It's time to get started with reloading for the .22-250 Remington. My test rifle is a Remington 788 with a 26" Douglas barrel.

I'm about a year late here Johnny, but that's ok. Truth never changes and the information you put out saves anyone who watches a ton of effort and expense just knowing a place and which components to start with. Thank you
.22-250 works very well with H380/IMR4064/IMR4895. H380 got it's name, when Bruce Hodgdon was testing a new powder. In a .22-250, at 38.0 grains ....it was shooting one hole groups at their test range............So the new powder was named H380. ( from the Hodgdon loading manual number 26 page 11 )
Donald... I handload 9 different calibers.. my 22_250 model 788. Probably hands down my favorite... It took 100 s of experimental loads.. different powders n tips of different grains to achieve what i was looking for... I found two opposite loads that fly on top of each other @ 200 yds with no scope adjustment... I kid u not!!!! A 50 gr Winchester ballistic silvertip with 38 grs of H 380... And a 55 gr Hornady v max with 35.5 grs of IMR4895..... Dime groups at 200 yrds... We have competition shooting matches here in North Carolina... I'm barred from using the 22_250.... No one can beat it.....😁🇱🇷🇱🇷
I had a Kimber 84M Varmint in a 22-250 and IMR4320, a powder I'd previously had exceptional experience with and this particular one was no exception. IMR4320 with a 55 grain Sierra Blitzking, I could cover all of my 8 shots up with a dime.
Rem. 788 one of the best rifles Remington ever made even with the factory barrel.
My 223 788 had the bolt fall off ! Shooting factory loads.
The 788 22-250 I was shooting back in college (new in box, had been stored in the back of an old lady's closet because her husband got pissed at her for buying it 15 years earlier as it couldn't be used for deer hunting in that state) put 5 rounds of factory moly coated ammo (been too long to remember exact details) consistently into ragged holes at 100 yards (outdoor range but wind protected). Once I found that moly ammo, I bought one box every week (it was all I could afford to shoot in college), took it to the range, and drilled holes into the center of 1" pasters. I had no idea at that time that it would, 22 years later, be the single most repeatably accurate rifle I have ever shot, period, even after I got into shooting and began handloading years later. I don't want to get into why I don't have it and I am still bitter.
@@sapago4166 maybe the best love story I’ve ever heard. I’m sorry for your loss brother ❤️
@@Harry-pf5lc I feel understood.
@@sapago4166 my 788. 22_250 bought new in rapid city SD 1977 new..... i still shoot it. after 1000s of rds. still puts out nickel groups at 200 yds
Merry Christmas Johnny! Thanks for the video. I love these "how to get started in a caliber" videos.
This video has a lot of the interesting facets of reloading that make it fun and draw people in, and would be good to show beginners for how much changing components can affect things for the better are worse. I love it!
Thank you !!!! Brings back memories of my late Dad.....loved his 788 Bull Barrel..... swore by it !!!!!!
Merry Christmas. I hope you are able to spend some quality time with your loved ones. always love it when you use stuff that is connected to your grandfather. shows this channel is not about chasing the newest shiniest stuff.
Had to work today, you just made it worth it. Thank you, merry Christmas
Merry Christmas! Looking forward to watching this later. This is a great cartridge to shoot and reload.
Been waiting on 22-250 forever! ..keep’em coming .. great video
Merry Christmas. I am looking forward to this series.
Now this is a Christmas gift, merry Christmas jrb
22-250 on Christmas, what a day, love ya Johnny!
As a newb, I enjoyed seeing you work through the problem areas. Sharing your insights and thought process is extremely helpful and much appreciated!!! Thanks for a good video!
Thank you for this video, I am very grateful to you for the diverse amount of information that you managed to pack into it and I am very glad that I sat though it twice to make very sure that I absorbed all of its finer details, you solved my Hornady 53grn projectile (missing load information) questions and eventual problems in one go and that is very valuable to me.
