Snow On Tha Bluff: JCole.lnk.to/SnowOnThaBluff
Produced by J. Cole & Wu10
Niggas be thinkin I’m deep/intelligent, fooled by college degree
My IQ is average, there’s a young lady out there she way smarter than me
I scrolled through her timeline in these wild times and I started to read
She mad at these crackers, she mad at these capitalists, mad at these murder police,
She mad at my niggas, she mad at our ignorance, she wear her heart on her sleeve
She mad at the celebrities, low key I be thinkin she talking bout me
Now I ain’t no dummy to think I’m above criticism so when I see something that’s valid I listen
But Shit, its something about the queen tone that’s bothering me
She strike me as somebody blessed enough to grow up in conscious environment
With parents that know bout the struggle for liberation and in turn they provided with
A perspective and awareness of the system and unfairness that afflicts em
And the clearest understanding of what we gotta do to get free,
And the frustration the fills her words seems to come from the fact that most people don’t see
just cuz you woke and I’m not, that shit ain’t no reason to talk like you better than me
How you gon lead, when you attacking the very same niggas that really do need
The shit that you saying? instead of conveying you holier come help get us up to speed
Shit it’s a reason it took like 200 years for our ancestors just to get freed
These shackles be lockin the mental way more than physical, I look at freedom like trees
Can’t grow a forest like overnight, hit the ghetto and slowly start planting your seeds
Fuck is the point of you preaching your message to those that already believe what you believe?
I’m on some “fuck a retweet”, most people is sheep,
You got all the answers but how you gon reach?
If I could make one more suggestion respectfully I would say it’s more effective to treat
People like children, understanding the time and love and patience that’s needed to grow,
This change is inevitable but ain’t none of us seen this before
Therefore we just gotta learn everything as we go,
I struggle with thoughts on the daily
Feel like a slave that somehow done saved enough coins to buy his way up outta slavery
Thinking just maybe, in my pursuit to make life so much better for me and my babies
I done betrayed the very same people that look at me like I’m some kind of a hero
Because of the zeros that’s next to the commas, but look here I promise I’m not who you think
Ran into this nigga outside of the store yesterday he said something that had me like “wait”,
He was like “Cole, preciate what you been doin My nigga, that’s real” but damn, why I feel faker Than snow on the bluff?
well maybe cuz deep down I know I ain’t doing enough,
The sun is shining today
The sun is shining today
The sun is shining today
Can you walk with me? I hope we’ll find
the reason why we often sob. Go on cry.
Painful memories fuck up the vibe
though I be trying to let the time heal my mind.
I was once a child, I’ve gotten older
Still, I know I’m just a boy in Gods eyes.
Fill me up with wisdom and some courage,
plus endurance to survive help mine thrive

    • So they should what? Stay silent? There is value in showing other people that they aren't alone. Changing minds? Maybe not, but there is no changing minds in 2021. You're never going to convince someone that Breonna Taylor deserved to live. Because the people who say she deserved it don't have human feelings and can never change. They don't matter. Preaching to them would be like preaching to leeches or rats.

    • I get where you’re coming from, and J cole talks about this later in the song he says something along the lines of how people need to be treated gently, and how people are attacking the same people that need to hear what we are saying. Of course don’t stay silent, but talk with respect and listen to the other person, which reminds me of a TED talk about a guy who got some KKK leader to leave the clan just by having a lot of conversations, and having mutual respect. Don’t give up hope!

    • That really isn't the point of the song. Literally a few lines later J cole admits that he hasn't done anywhere near enough to help his community and in his success he left behind so many people that are still suffering from oppression. The point of the song is J Cole admitting he is in a positon of power where he can really make a difference, where as this random black girl on twitter has not outlit outside of Twitter to actually get her message out there.

  • The experiences that we’ve all been going through these past couple years gets summed up very well in this song. I feel the fact that there are so many of us being touched by Cole’s lyrics shows how regardless of who we are as individuals we all still have these parallel lives that we all feel together. Sometimes we get so caught up in the “i” and “me” that we forget everyone is experiencing “i” and “me” at the same time together. So when we listen and hear an artist like Cole or Lamar and they speak on those things that they experience through the artistic language of the soul that is music, we get an opportunity to use their perspective to step out of our similar experiences and live it in someone else’s shoes. Then when we all gather to go see these artist at their shows we have this underlined understanding that everyone who’s seeing these artist perform came to feel that seem feeling i feel when I listen to them. It’s like an appreciation of all of our lives as we live them together sometimes even when we don’t realize it.

    • @@echopin6412 listening to the entire song I think the problem is he simultaneously acknowledges she has a point, but at the same says she needs to change how she brings it up. At the time this was released there were much bigger things to worry about, and it feels like he took time out to tell everyone she makes him feel insecure with the way she approaches things. The fact that he expresses respect for her, her intelligence, and her ideas on and off the song, only makes his choice to make this song stranger. Really all he did with this song is reveal he’s insecure with the level of responsibility people ascribe to him when it comes to important issues like this, which is fine and could’ve made for an interesting song. Nut he chose to include her and her tone as if that’s a major contributing factor. If he’s insecure he’s insecure. Her tone wouldn’t changed that. By the end of the song he laments on how he feels fake when a fan appreciates all that he’s done, so instead of taking time out to call out Noname, why not do research, take actions, or do anything to make himself feel like he’s doing something worthwhile that he deserves credit for? I feel like he made a mistake with this song.

There’s a massive difference between being intelligent in life and how you perform academically. Some people think, just because someone sounds smart, that means they’re smart, and that usually indicates that persons IQ.

    • @@1Leggo9my9Eggo2 he performed quite well academically so IDK what you're talking about. Generally when smarter people talk, you can hear the intelligence in the words they say and the perspective they bring. • Toni Odejimi All the lines are directly connected to Noname’s earlier behaviour on the internet. “How you gon’ lead, when you attackin’ the very same nigga’s that really do need the shit that you sayin’?” Is connected to noname calling out J.cole and Kendrick performing and entertaining an over abundance of white people. For example that one moment Kendrick gave spotlight to some white girl who wasn’t allowed to say the N word. Noname is focused on helping and elevating the black audience. This song is 100% about noname, I can guarantee that to anyone. J.cole is speaking down on a black woman that pulled quistionable shit in the past and takes it to the extreme. In these fucking times, J.cole is weak for this, video gets a dislike. I reccomend you look up J.cole and Noname right now on google. But y’know, I’m just a nobody that no one is going to believe, just wait for the “official” videos and news. That’s what people listen to. 🥴
