Original ending, he sacrificed himself for the cure. Alternative ending, he gave up his cure to save himself and please the zombie whilst still possessing the knowledge for the cure. Original has more of a realist approach but we all like to see the winner win

Nope You got it wrong , The movie is based on the novel , and the alternate ending is more close to that of the Novels , in the Alternate He Realizes he's not as righteous as he thought he was , He was The Monster To the Night seakers Who Have Feelings and a community of their own which Neville was hurting , Neville Realizes the reality and Abandons the idea of curing them

not enough people are understanding the point of the alternate ending, and are just focusing on neville surviving or not surviving and the cure. the alternate ending is supposed to be focusing on the infected. neville realizes that they aren’t just monsters, and are intelligent and care about each other. he realizes that he’s a monster in their eyes, like the boogeyman. a legend. so he decides to stop working on the cure. he doesn’t want to be a monster anymore. he returns the alpha’s mate, and instead of killing neville, the alpha spares him, showing thankfulness.
Man has created the Virus. Man has to pay for it by getting devoured by the Darkseekers. Neville said, "God didn't kill them. We did."
But still who cares about darkseekers, they're better off with a bullet in their head
And that's quite a bit colser to the theme of the book.
The alternate ending does not imply Neville will stop seeking a cure. It does imply that he will take better care of his test subjects from now on.
where was their intelligence and compassion when they were randomly murdering innocent people? The only ones who demonstrated any sort of actually intelligence was the alpha. Plus, the alpha only cared about his mate. He didn't give a shit about the other pack members. He was tossing them aside like they were trash.
I like the alternative ending because unlike what we expect to where Will’s character is a legend for “curing” humans. He’s become a legend to the crawlers for kidnapping and killing them, like a monster from a fairytale.

Just watched the movie. It had the alternate ending. I prefer it. It makes it far more clear that there is an alpha. And also gives the darkseekers a shred of humanity. We see earlier that they are capable of making a trap. But with the alternate ending, we see that the alpha wants his mate back. And that's why they're at his home. Smearing the butterfly was more believable to me than the cracks randomly forming a butterfly. People saying the original ending makes more sense for the title. But you don't have to die to be a legend. And he would still die later as civilization rebuilds itself. Also, you can't tell me that he wouldn't leave the city after his home was destroyed. His whole reason for transmitting the radio signals was that he had food, shelter, safety. He doesn't anymore. He also found the cure, so there was no reason to stay at ground zero. It just doesn't fit with me that he would kill himself just to take out the alpha and the 3 or 4 other darkseekers in the room.

I think the infected girl is the alpha's daughter. I mean, robert did mention that the she's around 18-20 years of age. The alpha looks like he could be her father

your forgetting the reason why he killed himself in the original, to save the others, while yes the cracks forming a butterfly was a bit far, he'd have to stay in ground zero because thats where the infection would be strongest thus making a cure more potent and effective, giving up the cure to save his own ass was kinda dumb and ruins alot of the buildup to the climax, sure killing himself can do that too but these things literally kill themselves to stop a helicopter just to take at the few passengers. their sense of self isnt there in that part so why later does one see fit to save one at the cost of more than its worth. its possible to have alphas but in a society like theirs it would seem more fitting the stronger ones would be the alphas, not the more sentient ones

Unpopular opinion: both endings are equally as good as the other and both tie up the story in really good ways…great thing about it is that you can choose which one you want to believe is the true ending. Not many movies can do that and do it well. It’s simply why I think this movie stands out and is definitely worth the watch.

Meh for the people who red the book the movie is too childish as a whole. The fact that the guy that everyone say is our best chances happens to succeed is a big misunderstanding of the point of the book.
I remember enjoying the original ending just fine, then years later, seeing the alternate ending and getting the impression that people hated the original. Well, I do like the alternate/original ending, but I think the one they went with was fine as well. Both tell different stories, one in which a man finds the cure and likely saves humanity, and another in which its found that the 'monsters' still have some of their humanity left. I think both can work for different ideas.

Also I’m pretty sure in a way Neville is a bad guy because the darkseekers are kind of like us humans just more primitive plus Neville did kill a bunch of them and stole the Alpha’s “girl”
He literally said they'd catch up if they all tried to escape, they're far faster than humans -- unless you blow up the lab with a grenade shortly after the others have escaped.. but even this is verging on unrealistic. You are right in a way, I believe those thoughts would've been running through his head at that moment, thinking of his wife and children.

