Brutally Honest Valedictorian Regrets Being Top of the Class
On May 30th, 2019, Kyle Martin (Tre in TKA's The Wreck of Echo 10-4: • The Wreck of Echo 10-4... ) addressed The King's Academy's Class of 2019 as its valedictorian. He's absolutely correct. I graduated from college with a 4.0 GPA, and with all the accolades you could possibly receive. Yet at the end of it, I felt tremendously empty. The struggle is real for overachievers. I sacrificed so many relationships and life experiences to get there. I ended up completely changing the direction I intended as my future career, and instead focused on family and personal growth . I ended up getting married just three years later and having four wonderful children over a ten year span. I decided to always prioritize my family (which a lot of my extended family thought was completely nuts) and not run the rat race for $$ and prestige. I ultimately became a freelance writer and a missionary. I have never looked back, although my parents have always subtly reminded me that I am a disappointment.
Do you what is best for you. I am an excellent student too but just earlier in my carrer I realized that this is not what I want. Although earning not as much as others, I am happy and enjoying simple things in life. Carreer and scholastical achivements are great for our Ego but not for our soul. And wisdom is not taught in schools,it's a lesson from experiences the life itself has given you and made you . It's more personal and much more humane and from that it makes you the best person you could ever be. Now, I have two teens I told them just choose whatever they like to achieve and just be happy.
The ending is too real. Parents want you to do what makes you happy as long as they are happy 😊
Your parents probably believed the path of overachieving was the path for you. To be honest, I think you did the right thing. You should give yourself a pat on the back. Choices like these aren’t easy. But hey, you did it. So proud of ya.
you guys are doing great in life. your parents might say u r a disappointment but deep down they know that you achieved what you wanted. go on my brother, do what you're best at.... all my well wishes with you ❤️❤️
@@Ashley-cr4tf there's no such thing as over achieving they taught me hard work and success and wanted me to do well because they love me. @@zodlord5669 i get your point. Of course you can't compare someone who was born in Africa in the middle of nowhere to someone who was born in europe or the US. Thank you so much for your brilliant and honest thoughts. Just 4 days ago, I graduated being among the top 5 of my class and instead of celebrating, I was completely down because of the price I had to pay for this and the sacrifices I've made. It felt almost as if I betrayed my values and myself for this accomplishment and I'm having such a hard time to make my family and friends understand what I am feeling and that it is not a bad thing but rather a moment of clarity and sincerity I never felt before. So thank you again, your speech gave me hope!

What followed was the greatest 7 years of my life. What was a huge disappointment to my family was the greatest thing that has ever happened to me. Those days are over now and I’m back to a meaningless, depressing existence. For any young people watching this video, don’t let ANYONE decide your future for you. @@WxddlesHimself I don’t know what your experience with religion is. I don’t know if you happened to met someone who claimed to be religious but was just a terrible person or if you simply base your opinion off of random stuff you see on the internet. But let me tell you that in general religious people (or at least Christians and people who follow religions similar to Christianity since I can’t speak for all religions) are people who strive to a good person and help make the wold around them and the lives of others better. Of course there are bad ones but that should hardly be generalized to all of us. With a clear head and open mind you will likely find that most of the bad things about religious people aren’t even true

