Pokemon is a series that is known for being family friendly, but every once in a while, there are certain things that have to be censored before it can be presented to western audiences, and sometimes, the things that have to be censored are much more mature and crazy than you might think! That is exactly what we are covering in today's video, so I hope you enjoy!

    • Not really ironic, but definitely interesting. The difference is that with Mewtwo you have it being cloned from basically an alien/fetus-like creature in Mew that may or may not have been from Earth vs a direct reference to real world controversy. A kid might not pick up on it, but the adults actually buying the games might hear about it and have a problem, so the team erred on the side of caution

  • I'm pretty sure the severe censorship of matches and lighters was because the first season of Pokémon came out after a huge news story with a little kid who used a lighter to set his house on fire was blamed on an episode of Beevis and Butthead where they played with fire. His baby sister died in the the fire and it made national news in the US. A lot of cartoons around that time censored the use of lighters and matches due to the incident, including season 1 of South Park. Dynamite and bombs (so long as the effect was comical and not violent) were fine because kids typically didn't have them lying around the house.

    @SLTheOneAndAwesome19@SLTheOneAndAwesome192 жыл бұрын
  • Despite 4Kids bizarre censorship we would’ve never gotten the infamous “jelly filled doughnuts” meme if it weren’t for them. As for the Adventures manga in particular I understand some censors (like Blue ripping off her top to reveal hidden pokeballs) though one I find a bit odd is Crystals mother slapping her. I’m guessing the reason they did this is cause it might come off as abuse parenting but I find it funny that a slap of all things got censored despite there being a Pokémon being cut in half, a person being stabbed by a Pokémon, characters dying, etc.

  • The word "bomb" was likely cut from the anime (and possibly other kids shows) not for the intended audience, but rather for anyone either working or has worked in some level of military or law enforcement that might have been trained to instinctively react to someone yelling or saying the word "bomb". Yes, it can still potentially be a 4Kids level of stretch, but there's at least some method to the madness on that one.

  • You know what I find really funny about 4kids going out of their way to remove references to Japanese culture from a Japanese show? The fact that I, growing up in Germany watching lots of American shows and movies (even most of our anime dubs were based on the American dub), was always so confused by the fact that, for example, characters in those shows and movies did things in school that I never encountered. Eating lunch at school? Every student gets their own locker? The school has its own sports team? Cheerleaders? Pep rallies? Homecoming dances? Spelling Bee? I just find it funny that we got confronted with so many foreign concepts as kids, meanwhile 4kids thought American kids wouldn't understand what a rice ball is.

  • The early edits were explainable, kids are impressionable, and while it would be rare, all it would take is one lawsuit against the franchise because a kid burnt down their house because they saw the characters playing with lighters and matches and thought it was ok for things to go wrong, especially with new media. Also, a lot of what is changed is for familiarity, that way people get hooked to the series before they begin to try and explain the actual complexities, take for instance the Jelly Donuts dub instead of saying Rice Balls, kids in the U.S most likely when the episode first aired didn't know what a Rice Ball was or why they were eating it so a Jelly Donut would have made more sense to them even if it didn't make sense to the episode. If you're wondering how I know this? I have had to censor media before, there is a literal set of guidelines you have to follow, basically, most of it boils down to how likely is a context is to be impressionable to an audience and or if they will understand to be engaged enough to continue following the story. A friend of mine who has been a network censor for 30 years once stated that nowadays because of the internet kids know and understand more world culture than they ever used to, so they have been able to leave more foreign stories to be undoctored, and with shifting views about stuff such as Homosexuality, racial issues, and more stuff that would have been red flags back in the day are now allowed.

I think a bunch of schools banned any merch of the show on premises to try and discourage kids from watching it and the network put a bunch of restrictions on it. • Honestly, the localizing of food items isn't stupid to me. I mean, the way they did it, yeah, but not the concept of it, mainly because its meant for kids so it just makes things more understandable. That being said, it would be better if the "jelly donuts" were actually changed to jelly donuts instead of just looking like them, and if they were consistent by turning the giant rice balls into giant jelly donuts instead of sandwiches. But again, the concept to me makes sense, much like when they change jokes and sayings instead of just directly translating them. Its localization, after all. But the Magmortar TCG one is just the funniest to me. Yeah, there's others where its like "why would you think that's necessary?", but that one just feels like "we can't have the imaginary arm cannon aimed at the player or it will look too much like we're shooting them, so let's change the pose to make it look like a guy pumping a shotgun with one hand on TV." A fictional weapon aimed at kids in a still image? No. A pose referencing reloading a real weapon with the Pokemon looking ready for battle? Much better.

    • it´s not only the unglued set, but rather all the "Un-"-sets (Unglued, Unhinged, Unstable, Unsanctioned). They all were made for "fun"-purposes and used mechanics that are..... "impractical" for tournaments, or a competetive environment in general. A few examples: the instant "Sacrifice Play" : A person outside the game chooses an attacking or blocking creature target opponent controls. That player sacrifices that creature. the ability "Blurry": This creature can be blocked only if defending player was wearing glasses as it was cast. and other abilities that refer to mostly aesthetics of cards (which, in regular play, are do not change the card itself, or cannot be interacted with), which includes flavour text, border color and such and then my favourite: "Slaying Mantis", which has the etb-ability: "Slaying Mantis enters the battlefield by being thrown from a distance of at least three feet. When Slaying Mantis enters the battlefield, it fights each creature an opponent controls that it touched as it entered." The nice thing about these sets: Wizards of the Coast can use these sets to "test concepts", which will sometimes get slightly changed to actually be used in a competetive environment (my guess would be, that the "vehicle" artifact type and mechanic originated from at least an idea initially made for an Un-Set.

  • Hmm... speaking of removing religious references, it kind of ties into a personal theory of mine as to why Arceus is pronounced the way it is in the West: the original context. It's name was originally a portmanteau of "Arch", basically "high", and "Deus", which is Latin for "God", so "Arch/High God", hence the original Japanese pronunciation, "Ar-SEH-us", (not "Ar-see-us", which is more anglicized) as opposed to "Ar-kee-us", the official English pronunciation, derived from Archon or Archean, both of which are words used to refer to ancient beings, which Arceus happens to be. So yeah, my theory is that the localized pronunciation was altered to minimize religious references, with the anglicized pronunciation's ("Ar-see-us") unfortunate resemblance to an inappropriate term simply being the Cherry on Top, but that's just my take on it.

The parents in this case were extremely idiotic though, for one thing, why were the matches where he could reach them? Why didn't they teach him fire safety (seriously, I knew not to play with those at that age) and why were his parents letting him watch that anyway? I'm guessing 4Kids edited the matches so they wouldn't have a similar controversy.
