How EA Killed the Sims Franchise: The Sad State of the Sims 4

2024 ж. 10 Мам.

If there’s one game franchise that nostalgically takes me back to my childhood, it’s The Sims. From playing the Sims 2 on a Dell Dimension 4500, to playing My Sims on our family Wii, no other game series elicits the same feeling of my childhood than the Sims-with the possible exception of Simcity, yet another Maxis game. But the Sims 4, EA’s most recent PC entry into the series, has been an utter disappointment. From a lack of features, to overpriced and excessive DLC, the Sims 4 has been one major decades-long letdown after another. So today we will assess the state of the Sims franchise, and with a rumored Sims 5 release in the distant future, we will also note what the future of this iconic franchise looks like.

I finally downloaded Sims 4 (base, free only) to experiment (refused to buy it at release) and within 5 minutes of getting my new sim family into their base starter home my toddler was clipping through his dad. I’m super thankful in theory that they’re still making new content BUT not when it comes at the cost of them just churning it out without caring that the game is close to unplayable because of all the bugs from previous packs. And so many people just complain but still buy the new stuff upon release. Still disgusting that they don’t care to fix the things that need fixing either way, though. Like that shouldn’t even have to be on the customer. A product shouldn’t be released for sale if it’ll break your game unless you google it first to see if it works okay yet, and they do that time and time again.

    • Also, instead of working on fixing the obvious stuff they do stupid things like “fix buildmode” for console users-the one of very few things I would say I’ve NEVER had any issues with on console. That “update” made buildmode almost impossible to use for MONTHS and they couldn’t even be bothered to give players an update on its status or at least say they’re working on fixing it. If you put out an update and people give feedback that it’s ruined basically the whole feature, they should roll back the update until they’ve got it fixed for real. Instead they just left people who have paid for this game hanging. Again, it wasn’t even something most people have ever even complained about and they still put in all that time (apparently) and resources into that instead of the obvious and glaring issues. Absolutely ridiculous and there’s no excuse for it anymore.

The DLCs are absolutely disgusting, espcially as a Canadian (expansions are like $60.00 here) - it seems EA has gotten into the habit of adding a few key features into each one so that the player feels FOMO if they don't buy it. I stopped buying expansions after Cottage Living and haven't bought a game pack since Jungle Adventure. Kits are insulting - let's get rid of Stuff Packs and charge you almost the same price, and make a million of them so it still comes out to $100 to buy them all? No thanks! I can definitely see them going the monthly subscription route. Pay $89.99 for the Sims 5 and then have to pay an additional $14.99/month to play it. Won't be me.

In some ways, Paradox is just as bad when it comes to egregious DLC practices, and while Skylines has largely replaced Sim City, it still has some very major issues, such as being more of a traffic management game then a true city management sim al la Sim City 4, while also selling the complete experience for around half a grand. Personally, I'll just stick to the older games and wash my hands of the whole situation rather then hope for a marginally better product that is just as DLC ridden.

  • I think Sims started dipping with Sims 3 after management changes and Will Wright leaving. I know Sims 3 did a good job in many departments, but in some big ways it marked a downturn trend for the series, like with the alteration of the Sims Store. Back in The Sims 2, you could access player-created mods, objects, houses etc. from the store all for FREE, but EA's altering of this model showed the direction they wanted to take things. Sims 3 was really tough to mod, and we now have an almost decade-long cash-grab model of Sims 4, lol. I've been saying for years I'm surprised EA hasn't tried a free-to-play base game and charge $$$$$ for microtransactions. Looks like I may finally get my unwanted wish.

    • Sims 3 is overhyped. It had great features but its playability is a nightmare. Even with my absolute high end pc back then, the game performance was horrible, it lagged due to its open world, I was unable to play with CC. It ran as badly on my new pc as on the old one and on my Mac. The graphics weren't great either and the pancake faces of the Sims were a pain in the behind. The Sims 3 Store was also a really bad cash cow and they left out a lot of features in the expansions in order for us to buy them in the store. People really do not see that today... Sims 2 was an absolute masterpiece though. Sims 1 was great, I played it for years, but its successor was superior in every way. Gameplay, animations, playability, creativity. Neither Sims 3 nor 4 matched it. But I must admit I love the art style of Sims 4, I was glad they "dumbed" it down, the textures were softer. In the beginning I used the same high end pc for Sims 4 as I had for Sims 3 and even though it was 5 years younger, it ran so smoothly even with 20 GB of CC. I admit that it doesn't feel as finished as the reiterations before and it's a pity to me. But no, Sims 3 wasn't any better.