Both ending are good. The alter one let us know the reason why the darkseekers go after them. The original ending is a more about the main character and the alter ending is more about darkseekers
Actually the alternate ending IS the original. That's how it goes with alternate endings They are rejected because test audiences don't like them. Infamous example Little Shop Of Horrors originally ended with the plants taking over the earth, but it was changed into a "happy" ending before release.

@@Mist261 If you mean the "happy" ending with his sacrifice and therefore saving humanity, then yes that's the one that made it into theatres. But chances are the ending where he realizes that he's the bad guy was most likely shot first.
I believed and still do, it was because he wanted to die. He lost his wife and kid and probably felt he was partly to blame for it. The only family member he had left was the dog who he had kill with his own hands because it turned. We can see earlier in the film he was talking to mannequins to try and keep some sense of sanity that was barely hanging on by that point. Only saved by the dog and his continuous work. He saw an opportunity to have someone continue his work once he found the cure, but no longer had the will to keep living without his family and wanted to be with them again.
The will of the smith lives on through other people.

That’s exactly what my boyfriend said when we watched it I asked him why wouldn’t he just throw the grenade and close himself inside the hatch with them when she acknowledges there is enough space for him i guess he didn’t have anything to live for once he realized he found the cure

I think he’s more mad than satisfied about catching him. If somebody killed your family, and you caught them, you wouldn’t feel satisfied, you would still be hurt, mad, whatever. You would want to kill that mf as quick as possible

@MD Sakif I dissagree. The way I see it is that, as legend, he saved humanity, which is typical action/end of the world movie stuff. As hero, he realized that the darkseekers aren't monsters, but he is. He kidnapped and killed so many humans to find a cure that didn't need to exist. Robert saw himself as a criminal and to atone for his sins, threw away the only chance at a cure and apologised. The only reason I like the original ending more is because Robert killing himself after losing everything made more sense than him leaving "ground zero". Of course, this is nothing but my opinion and you shouldn't take this to heart.

The alternate (good) ending showed more accurately how Neville forgot the one thing a good doctor always remembers: You always must be kind to your patients so they know you do not mean to hurt them, but want to help them get better. Neville wanted the cure no matter what he put the test subjects through.

Alternative ending was better: Everyone’s talking about Will finding out out they have emotions and care about their own. But nobody’s gonna talk about how after Will says “sorry.” To their leader the leader HIMSELF finds out Will ALSO has emotion too. They look at him as some boogeyman that steals their loved ones from them, some sort of urban legend. They think of him being heartless and doing things out of random. But in this scene alone he can see Will also has emotions and can see he knows he was wrong and for a second is confused and intrigued of Will at the same time. Kind of shows a grain of interest in him not being so different, but takes his girl back home with the rest of the group.

The alternative ending makes more sense and I like it better. It explains how the mannequin got where it ended up (the monsters put it there and copied the trap our hero had made earlier, showing that the monsters have intelligence). The OG ending ends with the monsters just being mindless monsters and this leaves a plot hole in that it fails at acknowledging the monsters were doing intelligent things earlier in the movie. In failing to explain how the mannequin got there we are left to wonder that it could have only got there by the protagonist putting it there himself and forgetting about it or going insane and doing it to himself because he's losing his mind. The alternative ending also shows up what the title of the movie ACTUALLY means, our hero is a legend known by the monsters who speak of HIM as being the monster. To them HE is the monster. He is the only human and he hunts and kills them, they don't know why he does it so they assume he is evil. That is the real reason he is a legend.

It was pretty obvious that they set the trap for him. The writers made it literally as obvious as they could without showing them do it. I've never once thought or heard of anyone else thinking that he set up a trap for himself in a fit of insanity. Just because they demonstrate the capability to learn and follow a leader's instructions doesn't mean they're ready to start building Notre Dame or something. They're still largely driven by the desire to eat(survival) and rage. Ignoring that because they showed signs of "intelligence" would've been an actual plot hole, not this one you made up.
Actually you wrote EXACTLY what I thought every time I watched it. I enjoy the movie but hated the ending and the questions it left just as you described. I did wonder if he was going insane or were the zombies getting smarter etc. I didn’t know there was an alt ending until now and I LOVE it. Fits the earlier set up better and is superior writing. It was screen tested in front of audiences who were clearly as dumb as you who didn't like it so they reshot it with the ending released theatrically. That ending missed the entire point of the book and all the hints built up in the movie that the infected were not monsters but actually actually just a new race. Next time you want to sound smart know what you are talking about.

