  • The Ride Of Steel story hits a bit close to home. There was someone who did not have legs that wanted to go on The Big One at the amusement park my dad was a manager at. The only difference is my dad explained that he would have been thrown out of the ride due to being amputated from the waist down, making the lap bars ineffective. The man was more than happy with this explanation and dad put him on a ride with overhead restraints for as long as he wanted to go on it!

    • They should build roller coaster seats for disabled people.

      @altarush@altarush2 жыл бұрын
    • The Ride of Steel story is not quite accurate. The accident actually happened at Six Flags New England. After the accident the ride was retrofitted with new T bar restraints painted purple and re opened the next season as Bizarro. It remained open as Bizarro until the end of the 2015 season. In 2016 it was repainted using the original color scheme and opened as Superman the Ride. It currently is open and remains one of the top rated steel coasters in the world, ranking 4th in the 2021 Golden Ticket Awards for top 50 steel coasters

    • @@altarush there really isn't anyway to make them safe on most rides. However they do have such seats on certain rides. It really depends on how the dynamics of the ride relate to the specific disability. One ride may accommodate a certain disability, while another ride may not a vice versa. It is really a ride by ride decision. Most parks have a pass that can be obtained, and upon obtaining that pass, they will explain the different requirements and alert as to which rides are compatible with your specific disability and which are not. For example there are some rides which cannot accommodate plastic or metal casts and braces, meanwhile many others can.

      @jameshorath5624@jameshorath56242 жыл бұрын
    • @@jameshorath5624 actually, it _is_ accurate. I grew up going to that very park and my sister was working there the day it happened. The man didn't fall out on a downhill descent, but rather one of the 2 curves of the coaster on which the cars are nearly entirely perpendicular to the ground. The restraint system used has always featured a lap belt along with a T-bar restraint that place pressure on the thighs of the rider. The idea being that the rider will brace themselves with their feet on the car floor and the bar on their thighs. You may be talking about a similar incident or coaster but I can assure you the accident mentioned here occurred at Dairen Lake in Darien, NY. The park was originally owned by Six Flags and the coaster was called "Superman- Ride of Steel". Then, around the recession, Six Flags sold the park to Paramount and thus lost their licensing for the Superman character (as well as the Looney Tunes whose names and costumed characters once graced the "kiddie" area for small children who could not ride most of the standard rides), and they subsequently dropped that part of the name, leaving the coaster simply called "Ride of Steel", although those of us who grew up going there still referred to it as the "Superman". Six Flags reacquired the park several years ago and it's once again called "Six Flags Darien Lake" instead of "Darien Lake Theme Park", but I'm unsure if the "Ride of Steel" was re-christened "Superman" or not, as I've not been in a few years.

  • This reminds me of my childhood. My mom had six kids, so we couldn't afford to go to things like amusement parks, the movies, eating out, really anything. So instead of taking us to the amusement park, she would make me go on websites and look at horrible injuries of roller coasters gone wrong. People having limbs amputated, people dying, people weeping about their lost loved ones, anytime I wanted to do something fun she would fear monger me. I've never been on a roller coaster, and I am terrified of them. But seriously, what kind of mother shows her 8-year-old daughter that kind of graphic content?

  • One of the scariest but most fun coasters I have been on is the Manta at Sea World Orlando. You get in the coaster seated then the whole thing tilts forward so you're facing the ground. When we got in and it tilted forward I just kept yelling "this is stupid, this is stupid. Why are we doing this?" When we got back I was just laughing uncontrollably saying it was the best thing ever. What's cool about it is when you hit on if the loops sending you upside down, you're actually sitting normally right side up. There are some cool coasters at Sea World Orlando and Busch Gardens Tampa.

