I'm a Newcastle fan and believe me any sane supporter knows the clubs that are on the march - apart from ourselves, Villa and Brighton are serious contenders to upset the top clubs, the same clubs who not so long ago thought they were so much better than the rest they tried to form the Euro super league. Well run, well financed with top managers and the right character player groups happen to be the common denominator across the three mentioned clubs, and as with Leicester anything can happen.
Well said mate!

Simon has fast become one of the best pundits in football, and he's spot on here. I've long thought that Scotland's population size counts against the potential of its football clubs, similarly to countries such as Denmark and Belgium, and perhaps a way to generate finance and international interest those countries could form a league involving their top 6 or 7 clubs, perhaps even involving Ireland and/or Wales.
*The Best!*
To help the cash flow in Scottish football I think the league cup should scrapped for a uk cup. For a lot of teams playing Liverpool, United, Arsenal will bring in more money in a night than what they get in a season.
I was at the Hibs game, and the Hibs fans were brilliant. Got chatting to some and went for drinks with them the following night. One of the best nights of football I can remember.
Reality is that apart from Celtic and Rangers the rest of the scottish clubs would struggle to stay in League One
Liverpool 7 Rangers 1, Celtic & Rangers are only marginally better, big supports but sky money is next to nothing -
Struggle to stay in League 1, absolute pish. English fans are clueless.

@@Support-your-local-team Name five Scottish clubs that would survive in League 1, and I'll take your opinion seriously. As I said, clueless.
Simon is spot on with his analysis of the people who run the game in Scotland. Neil Doncaster is a vastly overpaid administrator, Stewart Regan former SFA chief was clueless. Barry Hearn was a guest speaker at a SFA event a few years ago and he hammered the then administrators, basically saying if they were working for him they'd be sacked. You can say what you like about Barry, but if you look at what he did when he got involved in snooker then darts, he found a way to drive up interest in those sports and attract new sponsors and better TV deals. Scottish football needs someone in charge with the same entrepreneurial skills and willingness to innovative as Barry has shown, sadly I don't think anyone like that would last 5 minutes as the Scottish football establishment would close ranks and hound him out for daring to challenge the status quo.
Spot on analysis. It wasn't too long ago that the SPL was able to attract players like Gascoigne. It's comparable to the Belgian or Swiss league in terms of top flight size, yet perpetual mismanagement has meant that the commercial deals haven't materialised
Why cant we just give Villa credit for getting the job done. We wouldn't be having this "money' conversation if it were Chelsea, who are far bigger spenders than Villa, and who never qualified for Europe.
To be fair though it is definitely finances. I saw people say “SPL farmers league” because of the result. Of course when you have a team who spends 100 million who are also very good comes up against a team with 1 mil spent its of course a unfair match up. It more highlights the imbalance of power in terms of financials that prem teams have vs European teams. Most teams in Europe don’t have anywhere near the money prem clubs have so there is definitely a huge imbalance there
Because Coutinho is payed more than the entire Hibbs squad.
Newcastle done the same to villa last week, and there was nothing said, but now they beat a team that couldn't survive in league one, and they are kings of Europe😂. Typical villa fans thinking they're something special.

Hibs are terrible in Scotland never mind Europe
Yet when Villa lose to a Chelsea/Man City type of team it's because they're far superior to us. Not because they have paid higher for players and wages. No one has ever mentioned that before...
The gap between Villa and City/Chelsea is nowhere as big as Villa and Hibs. It amazes me how ungrateful and ignorant the EPL fans are.
@@jacksonbow2766 you’re only judging us as as fans compared to what Scottish fans have to go through. My point is you may miss the media bias over here, the constant unfairness in games, the TV games given to Sky’s favorite clubs more often. It’s never ending. This is what I’m on about, we beat Hibs and it’s becomes a problem because of what we’ve spent, we lose to Man City 3-0 and it’s because they’re great…the fact their wages are a lot higher than Villa`s has NEVER come into it. They have not once said how good Villa played against Hibs.
@@milanvillan i understand you point. The 2 are not the same though. In Villa Vs Man City, there is a Cruiserweight going up against a Heavyweight. In Villa vs Hib, that Cruserweight is beating on a bantam weight. Villa did what was expected. If Man City played Hibs and won 5-0 the discussion would be the same right now. Man Cities revenue is 3x higher than Villas. Villas reveneue is 15x higher than Hibs. That is why people are talking like this.
One way to address the income gap is a uk cup competition open to teams in all four countries teams to take part in
Love the financial comparison linked to the result
One good thing about the SPFL that the EPL does not have anymore. It has not abandoned it true fans for money & dirty oil snake ownership & is cheap & easy a working class game.

