  • Bill is spot on. I was a personal trainer for years. I couldn't take excuses from adults any longer. Grown men and women playing dumb acting like at 50 years old they didn't realize that coffee with whipped cream on top has calories. Happened all the time once a had a wife lecture me on fairness and the struggles of women because I suggested that she have fewer calories than her husband that was more than a foot taller than her. If getting off sugar is the hardest thing you have had to do then you have had a spoiled life.

    • Atheist Monk: I'm not a professional like you are, so I just want to ask if it's Possible that there's something aside from being spoiled behind the excuses and refusal to take responsibility? Why do people overeat? From what I've read and heard, it's usually and generally emotional, psychological, and sometimes, social. So many people of all ages are straight up depressed, afraid, angry, lonely, anxious, etc. Stress eating isn't about being hungry. For many people, "playing dumb" and "acting like they didn't know" about having whipped cream with their coffee wasn't healthy is a shame thing, not simply playing dumb. Also, as Maher mentioned, earlier generations didn't have a problem with this stuff because they didn't dwell on what they didn't have; they worked hard and exercised it off by walking, dancing, and playing games and sports. These are things we don't do on the scale they did, so they were better at managing their weight, stress levels, and emotional life (with the help of family and friends). At any rate, I wanted to find out what you think about the question I asked

They made cakes, chocolate, hamburgers, pancakes, bacon, etc -- and they made it with lots of pure butter, lard, syrups, and sugar (which there have been arguments were actually Better than the artificial stuff we supplement with in the contemporary era). Good health is a combination game. I just meant there's more to things that meets the eye, but generally, we just know they had a good diet with exercise. • @@LA_HA Lots there to digest. It's the sum of everything. The difference between an old push-blade mower, push mower and rider for example. Of hanging your laundry vs dropping it into a machine. Of preparing, cooking and cleaning your meals vs Domino's delivery. Just tons of everyday movement that has been replaced either mechanically or is simply no longer needed. We don't think of walking down the driveway to pick up the morning paper as anything, but do that 365 times a year, and it adds up. Just think if you had to get up to change the channel every time....little things add up. My question is why isn't everybody fat? We have inexpensive food (both good and bad), delivery on demand, and nobody to tell you stop. I think we all have eaten a bag of Oreo's or pint of Ben and Jerry's without thinking before we realized. Food is good and easy. As for the coffee...that's not out of line. I drink 3-5 cups a day. I used to put in a couple of Half and Half little cups. I didn't think about the calories of those little cups. Turns out there's about 20per. I would use 2-3 a cup - let's say an extra 100cl a day. That's 36,000 calories a year, and yes, I did not think about that for 30yrs. But then again, that demonstrates how with a little knowledge and awareness, you can take easy steps to keep off/lose weight.

  • At one point in my life I was a little over 700 pounds. No, that wasn't a typo: I was 2 obese people's worth of FAT. I'm still over 300 pounds, and I'm still working to lose more. I had no problem with people "fat-shaming" me, because no one was more ashamed of it than I was (okay, maybe my wife, but her love was stronger than her shame.) I learned early from my mom that I have an innate worth, and that my physical characteristics are only one part of me. No one can tell me it's healthy to be obese. You can say you know it's a risk you accept, or like I did you can say you're trying to change, but the idea we can't have a simple, FACTUAL discussion without "Woke" silliness is an indication of how close we are to self-destruction.

  • I used to be fat. I am a 5ft 2in woman. I never weighed myself at 200lbs, but I bet I got up there at least once without realizing. I hovered in the 190s for years. One thing I can tell you, trying to motivate me using my looks or social status or being able to fit in clothes never worked. I was fat since I was young. Being fat was familiar. It was comfortable. As much as I disliked how I looked, the superficial reason of "looking prettier" wasn't enough to get me to change. Not to mention, almost all of the many diets I tried made me extremely ravenous (there are diets which don't do this, like keto and zero carb where you will typically be more satisfied after meals, but these were the old days when the diets were things like weight watchers and south beach etc). I started truly changing my diet after major health issues cropped up. And I also finally recognized that I had a sugar addiction. Breaking the sugar addiction was the single best thing I have ever done. It allowed the rest of my diet changes to be, if not easy, at least WAY easier. I've been 4 years sugar free. Getting off sugar didn't make me lose weight, but it allowed me to have more conscious control over my diet. Trying to change your diet while having a food addiction is basically inviting failure, I think. Once I got control over my addiction, I started intermittent fasting. I lost a ton of weight that way. Then, once I stopped that, I started doing a diet which was designed to help my specific health issues. It's similar to keto, but somewhat more restrictive. I am now 135lbs. My health is much improved. (Including things I never anticipated, like my sleep being MUCH better, my energy being much higher, my brain fog being all but gone, no more acid reflux, and my extremely persistent and painful adult acne is gone now, too) My advice to anyone trying to "motivate" people to lose weight, save your breath. Losing weight shouldn't be the goal. It should be breaking food addictions or healing their ailments. It should be to feel better, not look better. Show them people online who have actually succeeded and how they did it. Show them that change is truly possible. And one thing to acknowledge: it's usually not their fault. Yes, I know some people might to try and argue with me. But you're wrong. The vast majority of extremely obese people were overweight or obese in childhood. Most of their food addictions we're started in childhood. And over the years, the food industry has only gotten better at making their foods more and more addictive. I know Bill here thinks food was just as "tasty" in the 60s. And he's right. But it wasn't as addictive. And the most addictive ones were not as cheap or prevalent or convenient as they are now. But just because it's not their fault, that doesn't give them an excuse. "It's not your fault, but it is your problem." We sometimes have to fix problems we didn't cause. That's life. No, it's not fair. But suck it up, butter cup. No one is going to give you a better life except you.

