  • This song brings me back to the 70s when I was just a young boy. All of my sisters and I were still living at home with my mom and dad. My dad worked in a refinery and my mom was a housewife. Dinner was always ready at 4:30pm. We’d watch “I Love Lucy” reruns on our small TV while we ate. Everyone I loved and cared about was still alive and healthy. Now, so many of the people in my life that meant so very much to me are gone. How I wish I could go back in time...but when I hear great music like this, I close my eyes, and all of those wonderful memories come rushing back into my mind.

So she kissed my cheek and said keep playing you are cute. I was so upset as I watched words take her from us,a reporter wrote she sounded great, but looked a little chubby! That stuck, she developed anorexia nervosa and even though she was thinking she was fat,she was starving to death,I cried a week when she died and I always said if that reporter had of been truthful he'd written " Stunning" instead and maybe we would still have her! 4-ever Yours,Larry Dean

Obviously, there must have been predisposition, and quite probably the sad story would have taken place anyway, only starting on a different moment.

    • Unfortunately, the record label and her brother Richard forced her to come out from behind the drums in later years because they felt that she needed to be seen as the female lead singer of the group. She was so uncomfortable at the front of the stage and it contributed to her self doubt and poor self image (combined with a plethora of other things like the pressure to maintain a certain unhealthy weight, rumours of an incestuous relationship between her and her brother, not to mention constant putdowns from her mother, and her brother being the golden child, etc.). Poor Karen dealt with a lot of demons throughout her life and it's so tragic what happened to her. Like many artists, the world just chewed her up and spit her back out.

  • It’s 2021. I’m 6’5” 250 pounds. Long hair, hard rock singer, beer, USA motorcycle fan, Tatoos. Currently wearing a fanged skull in flames shirt. Karen’s beautiful singing makes me tear up every time. She had the perfect voice. Flawless. There was only one. Brilliant. Great drummer, one of the best vocalists of all time. Completely trained by her own ear alone. Such a catastrophic loss all these years later. Innocent & fragile, destroyed by the press at such a young age. A single article drove her insecurities, and she ended up anorexic. So damn sad. I love and miss her so much.

  • Who is still listening to and Loving the Carpenters in 2012? I am and it’s April 26, 2021. Karen’s voice was so CRYSTAL CLEAR, FLAWLESS. You Never hear her take breaths, her voice stays just on each note and letter, no vibrato or influxes. Just Pure straight CLEAR & CLEAN notes and tones. I have ALWAYS WANTED HER CLEAN, CLEAR VOICE. MS. DION WARWICK even states her voice was Flawless. I so concur with her. Even Miriah Carey is sometimes breathy and it doesn’t sound good, but to each is own.

    • What we might think as simple is far from. Richard's arrangements and the overdubbing or stacked harmonies and Karen' amazing voice make this so the complete and wholesome experience. It is both Richard and Karen making this come together. I miss her everyday I think of great music and times where there were no vulgar words and no one was trying to hurt the other. Yes the 70s and The Carpenters where that time made no sense, and thank God their music so much did. We needed The Carpenters.

  • I think what draws me to Karen’s voice the most is not the bone chilling low notes her contralto voice could hit, nor the tragic legacy she left behind, but the effortlessness of it all. There’s this slight, lispy flippancy to her voice in the way she enunciates the lyrics- as if she’s not even trying at all. It’s natural and very pure. It never feels put on or contrived. It’s almost fuzzy, if it had a physical feeling. It’s warm and welcoming like a hug, soft like velvet and mysterious and powerful like the wind. It’s deeply poignant and sad like a hug goodbye or the ending of a really good book. It’s so many things at once. A duality of melancholy and pure joy that draws me back over and over again. Karen Carpenter is the only musician who has ripped my heart out and broke it, only to heal it once again with her songs. I’ll always come back for more.

My theory has more to when in your life a particular song impacted you like the first music not influenced directly by your parents. The Carpenters were designed to be commercial ie inoffensive and the only reason we still listen is Karen's s voice
