Muhammad Ali vs Ken Norton II
-
The second of three meetings between Muhammad Ali and Ken Norton. Having lost the first fight, Muhammad Ali trained himself into probably the best shape of his life, and he needed it. The winner of this fight would be ranked no. 1 and could thereby demand a fight with the world champion, George Foreman.
-
Their records at the time
Muhammad Ali: 41-2
Ken Norton: 30-1
Unbelievable Ali and Norton had just fought In March of 1973 when Norton broke his jaw. Their rematch was 6 months later you will never see that happen again in the sport of boxing. These were true glatiators.
you could but the politics are beyond. These managers and promoters got too much invested to take these risks.
Jamil McCoy True. Ali had great recuperative powers, which I think were enhanced by his desire to regain the number one spot in which had now become arguably the most competitive heavyweight era ever.
thats what made ali great and he always gets even and shuts everybody up he wasnt suppose to beat foreman foreman killed frazier twice and norton
@Rick Quicker Norton did not do anything to win the third fight he really did not.
EXACTLY - NO REAL LONG TIME OUT - 6 MONTHS LATER KEN NORTON AND ALI WERE AT IT AGAIN !
I am blessed.I was at this fight with my Grandfather, who passed not long after.God Bless Esteban and God Bless Ali and Norton.
Sure your proud of that ticket stub.
How old are you now ?

I saw this fight on Pay-for-View, most people thought Norton won the fight but Ali pulled it out. I'm from Louisville, Ky. and the whole city as well as the World gave Mahammad Ali a wonderful send off. Ali's funeral procession that went by Ali's childhood home was really something to see. It was estimated that some 150,000 people lined the streets to watch Ali go by. People were putting flowers on the coffin car, running up touching it and praying. Just a wonderful and beautiful send off for "The Greatest of All Time"!!
Pay-per-view Was a not around until 1981 and this fight was in 1974 I believe
Michael-Paul Ware it was in 1973
Michael-Paul Ware Fights were on close circuits which include paying.. check Ali Foreman post fight interview by David Frost when he said to Ali: “this proves that you can make commercials on close circuit televisions just like on real televisions”

