2022 Toyota GR86 Full Review featuring Mk8 VW GTI and ND2 Miata - Jason Cammisa on the Icons Ep. 04
The second-generation Subaru BRZ and Toyota GR 86 are here, and we've driven the Toyota together with the 2022 Volkswagen GTI Mk8, a drag race against the venerable Mazda MX-5 Miata, and a surprise visit by a Porsche 944 Turbo.
This is a full track and road review of the new Toyota 86 and Mk8 GTI as you've come to expect from Jason Cammisa including loads of beautiful sideways slides, donuts, J-Turns, and - perhaps more importantly than anything else - perspective and insight.
Why is a rear-wheel drive sports car such a big deal? If the GTI is so good (and it is) why is the iconic sports car recipe always RWD? Is it just because of weight transfer and the traction circle?
Jason explores this and more - and comes to the conclusion that the Mk2 Toyota GR86 is the spiritual successor to the Porsche 944. You'll have to watch to find out how and why.

Hagerty, give EVERYONE on this crew a significant raise. Pro quality and compelling writing.
HEY BOSSMAN DID YOU HEAR THAT!?
@@JasonCammisa lol
I'd literally pay money for this kind of content. I didn't like him at first when he replaced Carlos Lagos on MT, but Cammisa is probably my favorite car personality right now.

It's weird being on youtube and watching this for free. This looks like a million bucks, from the writing to the photography. Great work, immense production value along with educational value right here.
Crazy high production quality, Anthony Esposito is a genius!
True it's almost like some netflix show.
Yes, thanks for Hagerty and Jason. Regards from Chile.

Kind of filled the void left by the OG top gear I just can't justify having 8 streaming services

Best car series in YT right now. Everything is spot on.
Just overall beautiful content
i would love less clowning. makes me wonder if the targeted audience are potential buyers or their thirteen year old sons ^^
@@MyRealName but it’s Jason, what else do you expect. If you want his more serious show watch Revelations. And if you want technical reviews more aimed towards prospective buyers watch The Straight Pipes or Throttle House. But if we are going to be honest Jason talks a hell of a lot about how the car drives from the torque curve to how it responds under load in a corner
Including the drag queen? 😄😂🤣
I love the format of featuring more than one car and make on these reviews, test drives, as well as well pointing out differences such as drive types, and all the pros and cons of each including practicality. The GR86 has come a long ways. I’m liking it too.
This video alone sold me a GR86 and i still come back to watch it
Hagerty is quickly turning into a masterclass on car content. So glad to see Jason being part of this!!
true that. that said - 13:20 fake engine noise is not a problem in this Toyota?
I look forward to every video they put out. More than I can say for most car KZhead content.
Choreography, stunts, & Jason. Just brilliant entertainment
And don’t forget about the “drag” race 🤣😆😂
Thank you! 🥰
that was one heck of an intro, seriously
Also! If you didn't have the closed captions on they are hilarious! Watch again with them on
Executed to near perfection, which is perfection
Cammisa is simply one of the best there is at explaining the driving dynamics of a vehicle. I find myself searching out his content more and more! Keep up the clarity and enthusiasm!
whoever wrote the subtitles deserves a raise. amazing
"Disturbing O noises" LOL!
What a great production. Script, photography, talent, knowledge, storytelling, music and editing. Best I’ve seen in a while!
I came for the 86 but stayed for those qualities.
When an embargo lifts there's like 8 reviews to choose from, but I'll always go with Cammisa first
I still can't get over the quality of this video (and most everything made by Jason and Anthony). The direction and cinematography is on another level compared to anything anyone else has ever made (including TG/GT), I can't believe it isn't a bigger team.
This is the first time in a long time that I have rewatched a YT video in the same week! I am captivated by the story telling and educated at the same time about history and the accurate vehicle comparisons. New subscriber here and cannot wait for more Hagerdy content!
7:13 someone need to hand these guys an award, holy crap that shot is epic
I am loving that chronography. FWD making use of its max grip and the 86 just slides in like nobody business. No wonder it got so many violation tickets. (05:04)
it might need an Initial D soundtrack
Completely agree! I rewound that to watch again a bunch of times! LOVE IT!!
I just cannot agree more
I laughed out loud and woke up the baby during this part
Ok this was a straight up flex by Hagerty. I watched every GR86 review today. This blew them all out of the water.
Same
On god
Yeah it did! Every other review was "eh, so it's a smidge faster". This review actually puts in perspective where this car fits in the lineup of cars available in it's price range and showed you why you would or would not care. I might fall into the "don't care" camp, but this was funny and entertaining with excellent production quality.
This channel's quaity is insane. The videography in it's every frame is straight out of Hollywood and brings a smile to my face, the "nerd-talk" in between is so well brought across and the and the commentary is really well thought out. Some lines really make you think. It's insane to be watching this on KZhead for free. Thank you for this great content. You have a new subscriber!
These guys are great, love this guys style and knowledge, well written and the cinematography looks great as well. Haven't been this excited about a car show since the first time I saw Top Gear. These guys deserve a studio audience soon.
Cammisa, that was a perfect film. And I don’t say this lightly, as I watch lots of these; enjoyable, informative and creative. 10/10. Well done sir
Thank you!
My thoughts exactly! The best car content I've seen in a LONG time. I'm sure these high production videos cost a bit to make, but they're totally worth it!