When I first watched the movie it had the Alternative ending and I loved it. It’s what made me love the movie to be honest. Ig I just loved the idea that dark beings can have hearts too. Even if it’s unrealistic to some ppl. I just rewatched the movie again, just waiting for the ending in joy, and then I get THE ORIGINAL ENDING WHERE HE SACRIFICES HIMSELF😭
Ok wow. I have always liked this movie except for the ending and now I know why. The original (alt) ending is so much better and answers questions brought up during his earlier interactions with the zombies like were they getting smarter? Recovering? And now to see this awesome ending that they had feelings and emotions for each other! Yes. Way better movie with this ending.

Although the "alternative" ending is closer to the book, I like the original ending a lot better. Neville's character manages to save the woman and boy and is redeemed for not being able to save his own wife and kid. From a narrative perspective, it is a lot more satisfactory than having him start a new life.

I only remembered the original ending from watching when I was younger, I've been wondering what movie that ending was from for so long. I just watch this with the alternate ending and recognized the glass door getting almost broken. I swore this had a different ending and I was right! Both endings are amazing, 2nd ending is more pleasing to everyone though so I see why they changed it.
The alternative ending is the better ending, I mean, what do you do with a cure that has no way to reproduce it. And in the second ending he didn’t blow up the lap, allowing him to take another darkseaker, get another cure, inject him or her with it, then mass produce.
He gave it a military man. I am pretty sure they would find a way.
They could inject the cure into another infected and once it's "cured," they could take blood samples from it.
Once the people gave the cure to someone, they could exponentially multiply the cure via blood samples.
I also think the alternative ending is better to bring the message of hope for curing the zombies from a fire spark.

The first ending is so good but it's sad because he died the alternate ending is the most people want including me but i thought the infected didn't control themselves but in the last part they are like Mafia man going to the people who kidnapped his girl and try to take her home.
It’s a little more accurate to the book. In the novel, they were highly intelligent, to the point where they had their own society. Will Smiths character was their monster, he kidnapped their kind in the day and experimented on them to find the cure. They were scared of him. He was legend.
What a brilliant actor he should've had an Oscar for this movie

Came here to watch the alternate ending after learning there’s going to be a sequel with Will Smith returning. Looks like they may ignore the original ending of the first movie.
There are two ways for the squel to happen, one way is that it focuses on the alternate ending and the aftermath of the events in 2009 or the focus on a completely new character trying to survive the wasteland but even if one of them happens, Micheal b Jordan is the main character
It's such a shame they changed the original ending because test audiences didn't understand the implications of the true ending. The entire point was that they didn't want a cure - Neville was the monster, terrorising them, not the other way around, hence the title. When he looks at all of the photos of the infected he's killed is when he realises that he's not the only one trying to survive and understands what he's done. He is a legend but for all of the wrong reasons.

I saw this in theaters at 13 and thought it was a dumb ending, years later we bought the DVD and I saw the alt. ending. Now rewatching them both, I'm honestly kinda torn. Both end on a "good" note, the original ending really makes you remorse over Will Smith's character with hope that the cure will save everyone, the second let's you rejoice that he's still alive, but without any major sacrifice to get the cure, it kinda makes the whole "ending the apocalypse" scene less powerful.
But he did make major sacrifices. He, Anna and Ethan nearly got killed in that lab but he chose to accept the blame for the harm and suffering he caused his "test subjects". It is a major thing to let go of pride and be humble and admit when you are wrong. Neville did that. That makes the alternate ending much more powerful.
there really was no apocalypse it is just a new breed of humans. The alternative shows that he is the villain, the legend of the new species of humans that will be past on. Literally "I am legend".

I don't see him as a villian for protecting the human race from monsters. Do you think these monsters would have become vegan or vegetarians? No they would have continued to attack humans. That's why they all need to be destroyed. The main character isnt the monster. They are the monsters. I'm surprised that more people dont seem to realize this.

