I read Glenn Close's role in Fatal Attraction also gave her a lot of popularity too. Most of it because this was her 4th nomination in the decade.

I know she really wanted to get the Oscar because she probably figured it might be her only chance and as it turned out, it was. She never did get another movie role as good as the one she had in Anna and that is kind of sad.

Cher was my very first celebrity crush when I was just 4 years old and saw her on The Sonny and Cher Comedy Hour. Mom watched the show regularly, and after noticing Cher, I would pester my parents asking them when the show was coming on TV again. Loved their music as well.
Paul Newman even oozes charm, confidence and charisma when he's presenting an Oscar!
He showed up to present, but wasn't there the previous year when he finally won. I heard he decided not to show up because he thought he wouldn't win anyway.
He was like 63 at this ceremony and still a gorgeous man.
This is exactly why I love Cher. To me, she is the definition of “what doesn’t kill you makes you stronger” and she’s the embodiment of triumph, perseverance, and strength. I look up to her so much and hope to one day have the amount of courage, strength, and joy in living that she has.
Cher was great and she deserved it. She deserves the credit. But Glenn Close just had an even better performance in my opinion. Glenn NEVER won an Oscar. It's a fucking crime. She truly is one of the best actresses ever!

I’m a big fan of Meryl Streep, Glenn Close, and Holly Hunter….but I have to say that Cher was pretty extraordinary in this movie. Of course Meryl and Holly have won Oscars, but it’s criminal that Glenn has never won, especially for Albert Nobbs (I didn’t think too highly of Fatal Attraction; revolting story, and Glenn was over the top).
Glenn Close’s performance in Fatal Attraction was absolutely iconic. People still talk about the “bunny boiler” to this day. Cher is fantastic, but Glenn Close deserved it more this year.

It's unbelievable but I think the feel-good aspect of Moonstruck was a deciding factor even though Close's performance was unquestioned. I've always loved Cher's acting chops, as most comedians really do rise to task of serious Oscar worthy performances. In a perfect world the 1987 Best Female Actor should've been a tie.

Also the reaction from the crowd makes me kinda tear up. She has always been and under dog. Singing acting TV whatever. So Its nice to see people except you and a few be happy for some one. Cher should have gotten a nomination and win for Mask! Glenn Close should have gotten this, her performance was terrifying and sad at the same time! Despite the changing of the ending her performance is still amazing to this day!

These comments are trying to reduce Cher into nothing. I've watched both Moonstruck and Fatal Attraction and both Cher and Glenn were amazing in it. They played 2 very different characters. I think in this situation both were equally deserving and it was a matter of taste. Maybe it should have been a tie.
Glenn had the misfortune playing a psycho and her character so despicable. The Academy found it difficult awarding an Oscar for playing such a character. That was the difference.