I thought Ali was the clear winner. He got the first 6 and the last 2.
This man dance from round 1 til round 12 unbelievable
He had to use everything to keep Norton off him and Ali used a whip like left jab also Norton was a major nemesis of Ali for real
He did go after Ali like with abandonment and reckless Ali fought the third fight better because he really tried to get to Norton
Recklessness
That was a brutal seventh round for Ali how did he make it out of that other than toughness and guts
One of the few fighters that Ali showed respect for
The first 6 round Ali put on an amazing boxing performance. Actually one of his best. his ring craft and defense was air tight. U can tell he really took Norton serious this fight. beautiful check left hooks when he was cornered and right hands in the center of the ring. great stuff. And people have the nerve to say Ali couldnt really box. Smh
Someone says Ali couldn't really box? If Ali couldn't box, who could? Just sayin'...
@@elliota.1063 exactly lol
@Freddie Mercury theres a ton of people who say that its very annoying but the guy in my pic is Oscar Gamble
People who say he couldn't box are probably people who don't box.
Agreed. I gave Ali the 1st 5 rounds, with the 6th round even. Kenny won 7, 8, 9, 10th. 11 round even, Ali wins the 12 round. 6 Ali 2 Even and 4 Norton.
The last round was very important. It was a very close fight but Ali controlled the phase and landed most scoring blows. Both of them are legends.
That Last Round Waz Epic. He really pulled out his 60s era on dat azz
Word up
It was war like Mirk Ward vs The Late Arturo Gatti Great fight
This is by far the best of the 3 Ali Norton bouts
Scored it 7-5 Ali. What a fight. First 6 rounds was a boxing masterclass from Ali. But then Norton slowed Ali down with pressure, jabbing with him to get on the inside and letting ruthless bodyshots to go to slow Ali down and make the last 6 rounds a fight!
Oh man I love this fight. Sometimes when I finsh all the videos on the internet, I come back and watch it, and even tho I know whats gonna happen, I still get excited and gassed during the fight. LEGENDARY NIGHT
I’ve gotta say the amount of energy Ali had in the final round was absolutely extraordinary he so damn tired before that round and that amount of energy in that last round helped him get the victory.
He's an INCREDIBLE athlete and competitor!!!!!!!
Man, he was tired as hell, but he faked it to reduce kenny's morale and yeah, that worked, he didn't had much energy, he just was efficient in the use of energy in the last round, Show your oponent in the beginning of 12th round that you are up for it, and he will think you are unbeatable
I remember at the time thinking it showed his great will. Of course he was deprived of over 3 1/2 years of his prime, came back slower, and he had to adjust.
@@mizofanyea they robbed him of his prime crooked people
Ali got 90% of his prime physique back here..
Prime Ali was in the 60s and early 70s but unfortunately the punishment for not participating in military service robbed him of his glory days
Looks better than his 60s physique to me. Slightly less defined but bigger, stronger and more balanced overall.
Ali started blood doping and taking Novocain injections for this fight and continued doing so until the end of his career, this is described by Norman Mailer in the 1975 book "the greatest" Ali probably would have lost this fight if he hadn't.
@@carlmurray1781 yep his knuckles were hurt really bad and I think he used Painkillers in this fight..
Rest in peace Ken Norton an ornament to the fight game
when ali said he was more tired than usual because of his age. you could hear the sadness in his voice. god bless the greatest.
Randall Denison nooooooo
That and bc he hurt his right hand in the 6th. That made it even more difficult and a much harder fight for Ali. Not making excuses but you can tell he didn’t use his right hand much and with force like in the early rounds.
@Randall Denison I think Marciano would be KO´d by Foreman and had a very bad time against a Prime Frazier, Tyson, Ali...he never fought against great Prime Heavyweights.
@Randall Denison Get well soon loool
Antares Telling I’m Italian and I know that Marciano isn’t even a top 5 ATG HW, his best opponent was a 37 year old Joe Louis who wasn’t even 1/4 as fast or powerful as he used to be and Rocky almost got his ass kicked by small heavyweights (Walcott and Charles), any top 10 HW would beat Marciano.
Damn.Ali looks like he got in his time machine
He was in superb condition
ali was so crafty.he knew how to get out of the way.tie his man up.he was brilliant
8-4 for Ali. This is one of those fights that really shows how much people don't understand the sport. Norton threw a lot of huge punches in that fight, that did not land. It had to be at least 90% of his hooks that landed directly on Ali's elbows or gloves. Ali slows down because he is not in his prime anymore and chose to try to dance around for 6 rounds, it has nothing to do with any damage done by Norton. It was extremely rare to see a clean punch landed by Norton, whereas Ali's big punches were completely flush. All of that, plus the fact that Ali landed much more and jabbed Norton in the face for 12 rounds makes it a pretty easy fight to judge.
Thank you!
Are you serious Robert..this is Ali in decline..Lennox Lewis wouldn't have put a glove on Ali in his prime and would have been beaten easily..Lewis didn't have a fraction of Ali's stamina, chin, ring craft, speed or movement..Ali would have outpointed him unanimously without a problem..he might even have stopped him on a TKO..Lewis got outboxed by bloody Frank Bruno for 6 rounds until he landed a lucky punch..
Karl Hughes thank you!

I wish Ali trained for all his fights in the 70s like he did for this fight. Ali to me was at his best here and in Zaire.
mark lee hy
mark lee a focused Ali is scary.
i always say had Ali trained for the first fight with Norton. Ali wins by a landslide
Ali was focused also in the Frazier 1974 rematch and first fight against Bugner. 1973 1974 were his best years post-exile. top conditioning
Ali was better in the sixtys
this was an impressive & important win in his 2nd post nam stage. he proved a lot here. he knew he had to avenge the 1st fight to prove his superiority in the ranks. yet, he also knew, to do that he would have to really commit training wise. this was a great team effort on his part & his training staff. It gave back to him confidence. notice he was able to also get on his bicycle when needed throughout the fight. he was also able to set up good power combinations, esp late in the 11th. It set the confidence stage for himself that he could get to the level he needed to take out foreman, wh/ of course he did.
very close fight..with two Great Warriors. Respect to Both
Wolfblack7 I agree very close fight...yet Muhammad in my personal view won by one round or two rounds ahead of Kenny.
Ali was so great !! He had to WIN this fight !! Ali also had the one and only " deep tank ! " Spirit and Heart UN matched ! * I am 55 now and remember these now classic's so well !!
True. This fight was what set up everything to come. A loss would have changed the landscape big time. Great point. He really had to WIN this fight.
Rip two great heavy weight fighters
Well, I’m 64 and my memory always reverts back to this golden years of boxing, as Ali has always been my favorite heavyweight fighter, with due respect to Joe Louis and Big George Foreman.