Maybe the Scottish league and the women's league should unite to bring more money into their games because the standard of football is comparable, the women's league being slightly stronger imho.
Of course there was no contest! English and Scottish Premierships are poles apart when it comes to money! the game was over before it even started. Money buys success always has always will.
Scotlands best chance - summer football. Pros - Vast improved TV money (Many football fans, especially in England watch any football they can during the off season, no doubt they will put a few bets on the SPL instead of waiting for the MLS in the middle of the night for example), some may even take up a Scottish team to support (maybe a long shot that one). It will have a knock on effect for sponsors willing to invest more in clubs as sports channels look for something to fill the void during the off season in England and most of europe -Better fan attendance and product on the pitch. Nothing worse than -5 degrees in December/January. Pitches wont be waterlogged/blizzards at times. -Better grass roots attendances (same reasoning as above, kids playing 11 a side on FIFA instead of the real thing is insane but thats what its coming to especially in winter). Will naturally improve academy players with more time spent playing and not freezing/not turning up and less injuries On top of that, still far too many teams and too small leagues. Its designed for Rangers/Celtic to win every year due to playingeach other upto 4 times. If a team wins every game excluding against the Old Firm then they still dont win the league. Its 24 points to win against those two teams which is too much. If you play them only twice then it offers a small chance on current budgets of a one off upset from the likes of Aberdeen/Hearts
Edinburgh is also a city with 750,000 people. Two big clubs in Hearts and Hibs. It’s not a lot to go around is it?!
It is definitely mainly finances. Villa have spent 100 million to Hibs 1 million this season. I know that upsets happen and it isn’t all money but for Hibs with their miniscule spend to beat a club who’s spent 100 million this summer is nigh impossible. Also Villa put out a very good squad so there’s no chance there.
What I don't get is that this conversation only seems to crop up when an English team faces a Scottish team. I don't get this talk when English teams beat teams from Belgium, Sweden or Croatia, it's only a talking point when they play teams from Scotland
@@rohithraman6488because the people living in the UK don't care about Belgian teams, and at one time Scottish teams could be competitive with English teams. Is this hard to understand?

If Celtic played Villa they could have had a chance of getting a result
@@rohithraman6488 This is also true as well when they play teams from weaker leagues as well. It’s because of geography and history obviously lol 😂. Sure Celtic and Rangers could be part of the pyramid but the only incentive is money because they would have given up all the history and championships to be yo-yo club like Norwich if not mid table at best and all that “added value” you state because of their rich history of winning a mediocre Scottish league wouldn’t even exist
@@user-iy2vn9cv9u Celtic have won a European cup mate and been to two other European finals. Not talking about Scottish titles here talking about their success at European level which is what all big clubs are judged on. I would happily give up winning Scottish trophies every year to see us in a much more competitive football pyramid down south - domestic wins can become a little bit redundant down here at times I will admit and I would rather see us in a football system where we really have to perform at a much higher level consistently to try win things and then winning things would become even sweeter. Also mate, don’t compare Norwich to Celtic and Rangers - Burnley, Luton and Bournemouth are in the Prem mate and they are small clubs. Also, the crowds are an added value and having an Old Firm derby in the Prem would be incredible for the league, most heated derby in world football.