Honestly, this is what happened during my elementary school. As a valedictorian in my elementary school, I felt... empty. It felt great. I was ecstatic when they called my name. I was shaking. I was nervous. But after I got to the stage, everything went away. Life didn't have any "happily ever after," and that experience of nothingness reminded me that. I woke up the next day with no goal in mind. I was having school breaks. I was playing video games. But I felt like something was missing. I spent the next 6 years with little to no accomplishments, I feel like I've been circling around aimlessly. Another goal's done, then what? Have another goal, but what comes after? It all just proves my endless sacrifices for obsession with grades and academic achievements. I've lost my identity. My mental health has at many times hit the lowest points in my life.
Hey man, Sorry to hear how you feel. I truly hope you find a direction, my friend. I'm sure in all the nothingness, the pieces are falling together for you. I suffer from a deep sense of loneliness, but I believe for you and I that we'll feel that sense of purpose/comfort someday. I hope you enjoy the rest of your life, my friend.
The concept of the 'rat race' is what plagues this world. But I would suggest to look inwards, think what makes you feel excited, and if you can't, try new things and find what fills you with life, not caring for societal norms, because until what point is success worth it? Don't live life wandering aimlessly, try to find what it is that excites you.
The motto at my sons previous school was ‘joy if rigor’, very Christian value. It’s not about achieving a goal, it’s about working the best you can at something for the sake of working hard at something.
You are exactly the person this young man is speaking to. The meaning you are looking for can only be found in God. Look to him and you will find what is missing in your life.
Oh my god! I totally feel the same, it's just that i have spent 6 months with little to no goals, like.... i'm just taking school breaks.
Little did he know that year of hard work got him here so he can send his message to millions.

Wait so this guy is a high school graduate?? He looks and sounds like a college graduate...
I know right. I thought it was college. Till I started reading comments. Good for him.
My daughter went to King's in 5th grade she read & tested at a college freshman level, 2 hours of homework a day. Class won National Prize went to D.C. visited supreme Court with Barbara Bush
Robert awsome good for her
@JP Duffy Don't worry about dedicated educated young people from the inner cities and most large public school systems. NYC has over 75% failure rate. I went to Catholic schools and your off base with religious zealots. If a person wants to believe in God and be well educated, your argument is what. I was amazed at the number of religious fanatics coming out of U.C. Berkley.
@JP Duffy I misunderstood your point. Very intellectual thought process.
Me watching this: Valedictorian guy: I’ve won, but at what cost.
I WAS one of these and he is SO right. Felt EXACTLY the same thing. SO much sacrifice to get there compared to the prize. He just put it into words. 🙏🏻

Oikawa Tooru it’s way more than just stress. It’s enormous amount of time of your life. Sacrificing the “fun“ things other people get to do for years. This valedictorian speaker is not only smart, but he is also very wise. He's absolutely correct about the importance of building relationships. No man is an island.
Is he wise? what fucking universe are you from? if you believe in a god, you have some trouble brewing in your mind, and you limit yourself by that, if you have a religion, you will never be wise, nor one anyone should listen to. He is not wise, he sounds more possesed.

@@noblehazards9713 I did not say anything about raising them, I'm talking about being good mentors. My school was filled with controversies. Read my message fully and thoroughly.
noblehazards problem is with your statement is that yes they aren’t meant to raise these kids but they kind of treat them that way. These people command you around telling you it’s for your own good when really looking back , that grade mattered so they got payed. It goes two ways , they faculty is rarely well supported and leads to teacher treating it like a desk job rather than nurturing a future generation. The students are filled with bullshit they will never use and that same construct for about 12 years will lead to you kids who feel like they were wronged by these systems

He doesn’t regret being valedictorian, he’s saying there’s a lot more important things then just book knowledge, grades and being the smartest. Go do things you love, spend time with friends, family, don’t stress about things that really don’t matter in the grand scheme of things, etc. Don’t waste your time overly obsessed with just 1/2 things. Do it all
If u want to be at the top , then forget about family time and other things that u like to spend, ur statement is contradictory, u can't have both
@@Accidental26 true you can’t be the best if you don’t dedicate everything because there is someone out there who will dedicate everything
@@Accidental26In certain cases It’s still possible to spend *time* with the people you love and care for. This means alot for me in all honestly. Pointing out that its all about our character and how to potray our lives is by far the most important lessons anyone could achieve. Appreciation is a moment to take pride and pleasure in considering of all the time and patience especially the amount of sacrifices that our own parents or guardians invested into us. Everybody won't have the same upbringing and it isnt practically my place to say advise, but please remember that someone out there is willing to take your hands to aid you from the struggles you'll experience. I once heard a wise man say " number one is not an achievement, it's a prison forcing you to dedicate your life to a temporary title." And that's the lesson this man discovered
