Beautiful 1967 MCI getting maintenance. Lots of issues in the inspection - Kingpin bearing & seals

Beautiful on the outside usually means scary underneath. But for the most part this one just needs maintenance. Better condition than most buses we see for the first time. One wheel race not in all the way. A bad kingpin, multiple leaky wheel seals, radiator fan box leaking badly, rust on the suspension, and more all discovered on the first day in the shop. Waiting on parts that should start arriving tomorrow.
Weatherhead sockets similar to ones in the video amzn.to/49Rumw4

If you don't have a impact socket put tape around the socket in case it shattered

So many people take pride in their ownership of their buses but fall victim to unscrupulous repair shops. Good they find Scott!!!
Scott’s BGM channel is the reason we went looking for an MCI in the first place… I always knew we wanted to bring it to him to learn how to maintenance it since there is not a lot of folks around who do. We’re learning a ton while here. we previously had typical RVs… And they don’t hold a candle to these old MCI‘s. We plan on having this bus for a long time and enjoying it. I get more thumbs up in it than I do in any of my old cars lol.
@@frankchodacki6269I completely agree with your comment
That's a good looking coach, what evil lurks underneath... BGM will know.
Scott, you've added another 10 yrs service to that great looking bus in just one visit! Plus the owner now knows what to look for and check on to retain reliability! Congrats!
Whereas I'm not taking apart 30 ton monstrosities, but I went through my 500 buck 2002 Chevy Venture, replacing all four bearing assembies (the rears were literally seized in with rust), all the rear brake hardware including slave cylinders, adjuster hardware, shoes, drums, rear shocks, sand blasted and painted the backing plates, front bearing assemblies, front CV joints, four new tires, and miscellany like replacing the rear wiper motor and arm and all the wiper blades, soldered in a dash illuminator bulb, disassembled and lubricated the drivers side window regulator, prop rod, transmission filter and gasket, bled brakes, disassembled and cleared entire air filter box (mouse choked), cchanged oil and filter, both cabin filters, adlight assemblies ...and I cleaned cleaned cleaned. Mind you the tough stuff (knocking out the rear bearing assemblies) were a nightmare! But getting ALL that done, the car runs as smoothly as a Cadillac and accelerates and corners like a scalded cat. All vibrations gone. So like you, just scaled down, you can transform a rattletrap into a really nice vehicle if you have the time and the shop. Tools were not too exotic. Hard work and good planning can result in a nice vehicle.
This reminds me of riding 3+ days on a Trailways bus in '68 from San Diego, Ca. to Raleigh, NC.
Keeping them running one at a time!
Nice toolbox. Hopefully the dealer keeps showing up.
Didn't get my dose of the diesel show at the end of the video. Maybe a short part 2 so we can hear some more of this engine?
You bought the "Im not asking" gun abd the pulley popped off when you touched it. You win! 😂
I’ve never had a king pin come out so easily.
The tiger tool kingpin press they all come out like that.
That is a beautiful bus 😊 bought expensive as that tool box 😅
Hi guys, I'VE been following you now for a few years i am subscribed, and i thought I would let you know I'm in New York on holiday and had a bit of a road trip down to DC and on the way back we took the back roads and came across a harbour freight and as you seem to use and mention them a lot I had to stop and go in, oh how I wish we had a shop like that in England. Love the videos and buses as I did my apprenticeship on the buses when I left school in the 70s, but I'm used to the Gardner engine
How about Machine Mart for tools?
G'day Scott, A very interesting video. I truly enjoyed the hands on content. It is a very beautiful bus. Is there a chance we could have a peak inside. So thanks for sharing. I'm looking forward to seeing part two of this bus. ✌️ Peace from Melbourne Australia.
keep the clips coming
Nice tool box!😎👍
Do not ground to that shaft as the voltage can pass through (arc) the roller bearings pitting the race(s) & balls. Seen a ton of trashed Kawasaki KZ900 & 1000 crank shafts were people grounded to the connecting rod and welded the crank pins. (weld the crank pins to keep the crank from twisting as they are not a one piece crack.) Rod and main bearings are roller bearings odd for a 4 stroke but most all 2 stroke motorcycles are like that. Spent about 40 years working on motorcycles. Just trying to help.
