  • I'm also in Malaysia at the moment... Have been spending about £20 on average for a weekly shop for 2 people. Dreading the rocketing prices when I return to London next week 😢 Everything is about 5 times cheaper in Malaysia! Also possible to do ethical, non-zionst shopping in Malaysia e.g. I buy laundry stuff made in Malaysia or Indonesia, crisps from Brunei, Veggies from China, Navel oranges from Egypt etc

  • Actually you can get all the meats and vegetables much cheaper if you go to the weekly market (farmers market/wet market) which we call “pasar tani” here in malaysia. (You just need to know the location and what day it will be for your area. Because every neighborhood’s pasar tani can be on different day) Obviously the price will be cheaper compared to if you buy at supermarket. But of course if you shop at supermarket, it comes with the comfort.

    • You can also go to the ordinary market which we call Pasar Basah (wet market) which is held daily in the morning. We also have (Pasar Malam) night markets which is held weekly..for cheaper groceries, we also go to Econsave Supermarket. Some mini markets also sell fresh produce but they are a bit more expensive. And if you are from the T20 income bracket ( the rich group) they usually shop at Jaya Grocer, Village Grocer etc. For 100% halal grocery, we go to Mydin. There is no Non Halal section in Mydin. We also have the Pasar Borong (Wholesale Wet Market) which opens daily at very early in the morning (around 4am) n very cheap.

    • I think we should let Ms Saira gets herself acclimatised to the whole shopping experience at this level first. She needs to find similarities between Malaysia and UK before embarking to that phase of what the locals do. Pasar Basah or wet market…ours are not for the faint hearted. The smell, the whole market thingy are not her to experience yet. We locals still find wet markets kind of tummy churning and even more for foreigners like her. Dear Saira, avoid our wet markets at the moment until you are ready. You came from a sterile or “clinical” kind of environment in UK and our wet markets truly not yours to venture…just yet. Stick to your usual Aeon or Lotus for now yeah.

  • Actually those gift hampers usually companies buy for their customers or business partners, before Eid (during Ramadan). During Eid, when the Malaysian Muslims visit relatives and friends houses, we don't usually bring gifts. We will eat at the host house and we will give envelopes of money to the children (known as angpow).

  • Just a heads up.. check if what you buying has halal certification. Even though you are in malaysia not every single item is halal... even we as local check for halal certified in the pakaging before buying any item. For me if there are 2 of the same item and 1 has halal certification I will pick the one with halal one. The non halal section is normally for pork and alchohol stuff. All normal daily item/groceries you still need to check the label, Unless you are buying form a propper local wet/dry market. If its not from local malaysia , check for halal cert

  • Malaysia has our own meat industry but we don't cut our beef/meat like the western did. If you buy local meat in the local wet market, farmer's market or night market, they did not not cut like sirloin/tenderloin etc etc. The local cut is called "batang pinang" - tenderloin and other cut its just called daging pejal or daging no 1 or no 2. We Malaysian dont ask for sirloin in our local market
