Fasting is a great way to optimize your health, and it’s more approachable than you might think. It is a free tool that activates all the systems in your body to protect you, heal you, and help you live longer. Fasting can help to reduce inflammation, brain fog, and insulin resistance. It can also increase energy and bone density and activate autophagy, which is the process of cleaning out damaged cells.
In this episode of my new Masterclass series, I am interviewed by my good friend and podcast host, Dhru Purohit, about the many benefits of fasting. We also talk about the different types of fasting so you can determine if one is right for you.
Dhru Purohit is a podcast host, serial entrepreneur, and investor in the health and wellness industry. His podcast, Dhru Purohit Podcast, is a top 50 global health podcast with over 30+ million unique downloads. His interviews focus on the inner workings of the brain and the body and feature the brightest minds in wellness, medicine, and mindset.
This episode is brought to you by Rupa Health and ButcherBox.

  • At age 60 I looked 70. Age spots on my face and body, 50 pounds overweight, sick with high blood pressure, pre-diabetic, gout, joint pain… Now at age 65 after 3 years of low carb/Keto with intermittent fasting and fasting days, I look 50-55 years old. I lost 50 pounds and am down to a 32” waist, at 6’0” and I am now at 180 pounds. She lost 35 lbs. We totally cleared out our fridge and pantry, getting rid of all processed foods and oils. We use only coconut, avocado, olive and MCT oils, collagen powder, some supplements, like cod liver oil, and a variety of D, K, E, B- Complex… No more bread, pasta, or high starch vegetables. We buy whole natural foods and enjoy cooking healthy and wholesome meals. I do the cooking. We feel good and exercise regularly, and our sexuality has skyrocketed.

    • How do you do this when your a fussy eating all your life. I’ve been trying to fast for 17 hours. And I struggle. I also have a job as a baker! How do you do it ?

      @blc1960@blc19608 ай бұрын
    • @@blc1960 You educate yourself by learning all that you can on the right foods, recipes, choices…and what are the wrong foods and choices. Clean out your house of all the bad foods, oils, condiments, flour, sugar… Don’t eat out unless you know the food is appropriate for low carb and is quality, like a good steak with asparagus and some cauliflower… You have to devote yourself entirely. It not just fasting. Intermittent fasting is the next important step after replacing the foodstuffs. Once you are eating right and skipping the one meal so that you only eat super healthy for 6-8 hours, allowing for 16-18 hours of fasting in between, you will have made a big leap. The whole, healthy food you eat, fills you up faster, and satiates you longer. Watch KZhead videos by Dr. Fong and Dr. Mark Hyman and others. You either believe that you can do it and do have the strength, or you don’t. About the bakery, I cook delicious dishes for the week on fasting days or during my fasting hours.

  • So I have adopted biblical fasting so what that means is I prey while fasting and I just thank God for everything I have or if I have a problem or a health issue I prey while fasting that is a way to deny yourself to God and put him first and he will answer your prayers so what I do for example is maybe my dinner is at 7 then done eating by 8 so from 8 pm with no snacks untill noon next day so there is 16 hrs so then at noon I will have a lil lunch then fast again untill dinner at 7 pm so that is a total of 22 hrs fasting and preying and once you get into this type of habit just watch how your body heals itself and just watch how God will work in your life and heal you from things you are suffering from, God bless all who reads and adopts this Amen

So much good/bad advice out there...finding one's own sweet spot (v. sweet tooth!) is key. Not all bodies react to same diet.

  • As part of my 15-year fasting journey, in my early 60s I discovered that beginning my fast after the 6pm meal, by the time I wake up the next morning I'm already 12 hours into my 72 hours fast. Fasting is a mind game and I am happier knowing I only miss 2 full days of food - by the third day I eat dinner and break the fast - usually with a clear zucchini soup. I appreciate Dr. Hyman repeating that we need to listen to our bodies and do what works for us... we learn the hacks along the way. Bon chance!

    • It seems to be the wisest move to practice fasting, I know this from learning to fast starting when I was 17. The first thing I noticed was my mental clarity and a lot of Gods peace, fasting is a strange thing because you can rest but in the spiritual and physical realm you are advancing at light speed. Hallelujah that’s why instituted fasting as a spiritual discipline He knew it would be beneficial in both ways and recently they have found that fasting stops cancer and there has been cases recently where people stoped terminal stage 4 cancer hallelujah! Big pharma has been keeping this secret they can make money of prescribing fasting

  • I have been on various fasting regimes for 4 years now. it is a transition thing as I am now only eating either once or twice a week. i.e. 3 days of eating every 2 weeks (Fasting 5/4/5). Whole real foods. Zero 'processed' unless I do it myself. I feel great, tonnes of energy, I exercise (cycling), I walk, I sleep well. Constant nose breathing. Cold showers daily (sometimes 2 on exercise days). Zero hygiene products i.e No soap, no shampoo, no deoderant, I brush my teeth with water. Zero bad breath, no body odour. I only change my clothes once per week, they never smell. I have a hot bath once a week/fortnight with epson salts. Weight stable, no cravings, never hungry. Planning and preparing my food on eating days is a joy. Grass Fed meat nose to tail, fish, eggs, organic veg and fruits, do my own fermenting, make my own yogurt. Zero pastuerised products. All dairy is based on raw milk. Home made Bone Broth and Kvass. Combination of Water (Structured & Blessed), coffee and green tea on fasting days. Life is a breeze and remarkably calm and stress free even though I still encounter challenging situations which in the past would cause varying degrees of distress.

