Faking It?? Doctor Reacts to Aljamain Sterling vs Petr Yan Illegal Knee at UFC 259
Aljamain Sterling became the new bantamweight UFC champion at UFC 259 after Petr Yan was disqualified for an illegal knee. Sterling was clearly concussed but there is drama in the MMA community accusing Sterling of milking it and acting his symptoms so that the fight would be called. In this video I'm going to explain what happened and why this thinking is ridiculous.

You have no idea how many times fighters have acted knocked out on fouls intentional or not. The knee probably hurt him but he wasn’t unconscious from it bad enough he couldn’t get up. This is a world you just don’t understand, there were shots that landed on him harder than that knee and he was fine mid fight. Try using logic, you think you’ll throw away the opportunity to become a belt holder and be guaranteed belt holder money for the next fight, which is enough money to enter the next tax bracket? If you just can’t picture that sounds to me you should be watching golf and not men fighting for fame, money, and glory.

Head injuries are crazy hard to predict. As an ER nurse I've seen someone fall headfirst 15 feet and walk out in 3 hours, and I've also seen someone code after tripping on the sidewalk. Always take brain injuries seriously
A doctor talks for 5 minutes about how every oncussion is different and we shouldn't judge.... Some guy on the comments: "hold on, I'm talking brother"
Problem is that he said there’s nothing that would lead him to believe Aljo didn’t suffer a concussion to that degree and thereby was big acting. But as someone else mentioned, this is clearly a casual opinion that believes “Ungloved knees” are the most deadliest strike in mma history. Across sports, even in basketball, apparently people don’t know how to fake injuries. Not a single person, fan, amateur fighter or professional believed that Aljo had the injuries to the magnitude he was acting on. But ok, Bc a doctor on KZhead said it, definitely invalidates the entire ufc industry, including the doctors that examined and cleared Aljo.
@@user-se2xg7tq5u Idc what a fan, amateur fighter, or professional fighter has to say. If a doctor says that every concussion is different I’m gonna validate his opinion over any other person without the degrees he has. Petr Yan knew the rules and didn’t care to follow them. Is sterling champ? Yes. Is he a deserving champ? No. I believe he still has to prove himself or he will be considered a paper champ. But I’m not gonna accuse a professional fighter of faking it when there’s more evidence proving that his concussion was legit rather than an act. All people have different results when it comes to brain trauma. Ben Askren got put to sleep and is back to normal. Look up Prichard Colon, he was get hits to the back of the head for an entire fight and was fine till near the end of the fight. After the fight he looked fine, walked to his locker area and sat in a chair, all of a sudden he vomits up blood and faints. They take him to the hospital and they diagnose him with a brain bleed, he goes into a coma for almost a year then wakes up in a vegetative state. By the way in that same boxing match a doctor came in to evaluate Prichard in the 6th round and said Prichard was good to continue fighting. The fight ended in the 9th.... a doctor can not properly diagnose a brain trauma at ringside

I think the big issue I heard about was that they basically said “yeah if he can’t continue then he wins the fight” within earshot of Sterling and that made people feel like he could’ve been disingenuous. That’s where the skepticism comes from more than his actual behavior. That said, I’d have been more surprised if he was okay after that shot than I am that he wasn’t.

