This video just popped up in my feed. I enjoy-joyed watching it. You can tell the instructor has been teaching beginning welders for quite some time. Listening to him was just like watching a safety film from the factory and OSHA, all rolled into one! Hat's off to you, Sir! His students are LUCKY to have him! My Dad taught me to weld with oxy/actlyn torch and a wire coat hanger, by the time I was 10. Then by 14,he had me fluent with Silfoss, brazing & silver-soldering A friend / Industrial Arts teacher, in junior high, taught me basics of Stick Welding. I taught myself MIG. My little machine is the next oldest from your unit (125). I don't use the innert gas. I run reverse polarity and .035 Flux-core wire. The biggest project I've built with it is a 1/3 circle raised deck around my pool with a wheelchair ramp up to it. (decked with 5/4" wood decking). I'm saying this to state one thing...This little Lincoln single phase welder has lots of potential and can be used on BIG jobs, easily! Learn it. Learn how to take care of it. It will take care of YOU. T H A N K S !!!

Nearly 50 years welding I stumbled upon this video. For sure an excellent instructional video for the very newest welder, and a good one. One note... One should never stand in front of a regulator in case it explodes, and always release the regulator's adjustment so when a cylinder is cracked open all that pressure does not hit the regulator bonnet. Once the regulator is charged, then you dial up your working pressure. After purging you release the regulator's adjustment.

The shielding gas is to prevent exposure to atmospheric gases. That is, not just oxygen, but also nitrogen and water vapor. Nitrogen is really the biggest culprit, so if you name just one, name nitrogen. Oxygen is even used in small amounts mixed in as part of some shielding gasses. Metal, which is hot to the point that it is melting, absorbs these gases and vapors. This makes for a porous, and therefore poor, weld. They can also make welding more difficult since the metal will spatter.

Very good lesson. Only comment other than the "flip flops" is; with high pressure cylinders you should OPEN THEM ALL THE WAY. They have a double sealing valve in them; they seal at full closed position and at full open position. In a partial open position they can leak around the stem.

Female welder here: been welding since 2001 and still have yet to find gloves that remotely fit and it SUCKS. I have to cut and sew all of mine and even then I'm struggling. I unfortunately am a child sized adult so the struggle is REAL. Only in recent years have I been able to find steel toe boots. When I started I had to flop around boots 20 sizes too big because you couldn't find a little boys size 2 steel toe!

When I went to welding school my hair was nearly to my ankles in length. I cut it off (after over 12 years of growing it!) Before the first semester ended! You're exactly right: anybody with any sense knows you have get it all pulled back and secured well- preferably in a tight braid. Mine was so long I had to braid it back and then try to twist the braid into a bun, which then gave me trouble getting my hood on. Just sticking it down your jacket doesn't cut it. Mine would've hung out the bottom of the jacket anyway lol but when you turn your head hair tucked in a jacket would come right out and be burnt off instantly.

He's a good teacher. Great intro. Thanks - and good luck to Miss Karen!
This was a great class for the beginners. I really like his lecture cause he explained everything very clearly. I found his lecture very useful
Great video. I can't go back to high school to learn to weld, but I can sit and watch these videos. Thank you very much for making it.
True,Thx for pointing it out to the noobs, also,he needs to open the tank valve completely, most tanks(not acetylene tho),have seals at the top of the valve so if you don't fully open the valve until it stops, you get leaks(one of the things he was whining about),also sometimes you HAVE to weld in a wet area, get over it teacher!!This lesson is so full of holes, the mice come out when I play it ;)
this is an amazing lecture. Extremely well done. Raise to you, sir.
Brilliant introduction to welding! Thanks for posting this video!
This man explains everything very very well. To all you commenters who say he talks too much or hes boring, just go watch some cartoon.
I wish all instructors were this good. This man really knows his stuff.
Thank you sir! Very detailed step by step procedures and the why(s) of each thing. Great communicator! Please keep the video classes up! Best regards.
Mr Smith, you are a very good teacher. Thanks for this video. I am looking forward to your advanced video's. How many more are available besides this one?
thanks our teacher we learns more & continue your work efficiently
Well done Mr Smith - that was a clear and informative demonstration. I'm pleased to see UCITLTC broadcasting this sort of information. Congratulations to Karen (sp?) for sticking with it for 30+ minutes with grace and diligence.
This was an absolute great video. I am looking to learn how to weld and this instructor has left me feeling like I'm making a good career choice.
Amazingly patient teacher. Clear, concise instruction provided and amazingly easy to follow pace. The way you explain the tools also helps to gain a deeper understanding. Your students are very lucky. I plan to learn to weld one day to help me restore my Dad's Camaro
Really thorough stuff. Was looking through a lot of videos but this one is really detailed and in depth. Great stuff!
What a brilliant, patient, teacher!! Thanks for the video.
This was really interesting, the"advanced" version of this video was very helpful.
Advanced MIG is called "stick".
I want this guy as my uncle. Going to him every Sunday and making weekend projects.
Is your granny single
This REALLY helped. here in England we don't have people like you who are actually good with tools.
Great video, I'm using this video to write down notes and go over them before I start taking classes
Great intro to welding.
Jimmy Springer hi am Api1104 welder but I want to learn Mig welding I need admission in ilally welding accodamy can you help me
Very good lesson. Only comment other than the "flip flops" is; with high pressure cylinders you should OPEN THEM ALL THE WAY. They have a double sealing valve in them; they seal at full closed position and at full open position. In a partial open position they can leak around the stem.
Wow and 5 years later I'm still watching him!
Excellent teaching ..... thanks very much
"You could catch on fire." It's only scary the first couple of times you catch on fire.
Lmao right
haha
Fantastic beginner video, I bought a welder to learn how to weld (flux core) and this guy did an amazing job of explaining details that I need to know, like the grease for the tip, etc.
no grease needed for that type. its for the gas models
Thanks to this video and the instructor. Excellent video! I would recommend it to any beginner.
Typical Philippina; smart, focused, patient, cute, very attentive. That's why I married one.
Our teacher forced us to watch nearly every minute of this. If the girl wasn't cute, i don't think i could have survived
I know right, it was painful to watch but Miss Karen was definitely arcing my electrode.
Then he started telling her about the penetration ring and it was all over.
She's not even close to cute.
She's about as cute as Covid-19 👀😂
you've been welding for way too long you need to get your eyes checked. she is nowhere near cute... lol
You are a very excellent teacher, probably the best I've ever seen.
Glad I found your video! Very informative and helpful. I haven't welded since high school and forgot everything about it. I need to rent one to repair a rusty iron handrail. Thanks for posting!
That was extremely informative .I really enjoyed the video .I would love to see one on flux core 120 volt welding thin metal with just the hi and low temp setting .
good instructer
This guy is natural born welding teacher! I watched with interest , while I do not even have a welder :)
Very soild fundimental welding, well done! Nothing like a basic weld course to keep you in check!
Thanks for the demonstration. Nice video.
Hello old comment. Welcome back to this video, it’s been 9 years :)

