes in this fight; they're all joking and laughing at first, even Leo. By the time they realize they're in over their heads, it's too late. They run a gamut of emotions here; levity, confusion, panic, anger then total fear. Fantastic storytelling. Great way to remind us that these guys are just kids and their emotions are all over the place.
Exactly, yeah they’re ninjas but They’re teenagers

@Vajrawielder no doubt....magnificent scene
Raphs scream and kick always gives me chills. Love this film and that turtle.
Probly one of the greatest if not the greatest comic book films of all time, a perfect combination of the original books and the funny cartoons, a dark yet appropriately serious story, before-its-time fight choreography, and an unexpectedly excellent rendition of the character deisigns that didnt need an ounce of CGI. If this had been released in the superhero movie era, it wouldve been nominated for an academy award.
What's crazy about this while sequence is how the turtles fight shredder separately. Donnie is calculated but can't make use of his weapon. Mikey runs in controlling his weapons but has no plan. Raph goes in aggressively and quickly looses. Leo goes in with control and patience and scores a hit. Perfect reflection of their personalities without even being blatant about it.
Absolutely true. Everything you said is true. But to add, everybody else's choreography is also in character and on point. Shredder stays still, using short movements like a master, and uses manipulation to get what he wants until he falls to his hatred and looses control. And Splinter just stays stoic and uses his enemy's hatred against him. But there's another beat, that Leo is the one to lose his cool in the end and Raph is the one to choose to throw the weapons away, that Donny and Mikey follow. It's because Raph has made his journey and mastered the darkness in him. Leo is still making that journey. I know the sequels change that up but in just this movie's trajectory, it all works. Oh and Casey's choreography is "Oops". ❤
Oh, Leo scores more than one hit, my friend. He actually scores about 2 or 3, if you look and count them.
Raph actually does land a pretty well executed back kick, although given Shredder's Armour it doesn't have much effect.. Leo obviously is the most skilled of the turtles in combat and gave Shredder a run for his money until Shredder employed psychological warfare.
They were also clearly fighting angry

@@MrArtist360: Good point. I believe "Batman Begins" was the first comic book film to be widely appreciated for being grounded in "the real world" as much as possible. (I'm sure there were others before that, but smaller in scope and not as highly regarded.) Before that, they were expected to be much more cartoony, also exemplified by Batman movies -- Joel Schumacher's horrendous additions to the former Tim Burton franchise! TMNT was well before the Nolan films and the sequel (with the infamous Vanilla Ice scene) definitely fell more in line with the expectations at the time. Maybe that aesthetic will come back around, but for now, it's interesting to see how the darker, grittier version is praised so much more nowadays!

figo7ronaldo it seemed he was led by his deep rooted emotions from being scarred by Splinter.
That's actually the psychology behind the character, Orokou Saki is a raging narcissist. He kills a woman when he can't have her after stalking her all the way to another country. He picks a fight with April and orders her NOT to report about The Foot Clan thus bringing attention to The Foot Clan. When it comes to his appearance he carries himself like royalty or a nobleman so having a scarred face would be enough to send him in a blind rage. Let alone he was charging what he believed to be a feeble, elderly rat...so...
Loosing it!! 😆
Shredder falls for the same trick he used on Leo just a few moments earlier, rile up your opponent's emotions so they make a mistake.
Emotions dog, emotions.
When you watch this as an adult and realize it's actually about the importance of fatherhood. Both Splinter and Shredder adopted their children, but Shredder uses them while Splinter loves them. The turtles dont rally and beat the bad guy. They lose. They lose because the story isn't about learning to stand without your father, it's about how fathers need to be there for their children when it counts.
Exactly, and the whole point was Splinter wanted to have his sons also prepare for when he eventually passes away be it in battle or old age. Mikey is the one who refuses to even speak on it out loud because he doesn’t want to even think about it happening. Shredder also cared about his family but only for what they could do for him. This is why when put to the test Splinter’s way wins because love and caring for your family wins at the end of the day.
