  • "You're not with a 'person of color'; you're with a person." I learned this lesson in about 1968, when my small-town public school hired one of its first black faculty members, to teach 4th grade. My mom was a teacher's aide, and came home and related this story over the dinner table. She had been in the teachers' break room when a white fellow teacher asked the newly hired staffer, "Do you prefer to be called 'black', 'negro', or 'African-American'?" The new 4th grade teacher looked the woman right in the eye and replied, "I prefer to be called Mrs. Humphries." I never forgot that lesson, and I am grateful that in 1968, my mother saw fit to bring it home to my two younger brothers and me.

I never heard it until well into the 1990's. When I was growing up in Atlanta the term that older people used was "colored". By the late 1960's "black" pretty much became the dominant term. • Bill is a classical liiberal. Definition per: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Liberalism Woke is explicitly _illiberal_ . Intentionally. It just occurs on what the US regards as the politically "liberal" ("progressive") side of the aisle (in Australia, the Liberal party is actually the conservative/right-leaning party). But liberalism (again, above definition) spans both sides of the aisle. Marxian critique of liberalism (again, definition above) is a core pillar of Critical Theory, including Critical Race Theory. They see liberal ethics, neutral principles of law, freedom of speech, etc, etc, as part of a grand conspiracy to keep minorities in their place. Not a joke. "Critical Race Theory: An Introduction" (Delgado/Stefancic) says this explicitly.

  • As a Thai person born and bred in Thailand, the first time I remember coming across this phenomenon was the criticism the movie The Impossible received. I watched it in a Bangkok theatre with a thai audience and the overwhelming consensus was that it was a deeply powerful movie that treated its subject (an English family experience of the 2004 tsunami disster), Thailand and Thai culture with respect and reverence. Only when I went online did I see the hate the movie got for showing only the white experience. As if human pain and suffering isnt universal.

    • Yes and movies are typically made that focus on their target audience to be more relatable. It was a great movie and i thought also treated the Thai culture with dignity, and people i know in Thailand were directly effected, but i understood that a movie is not a social justice showcase, but a powerful story. Progressive "liberals" are making the country go backwards.

  • That last minute really is the best reflection of reality. I work in a professional department of analysts and developers. Our boss is a black woman, one of our developers is a black man, and half my remaining coworkers are of east Asian or south Asian descent. We're a very diverse department but have never once brought it up because it's frankly never occurred to us to do so. We don't notice each others' races when we're on calls with each other, or spending hours at a time trying to solve problems together. We like each other, work well together, occasionally argue, but ultimately respect each other and our boss is the biggest reason for that. Racism will only go away once we've spent decades working together, hanging out with each other, marrying each other, and just generally living together. It won't be solved by flagellation or trying to tip the scales the other way.

In modern american parlance, it usually equates to "left wing" but it can also mean somewhat who supports classical liberalism, which could be seen as right wing, libertarian, or left wing, depending. Radical left wingers who lean towards communism/socialism often use "liberal" as an insult, i.e., someone who is on the american left but still supports capitalism to some degree, or someone who doesn't fully oppose it, or someone who is a moderate "reformer" as opposed to a radical revolutionary.)

The boyfriend of one of the girls in the group discussion came over to join in and immediately started talking to our friend Ishmael (a Nigerian man) about slavery (Ishmael came to the US in 2004. I doubt he has many American slaves in his family legacy. The boyfriend didn't care to ask though). He kept trying to emphasize how aware he was that slavery was wrong and presented himself to be on "Ishmaels side" as a white guy. Ishmael interrupted him after about 2 straight minutes of self aggrandizement and said in his thick accent "It's ok man. Honestly, trying this hard not to be racist makes you look racist. I loved everything about it: the way Bill skillfully organized his thought processes, the hilarious cringe-inducing clip from "Bad Teacher", the reactions from each of his guests, the fact that Bill took up for Noah Rothman (They have different political views, but so what?? It was rude for the director to tell the cameraman to focus on him at that specific moment, so I'm glad Bill called it out). I haven't laughed this hard all day today! 🤣 I don't remember the exact situation, but I have heard Bill say that he writes the final New Rules himself. I dont always agree with the guy but this is definitely something that needs to be addressed. Although im sure a lot of people who on the left arent necessarily too far gone down the progressive path, probably just not as vocal seeing how this whole new self flagellating and racism of low expectation is making it's way on media outlets and even some universities and colleges. Like he said at the end, the focus on race( hell, anything regarding identity really) when around other people is the problem, their character and personality is what matters. Basically the argument that we shouldnt "see" race, or atleast not let thoses things change how we act around others. Next step would be encouraging people to realise that pushin to change with a tribalistic and aggressive actions doesnt work, the best way about it and really that should be a given regarding living together and working together, is an open discussion and possibility to debate to make everyone's actual position clearer and encouraging people to tolerate those that arent mirror copies of themselves. (well, live and let live would be a good start.) All and all, i miss when the term liberal and the western left wasnt being tarnished by radical progressives and what seems to be a fringe but almost encouraged authoritarian left. Where did I say there isn't any racism today? There are some instances where being racist is illegal, but like it or not, people get to feel/believe as they wish, as stupid as their belief's may be. People make up political parties btw.....and attitudes in each have changed over time. I'm not arguing with you, all I've said is when you use the word "historically" you need to first go back and look at a party's record.

To be honest neocons would use identity politics when it suits them, if it’s a tool they can exploit to fight a war. For example our foreign policy towards Israel relies on white Evangelicals who think we need to have Jews in Jerusalem for Jesus to return. That’s explicit identity politics.