It’s an unhealthy choice you can’t really hide. Drugs/alcohol can have the same stigma once it’s visible. It’s difficult to have everyone see your coping strategies and see that they are failing. So I get it, no we shouldn’t be out there calling a heavier person fatty or whatever….but to not call out someone like Tess Holiday for doing damage to young people’s mental health is ridiculous. Girls like Eugenia Cooney get called out yet she isn’t off the internet when that poor baby soul seems on the verge of death at all times. There isn’t any shame in bringing awareness to a health crisis in our country.

Now the carts seem exclusively for obese people. If I was so fat that I needed mechanical assistance to get around the store to buy the food that keeps me obese...I would think my life took a serious wrong turn somewhere. If I was that heavy, I think I would stay home and die of embarrassment before I rode the scooter down the ice cream aisle, then the frozen pizza aisle, then through the bakery, etc. The right yells "freedom" at this problem and the left yells "don't fat shame!" Well, with freedom comes responsibility (and the reality of your health care costs--in dollars and beyond--are not mitigated by invoking "freedom"), and if pointing out a serious health problem causes bad feelings, tough.

Despite what this soft society wants to tell you it is 100% because of a flaw in the addicts character. Refusal to acknowledge this means you will never recover. It is most certainly, probably, because of the trauma of their early life. So while it most certainly isn't their fault that they're an addict it is their problem. Regardless, you failed to grasp the point I was making. any human when confronted about their behavior will first become defensive. that mechanism can only be overcome by first acknowledging it. You have to exert your will to stop the defensive reaction in yourself. Then listen to the logical basis on which you're being criticized. Then analyze the merits of the critique. This process is called maturity. Getting old is inevitable, unfortunately, becoming mature is completely optional. This applies to all your behaviors, how much you eat, how much you exercise, if you are habitually late for work, everything you do. Some parents have a great understanding of this. They are able to apply the appropriate proportions of support, opportunity, and discipline to a young person so that when they become 18 they are a well-balanced human who is able to deal with life's adversities in a balanced way. While other parents aren't even aware that they should be doing that. While I have no empirical evidence other than my own life. Unfortunately, due to this pervasive puritanical and moralising mindset, even most of the “treatments” (using that term very loosely) utilised are still punitive, coercive, unscientific and ineffective. For instance, there is a highly effective treatment for alcohol use disorder known as The Sinclair Method which has repeatedly been demonstrated to be 77-80% effective in clinical studies. Yet, this method is rarely used; many medical practitioners have never heard of it. What is utilised instead? In most cases, the laughably ineffective, cultish 1930’s religious hokum known as AA. Now then, compulsive overeating is itself an addictive disorder, but this afflicts only a small minority of people who are overweight and obese. Most people can alter their behaviour vis-a-vis diet and exercise without medical intervention, they just choose not to.

These industries have a strong grip on people and for every health-minded person trying to influence people to improve their health, there are probably 1000+ ads/marketing/products that obfuscate health information. You'd bet there is money to be made off of this, and these industries lobby politicians at multiple levels to keep their grips on people's lifestyle; even if 90% of Americans led a healthier lifestyle tomorrow, there isn't enough supply of whole foods to support that demand. Historically, this is the story of the birth of mass-produced low-quality (non-artisan) bread that utilized highly-processed ingredients like fortified flour to feed the masses. All this to say, there are only a certain amount of people in the U.S. that can actually afford to and meet the supply of a healthy lifestyle. The rest will eat processed food and this will not change unless there is medical attention towards people's diets to shift mindsets and increase demand for real whole foods in our agriculture and livestock that people want to eat instead of acres of corn, soybean, canola, etc.

  • The problem has gotten worse because of four words: high fructose corn syrup. It's abundant and often the key ingredient in processed (i.e. cheap) foods. It's also been proven that HFCS increases your appetite more than natural sugar, influencing you to eat more foods with it.

  • Bill's right. Cutting out soda removes a lot of empty calories and sugars. No one must spend hours at the gym. A 30 minute walk and jog - just something to get the blood pumping - will help. Our medical expenses will be cut and we can implement something effective. And over time, it feels good. More energy, more stress relief.

    • Real story I've told a few people... About 12 years ago I was in basic. My bunkmate was this little dude who showed up with 6 pack abs. I asked him how he got em, and told me did about a 80 situps a day and just ate fish for breakfast, lunch, and dinner. A month later, his abs were gone and his stomach looked like mine. I made fun of him for it at the time, but honestly I shouldn't have, it wasn't his fault. In fact, it wasn't anyone's fault. Army food is purposely high calorie, so it makes sense his abs would go away. Long story short, exercise matters, but diet matters even more.

Today is day 165 of hitting the gym at 4:30am, eating right, watching my calories and embracing a new mindset. Down 35 pounds, threw out 5 bags of clothes and just proud of what ive been able to do. Was and is it easy? Hell no. But it’s something you just have to WANT. There are mornings when I don’t want to head out to the gym. But I go as much as it may suck. We are in control of what we do.

    • I never understood that argument. For some reason, people seem to think that you need to only eat expensive super foods to be healthy. No, you don´t need avocados, kale, salmon or anything like that. Chicken breast, rice, potatoes or couscous, coupled with some apples, oranges or bananas for snacks are all pretty cheap. Drinking tap water will cost you almost nothing. Even making yourself a sandwich with some meat and green vegetables in it is not only healthier, but also much cheaper than buying a burger for lunch. I realize that some of these aren´t really the healthiest possible choices, but if you are obese, you will get massive benefits even from those foods.