I love your channel. Who owns that 200X Suburban BTW?
Excellent video for the beginning welder. Yeah I know a lot of people could fly thru this, but this is exactly what day 1 welders need.. a solid foundation to build on, then as experience is gained you can develop your own style.👍 Nicely done.
Awesome class, loved it! Thank you.
I've not started welding yet, but when I do, I'll watch this again, thanks for the info
"I'll use these gloves that allow movement and control and you wear those astronaut's gloves. Okay, let's weld!"
thetitanicreformchannel As a newbie I got the "astronaut's gloves" in the package I bought. I take large gloves and they drown my hands, I bet her hands are a third of the size of mine and even the small size would be very cumbersome on her.
"So, if you do it accidentally once or twice, no harm no foul" Love the good natured teacher!
Thank you for this video. It covers a lot of basics and show the right and wrong way. Very informative and very helpful.
Didn't know about the pliers and the greasing bit. Useful info. A dedicated student.
5:31 seems it would be smarter to tie long hair behind your head with an elastic than just to tuck it into the jacket, what if it gets loose while you're working without you noticing?
I thought the same thing, I would have made her tie it back, just common sense.
Mine would've hung out the bottom of the jacket anyway lol but when you turn your head hair tucked in a jacket would come right out and be burnt off instantly.
love how that girl is just standing there the entire time.
A good instructor must explain to the novice beginner in great detail the basic of welding. It may be the only time that the students receives these details which will come back to memory when when frustration sets in. I have welded all my life so I can say good job !
I really appreciate this class i feel like if i were there very good teacher's explication
"Gas metal arc welding (GMAW), sometimes referred to by its subtypes metal inert gas (MIG) welding or metal active gas (MAG) welding", Is the "mechanised" bit a US convention or just this guy's?
This is like a military training class. 50 mins of theory. 10 mins of practice.
Great video! This video holds the record for this channel. Look at the views! Very educational and the instructor is easy to understand.
Enjoying, when I was in high school I tried to take a welding class but I was bullied out of class. I was the only girl. So refreshing to see a lady learning.
I was the only girl in my class of 48 boys. Some of them tried to give me hell but I ignored them, paid attention and did what I was there to do. I was the only person in my class to get certified in all welding applications plus torches, production line and carbon arc. I was and STILL AM the only female in the history of the school to ever get certified in even one application. So. I had the last laugh. Shoulda stuck it out, they just proved how insecure they were and how scared they were that you might be better than them. Never too late to go back, you know....!!!
well some people learn pretty well by watching...but im with you..if i dont do it myself it doesnt really stick
Shes beautiful!
Yup Karen is a hottie!!!
The key word in Welding as opposed to surface soldering is Fusion.. the two parts are fused together by make the surfaces molten and adding ‘filler’ rod as needed. Great video
I have a mig and I didn't know half this stuff. great video. thanks guys
I mig weld nearly naked, just to get the sun tan, works great
Safety 3rd brother
This is very informative and very thorough but don't you think Karen should pull her hair back into a ponytail or a braid?
Thanks for the great MIG introductory/teaching video!
Very good instructions. Just got a job at a factory and eventually I'll be welding for them so this was a great introduction
Be patient.
I found him to be extremely patient. Welding is serious stuff so he's being direct and firm...not impatient.
Never stand in front of the regulator when opening valve.
Great explanation from this instructor thanks so much great patience
Very good demonstration indeed by Mr. Smith. He is very thorough and clearly knows what he's talking about and doing. Thank you