Another excellent video. Beautiful rifle and great work on the loads. Thank you for putting in all the effort and filming as you go, then sharing it with us. Excellent video. I will never understand why someone would give your video a 'thumbs down'. Have a great day.
Whooo hooo a gift from JRB christmas morning.. thank you SANTA... Merry Christmas johnny
Very nicely done Johnny. Love the way you make your videos. Lots of information. Keep em coming please. 👍👍👍
The timing of this video could not have been more perfect. My new 22-250 rifle arrives tomorrow and so I am watching and taking some notes. I appreciate you spending so so much time on this video. Your editing skills and commentary are well thought out. Thank you!
If youre watching and havent ever shot a 22-250, you should. Its one of the most fun cartridges to shoot. Big crack, low recoil, high power.
It's my go to Woodchuck slayer.
Is it a barrel killer? Lots of powder smoking down a small hole.
@@bmstylee They are known to be. I've heard figures as low as 1200 rounds. Even then, that's just accuracy degrading a bit. I feel like my Savage 110 has already paid for itself at 500 rounds or so, and it is still going strong. That's an easy sub half minute rifle. I'll take 1200 accurate shots over 5000 mediocre ones.
@@bmstylee Barrels are cheap and performance is priceless. I refuse to join the "omg barrel burner" crowd! Life's too short to worry about barrel life. :)
@@JohnnysReloadingBench absolutely. 6.5 Creedmoor isn't easy on barells but I love my Bergara.
Merry Christmas all! And another great video Johnny!
Nice love the 22-250 . Best Christmas present thanks and keep up the great work.
Super excited for this series!!!!! I'm building a 22-284 when the components arrive.
Super cool you grew up with a grandpa like that. Great work as usual. 👍
I love the fact that you put out a Christmas special
Merry Christmas. So awesome it's a new video series. 22-250 was the very first round I ever reloaded for in a Stevens 200 22-250 with a 1/12 twist. It's now a 308 but I'm wanting another 22-250 barrel in 26 in with a faster twist. Excited for this series.
Yes I've been waiting long time for these videos
Thanks for the interesting content and Merry Christmas.
Thanks for the Christmas present Johnny! Hope you had a great one!
My first centerfire was a 788 in 222Rem. Loved that rifle. Accurate as heck.
A new Johnny video!! Its a Christmas miracle!
Oh man! I’m glad I decided to watch your older videos! I have a 788 in a .243 that I want to build, but I just can’t do it because the factory barrel on it will shoot 1/4” groups all day with factory rem core lokts. I feel like no matter how much “upgrades” I want to do to it, it won’t be an upgrade at all. Awesome video and I’ve learned so much from you and your channel! Keep the videos coming!
I like your way of getting it done!..love the 22-250 very nice rifle...years ago had rem..788 in 222 nice shooter!
Whoa...that was like - a major shout out that you gave me! Thanks for the Holiday entertainment, JRB! Merry Christmas.
Great video. I learned alot from it. I am getting ready to start my 22 250 test rounds with factory base lines. It is a savage axis 22". I love your videos. Be safe. Be happy. And send it.
Well worth the time spent and I always use mag primers with ball powders. Thanks.
Johnny caught a case of the jacked up bullet, epic video, thanks and merry Christmas
Enjoy your videos greatly! I used to shoot a 22-250Ackley improved, that Nelson Berger built for me. It was a heavy contour Douglas barrel with a 14" twist. It shot one hole groups with 55gr nosler ballistic tips and IMR 3031 powder. It shot good groups with the same powder/bullet combination as a standard 22-250, but I had to push the envelope on pressure and velocity a bit too high in order to get good accuracy, hence the switch to Ackley improved.
Impressive Johnny cleaned up the bench !👍
A bellyful of turkey and a Johnny vid. It's like Christmas. 🎄
Merry Christmas, Johnny, I like this Christmas show you put together. Those V differences are crazy on the 53s.
The way you've split the screens to incorporate the target sensor program is great. Merry Christmas, Johnny!