  • My mom and I had a similar experience with the Superman ride. In a town 30 minutes away from our home town there is a theme park. The ride we were on was called the firecracker (now renamed to the shoot off). The ride usually lifted us a few feet off the ground before shooting you up at high speed and then releasing you back down, similar to the Superman. However, as the ride lifted before the shoot off, I noticed my seat wasn’t locked, and my seat locked as soon as we took off, I got lucky, but I was terrified. As we exited the ride, I came to find out that it happened to my mom too. However, her seat did not lock at all, and she almost flew out. Terrifying experience for the both of us. The ride should have been shut down. But it’s not. The ride has at least one broken seat on all four sides and the people don’t even check if our seats are locked. It was horrifying.

Me and my other teenage buddies would act like idiots on this ride, things switching seats and rocking the raft like crazy, nothing ever happened. It's clear the safety of this ride was pretty good but the safety precautions were not being observed. This ride us pretty mild compared to the other rides at the park, so I can see how it lapsed. When I saw this on TV I had serious doubts the news reports were correct.

  • 25:15 I was at thunder River rapids when the tragedy occurred in 2016. I was 14 at the time, my mum, siblings and I went to the Gold Coast for a holiday and go to all of the theme parks. We got there early in the morning and decided to go on the thunder river rapids first since it was closest to the entrance. The people who sadly died were only 2 families behind us in line, so my family and I had no idea that the tragedy had even happened until we left dreamworld at the end of the day after having a fun day on rides and seen a team of police cars and ambulances. We thought nothing of it and went back to out hotel. It was only then that we heard it on the News and we all froze in shock, I just remember thinking how lucky we were and how horrible I felt for the family.

  • SFOT is my home park and this case always upsets me due to the “eye witness accounts,” which in my opinion was the two women wanting their 2 mins on tv. Anyone who is very familiar with that ride knows that the restraints don’t click; as they are hydraulic operated. There was no dialogue between the woman saying that her restraint didn’t go down all the way, as she insisted on riding even though her body dimensions exceeded the safety specifications for that train. The ride operator in a move that is against the parks ride operator policy, “secured” the lap bar on her stomach rather than the legs as the trains were intended. When gravity took effect at the first turn, her body fat shifted and she flew out of the train which was essentially as if she wasn’t wearing one at all. Her fall ended extremely extremely gruesomely which involved one of the steel, support beams. Tragic situation and fateful decisions made by both her and the ride operator.

The theory is that a portion of her stomach was under the lapbar, and as the coaster hit airtime, the portion of her stomach under the lapbar slid out, creating enough of a gap where she basically ejected out of the car.

  • Fun fact: When I was around 5-7 years old, my family and I went to a park and my father and I went into a roller coaster. His glasses fell off his face, I don’t know what made him believe the glasses won’t fall off if he rode a roller coaster. I started laughing a lot because of that lol

    • my mom usually wears hers and they've never fallen off. if you mostly move in a straight line the g-forces just push them into your face. it's difficult to manage going to a themepark with glasses, because what are you going to do with them? you can't just not wear them unless your vision is almost perfect. you can get those chain things but it's not a guarantee it'll help.

    • Uh, sorry But thats not quite true. As currently the New type of Wooden Roller coasters Made by famous Manufactures like The Gravity Group And Great Coasters International, they give very smooth Experiences of wooden roller coasters. The New Texas Giant is a Ride renovated by Rocky Mountain Construction which Renovates old and unpopular Rough Wood Coasters and but steel track on the wooden structure to make it popular again. Yes Wood Coasters Can be Rough, but thats not every wood coaster in the world. Still some steel coasters can be rough too.

It could reach speeds of up to 70 miles an hour and was reportedly taller than Niagara falls just an idea for y'all

  • Long ago ( I was maybe 8th grade), my friend’s dad was an inspector for traveling amusement businesses coming to northern CA… The stuff he learned thus shut down many a ride coming to town! He was tough! It also created a BAN of his kids and the kid’s friends ever riding traveling carnival rides! I have never EVER been on traveling rides, and very few stationary park rides. I am still freaked out by her dad’s stories!
