MIG welding is supposed to be easy...right? Just pull the trigger and squirt some metal in the joint and it's all good...right? WRONG! Like any other form of welding, MIG welding is an art that needs to be practiced.
In this episode we're giving a shout out to one of our Instagram followers, @C_Tucker7. We are going to go over the basics of MIG welding and what to look for in a variety of different positions and scenarios, including:
- Flat
- Horizontal
- Uphill
- Downhill
- Weaving
- Straight Lines
- and more...

  • When I trained at my current job all I did was tig weld coupons for 6-8 hours a day for 6 months. That was about 30 years ago. It made me fast and pretty confident. I wasn’t allowed to weld a real part for that training period. Still welding at the same major airline today after 33 years. Welding part is easy and less time compared to the prep. Very helpful video for getting started into mig or maybe fcaw.

  • When I was teaching welding, I couldn't stress enough how clean material will yield a clean(er) weld. That would be a good video for beginners. Teach them right from the beginning and they'll carry that throughout their life.

  • Amazing skill ! My father was a welder and millwright at US Steel. I was worked the summer months and he taught me welding. And went on to trade school in PLUMBING AND Pipefitters Local 91 prior to my father’s relocating he previously worked as a welder ion off shore rigs for Shell Oil. This trade has been very rewarding for a lifetime. Now retired I would highly recommend any young person man or woman to pursue a bright future in this highly demanding profession! Loved watching your skillset!

  • Thanks for you patience in teaching. I recently purchased a cheapy mig 200 amp welder and even though I am not a certified welder, I thought I should remember how to lay down a fairly decent bead but no matter what I did my weld beads wouldn't lay down, they were always high. I then saw you do a video on using straight Argon and I said that's what my weld beads look like. I had bought a bottle of what I was told was 75/25% Argon/Co2 off of Craigslist. It was a great price for a full bottle and the gentleman may have not know or the gas may have goofed. Anyways I exchanged the bottle and my welds are laying out like they should but, I'm basically re-learning after so many years. Thanks again

  • Thank you. As you weld about how far is your tip from the pool? Or put another way how long is the wire. I read you clip the wire at a 1/4 inch, but that certainly doesn’t seem to be the length of wire as you weld. So when you start the weld are you pushing the trigger while holding the tip steady waiting for the wire to lengthen and start arching?

  • What is your recommended prep for 1G (with no backing tab/strip), on a 3/8" plate, using MIG? I tried 1/8" opening on a knife edge and it looked like grapes were growing on the bottom of my plate. Tried 3/32" opening with a 3/32" land, and did not get enough penetration. I was running .035" ER70S-6 wire at 17.9 V, 190 ipm per minute, with 35 cfh 75/25 Ar/CO2 mix. Thanks!

It seems that most people "push", and you seem to "pull"; is this correct, and does it make a difference? Also, one of my biggest problems is that I can't see to keep a straight line.
