Lyrics:
If I give up the seat I've been saving
To some elderly lady or man
Am I being a good boy?
Am I your pride and joy?
Mother please, if you please, say I am
And if while in the course of my duty
I perform an unfortunate take
Would you punish me so
Unbelievably so
Never again will I make that mistake
This feeling inside me could never deny me
The right to be wrong if I choose
And this pleasure I get
From say winning a bet
Is to lose
When I'm drinking my Bonaparte Shandy
Eating more than enough apple pies
Will I glance at my screen
And see real human beings
Starve to death right in front of my eyes
Nothing old, nothing new, nothing ventured
Nothing gained, nothing still-born or lost
Nothing further than proof, nothing wilder than youth
Nothing older than time, nothing sweeter than wine
Nothing physically, recklessly, hopelessly blind
Nothing I couldn't say
Nothing why 'cause today
Nothing rhymed
This feeling inside me could never deny me
The right to be wrong if I choose
And this pleasure I get
From say winning a bet
Is to lose
Nothing good, nothing bad, nothing ventured
Nothing gained, nothing still-born or lost
Nothing further than proof, nothing wilder than youth
Nothing older than time, nothing sweeter than wine
Nothing physically, recklessly, hopelessly blind
Nothing I couldn't say
Nothing why 'cause today
Nothing rhymed

I'll never understand why this genius never got the recognition he so deserves. This song is just perfect. Musically, lyrically, and to top it off his great voice. 🎼🎙️
The strongs section glue me to this song ...
It was a bit over orchestrated. The strings section was a bit too loud and overpowering and it would have been nice to hear more of him and the piano. He was quite big here in the UK when I was a teenager but yes it was a brilliantly written song.
i think cause he was not a pretty boy
He did. He got a lot of recognition. All artists come and then go.
...exactly thats strange ..i dont know how many time i have listening to this genius musican songs..
I am from Waterford City in Ireland where Gilbert was born. He has been awarded the freedom of the city in recognition of his contribution to music. At last he is getting the awards that he justly deserves. It's never too late to appreciate greatness.
It took a very long time for Waterford to recognise him.

To hear this song again after at least 40 years made me cry. It’s still a beautiful song and my parents loved it. They’re both gone now but with my eyes closed, I was in our living room with my parents, as a child, watching Gilbert O’ Sullivan singing this song …………such beautiful memories…….Thank you mister O’Sullivan ❤️🇳🇱
Thank you for sharing your memories, and I share your sentiments about this beautiful song and long lost relatives and loved ones. Both my parents long gone, who enjoyed listening to Gilbert, and quite by chance I heard this song on the radio recently. It took me back to a much happier and carefree time in my life so I just had to come on to KZhead and listen again...

Beautiful comment.
I was 18 in the Irish Army and his songs were top of the list. My mother loved him too. Brilliant.
Sorely underrated. A brilliant lyricist. Some superb love songs.
The world does not appreciate it yet, but this is one of the greatest lyrics ever written by this most talented Irishman,a fellow countryman of me.
Wiser words have seldom been written! I was born in 1980 and discovered Gilbert OSullivan as a 15 year old in 1995. I'm from Norway and Gilbert was HUGE here in the early to mid 70s.

He hasn’t written a bad song. All of his music is inspirational.
If he'd just written this one, it would be enough. But a proven 70s classic songwriter back when it mattered. Deserves much more respect.
I am 53 years old. We had this song in a cassette 50 years ago. I didn't know the name of the singer or song but I memorized the rhyme in my mind. I was searching for this almost 50 years and now I found it. ❤❤❤

Quiet. Genius at work ...
A profound work of art. Gilbert is the most underated of all artistes, a genius songwriter who doesn't get the respect he deserves. Dylan would have been proud of writing this.
IMHO - his manager made him change his style of writing from meaningful songs like this to sappy love songs. Listen to the songs form "Himself" or some of his earlier songs like "I Wish I Could Cry" and "Mister Moody's Garden".
It's amazing to think that I once hated this man's music. He had the last laugh. He got me in the end.
He really was a genius in his field - remember those magical days when we heard it on our radios without a care in the world, but now.......

The joy of being a boomer and remembering these songs when they were released! What a glorious time to be born.
I'd Love to be a boomer
@Phil UK Net: I'm from 58, so a bit younger. But I'll never forget the day of it's first showing on Dutch tv. Life no less. Guilbert in his Irish Povery togs behind the piano. It was so contradictive of anything we were used to when it came to pop music. And the lyrics! Let me say this it's endearing and aware making at the same time. A short while after came Matrimony and then it got silent up into the eighties. And then a reborn, modern Guilbert O'Sullivan came back on the stage. But nowhere as powerful and beguiling as that poverty boy.
Gen Xers also loves this!
Am I a boomer if I don't have a clue about what a boomer is...?? 😃👍

Gilbert wrote this classic over 50 years ago, and I guarantee, people will still be listening to this brilliant song a hundred years from now
In a 100 years everything rhymes, because they tell you it does.

