Why Shelties are the best dogs!

Here is a short video of our dog Hannah. If you are considering a pet breed, I'd like to make the case for Shelties. They are extremely smart, loyal, and all around great dogs to have! Enjoy!

  • I rescued an abused Sheltie and she was such a wonderful girl! She was chained up in a muddy pig pen, matted and filthy. Her leg had been broken from being kicked and the white tip of her tail was missing. It too two tubs of water to clean her and she was so starved for the affection she let me take the time to clip all the matted hair with scissors. She had been fed gross cheap food and bread and I gave her good meat. She adjusted well to my home and we had such a good time. We played hide and seek and tag, and played in the snow. She got on the bed with me every morning and woke me by sticking her cold wet nose in my arm pit to hear me squeal! She was the best guard dog I've ever had and was super protective of me and my baby. She was the first one e to make him smile. Shes been gone 24 years and I still cry over her.

    • I can't take reading this. How could ANYBODY ever hurt snd abuse such beautiful and intellegrnt little Sheltie Collie Dog's like this. i hate prople, I really, really hate people like this out there.

    • @@danbasta3677 How can anybody hurt any dog or any pet? Some people are so cruel and if I had my way everyone that abused or abandoned any pet would be in jail. Our fur babies feel pain, love, hunger, hot, cold, etc. just like we do. The only difference is they don't show pain like we do unless it's really bad 😥😥😥 M Paxton, What a special person you are!! She couldn't had been healthy going through all of that but I sure hope she is now and enjoying the good life she should have had all along! Another thing that upsets me is when people abandon older dogs just because they are old 😤 Some have actually admitted they took their older dogs to a rescue because they wanted to get a puppy instead. I wouldn't let someone like that adopt any dogs or cats ever!! If someone loves their fur babies when they are young they will love them when they are old, too. 💖

    • @@JustMe-ec2ph How could anyone do such a thing? I guess they would drop an elderly parent off at the cheapest place they could find. I told my daughters I never want to go to a place like that. I had to go to a Rehab once and they also housed elderly patients. It was horrible. They almost killed me twice by giving me the wrong medication and I had asked them each time what meds they were giving me. The problem was the girl who handed out the meds didn't know what they were and just told me what she thought they were. I know, I digress. Shelties are beautiful, wonderful dogs. I love my Laddie and don't know how anyone could hurt these beautiful, sensitive animals.

    • @@katlovesdogs4119 I don't know how they could except they are just horrible people to start with 😒 It's a good thing you were paying attention when your meds were handed to you. I hope you reported them for what they did to you and others. Probably best to do that after you finished Rehab. Yes, Shelties are beautiful, wonderful dogs. I have my third one now but my other dogs I had before them were wonderful, too. I just wish all pets could have loving and caring homes. They give so much and ask for so little. I never get totally over my fur babies that passed on. It leaves a sadness in me that doesn't go away but focusing on my fur babies that were/are still with me helps me a lot. They don't take the place of the ones that have passed but just creates another spot in our hearts to love them, too. 💖🐶

  • I have owned shelties ever since 1985, which is when I got my first one. It was in a cage in a pet store and was the only puppy that was too shy to interact with the other dogs. It was so adorable that I asked if I could hold it and it MELTED into my arms. My wife and I literally had to take out a loan to buy that dog, but I could not leave it behind. It slept next to my bed and waited for me to wake up every morning, whereupon it would jump up on the bed and start kissing me. It was so affectionate that I had to beg it to please stop licking my face. I am currently on my fourth and fifth shelties, both of which are rescue dogs. These two dogs came with some emotional 'baggage' that I have been dealing with since day one. Shelties are easier to train when raised from puppyhood, but it's incredibly rewarding to give an unwanted dog a new life, so from now on I'll only consider rescue dogs.

    • How could anyone not want a Sheltie Collie? Oh, wait, found my little Cassie at the Beaver County humane shelter. She was there a day and a half when I found her, the LOUDEST Dog there barking, had to have her this instsnt! Paid my adoption fee, snd she's been my very BEST, BEST friend ever since. Clean Dog to, she won't do number 1 or 2 in the house, prefers to be outside running around the house as I own 125 acres of ground in Pennsylvania. I love her forever MORE!

We ALL knew he was the one because we could tell how intelligent and loving he was. He past away at age 16 and I have NEVER forgotten him (tears). He is up in Heaven with my beloved Mom and Dad and they all are young and happy.

  • I have a 9 year old Sheltie that I have had since he was 9 weeks old. He is my baby boy and I love him so much. He was the runt of the litter and only weighs 14 pounds. Also, he is a black and white one. Boufford (his name) is so smart, and he just loves everyone, including all animals. Although he exhibits many Sheltie traits, he is not so typical. He really isn't shy and loves being around people, even though his daddy (me) is always his first priority. Boof is so much fun, loves to play, and is so loyal and loving. It barely took me one week to train him to go outside. Yes, he is quite vocal at times, but doesn't go over board with it. Shelties are a wonderful breed and as all dogs should be considered, part of the family!!!

  • The Shelties looked much more furry in the pictures I saw, the coat looks much more manageable in this picture.

  • I like all dogs. However if you want the ride of your life . . the sheltie is a solid choice. They have a sweet spirit. Their intelligence is off the charts.

  • My dad brought my first dog when I was 5, and it was a Sheltie. We named her Heidie. I'm 37 now so she's been dead for quite a while. I've been without a dog for about 2 years after my last dog, a Cocker Spaniel died. Think I'm going to get myself another Sheltie!

  • I have a sheltie named Lexi. I've never had any other dogs besides shelties and didnt realize how dumb they make other dogs seem. teaching Lexi things took very little time and effort. I can tell Lexi to go and touch an object on the floor (shoe, sock, ect.) and she will run up to it and just put her paw on it. I taught her this one day when i was bored and needed to pass time. thats how easy it is. she also gives "kisses" when you ask her to and knows many hand commands. Best dogs ever!

  • They are brave and loyal and fun-loving dogs truly I agree they are the best dogs in the world but they bark a lot and they can be willful. This one is very obedient and smart so this is an excellent dog. But sometimes they can be barky troublemakers but those are the ones you love the most like my girl Scarlett who died several years ago but I still love her the most.

  • I recommend shelties to anyone who would like a loyal, affectionate, intelligent dog who is excellent with children. They are incredibly easy to train, do not make a mess inside or damage anything, do not growl at little ones, etc. I've had 2 bi-coloured (black & white) girls, Suki & Squirt. Suki lived 14 years and Squirtie was JUST diagnosed with liver/kidney issues :'( at 11 years. Squirtie has had the occasional seizure (1-2 times a year in her elder years), and developed hypothyroidism. I know I am biased, but if you want a dog that show you love like no other, a sheltie is the dog you want! :)

  • You have just listed all the reasons I have had shelties for 53 years. Ps my shelties figured out if I spelled their favorite things what I was talking about. Samwize a male I had for 12 years could identify over a dozen of his toys ..then I got to busy to keep working on extending his vocab. But he learned other things ..like back up, turn on the fan, get the phone. ..if he saw something he benefited from he learned in 2 or 3 tries. It pays to talk to shelties.

  • For the people freaked out that she's in a crate, dogs don't think about it the same way. They're denning animals and sack out for 16 hrs a day, so I doubt sleeping in the cage all day is a big deal to her. Dogs actually prefer to feel safe on their sides, above and behind when laying down. We had a crate for our sheltie, left the door open, and he went in there to sleep because he wanted to.
