Campfire Cooking. Dutch Oven Bread with Bacon Wrapped Halloumi Cheese. Cast Iron Cooking.
In this video, Maggie and I head out to the woods to do a spot of campfire cooking.
After collecting firewood and lighting a fire to get a good bed of embers, I make a simple bread dough. After needing and proving the dough, I bake the loaf over the fire in my Dutch oven. To go with the loaf, I then pan fry some delicious smoked Halloumi cheese, wrapped in bacon - delicious!
Thank you to Kim and Cathy for sending the Halloumi and thank you to ‘A chef in the woods with coco the border collie’ for the bacon wrapping suggestion.
I hope you enjoy the video.
Thanks for watching!

Erm.... Hold my step 2 I believe 🤣
I bought a dutch oven and am going to try this the first day my fiance and I go to the mountains. I've discovered a real love for cooking outdoors. There's something so therapeutic about it.
Love that dobro in the background. I love acoustic instruments. I used to go to as many bluegrass festivals as I could in the US. I was raised on old country music, not the stuff they call country today... I just bought an 8 quart cast iron Dutch oven. I've made bread for years at home...campfire cooking is another beast altogether...lol.
The "Richard's brother" gag was comedy gold LOL
Who is Richard? Funny “response” to answering the question, but who is Richard?
@@FranLinden Richard Brandson 😂
Richard, the friend of dogs, the engineer, the stove builder, the hiker and camper par excellence. Kentucky
Maggie is very well behaved and you are a lovely warm person. I really enjoy your videos, thank you.
great vid, that bread looked spot on perfect, brilliant job. bacon and smoked cheese great combo. surrey.
Kids come back. My son is 30. We still camp. He left camping for a while but again loves it.
You may have made this video 2 yrs ago but it is still spectacular! Your bread looks divine! Your wife should be so proud of you, you are very talented! I will look for more of your videos, thanks!
Just beautiful. I'm from the Caribbean and now I finally understand what my father used to say about baking outdoors long ago. He said there was fire above and below the oven and back then I had no idea what he meant. He also said it was the most delicious bread he had ever eaten. This actually looks like fun.
You have to try it out! Before working class people in Britain could afford stoves, they had a kind of Dutch Oven that fitted infront of a household fireplace and was heated from the back. I think industrial processes to make cast iron cheaply changed how we all cooked, but we've largely forgotten how now.
Sound of sawing. Wife: 'Are you watching another bushcraft video?' - Excellent as usual Simon.
Haha - they always know dont they!! 😂👍
I get this from my partner ha ha ha!!
My dad was a joiner and carpenter who had no boys so his 3 girls were his apprentices and he taught us a lot. Now I'm learning a whole set of new skills from you about living off the grid in hurricane season in Florida. Love learning new things from every video and having fun practicing them, Hoping my Dutch oven bread comes out half as good as yours.
That jet flyover was masterful, brought a smile to my face.
British Air ruins another trip.
Wonderful ❤ man and Maggie ❤
Maggie is so adorable! Love her.
This was wonderful, thanks for taking the time to bring us along teach us how to bake and be in the outdoors.
You're a good bloke Simon. Glad to see your channel doing so well. Always enjoy your videos.
Excellent, thanks again. Smoked halloumi-sounds like an art form.
Another great video, I love the little nod to yourself when you’ve triumphed over something cooked outdoors 👍👌🔥
Thanks for Sharing Simon! Great to see Maggie out in the woods with you.
Both the bread and the bacon wrapped cheese looked great. Thank you for sharing.
So nice to see a man with such a love of his environment. It would take a team of forensic scientists to find his camp site. He did such a good job of restoring it to its natural state. Well done Sir.
🙄
Best result in baking bread on an open fire that I have ever seen Simon, many thanks, keep the video's coming
Simon thanks for putting out these videos, its more than your best and the entertainment and commentary are much appreciated. the videos are inspiring and a good distraction from this life. very Happy you can get out doing what you seem to love.
Oh that bread looks lovely. I bet it smells so good, especially outdoors.