You know this GR86 is so timeless that I already see this becoming a modern classic in a world full of EVs
I can see it being inflated to hell in the future because of a certain racing anime lol. All love tho this car makes me want one.
The GR86 will probably be one of the last of its kind. Countries are trying to phase all ICEs out in 2030 (probably won't make it) but that's still the target.
Much like the MR2 and Celica

@@tootsiejoon you must be new
My interest in cars has been waning lately, but watching Jason Cammisa in Hagerty's videos is sparking that enthusiasm back and feels a lot like when I first started watching Top Gear as a kid. Thank you.
Jason, you're the MASTER when it comes to auto reviews. Motortrend hasn't been the same since you left. Stellar review. Loving that new GR86, and unlike other sports cars, I can actually see myself owning one on a 👨🚒's salary, and I am just shy of 50. My first car was a 1985 MR2, and it taught me a lot about handling dynamics. I have missed that car ever since, and now that 2 of my 3 children are about to leave the house, it might be time to get reacquainted with a proper rwd sports car again.
The quality of this video is genuinely at the same level as Clarkson-era Top Gear. Loved watching it.
Especially the way the 86 drifts into view in front of the GTI at the steering circle.
That's almost the highest level of compliment a car review can get and i think Jason Cammisa deserves it.
100 agree!!!!!!
Come on, its way better than TG! It's TG level production with an actual journalist, passionate and professional driver. 10x better than Clarkson ever was. Go Jason and Anthony!
On par and better at some. Less sarcasm, which is good
I've never seen a car review that educated me, entertained me and wowed me with driving stunts, angles and shots like this before. Holy moly. Subbed!
Have you never watched BBC Top Gear in the last 20 years?
@@nunyabusiness896 Hush now, top gear barely had seconds worth of sideways content, they had to hire Chris Harris eventually after he's been doing this for at least a decade, that in itself shows you don't have any clue what you're talking about. Hagerty is investing in the right people.
@@user-hr2zy7ct8h The fact that you're talking about Chris Harris means you're talking about the wrong Top Gear. I'm talking about the old-new Top Gear that started a little after 2000 with Jeremy Clarkson, James May, and Richard Hammond who are now on the Grand Tour. Once Chris Harris joined the show was long dead.
@@nunyabusiness896 So when did any of these 3 ever perform driving stunts? Besides the scenes with the stig there wasn't much of that in any of the seasons at all so you're making a bad comparsion.

His face is pure happiness when going threw the turns near the end of the video. Very well done!
The way this is filmed is exactly like a commerical!!! It makes the car look as cool as possible, it makes you WANT it.
Talking about spiritual successors- this show feels like the spiritual successor to the Grand Tour! Outstanding job Jason & crew.
comparing this content to the Grand Tour is an insult IMHO. absolute no useful content in the Grand Tour or Top Gear. yeah yeah.. down vote all you want. Those two shows are entertaining but just worthless on its technical merits.
The Grand tour doesn't hold a candle to this. Great job guys!

Jason is at the moment my favourite car journalist, he is such a good story teller that he makes complex physics childs play to comprehend. Well done squire.
I literally said this exact comment to my car buddy just now. He is so freaking good.
He taught me torque vectoring with a wheelchair. I thought to myself, "Well, this is the best way anyone will ever teach me how torque vectoring works."
Jason is the reason I splurged and bought a GT350. Motor trend should have kept him
Never thought a car review would be so fun to watch...you guys made a great job at holding viewers attention the whole time...
This production quality is unreal. Hagerty this video was flawless. Keep this coming.
Dude the production on this one is insane!
@That1Dude 44 shut up. You whine in every comment.
@That1Dude 44 Sure, keeping it naturally aspirated was THE way to go and i think toyota nailed it, when it first launched i didn't quite like the look but now its slowly grown on me. Also on the youtube channel of toyota gazoo racing they invited the godfather himself Keiichi Tsuchiya to give his impressions on the car which was soooo cool don't u think so?. Now lets talk about the golf, it might be a Hot hatch but the engineers at VW will always treat its steering like a grand tourer (which it is hence the name) making it bit on the numb side, nor do i think they'll get around the problem of understeer by stiffening up the rear coz lets be honest normal people like you and me (or atleast me) might not be able to correct an oversteer in a FWD. Oh and the MX-5, i don't have much if anything to say about it other than it being a damn good RWD car especially suited for touge.
Jason was the single best move Hagerty has ever made for marketing
I've never seen a video from this channel, I'm blown away. The production quality is through the roof.
Wow he can drive his ass off! Love the driving shots, they were done so well. This is my new fav car channel
This is the kind of car review that all automotive KZhead channels should aspire to - informative, engaging, insightful and entertaining as hell. Thank the arbitrary deities for Hagerty and Jason.
This simply oozes 00s Top Gear production style. As for the GR86, well, its front reminds me of the stunning Jaguar F type.
Too bad the rear looks like an insignia we had 10 years ago
I think he does them one better.
This was worlds better than top gear.
That is barely faster than a Mazda Miata. Yeah, not so much.
I thought it was really overdone.

