British heavy tanks were a series of related armoured fighting vehicles developed by the UK during the First World War.
The Mark I was the world's first tank, tracked and armed armoured vehicle, to enter combat. The name "tank" was initially a code name to maintain secrecy and disguise its true purpose. The type was developed in 1915 to break the stalemate of trench warfare. It could survive the machine gun and small-arms fire in "No Man's Land", travel over difficult terrain, crush barbed wire, and cross trenches to assault fortified enemy positions with powerful armament. Tanks also carried supplies and troops.
British heavy tanks are distinguished by an unusual rhomboidal shape with a high climbing face of the track, designed to cross the wide and deep trenches prevalent on the battlefields of the Western Front. Due to the height necessary for this shape, an armed turret would have made the vehicle too tall and unstable. Instead, the main armament was arranged in sponsons at the side of the vehicle. The prototype, named "Mother", mounted a 6-pounder (57 mm) cannon and a Hotchkiss machine gun at each side. Later, subtypes were produced with machine guns only, which were designated "Female", while the original version with the protruding 6-pounder was called "Male".
The Mark I entered service in August 1916, and was first used in action on the morning of 15 September 1916 during the Battle of Flers-Courcelette, part of the Somme Offensive. With the exception of the few interim Mark II and Mark III tanks, it was followed by the largely similar Mark IV, which first saw combat in June 1917. The Mark IV was used en masse, about 460 tanks, at the Battle of Cambrai in November 1917. The Mark V, with a much improved transmission, entered service in mid-1918. More than two thousand British heavy tanks were produced. Manufacture was discontinued at the end of the war.
ww1 tanks were badass
In just 100 years, from British-made rhomboid shaped manned tanks to unmanned tanks like the American Ripsaw M5, Estonian Type-X RCV and Themis, and Russian Uran-9, tank development is scary.
Your videos are very well done... the music brings it all together. Sure, one can find this footage online in other places, but the way you have put it together with the music is excellent. Well done. Keep em coming.
1707 union flag in the top left corner. LOL
GOD SAVE THE QUEEN
GOD SAVE THE QUEEN
Nice Video!!! I recommend doing a video on France during WWI or WWII. God bless!
Nice video but it should read colourised, as no colour moving image exists of WW1 Tanks. There are only two colour photos in existence, one of a wrecked MK1 and the other of a MKIV. Both images in poor condition and in need of restoration.
Simply put..... This is footage of the highest order
It really must suck being a crewman for one of those. Not only because it's hot, dark and full of fumes from the engines, but also the fact that navigating rough terrain and going up and down hills would mean you'd have to hang onto something unless you wanted to bang your head on something. Wouldn't that be a way to go? Your comrades die in battle against German tanks or artillery, and it's a thud to the temple or a cracked skull in your own tank that kills you.
That's a cool video! I just have one thing to say: this video also shows the ft 17 (the "little" tank with a turret), which is a french tank of this time. With it's design, he's considered as the first "modern tank" (the mark 1 is also a tank, and the first one, but modern tank have the model of the ft) I'm not discrediting the mark 1, just that I don't understand why this is a mark 1 tank video with ft in it, and a british flag on the screen while you show the ft ^^ still it's a great video ;)
NOT COLOR FOOTAGE - colourised
How do u make a video like this and put music over it (just wondering any tips)
excellent travail d'archives. Merci !
What's the name of the music?
Why on earth are there watermarks in the video? Ruins the entire thing. Isn't it supposed to be about the tank?
Nice. Thank you for nice content! More ww1)

My as wells start saying colored ww1 footage as Legendary colored footage of ww1
the mkIV.actually it was the first TANK that saw combat and was produced and the first recorded tank. but leonardo da vinci belive it or not made a sort of tank design but it was made from wood and steel and it had cannonballs for shooting but the da vinci tank NEVER was in combat and was NEVER built but you actually can make the da vinci tank by yourself altough i dont reccomend it
They have color camera during WW1, why the hell they won’t use it in WW2. Wtf
You're either trolling, or a full on pleb.
Music plz
The really first tank are the french tank Renault FT 17
Churchill_is_a_Legend even there you are slightly wrong as the first ever tank “little willie” originally had a domed turret but I was decided a turret would make it unstable hence why British tanks had their guns on the sides. However it is true to say that the French were the first to make the first tank with aModern layout, this is because of the fact that it: has a turret, has the engine at the rear and has just the driver at the front
The real 1st 1 was little Willie
Nah actually the British were the first to put it to concept the French were first to make one where the tank is recognisable to tanks of our time where you can spin turret full 360.
if i had these i'd travel back in time to fight the romans
And then run outta fuel
Footage from 0:30-0:38 is actually of An American FT17 Renault advancing over a hill with a couple American troops and was filmed by American soldiers
