How did Doc Hudson die? I mean The Fabulous Hudson Hornet was a racing legend who spent his final years as the crew chief for one of the greatest race cars of all time - Lightning McQueen - so how is it possible that he couldn’t be repaired? It’s not like Lightning would have spared any expense getting Doc the necessary care and parts that he needed. I just assumed after surviving his career ending crash that he could live through anything! But even with all of the resources at his disposal in Radiator Springs and beyond, he couldn’t stay alive forever, and today I want to understand why.

I'm Isaac Carlson, a creator based in Orlando, Florida, and ever since I can remember I’ve loved Disney. My fondest childhood memories come from visiting Walt Disney World with my family. I grew up loving Spider-Man, Star Wars, Pixar, and the classic animated films from Disney. I once owned a 1988 BMW 325i convertible. One of the very last things it said to me was “Don’t hang on. Nothing lasts forever but the earth and sky. It slips away, and all your money won’t another minute buy. Dust in the wind, all we all is dust in the wind.” And it was right. It didn’t matter how much money I through at it. I was never going to get another moment with it. I ended up watching Cars in the drivers seat the day before I parted with it. That was the closest thing I could get to having another moment.

I think the moment in cars 3 where we see lighting and doc racing each other was the moment doc died. and docs last words to lighting were "you've got a lot of stuff kid" like he said at the end of the original cars
That actually makes sense, just that they cut out the more brutal part of it i.e. when it is became too obvious that Doc was dying rather than just letting McQueen take the lead, leaving the scene on a more ambiguous yet peaceful note!

I think you hit it on the head: their internal bodies aren't immortal. They are a melding of machine and organism, and whether he caught ill or just got too old, Doc "ran out of road," so to speak. I loved how they handled his absence in the movie.

@@SimbaTheGreat This is sort of how "real" cars are though. When I go to the junkyard, I see vehicles less than 10 years old that have been junked, and younger than the vehicles I drive daily. My son and I got to ride in a model T at a car show last year. A whole club brough them down and erw giving people rides around in them

Well it's a known fact that Paul Newman died after the making of Cars 1(2008) so to speak, but letting him be left the way he was rememberd in the cars 3 movie i think it's best they just let Doc be left alone just the way he is.
Cars 2 shows that cars keep alive because the batteries are charged. Like real vehicles! The still run because they have battery. Doc passed away because a mechanical failure, maybe his engine wore down so bad after racing mcqueen that he could not start it again, so he just accepted it.
Under an hour and here to say R.I.P Paul Newman. Atleast he lived to see his last movie release.

To be honest the movie that tackled "outmodding" in this way WAS ... well Robots. The movie got pretty dark with what happened to robots who were outmodded. Honestly another movie to check out or go back to for that reason. The main guy in charge was systematically trying to get rid of those who were "not shiny" basically the lower class who couldn't afford upgrades. I love Cars, but there are a lot of questions the movies leave open especially with the second movie.
"Robots" was a great movie about self-sufficiency, and ingenuity. I loved the attitude of Big Weld!

A plot where Doc Hudson perished in 2009 happened when the legendary actor Paul Newman died in 2008. After that, McQueen's 4th Piston Cup was renamed the Hudson Hornet Piston Cup in Doc Hudson's honor. That was one character who died due to its actor dying in reality.

Disney Pixar is not going to make a Cars 4 because of how they left Cars 3 off.(Lightning McQueen takes up the mantle as Doc Hudson for Cruz Martinez) Cruz get's to be exactly like the racing legend she always wanted to be since she was a first built (i guess) (Lightning McQueen). Now the Movie writers and producers have come out to the media and talked abt this in an interview where they specifically stated tht "Is Cars 4 coming out...? No, i think it's best to leave that chapter in the storybooks finished, Cruz becomes Lightning McQueen, and Lightning McQueen becomes Doc Hudson for many years to come for Cruz. So no i don't think Cars 4 is ever going to Come out."