80K subscribers now! 🥳🥳🥳 wow! No worries-not enough time in the day to do everything we want to do. We love watching your videos! Always love seeing homemade bread and Maggie along. 💖🌿
loved every minute. I do this once a week now in my backyard have a lot of property some of it is wooded and I have a little tree stump and a lot of cast iron. Very relaxing and I take my Bible and a blanket and I'm good to go. Love the bread. Love your dog
I simply appreciate the time I get to spend with you. Thanks for letting me come along
Great demonstration of bread making. Thanks for sharing. Excellent video. You do things the proper way for sure
Maggie came along! No surprise your channel is growing, you are genuine and shows through. Thanks for another video getaway & all the best to you, cheers 🍻.
What a terrific job you did. I bake bread (at home) and I learned so much just watching you. My mouth was watering especially when you made the cheese and bacon wrap. You are one fine person. Thanks for sharing. All the best to you!
Very nice and peaceful, thank you Simon.
Thanks for sharing some more about yourself and opening up a bit, you're a great inspiration to us Simon. We got ourselves an old canoe, honed our thrifting toward cast iron and make our fires with more than a bic lighter. Cheers and God Bless!!! Adam & Katey
OOOH! When you bit into that bread, and I could hear how delicious and crispy the crust was.... nothing beats fresh bread and butter!
That jet flying overhead at the opportune time is so very funny.
always do my bread in my dutch oven you cant beat it!the idea of mixing the dough in a bag when outdoors is great!thanks for sharing
I like watching all the different kitchen gadgets that you use. They are all simple in design but work efficiently. I want to make some bread now.
I love that you are not forgetting Maggie to taste your wonderful lunch! Adding extra great memories in her life!
Maggie!❤️..hope she’s better😍
Amazing. I'm inspired to get back into nature. Well done and thank you!
Absolutely fantastic, love it!
Fantastic Simon! That made me hungry, and had Maggies seal of approval.. Really liked the slo motion fire starting 👌
Hey Simon, what a great video this was! I like your gentle style very much. Also liking the small and practical (amount of) gear you're using. It's super efficient and your cooking site can stay as compact as needs be. You explain very well what you do and why that is. Also the bit of personal stuff about you and your family makes this an all around gem of a survival/woodsman/cooksman video. And did I mention the choice of music? Spot on mate!
I'm drooling along with Maggie :) Awesome clip, thank you both.
Love the environment with tasty food. your Dog is so adorable.
I am going camping with a friend of mine in October, I think I am going to make this bread in my Dutch Oven then.
Mouth watering! Maggie approves 😋 Enjoyed the slo-mo fire-starting :) Someone had to do it!
Now that's living for the bread! I love it! Real camping, no glamping...Spectacular!!!
Another great video! Thoroughly enjoyed as always, thanks for taking the time and effort to share! Top job Simon😋👌
I'm so hungry now! 😆 The impromptu Q&A made me chuckle as I've obviously been watching long enough to have known most of the answers. The Richard/plane/Forrest Gump bit was hilarious. Thank you as ever for a fun video.
You are just absolutely adorable! Your family is very lucky to have you! As a 43-year-old woman in Keene, New Hampshire who enjoys survivalist camping and watches several channels. "Girl in the Woods" is one of my favorites and also her husbands bushcrafting channel. You may know them from season 4 of "Alone". I just think you're a wonderful bloke! Lol. Sending much love and support, a small town gal in New Hampshire!
so simple, and love that you had a small Aussie input to the ingrediency, thanks
Fantastic. Wonderful. Wholesome.
We could tell by the slobber what Maggie thought of your bush lunch before she even got a bite. Good to see you and that sweet girl get out for a bit. Stay well.
Simon, of all the camp cooking I watch on youtube, that must be one of the best , simple but delicious. yum!
Thank you Stephen!
Absolutely brilliant vlog.thanks.
Loved every second of it.