We didn’t ground to the shaft we grounded to the bolt next to the one we welded
Enjoy your videos. Thinking of getting a bus!
😮😮😮😮❤❤wow lots of work going on here
Love the green tool box. That is definitely a great design. Yeah I know it’s a snap on and it was expensive. But, sometimes you just need to treat yo self!
He will pass it on to my granddaughter ;)
I was going to get the same green but ended up with a dark purple box....
Jonathan works hard! He earned it. Good guy! Glad he could get it!!!!
@@ricksmith4736 i bought a bright red one ,best investment i ever made ,,mine is a KRL720 ,had it about 10 years now and am very happy with it
One handy thing about not cleaning and degreasing before you strip down a part or sub-assembly - any welding splatter from stubborn/stripped/snapped bolt removal won't stick very well when it lands.
Sounds great!
Thanks for the video.
That is exactly what I want to do to mine, and I see it helps tremendously to have the right tools for the job. Perhaps I can win the lottery, and bring mine to you for some hands on training, and it would give me a huge peace of mind to know that all of it had been tended to. I don't have a safe place to work on mine.
You said it always safety first . I have a wish list for lottery money to,HA !!!
Howdy and another great vid, Please do not use chrome sockets on an impact wrench, it's not if, its when it explodes. Eye protection always, so you can keep on looking at pretty things in life.
Отличный инструмент! Классное, Интересное получилось видео! Мне понравилось! Круто Круто!!!👍👍👍
Rusted through frame rails tells me she wasn't originally from Texas ... wow.
I would like to see the inside set up in this Vintage Chariot 👍👍
I got a free popcorn machine and a new Corvette with the last Snap-On tool box I bought.
🤔😳😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂
Scott, when you use the Quinn torque adapter to tighten and set torque specs on something with a crows foot wrench, do you just put the crows foot at 90 degrees to the angle of the ratchet or breaker bar? Or does that only work with a click type ratchet? Do you use a math formula instead?
Please stop kneeling on the concrete, trust this old man.
Do you guys use air tools anymore? I’m just now trying to switch over to battery powered tools, I resisted for a long time until they came out with lithium ion batteries but I still like my air tools.
what is your go to for cleaner? about the only thing I have found that works is brake cleaner for heavy stuff.
What are those “blowers” they are taking out by the engine? Is that to bring in cool and extract warm air? Sorry, just trying to learn.
👍👍👍👍😀😀😀
I haven’t seen your son on the videos. What did I miss?
scott, provided proper maintenance is done over time on a bus like this, how many miles can one expect the kingpins to last before its time to replace them, or the bushings or both? just curious.
If you grease them regularly they last a very very long time. Grease is the longevity pill 💊 for long lasting chassis parts.
yes, i was wondering about the miles 100k? 150k etc. provided they were greased as they should be.@@BusGreaseMonkey
Many hundreds of thousands of miles. If greased regularly
Bus grease monkey is teaching owners how maintenance / repairs should be done. It's shocking the number of maintenance / repair shops are board line criminal.
VW tail lights?
Yes vw van x2 on each side
Was the other kingpin OK?
No play at all in the other one.
Why the 'broom' attached to the rear, surely good mud flaps are what you need behind the wheels only.!
Commonly referred to as a hula skirt they help keep the towed behind vehicle clean. amzn.to/48xWNxS
Nice looking tool box. Why not just get one from Harbor Freight instead? Thats a lot of money for a name.
I have not seen one with a work station sliding top at harbor freight. Send me a link to one because i would like one for myself.
That high quality tool box will easily pay for it's self over the coming years.
3:18 over-engineered monstrous pile of crap.
Do you not have a ratchet lol?
Why waste your dollars on a BLING Snap on tool box when you can get the US General at Harbor Freight for 10 times less?? Same Quality!
Clueless but it was not 10x more than a hf.