I read on here hibs could do a number on villa.look how it went l would just say Villa really do mean business .
the way fotoball is, the smaller countries that once were good are left behind. it's why the likelihood of Celtic, Ajax, Benfica, Porto, or Red Star and Steaua winning another European Cup is very slim. Scottish football is being left behind because it's just how football is and it's all geared towards the big European leagues. What can the SFA do, Jim? Apart from the Old Firm game, Scottish football doesn't have the appeal. where will they get the money from? Unless there is a British cup with Englisha dn Scottish clubs. If the Old Firm played Man United, Liverpool, Arsenal, Chelsea or Man City, and this replaced the League Cup in both countries, it would get lots of money and TV rights.
benfica are massive compared to celtic
Why can’t villa have nice things. Before the game everyone knows anything can happen over 90 minutes. Two teams like this play each other all the time, but just because we battered them all anyone can talk about is budget disparity, like the villa wasn’t hours away from going into administration.
Its not villas fault they just have to beat anyone in front of them, we're going to take it seriously considering its a chance for silverware and to play in a higher competition next season.

@@Viewer41one I'm not Scottish and two you did win the lottery when the premier league was formed. 80%plus of all players in the premier league are foreigners who only come for the money. Rangers got the champions league semi finals in 1992/93 when things were a more equal financial playing field. They could compete. I hope the Saudi league keeps buying premier league players and gives the English Premier league a taste of its own medicine.
@@Viewer41what you dont understand is that the TV money is for British TV networks who share the air time. They are naturally going to go for bigger audience with England dwarfing Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland combined. Therefore, they will get more TV money and as the years have gone by its led to an exponential effect. At least Croatia, the Dutch etc get their own TV networks. Your arguments about Croatia doesn't answer their club level problems. Not denying Scotlands FA have been an absolute shambles over the years and not helped the situation. Scotland being a small nation in a cold wet location and trying to play every sport out there (hows the Croatian Rugby team doing for example?) as well as the reduction on council football pitches (thousands of them scrapped) and kids now all hiding in doors playing computer games. Scotland needs summer football, its the only hope to bring more money back in and improve grass roots level interest)
As a Celtic fan i really do wish we could come down and compete in England. Start in the Championship, i don't care. Or Scottish football should merge with the sacandanvian leagues to create a North Atlantic Premiership or something.
You would have to start in the lowest league unfortunately mate..can't just get thrown in the 2nd tier when clubs like Wrexham Notts County etc have to work from bottom
Many years ago I was given a questionnaire at Villa Park asking whether Scottish teams should join the English leagues. At that time I didn't mind. I have family in Ireland 🇮🇪 and really like the country and the people but I'm sorry friend the thought of having certain Celtic supporters with their lack of respect to Remembrance Day it would have to be a no now. It's a shame because even a British cup could be a good replacement for the league cups.
like saying belgium should merge with holland nope not going to happen
If it was true about financial clout then Leicester wouldn’t if won the prem league abd shock wins for Wigan in the cup to make a few would never happen , complete tosh Gerard villa would of struggled and never of played with such dominance
It is financial clout mate. Manager makes a bit of difference but reverse those 2 managers last night and Villa still cane Hibs. You will never appreiate the gravity of a club with no money going up against clubs that can out spend your whole nation 2x over in 1 window until you don't have any. There are loads of other rhings, like Skys qualityy in their coverage of the 2 leagues for instance. Skys games for the EPL and Championship are miles ahead in quality compared to the crap shows they punp out for Scottish games they cover. The build ups are often shorter also on the Scottish games. UK governement spent the last few years pumping hundreds and hundreds of millions of ££ into English grassroots facilites but spending bugger all on Scotlands facilities, Wales and N.Irelands facilities. The English seriously do not know how lucky they are.
shup up about finances villa never had big finances when they won the European cup get over it
Play off champions… they are still cups