One great song just something about this song so much-needed in today's world. Love the memories an amazing song that he wrote.
After listening Gilbert's original, I'm coming away with a darker mood and certainly the lyrics are haunting. Burton Cummings covered this on his 1976 solo album because he loved the lyrics and melody, but for some reason didn't sing all of Gilbert's lyrics. Give it a listen. They both are excellent and worthy of listening to.

@@drcarter1229 I listened to that version and I don't like the lyric changes and he doesn't have the vulnerability in his voice like Gilbert has and I think is needed. A decent version but doesn't get the message across like Gilbert does.

One of the most unique songwriting talents ever. With simplistic lyrics that everyone can relate to.
He's a master of poetic form, adhering to rhyme scheme, etc., and finding concise ways to express his thoughts, but, his lyrics are anything but simplistic. They're actually very profound.
I was just thinking the same. His lyrics are hardly ever simplistic but has well thought out, often intricated and always profound. He can master all kinds of themes as well, ranging from sad to upbeat, serious to humourous.

Yes, they are both truly extraordinary songs, and strangely nothing else he wrote came close.
10 times the talent of Elton, I wish he were not scammed by his label and had made/published music throughout that period passionately, a great loss. now there is a before and after in the music and enthusiasm. Still a huge contribution to the world of music, I hope my kids' 5 generations from now will enjoy this as much as I do,
I think the very young Elton John was so much better a songwriter than he is now! Living in the US seems to have made his songs overblown and not stripped back sadly!
I agree. I was at Music College in the early 70s when these songs burst onto the scene. Gilbert & Elton were deemed “rubbish” by my tutors as their music (like the Beatles before them) didn’t conform to musical theory. I could have actually written thousands of songs like these, and better, but wasn’t allowed to. Frustrated at this I left College to find my own way but thereby hangs another tale......... anyway these “musicians” were still scorned by the tutors and, in a way, they were right. We had to literally “write” parts, as in 26 instrument scores and voice, four part harmony and piano pieces all of which had to conform to the theory of music whereas Gilbert & Elton went on to make their millions (although Gilbert was ripped off by his manager, and struggled forever thereafter), and Elton triumphed above all the “writers” you can ever imagine. If I had been a “chord merchant” like EJ then I would’ve been thrown out of College. The only true musician on the scene at the time in this genre for the UK was Peter Skellern. But because of the route he chose he never got the exposure he deserved. He died penniless.
@@annasumicz9702 get your facts right, Elton never wrote his songs Berni Taupin did Elton does the arrangement way better than Gilbert also imo
Grenville Bamford - Bernie Taupin does not write / compose music. Elton John does. Up until now I've never heard (or read) anyone say otherwise, or even hint otherwise. Feel free to share links with interviews or posts (reliable sources, obviously). In the good old days he, as Reg (sometimes Reggie) Dwight - his real name is Reginald Kenneth Dwight), wrote the music and lyrics to "Come Back Baby" and "Mr. Frantic" when he was with Bluesology
@Grenville Bamford Elton doesn’t do arrangements, nor is he “a writer” He’s a piano player. The musicians were the likes of Paul Buckmaster, Gus Dugeon, etc.

I was a young kid living in Holland when this came out and it was huge there. I'm fairly sure it was number 1 for a few weeks. The clip of the song may have initially been shown because of Gilbert's unusual get up in depression clothes and hair cut, but it didn't need that to grab attention that way because it well and truly stood up in its own right. I've never understood why it wasn't a huge hit all over the world. For me it is by far his best song.

@@joekavanagh7171 Both heartbreakers!
Same here, Peter. I was all of 7 years old when this song played on our Dutch radio. I loved it, even when I could not understand much of the lyrics. But I liked to sing along with some made-up 'words' - just for the sake of the beautiful melody. I remember a picture in my sister's "Tina" magazine, with a black-and-white picture of Gilbert in his 'depression-era looks' with a text balloon that stated "This feeling inside me could never deny me the right to be wrong if I choose" and while I couldn't parse all of it, I understood this was something special and memorized it. So Gilbert was among the first musicians who made me note music was not just 'funny' but could also be rather serious, and moving, and beautiful, and mysterious, and attractive. Later, when I got older and able to 'get' more of his music and artistry, my admiration grew. I think he's among the very best of UK's singer-songwriters. And as his music sounds still fresh, the younger generation deserves to discover him.