Just b/c he didn't have a concussion, doesn't mean he was faking it. How dense are you? Try faking this sequence, and put a video of it online. 99% of the world are horrible actors, good luck. Good video man, solid break down. Man I don’t know where I need to go around and say this, when this happened to Anthony Smith two years ago and he immediately went towards getting back up. Yes all conclusions are different, but man for years I’ve wondered why Anthony Smith doesn’t get the fame he deserves.
I think Bisping had a similar thing in one of his big fights. Knee to the head after ref called a stop. He continued and won.
Hi doc, ex fighter here, I agree completely with you analysis looked like he landed around the temple area too. When you are concussed it may look weird to some people and your behaviour may look odd because your brain is still trying to compensate what just happened while also trying to recalibrate itself. He looked pretty concussed initially and his breathing and sweating increased, it really doesnt feel good. Hes kind of stuck between a rock and a hard place, trying to make that decision when concussed isnt really the fighters duty its the docs. The blame lands souly on Yan and his corner, and this is a sport with rules so like it or not its a DQ. Everyone will always point fingers in such a high profile fight with and ending like that, all they can do is run it back to resolve the issue.
Why do they pad the fists and leave the hardest bone your knee without padding along with how fast a kick can be without padding as well?
Amen Thanks for doin this.
Pride FC fighters have entered the chat Seriously though Yan should have known better. He had eyes down on Sterling and shouldn't have thrown the knee.
Nevermind the ref telling him moments before "he's grounded!" Quick-edit: He clearly speaks enough english to understand that btw
@@TheLtGo You need to watch John McCarthy and Josh Thompson break that down. They explain exactly why the referee messed up when he did that. Also he shouldn't have told Aljo that it would be a DQ win if he didn't go back out and put him in the position to decide if he wanted to win like that.
@@janblachowiczsfatgrandson7833 So refs aren't messing up when commenting on fingers in the cage, 12 to 6 elbows or fingers pointed towards the other figthers eyes, but they are when clarifying a confusing rule that varies based on what state the fight takes place in???? That's not coaching, that's the ref setting and maintaining the frame the contest takes place in, which incidentily happens to be his job. If he did say that stuff about the DQ to Sterling though, that would be coaching and isn't okay.
@@TheLtGo Yan couldn't see Aljos legs from the angle they were standing which is why he was asking his corner if he could strike and they said yes for whatever reason, no arguing thats just stupidity. As soon as Aljo put his hand on the mat the ref warned that he was down leading Yan to believe that his knees were up and he was only grounded because his hand was on the mat which explains why as soon as his hand comes off the mat he gets blasted with a knee. Do some fucking research and maybe you would actually learn what you're talking about.
He couldn't see the leg and he waited to throw the strike until his corner shouted knee, at which point he thought it was a legal strike

I’ve had concussions in football and played thru pretty much of all of them but you can tell when someone is dazed by their eyes his looked clear. It was 100% illegal tho and to carry on with the fight he would of just taken more damage but hey its a championship fight.

Aljo was cleared of concussion? Keep believing what you wanna believe dreamer 😂 it was a huge knee no doubt, but aljo deserves an Oscar. Thank you for your analysis, I thought Aljamain was acting strangely after the fight.
That's because he was. When this guy said he looked lost and confused, he left out the part where Aljo had a few calm and casual words with his coach... BEFORE all of this rolling around. Keep in mind that these guys fight for a living. They've seen countless concussions (most of them have experienced it themselves at least once) and as he says in the video, head trauma has a huge range of possible symptoms. It would be easy for any of them to fake it.
@@mookamoka3 I think the doc's video is mainly to warn against jumping to conclusions like yours... Calm and casual words... Dude you're so vague... your perception might also be wrong
@@Johnnysimz Both of those things are possible. Was quite drunk by the time the fight rolled around. Either way though, if you watched the fight you know it ain't that much of a leap. Everything about the aftermath felt 'off.' Yes I'm being vague again cause I don't want to rewatch it and type out all the details.
He was and he's got an Oscar nomination. And what happened after the fight makes it clear
@@mgmodp8966 you guys are quick to judge just saying. All the excuses I find about him faking it are total trash. Most revolves around highly skewed logic like the following " hey look how he behaved" or " mister x has seen 1000s of ko and says that he never saw someone behave like this after a ko". All a bunch of bullshit excuses
No one is arguing how hard the knee was or what effect it could have on someone. But based on the countless concussions fans have seen and his behavior afterwards, it looked exaggerated. Still, I don't think the fight should have kept going because even if he wasn't concussed, we don't know how compromised he was and how that would have affected his performance. At the end of the day, it was a nasty illegal knee. Fight should be stopped right away and not left up to the fighter to continue even if he wants to. The disqualification was just.
Ben Askren most certainly did not recover right away. He looked dead for about five minutes and then was carried out without even staying for the decision.

Agreed with you in part, it is also subjective, because there is not way also to prove that he was not aggravating the situation bc it was so convenient for him, confusion sometimes (no always ),is like for example being in pain, from 1 to 10, I can tell you the number that I want and you have 2 options to believe me or not.
