Bob Woodward’s "FEAR: Trump in The White House"

Watergate journalist Bob Woodward’s new book, FEAR: Trump in the White House, announced as the most acute and penetrating portrait of a sitting president ever published during the first years of an administration, is unprecedented.
Talking with Jacob Weisberg, Bob Woodward gives a front-row-seat view of life inside Donald Trump’s White House, as revealed in his new book, FEAR: Trump in the White House. The Pulitzer Prize-winning journalist, an associate editor at The Washington Post, shows how the president makes decisions on major foreign and domestic policies. Drawing from hundreds of hours of interviews with firsthand sources, contemporaneous meeting notes, files, documents, and personal diaries, FEAR brings to light the most explosive debates that drive decision-making in the Oval Office, the Situation Room, Air Force One, and the White House residence. It’s the inside story on President Trump as only Bob Woodward can tell it. Don’t miss this opportunity to hear first-hand as the legendary journalist sits down with the chairman and editor-in-chief of Slate.
Recorded on September 12, 2018 at 92nd Street Y.

  • Bob Woodward is such a highly-respected journalist, and his professionalism shines through especially near the end when the young man from the audience asks Mr. Woodward something like, "What are some of the takeaways from your book that we can use to question our government representatives?" Woodward's response is inspiring.

It's like finding out that a close friend has hit hard times and in order to survive has begun to sell her body. Terrible. Now imagine that you find out that her husband is drinking or drugging all the money she's made, that her children are unshod and wandering the streets and that her husband is threatening anyone who can help. It is so base, so low and this is where we are as a nation.

    • Wow, David. It's so refreshing to hear someone who voted for Trump to not sound like Trump in that when they realize they've been mistaken don't double down and dig in their heels against reality so as not to appear "wrong". We've all voted for who we thought would be best and were let down. The thing that frightens me about Trump is the Autocratic aspects and cult of personality that surrounds him, his supporters and their utter willingness to deny plain facts rather than to simply say, " well, I was wrong. Oh well. What can I do to correct this or move on and do better..." -what same, thinking people do. I don't presume to think Republicans are not intelligent but Trumpism seems to me to be distinctive and not necessarily a conservative agenda in the traditional sense.

    • Bless you too, , Demetri. However, no matter how much damage is being done by Trump (and it surely is)- Trump did not do it all. You are falling victim to a form of nostalgia. The USA had already been downgraded to "flawed democracy" BEFORE TRUMP. Americans thought democracy was a spectator sport or that they could put it on cruise control. (see the Democracy Index). That is not on TRUMP - that is on the society. Capitalism in the USA is no longer capitalism. Rather it is cronyism (and I got my MBA in New Jersey). Cronyism's biggest horror is killing meritocracy. Cronyism is about elevating and preserving an established group at the expense of the nation. The only new blood that is allowed in are the really smart ones who will preserve that system and those people but they never really get any power. The educational system with its legacies and frats are the farm team for cronyism. YOUR final sentence is not pragmatism- it is defeatism. It is not stupid to be optimistic and it is not fashionable to be fatalistic. There ARE SOLUTIONS but you have to want them. This has happened before in other nations (see FRANCE in the 1400s which gave rise to Joan of Arc)- the danger is in the REACTION. These conditions tend to lead to AUTHORITARIANISM and RE-ENFORCEMENT of CRONYISM. DO you REALLY WANT DEMOCRACY? Get to work to make it HAPPEN. Thanks for the conversation.

      @onewomanslife@onewomanslife5 жыл бұрын
    • Debra your brilliant hypothesis remains solvent in theory. history tends to repeat itself. my point to you is your theory as you pointed out started well before Joan of Arc. it is a built in symptom from the dawn of time. all humans posses it. it is built in rest assured. my theory remains simple for the only reason for me to express it . it began for me with the Magna Carta and later the Constitution . you may discover and reveal after that this led to common avenues of reasoning. CRONYISM is not a new symptom . it is and shall remain our masters that lurk from the seas and caves from the dawn of time. it reveals a natural instinct . the hunters and gathers possessed it. this is why i remain weary . because history insists to repeat itself.Thanks for listening.

    • Yes, Demitri, humanity has inclinations that can be destructive. HOWEVER, we also have a higher nature that pushes us toward something better for our children and those we love. That is why the rule of law can be such a noble force. I am an optimist. I must be- I have 5 children.

      @onewomanslife@onewomanslife5 жыл бұрын
    • Indeed Debra! you nailed it! "That is why the rule of law can be such a noble force." the nobility of good laws lay and create a value system that tends to increase the capacity of thinking that produces a stronger structure. for me FDR showed such prowess that led to a reconstruction of the Democratic Principle. based on his vision these Principles lasted almost 70 years. after Watergate began a new era . a downward decadent new age of our integrity being tangled in barbed wire and college kids being murdered in the fields of universities across America. we remain a product of History repeating itself again. to move on to fast forward the orange has emerged and remains to...."Let the silence suck out the truth" . Debra to your 5 children . "may they stay forever young" thank you for our chats.