The Ali, Frazier, Shavers, Quarry, Lyle, and Norton era was very special. All these guys were true warriors. Unfortunately Ali, Frazier, and Quarry stuck around a few fights too long. I had this fight 6 - 5 & 1 even in favor of Ali.
Forman..
Same I had it 6-5-1 as well this is how I scored it: Ali: 1, 2, 3, 4, 6, 12 Norton: 7, 8, 9, 10, 11 Tie: 5
I wasnt born yet during this fight. Boxers that time are the toughest. I cant say who really won this fight but learned enough why Ali is one of the greatest. Will gonna watch more of his fights.
46:09 Ali hits Norton to the face at least 3 times, Chick Hearn: None of those punches landed, gtfoh Laker stan.

Agreed. That was an incredibly stupid thing of him to say.
Only the last one landed and not that hard. A lot of people can't see how amazing Norton's defense was.

7-5 for Ali no questions asked IMO. Great fight though
@eric Dubwaaa he defo won the first and 3rd meeting. Personally thought Ali won the 2nd fight. He put it out of question for me when he won the 12th and finished the fight on top.
@eric Dubwaaa No he didn't he lost all three. Even the first one.
@eric Dubwaaa Norton lost all three fights. Ali made Norton as he did to all who fought him.

ManofSteel3720 I had it 7-5 for Ali, but it definitely wasn't easy, even by Ali's own admission
I agree Ali won it, not easily though, Norton was tough.

yes he has problems with fighters fight in crouch he dont like it to the body hes been blessed to take a punch
Robert Horton Ali clearly won this fight, but the third fight was much closer
w/ ali dancin', jabbin', and punchin' the way he did in this fight...the only way norton gonna win this one was either k.o. or t.k.o.
@eric Dubwaaa No they didn’t. Norton won the first and 3rd fight, but he certainly lost this bout. The fight was close, but Ali stole that last round. Just barely, but he did. Regarding the Frazier fights, Smokin Joe never got robbed. Everyone knows that he beat Ali the first time around, then lost the 2nd and 3rd fight. It’s common sense dude.
Ali by 7-4-1.....No doubt. That small left jab doing the damage.

That wt made him great he fought these beasts back to back
Ali was so cool. He was a true artist 👊
The two announcers were pitiful
Way better than Cosell anyways who can never shut up, at least these guys called some shots