      @lapetitecerise4557@lapetitecerise45578 ай бұрын
    • @@lapetitecerise4557 The problem with Sims3 is that it's 32-bit only so can only do about 2.5 gigs of memory, and the open world means it has to do a LOT of simulation in the background. It's like Dwarf Fortress, except limited to one cpu core and maybe a few threads total (so it'll keep rendering animations even as the game freezes under it taking UI with it). Sims3 needs a rewrite to be a good game but they have shown zero interest in doing so and outright said no. The store was the downfall really, but Sims3 did have a cool feature to get around that: Freeform castable 'colour' regions. So if it said 'what colour do you want to make the countertop' you could use the wheel, or instead go "nah, I'm gonna use this riveted metal texture from floors instead for a hard industrial counter look" and the game went "You do you!" even as it sold a new modelled countertop that was identical otherwise on the store.

    • @@bull_technology I really want to challenge your use of 'lazy' applied to the actual making/designing/programming of the packs. I think that when talking about this subject, it's important to make a distinction between EA as a business - and the people responsible for operating the business aspect of a games publisher the likes of EA - vs the people who get alloted a budget/salary *from* EA to actually do the creative work of producing the content. I say this because, weirdly I think 'lazy devs' has become almost like... a dogwhistle? Within the sims community, which is used to kind of just, emotively complain, and not think at all about why these problems might have arisen in the first place. Which ime, tends to lead to a kind of, eliding of 'devs who are paid a salary to make game things' and 'EA the company with heavily profit-driven corporate practices.' I don't think that's all to great of a thing to encourage, even if for no other reason than if we just go 'yeah, lazy devs, lazy EA' interchangeably, or signal that, then there's not really gonna be a lot of the fandom holding the *company* and its practices, specifically, accountable.

  • Everytime I watch a video like this I note the tone of the person narrating and I can tell when it’s someone who has played the Sims from the beginning and loved it with every bit of their hearts, like I did. There is an almost tangible sadness there, a wistful yearning for the days where we spent hours and hours glued to our computers, perfecting our homes, levelling up our sims skills, watching them interact with their family and friends and creating elaborate plots and stories. I remember the magic. I can still feel the magic. And when I open up Sims 3, I still remember it so vividly, it’s like coming home after having been abroad for decades. Yet the graphics of TS3 are getting harder to deal with, and though the build mode is great, it has limitations that can be frustrating. I had such high hopes for TS4. I hoped it would be another TS3 but even better, TS3 with better graphics and better plots and new activities and all kinds of goodies. We all hoped for that. Almost 10 years later, I have all but given up on the series. I loyally bought the base game and all expansions and game packs (never stuff packs) for quite a few years, despite being disappointed with every one. I kept telling myself that they were just starting out slow, that it would get better. The potential was absolutely there… but it was never realized. Around 2018 or 2019 I stopped buying all the DLC and just purchased the ones that looked intriguing. Even then, even when the trailers seemed to promise exactly what I was hoping for, it fell short. Eventually I stopped buying altogether. After a while, I bought Cottage Living because I had seen some reviews even by people who, like me, had given up, that seemed to enjoy it. Indeed I did have a bit of fun with, certainly the most fun I’ve had with TS4 ever. But the novelty wore off fast and I was back to the shallow gameplay that TS4 has always offered. The way EA is simply (and so obviously!!!) just milking this cash cow of every possible penny and not even trying to deliver content with heart sickens me. Maxis games were some of the best ever made and to see The Sims fall to this corporate bullshit makes me so sad. The only redeeming qualities of TS4 are the graphics and the build mode. I will admit, I enjoy the build mode a lot. But with the terrible gameplay mode? It has become nothing more than a house designer to me, and it used to be so, so much more. If the Sims 5 is what people are speculating, I’m not touching it. I think I’m done with the series. I might pick up the horse one when it goes on sale only because I love horses, but otherwise that’s it for me. And that still honestly makes me so sad. To all those grieving this wonderful series like I am… we’re not alone. Let us at least fondly remember the Sims 1-3 and let this one die along with any bit of integrity EA has left.