I like the first one more , The infected showing human expressions like that in the end doesn't explain why Naval was being attacked at the start of the movie in the first place.
I Am Legend stems from the books impression that he's a legend to the darkseeekers in the way that he's like the boogeyman. They fear him because he hunts them down. Kidnaps them and kills them with his testing. In the book they tell their children to not go out during the day for fear of the mad human who'll kill you or take you away and you'll never be seen again.
One ending is will smith sacrifices himself for the cure and the another ending is will smith sacrifices his cure to KV virus for himself despite of possessing knowledge for the cure
I think the “bad ending” is the better one, it’s provides more character development with him never really having a purpose even if he thought he knew what he was working for. But by giving his life to save the cure he was finally given that reason for his suffering and his death was the final task to ensure it. By having him live his development is cheated of that final task to let him fulfill his mission
He lived, but realized he's been behaving like a monster to a new society... And now he has to live with that. I believe that's character development and depth, not some suicidal heroics. An ending like that is, for me, unoriginal, with nothing new to offer, seen it a thousand times. The closer to the book on the other hand is fresh and exciting.
Original/bad ending is super unoriginal. “Will Smith blows the monsters up with a grenade and sacrifices himself, becoming a legend.” We have seen that ending for the 10000th times. The alternate ending is art. Will Smith realizes he is the monster. These vampires have intelligence. They are capable of love and affection, just like human. They have been rebuilding society in their own ways. Will is the one who keeps kidnaping and killing their kind. He is their boogeyman. A horror figure. A LEGEND.

I don't view either of the endings as the "true" ending, rather both as alternate universes. They both have the pros and cons, and feel it's up to the viewer to decide which ending they like the best. Very similar to a video game, specifically Mass Effect. These two endings are like the Paragon and Renegade choices.

The ending where he lives was the original ending. The one that was made during production and intended to be the final conclusion. But it tested poorly with american audiences so they changed it. They wanted an action send-off rather than an ending that made you think and second guess what the movie has led you to believe. What Neville has led himself to believe the entire time.

Original ending just didn't make as much sense.. she carried a vial of blood - travelling however far - no cooler or any original samples and the survivours are just supposed to make sense of the work this man spent years on with no notes, no samples and a single vial of crusty blood.. I can't believe that they thought him blowing himself up was the better ending. its not even close to the book and underminds the hints that these are more than just zombie vampires. I think people don't get the darkseekers, in the book we find out that they are intelligent self aware creatures they are the new humans and Neville just couldn't see that until the end of the book. the alternate or as I like to call it the true ending is more thought provoking then him just blowing hisself up for no reason. he could have just got in there too and thow the bomb after. the darkseekers being an intelligent race and not just monsters is a great twist and I am legend the name of the book and the movie is Neville's position among the darkseekers he is their Dracula, he is their boogie man who comes when they are sleeping and takes them, he is their legend. these darkseekers are more then just dumb creatures they are the next humans. I don't get why people couldn't see that. the point of the book was that neville tries to find a cure for what he thinks is a virus but its actually evolution and there is no cure for evolution. thats what the book and the true ending is about but the theatrical ending is just him blowing up and finding a cure. it changes the story of the book and the movie for the worse. instead of this movie being thought provoking now it becomes just a zombie movie. if you like the theatrical ending good for you but the true ending is the best one because it makes you think if neville was the hero or the villain.

The alternate ending was suppose to be the ending for the film, but because of test audiences not liking it they changed it to the ending that we saw in the theatrical version..

In Portugal, the alternate ending was the one that was originally released, at least on cable TV. The first ending that you showed (the big bang ending) does not have enough depth, namely, a major twist in the book was that Neville realizes he is the monster, in the "good ending" we see his realization of the others (the "vampires") as people who formed ties with each other, not as just monsters. The alternate ending is more in line with the book. I actually find it more interesting than the big bang ending. In an interview Will Smith revealed that he liked more the "good ending" than the "big bang" ending. Thanks for sharing the "good" alternate ending.

