    • no they need a barrier or some sort of fence surrounding their pool so they can’t fall into the pool in the first place or MAYBE they should not let the dogs outside when they leave their house. a ramp wouldn’t do anything, they already have steps in their pool and the dog did not use them.

    • Right. Years ago I had a small goldfish pond in my backyard and my chihuahua slipped in it while I was at work. When I got home I couldn't find him in the house (had a doggy door) so I went outside to look for him. He was hanging on to the side of the pond with all his might and I have no idea how long he'd been like that. It was frighting thinking he could have drowned. I can say that he never went near that little pond again and you couldn't make him go near it. He learned from his experience.

    • Long time resident of Florida here. There is another option. Show your pets where the steps are and they will know how to get out. Cats have no problem climbing out because they are more agile. Only one drawback, you will not be able to keep them out of the water, because they love to swim. This same thing happened to me 40 years ago. I had just moved into my first pool home and was lucky find my dog in time. I shoved my other dog in who was actually trying to help my other dog in the water. I walked to the steps and called them, they swam to the steps, and easily got out. To this day I still kindly tell people that have dogs and pools the story, as a warning. I can not count the times that they say, my dog stays away from the pool. Well all I can say, is accidents happen.

    • Agreed. My mother actually just went through this with our elderly dog who did drown in the pool. I can't remember exactly how old he was, but he was almost completely deaf and it was normal for him to not come inside when called, and my idiot mother left him outside one night and went to bed like she had done a couple of times before, and went out the next morning and saw him in the pool. She'll live with that regret for a long time. Just because you have a pet dog and they know where the pool is, that doesn't mean they're incapable of slipping into it, and they have almost no chance of getting back out unless they just so happen to slip into VERY shallow stairs.

I watched another one where this guy took his dogs rock climbing, and that idiot fell off the cliff and pulled both the dogs off the cliff with him. The guy died and someone said all those dogs were so loyal they stayed with them. Both those dogs broke all four of their legs. So it probably wasn't so much loyalty as it was they couldn't walk. And this video proves it... leaving a small dog unattended at a pool it can't get out of by itself and then thinking it's a "freak accident". Lmao. It's very common for small animals to drown in pools, because the walls are too high for them. • A friend's family had 2 dogs years ago. One of their teenage children left the house, thinking both dogs were inside the house. He forgot something and returned to the house to retrieve it. Upon entering the house, he heard barking and scratching sounds. He walked into the room to find one dog inside and could see the other outside in the pool frantically trying to get out. The dog inside had scratched up the carpet, pulled down drapes, scratched and bitten the handle & lock on the sliding glass door. The carpet was spotted with blood from his mouth & paws, as he was trying to get out to help his friend. As soon as he opened the sliding glass door, his dog rushed out and jumped in the pool to help his buddy. The dog who ran to rescue his friend was a herding breed mix. I was told this story one day as we were spending time at their pool. I had asked why one dog kept "herding" the other dog away from the pool. I said "It looks like he doesn't want her to go into the pool." That's when they recounted the story of what had happened months before. They said previously both dogs had enjoyed the pool. But after that event, the herding dog did not want his pal to get near the pool again.

Rats--regular lab rats--have been shown to do so--rescue a rat not related to themselves under controlled laboratory settings. They get very attached to their cage mates. But I don't think it has even been proven in dogs. This proves it to me once and for all. No question. A lot of social animals have emotions just like humans--rats, crows and jays, parrots, elephants, dolphins, wolves. It promotes their survival, but usually of family members!

  • You know, as heartwarming as this is, I'm actually more fascinated at Jessie's process of on the spot problem solving, and how Jessie and Chucky worked together as a team to solve the problem, with no human intervention whatsoever. There was definite trial and error, adding what worked, discarding what didn't- there was high level problem solving here. Fascinating.
