Volkswagen Debuts Sleek ID. CODE Concept, Outlines Electric Future For China
Volkswagen is going all-in on electric vehicles for the Chinese market. At the 2024 Auto China show in Beijing, the German automaker unveiled the striking ID. CODE concept car, providing a glimpse at its future EV design language and technology specifically tailored for China.
The ID. CODE is a large electric SUV with a sleek, Gran Turismo-inspired design defined by smooth, flowing surfaces. The exterior can even function as a display for advanced light projection and augmented reality systems. Step inside and you're greeted by a cutting-edge cabin that blends the physical and virtual worlds into one immersive experience enabled by autonomous driving capability.
But the ID. CODE is just the start. By 2030, Volkswagen plans to have 16 ID-badged electric models on sale in China including five vehicles from the new ID.UX lifestyle sub-brand like the forthcoming ID.UNYX targeted at younger buyers. Alongside its expanding MEB-based EV lineup, VW will also introduce electrified versions of existing nameplates and launch several new plug-in hybrid models with over 100 miles of electric range.
To accomplish this product onslaught, Volkswagen is accelerating research and development in China. By year's end, its Anhui tech center will employ 3,000 engineers working on EVs, self-driving systems, connectivity features, and more. The brand is also leveraging partnerships with local tech companies like autonomous driving startup Horizon Robotics.
Volkswagen is even developing a new electric vehicle platform specifically for China dubbed the CMP (China Main Platform). At least four affordable CMP-based EVs are slated to arrive by 2026, underlining VW's commitment to provide Chinese customers with compelling electric options across every segment and price point.
With an alluring new design direction previewed by the ID. CODE and big investments in products, tech development, and local manufacturing, Volkswagen is clearly positioning itself to be a major player in China's electric future. The brand that has found decades of success selling gasoline-powered cars to Chinese buyers is now setting its sights on leading the EV revolution there too.
