  • If you think about it, Anna's win isn't much of a surprise if you do a process of elimination. Holly was already solidified for best actress and the academy never honors the same actor or actress twice on the same night. Emma won an Oscar the year before for Howard's End and back to back Oscars are rare. Fearless was not a well known movie and it was released earlier that year. That was the only Oscar nomination it got so Oscar voters probably didn't bother seeing the film. As for Winona, her movie was not very popular either and it was also released earlier that year. Since Anna was in a movie that had several Oscar nominations, voters probably wanted to see the movie before voting for the different categories. They were surprised by Anna's performance and decided, wow she's pretty good, I'm voting for her.

    • _The Age of Innocence_ was released in *October 1993;* _The Piano_ the following month. Also, *Winona Ryder* was favored to win that night. She had won the *Golden Globe,* which at the time was the only main precursory award. The first *SAGs* were handed out in *1995;* the first *Critics' Choice* in *1996.* Though *BAFTA* has been around since *1949,* it did not become an *Oscar* predictor until *2001,* when it moved from *April* to *February,* just before the *Oscars.* Prior to that, the *BAFTAs* were pretty anticlimactic, because they used to take place _after_ the *Oscars.*