"GOOD left hook by Kenny Norton!" Barely touch Ali wtf! 10:20
Poor left hook of Norton which also ddnt work against Foreman
Great fight between the two legends. Much respect for those two warriors.
Ali was awesome in this fight and Frazier 2. In shape and sharp as hell.
it cracks me up when people say Norton won all 3 fights...ali CLEARLY won THIS fight.just as he clearly LOST the first fight..Norton used the frazier strategy of applying constant pressure throughout the whole fight..continuously pursuing Ali but that doesn't mean he won..he scored big from time to time but the first 6 rounds of the fight ali was in control and then he won the later rounds to secure the win..
house banks it was a draw
I don't believe Norton CLEARLY won all 3 fights (I haven't even seen the 3rd fight to be honest), but I thought he won the first fight and this fight. The second fight could've gone either way, but I scored it 7-5 for Kenny Norton.
NORTON AND FRAZIER were friends and Eddie Futch handled him here...they both gave Ali the most trouble but he was 4-2 vs them both ! Ali was THE KING of the Ring Jack ! + that 3.5 years off, 4 SURE ruined him but he stood up for what was RIGHT and won that WAR ! I loved him even more 4 that ! ..I am now 55 and remember so well..Ali would have been 50-0 and that's my humble opinion !
Ali won this fight by a mile! He landed so many as opposed to Norton who just charged but hardly threw many punches and missed so many of them. Were the judges blind?
yep they wre favouring norton
Not sure about a mile but Ali definitely outboxed Norton no doubt about it
Not by a mile. You must be blind. Ali won this one, but it was close.
i concur, its about hits landed, and they were more effective communicatively, norton was strong, but he lost, all he proved is that he one strong mf ha
@@briancontreras9317 i watched the whole fight and had Ali 7-4 with 1 even
Ali learned the hard way during their first fight that He had to work harder on His Physical Conditioning.
Good point: Ali's wide range of skills and the HUGE monetary payouts of a pre-NFL dominated sports culture kept him going WELL past his prime, but the embarrassment of that 80' fight vs Holmes had more to do with him having to drop a lot weight with thyroid meds than it did with him being totally without boxing skill. While boxers without a LOT of punching power (like Ali) are reluctant to come in light, there ability is tied into mobility, and after @ Round 6-8, that is very much about conditioning.
one of the all time great fights. Ali won but ken was great too :)
Fantastic archive.
Despite what he said in interviews Ali in his prime around 1966/67 would have cut Norton to pieces in no time like he did to Cleveland Williams..Ali liked Ken Norton and supported him in Norton's title fight against Foreman so he was being generous when he said that..nobody beats prime Ali..this is Ali in decline and he still beats a really good opponent.
Prime Tyson (with K. Rooney, no drugs, alcohol and hookers), Bowe, Holmes, Lewis, Holyfield, prime Liston (no dive this time), Klitschko brothers and even Wilder - they all beat him. Ali's the most overrated boxer in history.
Michael Trumph you must be a certified troll. Cant touch ali
sadly true Time, is the Greatest threat to the Human Body RIP Ali!!!
Funny you say that because I'm seeing the same Ali vs. Cleveland Williams, same movement, same strategy. Just a better fighter in front of him.
.
scored it 7/5 ali rds 1,2,3,4,6 9,12 norton 5,7,8 10, &11. 11th rd. was very close. ali took the 6th &12th big. norton the 8th big. i scored 0 2pt. rds. good effort by norton, but ali had more ring generalship & landed more head shots & combos
I Had Norton winning the fight in my head. I Think it was overlooked because of how much faster Ali was moving because in the middle rounds, Ken was connecting his jab and being more accurate. I Do think Norton gassed out at the end there and that could be a good reason to give it to Ali, but this fight was a lot closer than people say. Ali's endurance and determination is insane though, i cant imagine the exhaustion one would feel after fighting a full 12 rounds against a grown man trained to punch your face in.
Uhh yeah I know
Man that ring side announcer was blind... Ali was having target practice through out the fight. Norton did land some big shots, but Ali shots was so quick they couldn't see them. Round 9 he rocked him bad. Round 11 he touched him a few times. And round 12 Ali took over and clubbed Norton several good shots. Them dam announcers cant see as good as Stevie Wonder.
Isiah Quillian just think about what the Ali before 1968 does to Norton
I know what you mean the commentators were idiots
Right on!!!!!!! I guess that lightning-quick punch in the eleventh was just TOO much of a blur for those morons to see, kind of like the one he hit Liston with!!!!!
Muhammad Ali and Ken Norton are legendary 👑👑☝🏻
Prime Ken Norton plus he used smelling salts and Ali edged the victory while not being in his prime ..Ali the greatest
Good fight but Ali clearly won this. The third fight was way closer.
hbk711x I'd be great to be able to watch this together and debate the rounds. I saw the fight when it happened originally and believed there was an excellent chance that Ken won. It is strange that on subsequent reviews I still get the feeling the judges may change their minds this time. I didn't have this feeling on the second fight. It was a clear win for Muhammad. Ultimately, it is what it is and it is done. Winner: Ali.
yes ali clearly won this fight.
I scored this fight 7-5 for Kenny Norton, but it was close and could've gone either way. But Norton was constantly trapping Ali in the corner and nailing him with all kinds of punches.

The PBS Ali special only showed bits and pieces of this magnificent fight and I said "KZhead, here I come!" 💯🥊🏆
The fact that Foreman destroyed both Frazier and Norton in the 2nd round before he lost to Ali is an indication of how great Foreman was in his prime. Ali mesmerized Foreman in Zaire, and even though Ali was years past his prime by then he was able to psych Foreman out before George stepped into the ring. It was as unlikely an upset as Buster Douglas beating Tyson.
Right idea, wrong comparison. Douglas was not even close to the quality of fighter Ali was, and Tyson was no longer in his prime. Foreman was with Ali
Good fight ...RIP to both fighter's 😊❤❤👍
Good fight for both fighters! Ali wasn't just tired, his body absorbed some of the hardest blows from a great boxer! I'm sure anyone who has took some body shots like that woke up the next morning in pain! Great fight though!
Ali always got tagged by the left hook !! Here vs Norton a few times, of course Frazier in all 3 of those classic's and Henry Cooper dropped him on June 18th,1963, ( one month to the day after I was born )..I Love Ali and HE WAS THE TOUGHEST of them ALL !! They were ALL GREAT TOO ! Best era for the big men ever, 1970's !
No heavyweight in the history of boxing could have beaten Ali from the 60s. Could you imagine if Ali could have fought 1968- 1970 ?? It would have been awesome.
Tyson, Holmes, Lewis, Bowe, Liston - they all would have beaten Ali.
Michael Trumph Tyson wasn't mentally tough enough. Ali would completely destroy him psychologically. Holmes was basically Ali with less speed and more power. Would be a boring fight because they have a similar style. Bowe, though overlooked, is not Ali's match. It would be target practice for Ali. Ali at his peak is simply too fast for Bowe to catch. Lewis is the only one I give a chance because he was a technician in the ring. Great reach, accurate and good foot work. And Liston? Really, the guy who quit in the corner because he couldn't touch Ali is somehow going to beat Ali at his peak? Stop with that.
"Tyson wasn't mentally tough enough. Ali would completely destroy him psychologically." This is nothing more than complete nonsense that's been passed out as the truth in the last decade. When Tyson was with the Catskill team, he was completely focused and dedicated to boxing. He didn't care what opponent laid in front of him, he just beat them. He became a psychological mess only after he fired K Rooney, his marriage fall apart and he went to prison. "Holmes was basically Ali with less speed and more power. Would be a boring fight because they have a similar style." You forgot to mention that Holmes's technique was far superior to that of Ali. "Bowe, though overlooked, is not Ali's match. It would be target practice for Ali. Ali at his peak is simply too fast for Bowe to catch." Again, complete bullshit passed on as the truth. Bowe is more than fast enough to compete with Ali. Add to that the upperhand he had in technique and punching power and he's more than a match for Ali. "And Liston? Really, the guy who quit in the corner because he couldn't touch Ali is somehow going to beat Ali at his peak? Stop with that." Liston took a dive, he didn't quit. There's a big difference between the 2.
1967 to 1971 would have been Muhammad's prime years.
Ali beat Liston though - twice too.
By any chance is there any footage of the preliminary fights from this night? My grandfather was on this card