City/ apartment living.. I could go on. They should release a fully inclusive, developed game and sell world packs that add lore and interest to the game. (Not rabbit hole lore). They should focus their energy in giving us something that we haven’t seen 3 or 4 times over at this point. They can only REPEAT the same pattern and business strategy for so long before enough is finally enough. It’s 2023, don’t try to sell me a pack I’ve already bought 4 times at this point. • i do say this on any sims 4/sims 5 video i see. EA did destroy the sims franchise. However, if they think they've gotten away with these shenanigans forever, they sure haven't. Because I truly believe that they caused a butterfly effect with their mishap, causing other companies to step in and work on better human simulation games. First and foremost, not a human sim, but Planet Zoo is an amazing zoo simulator that came on the fall of the Zoo Tycoon games. And it proves that even if a franchise seems dead, someone can bring it back to life. Look at games in development right now that WILL be an exact competition for the sims franchise: life by you and paralives. They won't be able to pull their stunts they've pulled with Sims 4 once these games come out and shed light to how these games need to be made, what we look for as consumers, and what we're willing to pay for. And if these other life sims have weather and pets right off the bat, EA can enjoy the loss because consumers won't want to pay for a base simulation game that doesn't have either when indie devs will be making games that do. The whole "play with life together" they were originally planning in sims 4 and will probably try to add to sims 5 won't help them. They need to listen to their consumers and quit cash cowing everything. Or Sims 5 will be the last sims to ever be made.

    • Very well summed up and articulated. This was, in essence, my point of the video. Other games will pick up for the Sims left off and deliver features that consumers expect. You list some excellent example is here, but the example that's most salient to me is Cities Skylines-which was a better SimCity than SimCity. I do think that people will leave the Sims franchise when competitive games arise. The only reason they can get away with his shenanigans now is because there isn't a fully fledged competitor to them in this game space.

Even Get to Work is broken, their very first pack. Dine out is broken for many. Wedding Stories, a relatively new but not really pack, has been broken since before launch! And just to add fuel to the fire, the EA app, which has been pretty much forced on players, is notorious for being a piece of trash that works properly maybe once a week, with no option to just play offline and avoid these issues. I'm hoping PayPal will give me a refund but I doubt it. The app also locked me off of Sims 4 and 3 when I first downloaded it. It doesn't matter if you have hundreds of objects to choose from if you can't mix even a quarter of it without creating a mad mismatch of styles and colors. I can bear with the downgraded lack of an open world, but I know that if the color wheel is lacking in Sims 5 then it won't ever be worth buying into. As for their bs excuse of wanting to reduce loading times: I honestly rather have one prolonged loading screen when I start the game and occasionally travel to a new map than the far more frequent loading screens you got in Sims 4.

    • @@JimMilton-ej6zi I wouldn’t say Sims 3 perfected anything. In 2023 it’s easier to play a stable game, but at release it was badly optimized and really the fans and mods have done most of the fixing. Sims 3 also dropped things that are still better in Sims 2. I am pulled out everytime a freaking sim teleports across the street into a car. Not to mention the unrealistic uturns and the speeding. I’d honestly rather not ‘see’ the drive. Leaving and arriving is fine. Sims 3 sims are dangerous drivers. And I’ve had sims 3 cars just go through other cars. Wtf. I was playing sims 1 yesterday and the carpool car couldn’t leave because a dog was in front of it. A sims 1 car acknowledged blockage. Yet Sims 3 is suppose to be the most ‘realistic’ when I just watched a car drive through a cab? No wonder sims 4 was like ‘why not just eliminate the car’ and had teleporting be standard. I blame Sims 3 for starting it. Minus having a street to drive it down beyond the lot, I think Sims 2 did cars overall better. Babies and toddlers are both better in sims 2 and 4. And by Babies I mean sims 4 infants, not bassinet-locked newborns (they still suck). But why can’t I wash my toddler Sims 3? Changing a diaper is not the same thing as a bath Sims 3! Also, if you are a rotational player Sims 3 downright punishes you for swapping families warning you that you will lose you lifetime wishes if you swap. Why give me all these premade families with story tracks if you want me to commit to one Sim family? It litterally crushed a whole playstyle at launch. Most of whom just went back to Sims 2 until Nraas mods made playing their way a bit more possible. Sims 3 has huge flaws and is unplayable without the Nraas mods (for me) as I can set up a protected ‘caste’ as my rotational group if I want without having to have separate saves. The open world was an accomplishment and the worlds ARE pretty but for actual gameplay, I have way more fun in Sims 2. Sims 3 is a good game, but there are times I think it’s looked at with rose tinted glasses when I would say there are small areas where TS4 is even better than TS3. And not just Build/Buy.

Time has passed, I got ts4 on a Black Friday too for 20 dollars, and I was sooo happy, and there werent any expansion packs announced (yet) but when I got it they announced the camp expansion thing, and I got it, ask me when have I played with that game mode, it’s so boring. Anyway, now I just find it crazy and ridiculous how they are making expansion packs, kits and whatever else, no items for free, and apparently they will never be. Honestly I got happy when the game got free to play, bc there are many many people who can’t buy it and they download it in other ways. But yeah, I agree with you that EA is just milking the game and it’s disappointing and disgusting. Ps. Sorry for sharing a lot and ranting, i just wanted to give my opinion on it.