Hi Isaac, I've been watching you since you started all the Kfp content and the deep dive you take into those backstories is really great to see. I recently watched Kung Fu Panda 4 and I enjoyed it. Although I agree on some points you described in the previous video, but I think I might have a different perspective towards the movie, I would like to share: 1) Sure the absence of the Furious Five takes some charm out from the movie, but I think there was definitely gonna be a time, where the Dragon Warrior had to fight without them, atleast for once. 2) Po choosing Zhen as the Dragon Warrior is surely confusing, but if we take a deep dive in kfp 1, Master Oogway chose Po and we never got the answer of 'why him?', until Kfp 3, which was the end of the student trilogy. Po is not mature like Oogway, but he chose Zhen because she is different like him, there's definitely gonna be a point where Zhen would lose hope and ask Po why he chose her. So I believe we must wait for the future film(s) to answer this. 3) As for Master Shifu still alive scenario: At the end when Master Shifu is trying to achieve eternal peace Po interrupts him, which is a sign that Po is still not mature and would not let Master Shifu go. Master Shifu is still not confident on Po's choices and decisions, so I think that the future movies may do some justice to it. 4) I agree that The Chameleon could've been executed more greatly, like the other three. But, what if we assume that there are many masters in the kfp world who discriminate the others on the basis of their sizes or The Chameleon maybe wanted to learn Kung fu to achieve power, fame, etc. but when she was denied, she misjudged the masters were discriminating her. But, for sure they could've made her character even more scarier with a deep backstory, showing how she possessed dark magic and became the most feared criminal. 5) On the return of the Master Villains: Tai Lung was executed nicely. You know that the character has grew a lot, when he doesn't even try to take revenge on Po and calls the Spirit Realm his home. I agree his goodbye with Shifu would've made the movie great, but perhaps a greater scene in waiting for us in kfp 5 or 6, where Shifu will finally ascend to the Spirit Realm and meet his son on the other side. For Lord Shen, he accepted his death at the end of kfp 2, maybe he tried to reflect on his actions and achieve peace in the spirit realm. But, after his return, The Chameleon didn't even gave him a chance to act and took off his powers. He could've had a conversation with Po, but does he really deserve forgiveness? Also after Po saved them all, he had a guilt in his mind , that the one whose everything was destroyed by him, gave him another chance and saved him. He had no words to express or he felt like unworthy to do so, hence he just bowed with respect for his opponent. As for General Kai, he didn't had that much personal connection with Po and he just wanted Po's chi, so I feel the same for him. 6) As for Master Shifu's staff, maybe he healed it with the help of chi, since we last saw that chi can make dead flowers bloom, so he did the same with his staff. KFP 4 does leave out the charm of the original trilogy but for sure give us some great and deep moments. So we should wait for the future KFP 5 which would for sure cover these plots. I hope you are reading this, these were just some points on the way I feel about the film. Hope you have a good day!

No, the engines aren't their organs. In the first movie McQueen's engine died after he ran out of gas and he still can talk. In the second movie, the allinol's founder explores south America while running out of gas.

I feel like Doc, being a medical professional, AND an orphan car, knew the value of salvaged parts. I feel like he had some sort of “do not resuscitate” request, as well as being an organ donor. He knew that his genuine Hudson parts were valuable and he could save multiple lives by sacrificing his own. It’s very possible that one of those recipients may have been Smokey himself. For all we know, Smokey might’ve never been able to inspire both McQueen and Ramirez, as he was a Hudson as well. If this were the case, Doc continued to live on through the actions of others.
But in Cars 2 we see inside the car. In the French backstreet, we see that someone is selling "Headlights" where the eyes are move to where the headlights are and this makes the windshield clear.

if cars, in the Disney universe, work anything like in the transformers series, age is part of the process of death. since cars, don't have lungs, like humans do, even the robotic ones, i'm thinking it had something to do with air filtration. once an air filter stops working in a car, the engine doesn't work properly, so since Hudson's hornet line of cars, isn't in production, at least not here in america, there's a huge chance, the air filter, as well as a lot of other parts, like the alternator and the radiator weren't available for shipping. that would explain why the character doc, wasn't in the cars movies, like the second or third. the in the real world reason, Paul Newman, the voice of doc wasn't doing so well health wise and it would have been in poor taste, to ask him to reprise his role as the character. also, there weren't a lot of actors out there, that would have been interested in voicing a talking car. if he's still around, i'm sure Kelsey grammar could have done it.