I was so happy to see the shotmarker picking up all the shots perfectly. I'm hoping more of the audience will come to love it once I switch over to it completely. I'm really happy with the system so far.
I m realy happy that i found your channel😃. A bunch of knowledge in one mans hand 🤚
Finally a fast little flat shooting 22/250! Hell yes thank you sir!😀
Great job. I felt your frustration.
I had a Douglas barrel on my Stevens model 200 in 6BR and was very pleased with the quality.
I think working through the problems is what keeps reloading interesting Merry Christmas Johnny
Very much so sir. I believe the something. Sometimes it seems like you'll never find that sweet spot but I have always found it in my travels.
Wow, blast from the past. Shot woodchucks with my 22-250 in the 70s. Great gun. Favorite load was 4895 at 3800 to 3900 fps using Sierra or Hornady 53 GR HP. Very accurate and 300 yard hit is explosive!
This is an awesome Christmas! We got a great JRB video today!
Merry Christmas from Australia 🇦🇺. Finally one that I can comment on. I have a Ruger M77 Mk1 in 22-250 which has a 1:14 twist. I have loads that use 55gr projectiles from Nosler (orange ballistic tip), and Berger VLD, both of which group exceptionally well at 100m. I have also achieved sub MOA groups using the Sierra 63gr semi-point projectiles. All of my loads use ADI 2208 (which I understand to be your Varget), in Norma or Lapua brass and FedGM210 primers. I look forward to the remainder of this series. Thanks for the great videos. Shane.
Thanks for watching, brother! And thanks for the info about what's working for you. I love hearing from you guys down in Australia. You all are my #3 country when it comes to views, after the US and Canada.
I’ve got a 1:14 22-250 that shoots 55gr well at 100 yards but after 100 yds they lose stability and the groups open up to 3-4inches. I understand that to be a stability problem bc if you run the numbers thro a bullet twist app then they show as being marginal. I also have a 338 with the same trouble with the heavier bullets.
Wedge - how many grains of the 2208 for your results?
Best christmas gift yet!
Morning Christmas Present from JRB!
First things first. Amazing video. You really put in the effort to be thorough. This is my first video of your channel and I just got a Marlin 22-250 and was curious about loading my own brass and when I watched this video.... Well I think I might just not do that.. this was a lot to think about. But if I am then I will definitely be watching this multiple time for this stuff to stick in my head. Keep it up!
Fun to watch, and educational, and I'm thinking of buying a 22-250 rifle for deer, and varmints and coyotes! Love the show!
You will love your auto bench prime . Just be sure you hold the case level and you'll have no problem. I have primed 500pcs of .223 in just over a hour. Although the video was a bit long you have a lot of information to work with. Keep up the good work.👍
I have that bench mounted priming tool for 2 years so far and I like it.
Merry Christmas JRB ..... I am liking ar comp more and more it’s becoming a versatile and reliable powder for me 😁 looking forward to next video keep up the good work
Thanks Jonny Merry Christmas
I had a .22-250 back in the 80's. 700 Remington BDL with a Weaver scope. I used IMR 3031, Sierra 52 grain BTHP, I think 32 or 38 grains of powder, and it would shoot hole for hole. Try the 3031.
I have no desire to own a 22-250 rifle and most likely never will. But I watched every second of this video. That’s how good your videos are 👍
Merry Christmas Johnny. Good stuff
one thing I wish barrel makers would do is put cal, and barrel twist on the barrel.
You may find it in odd spots. Some are marked on the chamber end face (may be lost when chambered) or may have ended up facing the barrel channel in the stock. As for chambering so many don't have that when they leave the barrel makers and are done by a gunsmith. It would be up to them to mark it. Caliber is kind of incidental once chambered but that info as well as Twist could/should be marked once chambering is chosen. Check preferredbarrelblanks.com/ for picture of marked unfinished barrels
Makes me fricken CRAZY!!
Wait, what barrel makers dont do that lol?
