In the Namib desert, brown hyenas have to travel far and wide in search of food. Their search sometimes takes them out of the desert and to the coast where defenceless seal pups wait for their mothers to return from the sea.

  • They are also known as "Strandwolf", and they are so fascinating! This wild, dry stretch of shoreline is an extreme place to live, but it suits them perfectly. Or it did - until now. Our crew filmed how these seal colonies are gradually disappearing because the ocean is warming up, and the algae are poisoning the water; therefore, there are fewer fish for seals to eat. Our team went deep into Namibia to discover what this means for the future of Namibia's hyena clans.

I know they are not much heavier at 300kg but still their skin is even thicker than cape buffalo and also blubber within the skin and their attack seem more faster and stronger than cape buffalo.

    @wildlifeisthewealthofnatur5457@wildlifeisthewealthofnatur5457 Жыл бұрын
    • Honestly i think a cape buffalo's attack is way worse than a cape fur seal, i mean they have weapons specifically for taking on things like that. This is why a lion cant take on a healthy cape buffalo on their own.

    • It's an interesting question to ponder, but it's important to remember that lions and Cape fur seals live in very different environments and have evolved different hunting strategies and adaptations. While lions are certainly powerful predators, their strength and abilities may not necessarily translate to a fight against a Cape fur seal. Additionally, it's important to respect and appreciate the diversity of the natural world, and to avoid promoting or glorifying violent interactions between species.

    • I am Namibian and the Namib (desert) does have lions. They are mostly found in the northern part of the Namibian coastline (Dorob) along with the elephants. The wild have adapted to the desert as Namibia is mostly an arid country. The seals are prey to lions as well as sharks, hyenas and jackals. Namibia has the largest wild seal population. They mostly live from the Cape Cross area further up north. But there are smaller colonies down south as well.

    • I mean...What do you actually know about hyenas? That's a good question to start with any animal, really. If you research any animal, you'll find something unique or interesting about them. In case of hyenas, their great intelligence is one thing to be admired. Spotted hyenas have intelligence on par with some primates, and are very skilled and talented hunters whom even the lions will rob if they can. Their social structure of matrialinity and inheritance is also unlike any other carnivoran out there. Brown hyenas are incredibly durable. They can withstand the harsh sandstorms and cold desert nights of their envirements, all while out searching for their next meal. Striped hyenas are incredibly adapatble, being the only hyena species outside of Africa and are known to stand their ground against much bigger threats even when the odds are against them, are dedicated parents and are surprisingly easy to tame. And aardwolves are the smallest and most unknown of the four, just minding their own business and happily munching on termites. Its also good to remember that when it come's to arguments against hyenas people often have, many of them don't make sense. They're predators, killing is what they do. They may scavenge, no carnivore will say no to an easy meal. They'll eat young or weak animals if they can, which any predator will do. The spotted hyena is known to eat prey alive, but painted dogs, wolves, dholes and even hawks are known to do it as well. Even lions, whom are often not associated with this behavior, will occasionally engage in it.