  • As a kid i always watched so many sims 3 lets plays of the island pack and the supernatural pack and i was always so engaged with how filling those series were, when i slowly became older sims 4 was the new ride and i got into watching sims 4 series and discovered that majority of the gaming stemmed from the youtubers' creativity and the inclusion of mods and cc. Without mods and cc the game is sadly only worth playing for impressionable children who have high attention spans. Even myself being now 17 and still playing the sims 4, the only way its bearable to really play is through creating in depth character backstories and a bunch of custom drama, families, as well as immersive fashion and in general just 'roleplaying' scenarios because the game is drier than a desert with the only lazily implemented natural 'events' being sims calling your house up, or having weather changes randomly impact your sims even with many packs it's really a 'what you make of it' game instead of an actual proper game in my opinion as was the sims 3. Its a shame, i honestly would be better of just having sims 3 and being able to have all the supernatural ability users all in a single cheap pack and that could do me with more content than ea has provided me with city living, snowy escape, vampires, and seasons all combined LMAOoo. But it is what it is sadly.

They will buy Sims 5, start the cycle over, and still buy it all. I'm happy that, when Sims 4 came out, I was oddly turned off by it and didn't buy the game. @bull_technology@bull_technology9 ай бұрын
  • I truly feel that Sims 5 will be the last. I can absolutely believe it's going fully free-to-pay, because as it stands well.. EA knows that MANY people that are interested in the series but not gullible enough to shell out $1k (on ANY game) rather easily find illicit ways to access ALL the content they so readily monetize. But, going forward, make it so the player must go through an in-game marketplace? Well, it just got significantly harder for people to do that sort of thing, if not impossible. Once EA fully embraces an environment in which those interested have no choice but to pay outrageous "microtransactions" (at the rate of increase between games for an all-inclusive experience, I'd guess at least $2k total after added up) or simply not play- I'd bet, most will simply not play. Gradually, EA will see the numbers failing, and give up on The Sims instead of ever having the reflection to know it is only 'dead' due to their own poor business decisions. I hate to be pessimistic, but the writing is on the wall. It's confusing and sad to me to see so many modern fans more than okay with the current business model.. What game is worth $1k or more?? You can go out and buy a price-gouged PS5 for literally several hundred less than that! 💔

    • @Riu-bw4bl I think there's a key difference in the games some of these people grew up with versus older crowds. Games I grew up with couldn't be "fixed" post-release in a really meaningful manner or without really annoying effort (e.g. wow, you're shipping me a floppy for [Game Title] fixes? Thanks! Lol). If a game was broken, it was TRULY broken, and no one recommended its purchase typically. Now, there's an expectation of fixes and optimism that companies like EA absolutely exploit for profit, with a generation of gamers who are only familiar with games that receive patches and updates. The arguments of "ughhh it wasn't this way when *I* was young" is usually stated without basis and disconnected from reality but I think, with video games, this drastic shift in how games *can* be made and maintained modernly is a huge part of why companies are able to get away with this behaviour. It isn't entirely unrealistic for a game to be fixed or massively improved for free nowadays.. But how often does it actually happen? Lol. Just foster a friendly face towards your community to make it seem like you *could* fix stuff, but really don't *have* to. Foster optimism you can exploit, the profits will come regardless of the lived consumer experience.

Now I only use mods and cc (im up to 66 gb so far) and not gonna lie even with all the mods I have I can still feel how empty base game sims 4 is. so much of the most basic stuff that one would think should come by default on a simulation game is extracted and repackaged as "dlc" for $20-40. even with sales I'm not gonna buy the dlc I want because I don't really care to give my money to any games with absurd amounts of dlc, plus I've heard that some of ts4 dlcs have bugs that haven't been fixed so that's even more of a reason to keep my money

  • I would say, the issue with the Sims 4 I don't think is "lack of features" per say, I think it has a lot of content, it's more of disconnected systems. You got a growing up system that doesn't connect at all with the whole having pets system, having pets is not related at all to how you have horses, or cooking, or getting a job, and so on. All this are isolated separate systems. Imagine if the whole going to university allowed you to gain the knowledge needed to be a veterinarian and do more advanced stuff with your farm animals, if having pets could influence the way child development works, if one could be pregnant and go to university as an adult and face the challenges of parenthood while studying in university. What I am saying here is having all this systems interact with one another to create new systems, and this would allow this feeling of "having content" in the game to explode exponentially.

  • I just do you know what to all The Sims 4 DLCs since I am too broke to buy all the dlcs.I did make an exception to the Sims 3 since the dlcs can be bought used on eBay since the keys can be reused as the dlcs were released on disc initially.