@@paulvenn4447 Criterion Barrels roll Mark their pre-fit barrels with the chamber and twist rate so it shows on any rifle. Shilen marks their barrels on the breech end. You can't see it once it is installed.
One thing I wish all companies would do: have an idea submission area and ACTUALLY take advice from their customers. Shocking the concept but I think it’d only help them. The ceo should not be making the technical decisions but they do.
Thank god,, you gave use a great Xmas present. Nice to see you back @ it,,,
Thanks, I really enjoyed watching this video. Kept my attention and it was a normal guy kinda experience. Good job 👍
Hey Johnny I reload for 22-250 A LOT and have learned with a 1-12 or 1-14 twist barrel the flat base bullets always perform much better than boat tails.
I have seen the same with my Remington 700 in 22-250. Mine likes 53 grain Nosler Varmageddon bullets.
This is 100% correct. I experienced the same with my factory Savage 1:12 twist barrel.
Found exactly the same out of my 1:14 Tikka. When I rebarrel, I'm thinking of using 1:10. Got about 500-600 rounds life
JD Kirane my savage likes those bullets also. What powder, how many grains, and what OAL gives you your best groups if you don’t mind sharing ? My only complaint with those bullets is trying to get them to start in the case got any suggestions for that ?
I've noticed that to. Spitzer round from sierra I think is the last I used that went straight. Boat tails floundered in the air and would land sideways and whatnot. I was like...whuuut😵 Then I read somewhere 🤔🤷 that boattails need higher pressure to fly straight. I might try them again and go max load or something.
Beautiful rifle. I have an old Remington 550-1 which I believe was made in 1942. I like the old Remingtons.
Awesome video buddy! Enjoyed the whole thing. Good to see the good and the bad. I have a 788 in .308. All stock. Great gun. You will get this one figured out I'm sure. Once again thanks for taking the time to explain the process.
Ive got a 788 in .308 ,with a burris scope , its a shooter
Watching the video for the 2nd time now because I finally got some stuff in to reload for 22-250 can't wait until you make the next video on this!!! If you're going to buy a 22-250 you might want to look at the Ruger M77 Hawkeye that thing is a sweet shooting rifle. I just bought one so I can retire my custom 22-250 I inherited from my grandfather. It was a gorgeous rifle with a high polished blued barrel and wood stock that I didn't like taking it out in the woods or rain because I didn't want to mess it up.
I always had good luck with H380 41grs and Sierra 55gr Spitzer boat tail. Very good video.
I like hand priming tools also and then I ran into the same issue as you did with the Norma tight primer pockets. So I got one of the Lee bench-mount priming tools. Way more muscle to deal with tight pockets.
Oh man shooting through the magento strap! Ooof! I really like the longer format videos since I'm new to this.
I love the .22-250. I have 4 of them 1 in 1:14 twist 2 in 1:10 twist, and a new one that I've not fired yet 1:8 twist. Thanks for the .22-250 series
77 barnes lrx bad ass deer load
Merry Christmas! Thank you for the present of another nice video! I dont have this caliber but I might have to get a rifle in this caliber. I saw a very nice Browning Hells Canyon Bolt Action that you might convince me to buy! Again many thanks!
I take back what i said about the shot marker, its really cool and showing both the shot marker and your lovingly hand crafted target is really freakin cool
Awesome video , I love Gold Dots !!! Thank You for doing this video .
Good to see a full video! :)
I just saw a ad for a new federal bullet. It is called terminal ascent it is in .264 and .308 and a few others. Maybe a new 6.5 Creedmoor candidate. Thanks for the awesome videos. You have made me want to start reloading.
I really hope you revisit the .22-250. You run a great channel really enjoy the videos, and learn a lot.
199 pieces of brass in the box, 199 pieces of brass, take one out, crack the case mouth, 198 pieces of brass in the box...
Shot thousands of rounds and never split a neck
Brush this was to funny ☠️😂
you not having a day off Johnny.... great KZhead Chanel this👍 all the best and happy Christmas from England
I have 2 RCBS hand priming tools, one for large, one for small primers. Very happy with them.