I love these videos and believe this fasting keto idea may not cure cancer but certainly helps manage it to keep me away from hospitals and white coats that exist, In my humble opinion, more as a profit driven business than health buiding business. Self love is also important and i believe its better to die while Im living than live while Im dead. • THANK GOODNESS FOR VIDEOS LIKE THIS! A great mindset for learning: REMEMBER The brain learns by repetition.....so learning OR DOING something new means the brain doesn't know..."YET". And therefore learning something you don't know is just 'UNFAMILIAR". The repetition will make the brain comfortable. But 1st its good to rewire how the brain sees learning something new. So SAY THIS TO YOURSELF: "This is hard to do or Learning something new is hard" Then hum ABC song this accomplishing to things its a distraction and whimsical gives a feel good vibe. Repeat 3x's(this literally will start to detach the "hard concept" cause you keep interrupting the pattern More advanced results: think of something you failed to do and so didn't try anymore doing....say to self "such and such was hard and I can't do it, it made me feel (fill in the blank). Then hum ABC song (3x's) If you do this now it will motivate you because the brain will stop automatically giving that message that things you don't know are hard to do.

  • I have been doing 18 hr fasts weekdays for several months now and I’m back to my high school weight…but what really helped me to stick to this was the Life Fasting Timer app …it was definitely a game changer for me .I’m working up to the 72 hour fast to trigger Autophagy to eliminate inflammation 🤞🤞

  • I’ve been pulling off 14-16hr dry fasts with easy chances of going longer while being active(on the clock💰, push-ups, squats, jumping jacks mainly, nothing intense), it really does depend on your body & how you utilize & train it

  • I'm 60, and have always been thin, fit and have a high metabolism. I'm in good health, exercise daily and take no prescription drugs. I stopped eating dairy last year because of a prostate cancer diagnosis. I eat a fairly low carb diet. I try to fast 14 hours. I'm constantly hungry and lose weight if I don't eat some carbs. I'm glad Dr. Hyman doesn't promote a one-size-fit's-all diet.

    • if yoyre constantly hungry your not doing something right. You may need more healthy fats in your diet. olive oil, nuts, coconut oil, fish, etc. glad to geE stopping dairy helped with your prostate cancer! That's amazing. Stopping dairy is very hard!

    • @@boromirofmiddleearth557 i hear what you’re saying, it’s conventional wisdom but not applicable to everyone. I have the same problem as mentioned above, especially when training (cycling) hard. As my body approaches its set point, the hunger is only satiated by carbs, if only temporarily.

  • Thank you Dr Hyman. I started wit intermittent fasting and manage the 18/4 easily the first week. Only ate lunch and dinner. Next week I will try one meal only. I am 79 and have a lot of health problems. The most painful one is poly myalgia and fibro myalgia. I am also borderline diabetic and too fat. 18 years ago I juice fasted for 62 days to fight cancer. FASTING should not be a problem for me.

    • Thank you Sir/Madam for sharing. Could you give me the details of juice fasting you did, how you started off eating normal again after the fasting ended. I would appreciate other tips based on your experience in doing the juice fasting. Please let me know exactly what juice. Did you completely avoid eating solid food for 62 days? Thank you Sir/Madam. Looking forward to receiving your reply

  • Dr. Hyman should have elaborated in detail regarding the process of autophagy that occurs during fasting. Dr. Yoshinori Ohsumi won the Nobel Prize in 2016 for Medicine or Physiology for uncovering the mechanisms and functioning of the process of autophagy which is triggered by and accelerates during fasting. Dr. Ohsumi discovered that our body has an intrinsic native intelligence inextricably intertwined in our DNA that instructs the body, among other things, to heal itself and maintain health. The natural process of autophagy is central to and a key biological process that makes fasting so effective and powerful in fixing and reversing many ailments especially during prolonged fasts.

  • I'm doing 19/5 which isn't difficult at all- The first thing I did was eliminate dairy and gluten from my diet which shut down cravings. Then I started baking gluten free and cooking healthy roasted veggie dishes and adopting a Paleo diet for plenty of good protein. In two weeks I've lost 12 pounds. No headaches, no problems, drinking water with added electrolytes and coffee with plant based sugar free creamer. I cannot emphasize how easy this is and how good I feel!

  • Love fasting. I've just retired from fighting pro mma , but still do grappling comps , to keep fit and sharp . But for years I was over training and body was in bits , bad knees carpal tunnel lower back pains, since I start fasting a couple years ago, all my pains have gone and my energy is great again. I do 24 hour every Monday and 16-8 Tuesday till Saturday, I've done 36 hours and the odd 78 hours . I have day off Sunday and if I need one or two days off in the week I do . Today I'm starting the one meal a day , giving it a go for 7 days. Going to be hard eating all my calories in just one hour 😂 Lets see my results in a week . But I will do fasting always now , I try all different ones see what's working best . But my energy off the 3 day fast was brilliant, I was happy for days ,like I was high on something 😂😂 If I could go back I would of done fasting all through my fighting career , no energy crashes, from all the carbs I got told u need for energy, thats not true, I have some much energy now I don't really eat carbs much, have them with my cheat meals now