I’m wowed by the quality of this review. Loved the shot of the GTI with the eventual 86 drifting in front of it 🤣
Seriously! That shot was amazing!
thats Humour enough, when GTI staring at 86 who took away his focus,😳😒😩
It's weird watching a review of such a great new car, only to read so many comments about how fantastic the video is. Who am I kidding, I was thinking the same thing. Despite the fact that the GR 86 appears to be a real godsend in this day and age, the video itself was what truly shined here. My compliments to everyone involved in making this one happen. Keep up the great work - just don't raise my rates in order to make that happen. (Kudos to Toyota and Subaru for getting this car right.)
This right here. Kudos to Toyota (and I mean TOYOTA and not Subaru, as Subaru obviously deserves credit for the tuning but their styling SUCKS) for getting the GR86 right, looks-wise. I never knew how to feel about any of the Toyobaru triplets....but now I know which one I'd buy.
@@mitchell-wallisforce7859 Considering that it's primarily a Subaru, I'd think that you'd have to credit both. As for myself, I've yet to buy any car with a freakin' infotainment system and don't see myself doing so anytime soon as long as I can still find excellent used vehicles that hold greater appeal to me than today's cars while also perfectly suiting my needs.
I often noticed that even on technical videos they only say things like the new intro is dope.... By the way I think in Europe we will be far away from 30.000.
@@Nordlicht05 probably depends on the market and exchange rate. I'd assume it'll slot in at about the same point as a camry v6 or 2L accord which in the states is equal to a mid trim GTI in price. Haven't looked at euro pricing in a while
@@VirtualGuth I wish Toyota would offer a cheaper version without the giant screen. In my opinion the new 86 is on the same level as the s2000 performance wise, but the s2000 is much more bare bones drivers car. Still, if I only had one of the two I’d still pick GR86 simply because it is much more practical.
El dialogo , edición y la estructura general de este video es majestuosa, gran trabajo!!
That bit from 7:10 to 7:19 was so great I had to rewatch it a couple times. Great video!
And I thought Motortrend's online reviews were tight (before they ditched KZhead)...THIS is what I would consider to be a benchmark for an automotive enthusiast review, with the right amount of humor mixed in. Jason, you have a natrual ability to convey WHAT makes a car feel good to drive, combined with scientific explainations for WHY a car feels good to drive. Bravo to you and your team sir, bravo.

This is the first car review video where I came for the cars and left wanting more VIDEO! Amazing quality editing and production on this one, bravo!
This is the greatest automotive film I've seen this year. Take a bow, Jason.
Jason looks like one of the few journalists actually having a good time.
He's not an industry cuck
Jason is by far my favourite motoring journalist from the States, there's just no one close to him. I'd put him first equal with Henry Catchpole as my all time favourites. Both people that appreciate cars for more than numbers in a brochure or fancy badges and both are amazing when it comes to conveying how a car *feels* when you're behind the wheel - is it stiff, smooth, does it roll, how does it balance under vs oversteer, how is the steering, gearbox and pedals and so on - so much more than someone showing off all the little practicalities or giving you headline power and acceleration numbers.
Good point
Absolutely amazing content, editing and cinematography. The benchmark in car reviews.
This is the best video about cars I've ever watched. Even the subtitles are good. Splendid job for everyone involved.
With the quality of this review I was shocked it was a straight to KZhead video and not copied from television. This was on the level of Top Gear production.
If I️ wasn’t already a Haggerty customer, I’d become one just for what they are doing with this channel. Whatever you are paying Jason, triple it. I’d gladly pay a few bucks more a year.

The Integra is being revived, hopefully we get a Icon episode for it in the future. Forget Motortrend, you don't need a subscription service for the best quality content.
Yea motor trend really went down the tubes

I'm contemplating paying for a month of Motortrend just to binge all of the new Mythbusters car segment. I feel like Roadkill has been on a sort of downward spiral ever since the original Hellcat swap into the Charger, in addition to maybe the leafblower turbo Nissan. Roadkill is good for ridiculousness, and I haven't heard very much ridiculousness happening there since they changed to the subscription model.
I don't know why people don't like ILX, it's awesome. It's basically current Integra.

Jason has a way of explaining things so comprehensively. And as far as comedy goes he always has memes or fun facts at hand and depending on the production he can fill a review with that.