Merry Christmas and a JRB video
It is interesting reading the large number of comments from people who seem to like the 22.250. Well as a professional shooter here in Australia, I have tried the 22.250 and although it was a nice little gun, and basically accurate to a point, I found that when I changed the case to Ackley improved, my accuracy improved dramatically. In fact after using this rifle for some time I changed all my rifles to be Ackley Improved. Aside from the Remington in 22. 250, I use .243 improved and 30.06 case with a 6 millimetre bullet. Each and every one of these rifles shoot really well. I don’t have the loading specs at present.
Benchmark powder and 52 gr amax is a great combo for anything up to deer size game I have found
Most interesting to see the velocity delta downrange from unstable bullet. Good video; merry Christmas.
That BLEW MY MIND! I was not expecting it at all. It makes sense...but it's still shocking to see the numbers.
Still in the process of getting reloading bench set up. But when I do, I'll be doing 22-250 for a Remington 788 myself. Love the rifles.
Johnny, you might want to give 38.0 grains of H380 with 52 grain bullets a try... Quote from Hodgdon, "H380™ was an unnamed spherical rifle propellant when the late Bruce Hodgdon first used it. When a 38.0 grain charge behind a 52 grain bullet gave one hole groups from his 22 caliber wildcat (now called the 22-250), he appropriately named the powder H380"
Lots of folks recommending H380. I feel obligated to add it to the series. We'll shoot it soon!
You beat me to it, Niles. H380, nothing else matters. I've used it from 40-55gr ballistic tips and it is THE 22-250 powder.
With those Norma primer pockets, try running those cases on your prep center with a primer pocket uniforming bit. That, and try the lee Auto Bench Prime. Like all tools, it has it's quirks, but once you work with it a bit, you'll find it to be a nice addition to your bench. Plus, your thumbs will love you!
Great Christmas present! Merry Christmas JRB.
I really enjoyed the first video I hope you work on this series some more soon
the best brass I ever reloaded 22-250 with was Hornady. over many years I shot the brass till when fired the ejected brass the primers would fall out . I shot many brands of brass but Hornady brass always serves me best. Nana and papa the hunter wishing you well
Love your videos. One I would like to see sometime is a 6.5 Grendel 85gr varmentor bullet. Thanks for your content.
About time i have been hoping youd do this soon!
Shot grey diggers at 400yds with 22-250 back in the 80's. Amazing! Winchester model 70. Vapor traces and pink mist. Hit dirt pile at their feet absolutely explosive
All in all, a very nice video. Good info on the whole process. All handloaders have problems. I always lube the inside of the neck with powdered graphite on a Q-tip before sizing. I've had bad luck with Winchester brass. One bag had 50 pieces (half the bag) where the new cases would not fit in the chambers of two of my rifles. I full-length resized three of them, and they STILL wouldn't fit! Can't say I understand that, but there it is. Sent them back, they gave me a new bag. Overly tight primer pockets make my head ache when I'm loading. You should consider either cleaning between groups so that each load has the same amount of 'dirtiness' or shoot the groups together, switching targets between each shot. The jury may be out on whether or not hanging that velocity meter on the barrel is a good idea.
Your video quality is just like your reloads. You have a lot of work ahead of you.
A good learning video
You need some H-380 in there, not too temperature stable, but still continues to give me my best groups. Thanks for the video I have been one of the folks looking forward to this caliber.
Hey Johnny haven't seen any content from you for a while ypur doing well brother. My experiences with 22-250 mirror yours so far with everything from the hard as hell older winchester brass and heavier bullets not shooting well. Love to see more content on the 22-250 as I try and develop some loads for mine. I finally bedded my ruger no.1 and seeing a major improvement in groupings. Hopefully see some more content from you for 22-250 to help me with my own.
Had a Rem 700 22-250 and I believe it was 1 in 14 twist.