Cars, trains, boats, ships, and planes can all be restored to operational status, with enough money, time, and patience. I always assumed Lizzy was an "original" Model T ("original" meaning "never having been altered or restored"), but I wonder how they would voice a Model T who had "died" 60 years ago and was stored in a barn until receiving a complete restoration and rebuild -- and I mean *complete:* engine rebuild, new transmission bands, accessory underdrive rear axle, rebuilt coils, upgraded carburetor. They ought to cast something like that to the descendants of the original voice actor.

Favorite character from the cars movies based off a legendary race car and voiced by probably the best person who could’ve voiced him. Something about that character is just better than all the other ones.
On the topic of cars being organic inside of a mechanical system; I’d seen a video where the presenter premised that the organic system inside the car was a type of bug or insect that stumbled upon cars as empty shells and grew to fill the various nooks and crannies of the car. Not sure what it adds to the conversation but it’s something to think about

Similar but alternate theory: the organic systems are sustained by the mechanical/electronic systems in the cars. Therefore, if the mechanical systems in a car fail for too long, the organic systems will eventually die. That’s why Axelrod’s jungle trek after being out of gas was so impressive. Therefore, Doc may have been alive after his mechanical systems failed, and Lightning McQueen would have had to watch his mentor, friend, and adopted father die over the course of days or even weeks (depending on how long organic systems can live without the mechanical systems) before his eyes as he scrambled to try to find someone or something that would have saved Doc. Yeah, that’ll make you depressed.

They’re probably built in a factory by a manufacturer, much like how cars in real life are made
That theory does make sense on the surface, but there are many other complications. I'm pretty sure this question isn't meant to ever be answered lol.
My guess was that they probably didn't have the parts anymore to help Doc. At a point in time those parts would stop being made as the world would move more to the future. That's what would happen to old cars like him. How you explained, was so much better, lol.

@@gabrielv.4358 In the movie "Planes: Fire and Rescue", Dusty Crophopper gear box was damaged due to him going in high speeds during races or putting on a show at events. Dusty's gear box was out of production and trying to find someone who had one was impossible. This was pretty much almost the same situation as Doc, but it was probably over certain part was crucial that he needed. Where they were located at couldn't find someone to customize one or get soneone to come out to Radiator Springs. Plus, Pixar didn't want to replace the main voice actor who played Doc.
it's simple. his voice acter died and disney could not find a replacement so they made cars without him

What I find sad about this is Paul Newman might of wanted Doc to live on for future generations. Personally, Pixar should have asked the voice actors if they wanted their character to live on if they were to pass in advanced.

Engine Cancer is what I read, just like our real life cars, getting lots of breakdowns the older the cars are, old age will catch up. Similar to my old late 2000s gaming laptop, it was strong but then gets weaker overtime until it have been crashing a lot or no longer boot up.

You can steer car wheels without the engine running, it's just a bit harder. Also ironically really old cars like Doc wouldn't have power steering anyway.

I knew his actor died, but I always assumed doc died in universe because his engine blew up (unrelated to explosions later in cars 2)

In my opinion, although Doc died of natural causes, discontinued parts were also a contributing factor, since the chassis and the parts are vital for keeping the cars alive. As explained in this video, LIghtning still can move without fuel, since fuel is considered as a food / energy source where the sentient beings inside the mechanical body will still live for a period of time, although it will be fatal, meanwhile Lightning can still limp since the parts and the chassis is a built in accessory to aid in the sentient being's motion and actions which are also powered by fuel. Therefore, lack of parts might also be suicidal for such sentient beings of this universe.
I had a dream that showed how doc died both him and McQueen were racing each other when there was loud bang doc wench in pain and came to a stop lighting stopped and turned to see doc in pain and in a pool of oil he'd eminently pushed doc all the way back to radiator springs where he slipped into a comatose and 5 days later he'd died

an interesting twist to the story of Doc Hudson comes from the real life auto industry. Hudson motors merged with Kaiser to become American Motors...builder of Gremlins and Pacers....the Lemons in cars II. Doc's family heritage is found in the lemons! The Lemons were having problems obtaining parts, so you know he did as well...were the lemons Doc's descendants?!?!
