    • Actually that’s how Olympic jumpers used to jump back in the day. Shoes and landing on your back are techniques that give more height. But Olympic jumpers can still jump higher than themselves even without shoes or landing on their back.

I was shocked to see these brothers, especially the last jumper clear the bar with a frontal leap. Just imagine what they could do with formal high jump training using their original style. John Thomas and Valerie Brummel from Russia were my high jump idols. They mastered the Western Roll. I surely hope some university or track & field club would sponsor these brothers. His trainer said in 1991-1992 he got to 48" but he didn't say if it was standing or not. I kind of doubt it. MJ was unreal with his leaping but 48" is hard to believe. I'd say between 42" and 45" for MJ with a run up, and maybe he eventually got to 40" standing vert.

When I was young at my height of 5' 5", I could easily touch a 10 foot rim all the time and dunked. Now the ones in Africa doing the high jump, that was impressive.
