The Cases Against Donald Trump with Preet Bharara, Laura Coates, Neal Katyal and Thane Rosenbaum
Donald Trump’s post-presidency and his bid for a second term have been dominated by a dizzying number of criminal prosecutions and civil lawsuits brought against him in various states, in both federal and state courts.
Some have already been decided, while others are paused by appeals. Most are scheduled to go to trial before the Republican Nominating Convention. Two of the cases might reach the Supreme Court and require expedited decisions. Did Trump violate campaign finance laws? Is he guilty of espionage? Did the events on January 6, 2021, constitute an insurrection that disqualifies him from seeking federal office? Was he engaged in racketeering to defraud the American public and obstruct the certification of electoral votes? Are these cases merely a political ploy to upend his campaign?
Join us in discussing this legal showdown that could decide this next presidential election with CNN’s Chief Legal Analyst, Laura Coates; MSNBC legal analyst and Supreme Court attorney, Neal Katyal; and former United States Attorney, Preet Bharara; moderated by law professor and FOLCS Creative Director, Thane Rosenbaum.
Recorded April 7, 2024 at 92nd Street Y, New York.

  • A few remarks: 1. Fani Willis should not have had to endure most of the questioning at all. 2. Ms. Willis quietly had to listen to her name, and that of her ex-boyfriend, being smeared and lies perpetrated to the media by the defense for weeks and months. After having taken all the lies and inuendo she could, she had to speak out. Then the judge took it upon himself, as part of his ruling that; ‘there was no evidence of material conflict that would have affected the case, to pontificate on all the reasons why it ‘looked bad”. None of which had any bearing on the specifics of the ruling. Rather, only served to smear Willis and Wade even further without any evidence. 3. What makes all of this even more absurd, is that evidence was brought that Nathan Wade actually made more money before this case. And could have reasonably expected to continue to do so. So, The defense theory is that, Ms. Willis got Wàde a job, to enrich him, and get him to take her on trips. Why have him take a job for make less money? Especially, if as the defense suggests, the relationship began even earlier, before the case was indicted, and they bóth were attempting to keep it private.? 4. The position Mr. Wade accepted in the district attorney’s office, was rejected by two others who were asked first. They both testified the position, ‘was too dangerous in the current environment and not worth the risk to themselves or their families.’ Yet, Mr Wade, took a pay cut and accepted the position, with its dangerous and obvious risks, as a service to the community. And The fact that ‘Judge’ MacAfee had the audacity to even entertain this purpostrious motion is beyond the pale. And then to make the ruling based on an appearance of impropriety, that Fani must either give up the prosecution or accept Wade’s resignation or fire him. None of this would not have happened if they were not of color. Period. Now we can get on with the trial. Nathan Wade is now much better off, as he testified he was losing money working for them he makes more money outside of this prosecution. He took the job because nobody else who was asked, accepted. The loss belongs to the people of Georgia.

  • I'm still disturbed by the fact, that there could be so much criminal energy by a president, without any of the acclaimed systems of protection providing safety for the people.

  • I hope you don´t want a criminal to be your next president, my dear Americans, no matter how simple minded you may be.

    • “Simple minded” that is funny coming from you calling PRESIDENT TRUMP criminal before he is convicted. Go get educated before you make such an unintelligible comment you “simple minded” with lack of understanding of our legal system.

    • Most of us don’t want him. It’s our faulty electoral system. It’s been corrupted by Republicans through gerrymandering. Our Supreme Court has been corrupted by Republicans. The Electoral College is also the problem. So rude.

  • Judge must warn Trump he will be jailed for 24 hours on 1st Gag order offense. Then 48, 96, then 192 hours and so on. 1 first time. 2 nights 2nd time, and tacking in more time each time he offends. Trump spends hours each day washing and applying his make up. Doing that in jail will embarrass him so much he will finally comply with the Gag order.

    • Trump is pushing to be incarcerated. He will be the biggest victim and it may push his followers to do what he wants, as he has been dog whistling for them to do, which is to take up arms. He can also sleep, as he is an old man. Also, it gives him the clear road to appeal, creating a whole new distraction. I believe that this is why, these very smart judges are reluctant. Having taught 6 year olds, whatever consequence you give an unafraid child, they will create more chaos, within the situation of the punishment. ie start destroying the detention room. He seems to be immune to embarrassment. Like a six year old, he needed to have Mitch MacConnell to send him home. Trump's own mother sent him away.

  • To avoid future illegal retention of classified documents, there should be a logbook of receipt and return of said documents. Why didn’t they have such a simple method of tracking classified documents?

  • At last an intelligent informed opinion from this esteemed team. Thank you to all the participants. Isn’t it rather ironic that the last comment made was the most insightful. Opinion would change should the trial be made public. That begs the question why isn’t it. After all the American public are the jurors eventually at the ballot box. So all should hear the evidence so as to make an informed choice at the ballot box.