Your taking a specific person or a few people, wherever they may be, and project this into a huge generalization that does not hold water. You know, I used to listen to liberals on conservative talk shows. The #1 thing that was consistent was this: The conservative talk show host would try to reason with the liberal and have a real debate. The liberal would not reason. It was like they were an intellectual jihadist. They would only make their point and ignore the host. I watched for two years until the decent people on the conservative side beat their heads against the wall trying to reason with a liberal. It's no wonder that Fox usually doesn't have liberals on their programs unless they just want to expose them.

Recall: once upon a time "all men are created equal" was a cockamamie idea. Tax consumption. Tax wealth. Yes, re-distribute the vast hordes sequestered unproductively. Take a break. For a few generations. 12 weeks mandatory paid vacations? Yes. We can if we want to. 50+1 agreement? No way. 2/3rd majority? Statehouse or Congress? I'm inclined towards congress. Tariffs? Yes. 100% working down. Does China, Vietnam, Bangladesh, Turkey, etc, abide ANY regulations a domestic producer would have to? No? 100% Turkey, a NATO country and long time US ally might have 70% or 50%, but you get the idea. Costs will go through the roof for consumer goods. Better made products domestically? Booming repair businesses (typically small, owner-operated - small "r" republican). Let's give rampant consumption a break. Let's us get off the treadmill. There will be still be jobs. Let's concentrate on more vacations. Artisans, entrepreneurs, farmers, craftspeople, brewers, bakers and candlestick makers will still produce. We'll just be surrounded by less junk. Just a few thoughts on a better world. Mahalo

So many Chumpers have 'written' their 'books' - the theme being "He made me do it" so anyone who buys or reads that drivel is essentially braindead. It's so refreshing to witness a logical, practical perspective. I'll buy Bobs book - thank you Sir.

  • Feel like this has given me insight into how the guy is put together. Reinforces the impression I had in 2016: "the guy is an oaf" But as I explained to liberal friends, "imagine back in school. There were cliques. You weren't a jock or one of the popular kids that would get picked as homecoming queen, cheer leader, or even student council. The mean kids would pick on you. Then, out of no where, this big oaf appeared, and instead of picking on you he stood up to the mean kids. Trump supporters know he is an oaf, but he is our oaf" It might be scary to contemplate what the big oaf might do. But it is much scarier to contemplate what the mean kids would do if they manage to defeat him. There have stepped up their efforts over the last four years to demonize his supporters: racist, sexist, greedy, selfish, homophobic, xenophobic, fascist, MAGA-hat wearing, walmart shopping, gun toting, NASCAR fan, gas guzzler driving, creationist, climate denying Trump cult. Yeah - they demonize the republicans in a way that Hitler could take pointers so as to better hate the Jews before he tried to exterminate them, or how Euro-Americans demonized the Native Americans when they were getting ready to steal whatever they were promised in the previous treaty. ( sorry for running so long - first time posting on KZhead - but really motivated as the oaf fight for me, so I need to fight for him )

    • If fighting for you means allowed you to behave the way you've always wanted to behave to others around you that didn't vote for him or scaring ppl by buying a bunch of guns and calling for a civil war, etc ...what he's done has destroyed our country, brought out the WORST in all of us in America and turned Americans against other Americans! On purpose! He HATES THE USA USA USA!! He has ever since banks quit loaning him money and he started having to launder money with our foreign enemies!! And if you think what you're doing is fighting FOR him, please look again bc you're actually fighting for our foreign adversaries and AGAINST your own country! We are not the first country this playbook Trump is following, that this is happening to or has happened to and it's a play by play exact match to what Trump is following! Don't believe he was EVER fighting for you! He was grooming you to fight and vote for him ONLY! If Trump got back into power he wouldn't need ANY OF YOUR HELP ANYMORE! He's not going to pardon anyone! He won't need you anymore! Just look at how easy it is for him to let go of people without any hesitation...even Michael Cohen who was beside him for over 10 years doing many things we will probably NEVER KNOW ABOUT and he threw his ass under the bus!! THEN, Cohen started fighting for himself afterwards! Once Trump's back in he will STOP presidential elections...he expects to stay in FOR LIFE! And he will own the Military so he won't be needing any security Intel from militias anymore! AND countries led by Dictators don't let ppl own anything bc they own it all...esp guns!! He already said on day one he was going to tear up the Constitution and rewrite it...we are all going into the lions den together no matter what nationality you are and all as equals...Trump's workers! Just look @ other countries and how their ppl live! It's pretty hard to do bc they're secluded and unable to leave! If you're an American citizen all he has to do is stop passports! We're F'ked! It's almost impossible to come back from that! For real! Then what will you tell your grandkids, your kids? This is your inheritance bc of us?
