    • No, but they did make him obsolete. He more than likely flew missions in both Iraq wars and Afghanistan over the 30 some odd years he was in the service and despite his war record and all that, they still treat him like crap. They should be begging a pilot of his skill to teach at Top Gun full time, given how crap those graduates were compared to him but they basically want a reason to get rid of him.

      @RMJ1984@RMJ1984 Жыл бұрын
    • @@Anarchist86ed well tbf, he has a huge track record of disorderly conduct, which on paper makes him seem like a bad leader (which kinda showed when he didn't keep his classroom in check when rooster lost his shit on hangman. Any other leader would've shut that shit down immediately before it got out of hand, but that would also not make for a fun film lol). Just because he's really really good doesn't mean it would be a guarantee that it would translate to being a good instructor, at least to his chain of command. Heck if it wasn't for Iceman he would've been kicked out a while ago, and he'd be lucky to not get a dishonorable discharge. So all the animosity from Vice Admiral Simpson, as well as others, is extremely justified.

      @GrantedBunion@GrantedBunion Жыл бұрын
    • @@GrantedBunion True, but like I said... those pilots were nowhere near his skill. You'd think they'd be like "Listen, Mav, quit being a child and grow up. We need you to teach these kids everything you know. If you don't, forget about your pension and benefits because we've got enough insubordination on you to lock your ass up. Straighten up and fly right, or else." Instead they just kinda tell him he's what's wrong with how things should be done and he's gotta go. Meanwhile they've trained a bunch of pilots who couldn't even get a target lock on him. You'd figure they'd be a little more tolerant of his ways given how badly they're training their pilots.

In the original because Mavericks the POV character you are totally onboard with the skilled young pilot who want to bend the rules, break the mould and push boundaries. But in the sequel you see Hangman how everybody else saw Maverick, a damn good pilot, but a bit of an arse who you couldn't really rely on because they were only interested in themselves how needs to learn a lesson about what it means to be a team.

He knows that Maverick has actual combat experience and is very, very good at dog fighting so he takes no chances and gets ready to rock while the other hot dogs get caught with their pants down and end up getting schooled hard. • @John Carlson There's a lot more CGI in Maverick than many probably realize (especially the bombing run in the third act). But most of it is done as a complement to all of the brilliant live-action photography and practical flying. And as far as I know, all of the cockpit interiors are practical, including the shots where CGI was added in the environments you see through the canopies.

      @ThePoorBoy@ThePoorBoy Жыл бұрын
    • @John Carlson The reason why this film works so well is because all the live action is shot for real in the foreground, and the CGI os used in the background, where it’s less noticeable from a visual perspective.

Rooster’s head is on a swivel the entire time the two of them are “chatting” because he knows Maverick is out there somewhere. When Maverick casually rolls up from underneath them, stating “been here the whole time” and “can you see me now” all Hangman can humbly say is “holy $hit”…. no cockiness from him this time… It’s like he’s finally realized he’s in the presence of a true master…

He tells Rooster in this clip that he has the shot on Mav and to take it. He sucks up his pride before the mission to give encouraging words to Rooster. He is genuinely happy when the target is hit. • Pilots are a different breed. I was in a NAS training squadron during Vietnam (wasn't easy being the only female in Avionics!) One thing I learned, whatever you tell the pilot they can't do, they will! One was "Don't buzz the tower!" Another was for the harrier pilots, "Don't take off with a vertical jet jump!" We loved it of course. The best day I ever had was the day the Blue Angels were coming in for a weekend show. My job that day was to work on an aircraft at the end of the line. The runway was on a peninsula so the view from the cockpit was beautiful. Then I looked up and saw the Blue Angels were flying in! Not just flying in, doing all kinds of theatrics and it was like I was the only one in the world watching. that had a fantastic view! Siting high in the cockpit watching this amazing show. Then they landed right in front of me, incredible landing one after the other nose to tail and they even parked in unison. What a great memory. Another thing watching this video I remembered the pilots' helmets. They couldn't mess up their flying gear except the helmet and they had some crazy ones, funny ones. and some reallt artistic, wish someone had done a study on pilot helmet artwork!

    • Ice wasn’t So much better than Mav tho. He was just a lot less “risky”. Mav was more of a hot head is all. But just SKILL they are basically even. Especially in an exercise scenario like this, what you see with Mav is basically the same way ice would do. Except the personal battle between he and rooster

      @krsbrisbane@krsbrisbane Жыл бұрын
    • @@krsbrisbane yea no. Ice had more skill than mav. What he didn’t have was mav’s mentality. That’s why ice was always in first place during top gun while mav was 2nd. Mav nd goose wasn’t supposed to even be in top gun in the first place. What separated Mav from the other pilots was his ability to rebel.

    • @@motionlessmerc8936 that’s a good point. There was a lot of CGI and doctoring in this scene though. They probably didn’t use the intercom audio from the actual plane, or the sound wouldn’t be movie quality clean. They likely had to add those annunciations back in later during editing. There was another scene where Phoenix and Bob get an engine fire after a bird strike. They added that audio back in (ENGINE FIRE, RIGHT!) as well for accuracy. They did an excellent job!

  • The raw emotion this scene gives off is palpable, especially with Rooster. You can feel the frustration, anger, and even heartbreak coming off of him. 1 objection, though. The F/A-18 can't do cobra maneuvers like that, but oh well, minor details.

      @AirmanRugby6@AirmanRugby6 Жыл бұрын
    • @Hotshot! Well I said some of, not the greatest. Their greatness can be attributed solely to the fact that you’re not getting those shots without the use of multi-million dollar military equipment. For a point of comparison, I’d probably point to Leni Riefenstahl’s Triumph of the Will. Personally, I’ve always loved the through the window shot in Fritz Lang’s M.

    • One of the many reason why so many movies are so bad are those shaky camara moves and lense flares. I don't know exactly when it started but in the last few years it made many movies really really bad. Character running, shaky shaky. Character fighting shaky shaky. Character using a firearm shaky shaky. I sometime feel like a hung over sailor. It's awful. So I welcomed this fabulous camera work.