Ali never quite figured out how to hurt Norton but he clearly dominated the fight on points.
On the other hand, Norton sure figured out how to hurt Ali because that was a clear ass beating. If it wasn’t for Ali having a great chin and Norton getting robbed by the decision…
Great efforts by both fighters Respect to them 👊🇹🇿🇺🇸
Ali was never the same fighter after his 3.5 year layoff, even when he trained hard here. He just didn't have the energy and reflexes. Ken Norton had a very high energy level and he kept loads of pressure on Ali. It's no mystery why he gave Muhammad so much trouble. A young Ali would not have had any trouble with Norton.
***** The point is, Ali was not the same fighter as he was before the 3.5 year layoff.
+Precise Presenter Age is individual friend some people age very fast comparing to others look at Ali adn Norton both at the age of 38 ali seemed 8 years older
+Precise Presenter Young Ali-1960s, was never "beaten up" , knocked down a couple of times, and any troubles were not the normal "pattern". Just look at the first round of Ali vs Patterson 1965 and see how incredible his dancing was, his ability to get "in and out" in a flash and almost cat like reflexes. Nice to have you, nuri. I actually had it 7-4 after the 11th, for Norton, 8-4. Bud Ferillo agreed with me but for two rounds he indicated he leaned even, one for sure (the 4th he saw even, I saw it as Ali's), one a bit later. All things being equal, I thought it was wrongly judged a split decision. You split the difference between what Furillo saw and I saw, and we arrive at what you saw (a judge, yourself), likely 7-5 if no even rounds.
Ali won by a landslide
nuri demir 5
Great fight and Kenny clearly took around seven and eight however, Ali did score more punches in all the other rounds and had a superb 12th round finish! Little has been said that Ali fought this fight with a damaged right hand and he didn’t use much of his right at all in this fight if anyone notices.
Norton like Frazier always brought the toughest fights for Ali. I'm still baffled to this day how Ali was able to survive a prime Foreman who took down both Frazier and Norton much easier than Ali. I agree the final round won it for Ali. I got to admit this was one of the best condition prepared fights in the 1970s that Ali came into along with the Foreman fight and the third Frazier fight in Manila.
I love the old announcers. They were so animated
I don't get how judges scored fights back then. This was a competitive fight, but Ali won 7, at most 8 rounds. This should've been a unanimous win for Ali, not a split decision. Oh well. Great fight.
I agree with you
Ken Norton was Ali's best opponent. Every fight was close and every decision disputed.
Mohammad ali tem uma ressistencia que nunca vi igual fora do comum...mas devido a tantos golpes na cabeca ficou doente ainda novo...que deus o tenha rei do box.o melhor de todos:)
Almost all of the real heavy hits were delivered by Norton in this fight. Ali did a lot of jabbing, but he only hit him really hard a few times. IMO, Norton won this fight. the only reason they gave it to Ali was because he won the last round. up to that point, Norton had won the fight..
You speak the facts.
Ali won the last round and won the fight. He totally outboxed Norton and won this fight.
sfgnyy thats how i saw it
We're we watching a different fight lol
CRAIG MURPHY you can’t deny Ali’s win here
I never thought that this beautiful, lively young man was Muhammad Ali, who suffered from parking sickness and had difficulty moving calmly there
However the trilogy is debated, these were two warriors