Rangers and Celtic should of left the SPL a decade ago. Basically, the "solution" would be to start at the bottom and work towards tge EPL. In the meantime, Scotland can work with the reality of not competing but maxing out their players potential with a smaller well ran league
Rangers and Celtic are big clubs, playing in English football they would become a threat to the so called top 6, their crowds would be massive, and with money I'm sure they could be amongst Britain's elite even competing for the chamions league. For that reason they wouldn't get into English football leagues, too much of a threat.
@@Martin-hc6xc not a threat at all liverpool 4 won European cups in the 1970s, when they were on equal parring
What these Scottish fans don't understand when they throw the money argument around is this.... The Premier League has more money because its MORE entertaining than the Scottish Leagues, where only 2 teams have won the Title since 1986! 🚜 🚜 🚜🚜🚜🚜🚜🚜🚜 🥱🥱🥱🥱🥱🥱🥱🥱🥱🥱 😴😴😴😴😴😴😴😴😴😴 It wasn't like we randomly won a lottery. If Aberdeen, Hibs and Hearts were taken over by rich people willing to invest, then it'd be a 5 horse race every year and would be more exciting, leading to better TV deals and so on. As opposed to Celtic winning 9/10 and Rangers 1/10 🥱😴🥱😴🥱😴
It's a population thing you nugget! You have to sell TV rights for a large audience. The vast majority of TV money comes from British broadcasters. I can watch the Prem here in the US for virtually free as it's not as big as you think, fella!
The EPL is a bit of a one horse race these days tbf
Premier League has had the same number of winners since 2016 as the Scottish Man City have won 5 out of the last 6 titles. And they have also won a fair number of cup trophies in those years
@@oscarramage95 wow 6 years hahhaha
Celtic and Rangers are Championship level, the rest are League 1 and 2.
Rangers and Celtic need to join the English pyramid
Rangers yes ,Jimmy Saville fc NOOOOOOOOO. 21 ex employees convicted of child abuse and sing about the IRA 24/7
No thanks, we don't want them.
Why?
Celtic wouldn't want to join us... and we wouldn't want them.
They wouldn't join the EPL, atm they are guaranteed European football because other than each other there is no competition.
The big countries have had their turn in the sun with the money. Its the Saudis turn. Don't cry when they turn and bankrupt teams like Newcastle overnight.
Hibs would smack teams like Everton and Sheffield United to be fair.
Anybody could beat Everton at the moment. If they don't get relegated this season I will be very surprised
In Scotland there's just no money to be made apart from attendances which apart from celtic theRangers & hearts are poor. The big two get grief yet these fans don't turn up for their own games to generate cash for their clubs to grow. I enjoy going to hearts hibs Aberdeen & would love them to become stronger which makes my team Celtic get tested every week which leads to better European performances & more interest in Scottish football which then leads to more cash for our game but it has to start at home & our own fans turning up for their own clubs.
Rangers the only formidable scottish side in Europe this century
Formidable? That's a bit of a stretch mate.
true cos celtic jimmy saville are not
There’s a way to improve the Scottish game because the SFA and SPFL have failed to anything meaningful to grow the clubs and the brand of the clubs and leagues. The way to improve the Scottish Leagues is to amalgamate them with English leagues. How would it work? Very similar to the way the conference leagues work, north, south and combined conference leagues and promotion/relegation to the ‘British’ Premier League would work in the same way they do in the English conference leagues, meaning Scottish clubs could thrive. Drawbacks are what happened to the independence of the FAs? European places would limited to what the EPL has now, making it harder for clubs to qualify. Thoughts? I’m all for it. Aberdeen, Dundee clubs, Edinburgh clubs, Inverness or Elgin away, etc!
It sounds good but a dream too far away only if the Scottish FA & English FA worked thing's out and sat down & talked but they rarely do. There is always talks about a Cross Borders League like what Belgian and Dutch people want too do but goes nowhere. Like Neil Lennon says England would veto the idea like the Super League. All the Scottish young talent want too go & play in the EPL or Europe better money and quality & kids watch Manchester City vs Wolves more than Inverness CT VS Ross county.
no thanks
@@bonysminiatures3123 why not?
@@Ballsdeepsport its like saying scotland should merge with england to have a chance of getting into the world cup
@@bonysminiatures3123 Nothing of the sort. If Scottish teams want to be able to compete, combining leagues would be a benefit to Scottish clubs beyond the Old Firm.