Even as a vegetarian that bacon-wrapped halloumi had my mouth watering. And clearly Maggie enjoyed it; look those eyes 🤣. Well done mate. Really enjoyed learning about the “rest”’of you. 👍🏻👍🏻 best to your family.🙏🏻.

Well played! Haha 😂
Made me crack up!
I'm guessing it was Richard flying over, he didn't want the secret out.
@@jmp1036A It's "Richard outdoors" he has a channel on you tube as well, him and Simon are good friends, they have similar looks and someone claimed they were brothers, it's become a bit of a running joke. God a man that can cook....wonderful
Living the dream my friend! Great videos. Many thanks.
Well done Simon. Here in Australia we also have issues with finding places where you can camp without first obtaining permission. However, they would not be as restricted as over there I'm sure. Hopefully this COVID-19 issue will be eased soon and we can get out camping again.
i love how you mix dough in the bag, it keeps it all off your hands until it's doughy :D
Gooey hands are no fun in the woods 😂
@@simonablokeinthewoods no they aren't!! haha
Excellent Dutch Oven cooking and you cleaned the ground like no one was there. Thanks.
Fantastic vid again Simon! Really liked the Q&A - I've wondered about a few of those questions! Can't wait until your next one!
You nailed that bake bud. Smoked Halloumi!? That's the future that is. 🤣🤘
Well done Simon. Now you've made me hungry! That bread was perfect and the bacon wrapped halloumi looked incredible. I was drooling like poor Maggie! 😅 As a big supporter of bacon-wrapped "anything", I will have to try that recipe. Oh, and that slow motion ferro rod strike was 🔥. Nice touch 😉. Cheers and ATB. Darby from Nova Scotia.
I enjoyed your video very much and Maggie as well, she is a sweetheart. The food looked wonderful and I love how you respect the land and put it back the way you found it. Your video makes me want to go out and do some good cooking in the great outdoors. Thank you very much.
Good inspiration! Thank you for sharing.
Those Dutch ovens look very versatile if a little heavy!
Yes, they’re definitely not a backpacking option! 😂
@@simonablokeinthewoods I didnt think so! 😉
They do go very well with canoes and kayaks, though. Gourmet dining as part of a paddling/camping trip is wonderful!
When the kids are your age, they will remember and return to the woods (perhaps take Grandpa along to share again) ☺️
Amazing...to make and bake bread with a campfire. It seemed so crispy and yummy. Good job!
Super excellent video, thanks for making it!
Lovely seeing Maggie with you Simon! That bread looked lovely........nothing beats a loaf you make yourself! Another great vlog........thank you......

i am glad to see how you are made the bread..Now i will know better..Very good video..you are so kind..human..Simon..much respect for your simplicity..and sincerity..we love you!
Thanks Simon! Always enjoy your videos friend!
Was hoping a video was coming out tonight, Dutch oven bread, looking forward to it. The plane part was brilliant! The questions and answers was a nice touch. I take my hat off to you sir, baker tent, land rover modifications, Lavvu modifications, making lamps and today I learned you also made that canoe. That was make a brilliant video alone! The bread was perfect, I also like to put a lot of butter on top, the crunch when you broke it apart, honestly lovely.
Thank you!!
Simon, Jack of all trades, master of ALL!
Yes, the bread looked great! Although, one packet of dry yeast (2 and 1/4 teaspoons) will raise up to 4 cups of flour.
Zion Trumpet well he’s done 2lb flour isn’t that 4 cups?
Don't give up on the kids, my eldest has just started coming out with me and she turns 30 this year. Bread looked great. Love the dog's 'Beatles' mop top.
Coincidentally, my boy Tom joined me out in the woods yesterday! (I had to tempt him away from his Xbox with promises of food obviously!) 😂
Simon, a bloke in the woods Hey, it’s a start!👍👍 Two thumbs up!
Simon, Jack of all trades, master of ALL! Neat slow motion fire starting!

Great video. Thanks for posting!
Can't beat a good bit of bush craft cooking. Nature is the best way forward.
The dog looks like one of the Beatles.
The fifth Beatle ... yeah