The alternative ending is a very deep ending & unless given deep thought, it won't be fully understood. It's basically that he thought he was doing the right thing by finding a cure for humans, but whats done is done. They are creature's like us who can have emotion & not just rabid monsters like originally thought out to be, shown by the fact that they let him live. He realized when looking at his experiment pictues that by fighting the monsters for so long he himself eventually turned into one
There is no good or bad endings. Just one which makes more sense and one that doesn't The one in which Neville lives up to the title name being the former

I just pirated the movie and had an existential crisis when the ending was nothing i remembered it to be. Thought I switched universes or something.
Original was more realistic and poetic while the alternate was kinda scary when he was walking right next to them

After years of ignoring this movie coz of all the stick the ending got. I finally watched the movie and felt the original ending left alot to desire. The alternate ending feels more like a Outer Limits ending which inspired further thoughts and a possible rewatch just to find breadcrumbs. I mean he says that their humanity is gone yet this "man" set the same trap he(Neville) set for them. Which makes one believe that they still human and not monsters. Almost like they are our pseudo-evolution. Yes a cure would help BUT to be made a superior being , superior only in the fact that cancer isn't a problem anymore. Is good enough for me.
I legit thought I went insane or some shit, I got confused at the alternate ending after watching the movie so googled an "explained" video and saw the original ending being explained. Still think the new one is better though

@@TDB2K well I saw an interview where will Smith said he didn't like sequels for a cash grab so if he does make a second one it will be worth it since he is so involved in the movie making process. Also I got a I am Legend 2 trailer concept recommend that was posted like 10 months ago it made it seem like it was going to be released in 2022 (could he fan made. but after looking online I also read that it's possible for a sequel to be made released 2024 but it's not certain.

I think that both ending are very good. Different, with different drama, but both amazing. With the alternate you see the humanity in the bad side, with the regular ending you have the drama of the sacrifice of Will for the humanity.

When I bought the special edition DVD that included the alternative ending years ago, I didn't understand how it hadn't been used in the cut that was shown in the cinema. It's a better ending and leads to a sequel. Good thing the producers got it. The ending that was shown in theaters is gruesome and anticlimactic

Well, I’ll be damned. This movie is one of my favorite movies of all time (top 5) and I never knew there was an alternate ending. What’s funny is, while watching this, my boyfriend had never seen the original ending but had seen the alternate.

I’m confused. A lot of people say the alt ending shows why the darkseers went after MC. But also from the beginning the darkseers were violent (helicopter scene) and I just assumed they were hungry and wanted any human they knew of. If they just wanted to exist within themselves how do you explain what happened when the virus first spread? Am I missing something? What altered their mind , would they still want to be human? To survive as they did before? Or did the virus provide them whole new instincts?
The alternative ending is simply fan service in my opinion, it makes no sense.🤷

I think the proper ending would be a mix of the two, the original ending plus addressing they were viewing him as the monster and that alpha wanted his mate . May be she dies before the infected arrives and Neville finds out he's a killer in their eyes, so with all his loss and misery there's no way out and he takes his life with them.
Ending show that infected are no longer humans...even if they breathe they are not humans anymore... It show us that human are better and whatever is not human is a monster without any feelings... Something that make it more easier for us that he kill them without trying to understand them... Alternative one show that they still feel...they feel love, anger, danger... They still living being... It show that they still alive and theres hope for us and them to find a cure or coexist...

I feel both endings are good but I prefer the original because there was a finality to it that PA movies seem to be scared to execute. But both ending convey the messages. The dark seekers are intelligent, Sam was his connection to Marley, redemption, faith, & Neville was a legend in a good & bad way. The good way is obvious the bad way is he was a legend to the Darkseekers as the man that harms, captures & experiments on them i.e the alphas wife/mate. He became the monster in this new 🌍. (Like the book)
I watched the movie and ended up watching the Alt ending and when googling the movie again after years I saw Will die and I was confused. Just realized there are 2 versions, prefer this one over the original.

I feel like most people need to re watch the movie and keep the alternate ending in mind because you start to notice a lot of things that show that the darkseekers are intelligent. they spare a dog but not a deer when both entered the building at the same time, the set a trap that would only work for the doctor, the alpha braves the sun to get the female back, they go after him specifically when he goes to the pier and are ordered to try and flip his car, then proceed to not kill him after it flips, then they track him back to his house to get the girl back. the alternate ending is really good especially after the alpha recognizes what was going on and lets the doctor live.
