A decrease in libido or difficulty in achieving or maintaining an erection during sex are tell-tale signs of erectile dysfunction, and they can be uncomfortable to address. Sure, aging and performance anxiety are part of the story, but believe it or not, erectile dysfunction is not just about sexual health. It’s often the first clue of bigger health issues.
In this episode of my Health Bites series, I explore the root causes of erectile dysfunction, delving into the limitations of conventional medicine, the little blue pill, and how we can utilize the power of Functional Medicine by making changes to our diet, lifestyle, and even trying things like supplements, peptides, and hormone therapy.
This episode is brought to you by Mitopure and Rupa Health.

In this episode, I discuss (audio version / Apple Subscriber version):
The prevalence of erectile dysfunction (4:34 / 2:04)
The root cause of low testosterone (9:38 / 7:08)
The conventional medicine approach to treating erectile dysfunction (11:51 / 9:21)
How do Viagra and ED drugs work? (16:34 / 14:04)
The Functional Medicine approach to treating erectile dysfunction: diagnostic testing (18:58 / 16:28)
Root causes of sexual dysfunction (29:42 / 27:12)
Diet, lifestyle, and supplements to improve sexual dysfunction (42:22 / 39:52)

  • In defense of many doctors out there, unfortunately it is often not a case of the doctors not knowing to request these tests, but it's the insurance companies not being willing to cover the costs of these tests. On several occasions I've requested to have some of these tests done, and my doctor has told me he could order them, but my insurance would not cover them. I'd have to pay for them out of pocket, which is something I cannot afford to do. So, people are left not knowing vital information because insurances, that you pay out the ass for, won't cover them. Insurance companies aren't about prevention. They are all about profit. Healthy people don't make a profit for them but chronically ill people do.

  • At 51 I spent the last 18 months recovering my manhood after 4 years of being separated and being quite out of practise. Hitting the gym helped was not THE initial push against the inertia I found. I boosted my testosterone with food and supplements, building muscle will do it too. I also considered arterial plaquing and took that as a symptom of a possible larger problem. I also dealt with my psychology as my ex made me feel worthless. Finally I hit upon the kick up the rear end that smashed inertia. Went to an adult shop and they had a herbal supplement called Vitamin Xx. I no longer use it as it made me hard kept me hard only when I was aroused. Lasted 3 days. I learnt to take less and get the same effect. Eventually found I did not need it nor want it. I think psychologically it gave me the confidence with my girlfriend and hijacked self doubt and negative thinking. I certainly don't perform like I did at 20 but age and experience makes up for it. Just frustrated that I don't know what a quickie is any more.

ED when you don't live the average American diet. I'm a ranked endurance athlete, exercise 3-4 days a week, have a solid diet régimen, intermittent fasting, high fat. Hiit training, resistance training, has good labido, T levels in the 400s which is not great but overall, I'm as healthy as I could be and still have issues with getting and staying hard, with the exception of mornings. I changed to a vegan diet, and I started popping wood sitting at my desk at work. I think it was mostly circulation issues. I was consuming a lot of garlic which also helps. When my diet fluctuates I have a decline in penis health. There are a lot of herbs that also help. Cacoa and maca seems to REALLY make a big difference. There is a lot to it, but your health should be the main focus in anyone's life. Without your health, you don't have much.

    • @andreaspeters3773 Again, by definition insoluble fiber is indigestible. Facts are non debatatable. Most vegans eat more than vegetables lol and the ones that dont are malnourished. Cows eat their food, swallow their food, regurgitate their food, rechew their food and swallow it again and also have a four chamber stomach. Nothing to do with gut microbiome or human nutrition. Your human gut microbiome only can break down and feed off fermentable SOLUBLE fiber which break down to short chain fatty acids. You can extract exactly zero nutrients from insoluble fiber. Insoluble fiber also causes IBD, IBS and pouchitis.

Add sardines (in water, not oil, preferably no salt), eat meat (best if cooked to rare, unless you like raw), if you eat pork, salami made with veggie powder for nitrates/nitrites is by far best, due to broad spectrum elemental, fruits, low-oxalic greens,……. all good things. Beer, wine, and liquor can all be good in moderation. Salad greens are good eaten raw plain and/or with truly raw cheese, or raw milk as a dressing with some salt. Seriously,… all that should substantially live-in-up your shlong, and your whole body.

  • Does masturbation, such as 2 times a day or more decrease Testosterone levels? I heard sex increases testosterone if even for the moment of the day. I ask because if masturbation and ejaculation (male) does impact testosterone and energy, then certainly something to consider through a week/ goals and can be leveraged to advantage and productivity, such as semen retention for a couple days of a work week/ working towards high energy days of work and goal motivation to completion.

    • I'm totally with you.... I was 40 when i get in a longterm relationship (no kids) with a 28y old girl. Over time she gets bigger and bigger, she's a nice person to be with, but my attraction to her gets lost. I felt in a way guilty for that but can't help myself. Finally sex was more a duty for me. When she wants to end our relationship after 11y i was shocked at first but then after days i felt a great relief 🙄 The sad thing to say is too many carbohydrates destroyed our life. I could handle them in a way cause i do sports but she can't over time. She had a sitting job and no sports🤔.... If i had the knowledge of today... I would have changed our food😕

    • @@andreaspeters3773 as horrible it is to say, let’s face it- these agreements ARE transactional to some degree. It’s not good or bad. It just is. We marry women who we hope will stay the same (physically) and they marry men trying to change them from day 1. I’m begin I g to think our modern society isn’t cut out for marriage. With a 53% divorce rate, every other house you drive by with the nice landscaping, nice cars in the driveway, and pool in the back- they’re falling apart.

    • I’m doing keto, about 3 months in so far, lost 25lbs and my libido is more on fire than it has been for years… that being said I also have some ed issues and a supportive relationship… so I’ve been doubling my exercise, intermittent fasting and meditating daily. Things are definitely improving, though I still rely on some pharmaceuticals to keep the engine pumping. My testosterone tested low, but taking some measures at improving that as well. Good luck man!

Heart attack from a clot due to Kawasaki disease) inverted bifurcated carotid aneurysm just repaired) with clean carotid, a congenital defect, thin, healthy weight at 71, now a small aneurysm in the aorta! Again food (we are vegan), can’t clear these issues up. Testosterone levels fine.

  • Extremely clear and informative lecture, Doc. I have a unique situation where my T is down to 19 due to ADT drugs for metastatic prostate cancer (Ubeqa and Orgovyx), but I'm not having any significant ED issues. My oncologist puts it down to possivble hypersexuality ; he isn't quite sure. My theory, which I'd like your opinion on, is the power of the brain, the concept of sapiopsexuality, where one is attracted to intelligence and the other aspects (physical appearance, personality, etc.) after that. They have to all line up, of course. As males, we are also attracted to certain body types. Often, if those types change because of poor dietary and exercise habits, so our attraction and desire changes. Familiarity can also decrease desire. And these changes go both ways, so it's important that each partner "works" on themselves continuously (diet, exercise, education, etc.) I'm 61 and have a younger partner (38), so, once again, there are factors outside of the body chemistry at play also. I'd love to hear your take on that aspect -- which, admittedly, is more psychological.

I have since fell into a deep depression and gained 15lbs and stopped exercising. It doesnt matter anymore. My penis will never work again like it used to. These doctors dont know and dont care. Dont want to order any tests, cant do one corrective surgery. Modern medicine is a joke!
